If you don't like Steam, you can take a look a gog.com.
If you don't like either, you can buy Factorio direct from the Factorio website.
It's going to run in its own window, anyway, so there's no need to invoke Steam or any other background client.
I don't specifically object to steam or it's associated dongle, it would just make my life a ton easier if there was one dongle for all things.
Also, I played Factorio over the weekend cause it looked interesting. I played through the demo. I liked it, though I don't get why you have a character that has to move near any buildings just so you can interact with them. It seems like an annoying gimmick and the game would have been alot better if it just followed the Sim-City recipe where you can play the game from an omnipotent point-of-view in the sky.
Also, shooting alien bugs detracted from the fun for me. I thought it was fun trying to set up the optimum layout for my factory and generate stuff efficiently. But that kept getting interrupted by a swarm of freaky caterpillars.
Are there options/mods in the full version to fix either of these problems?
Ye but there isn't but your options are still great and cheap. As a consumer it's a really shitty point to moan at. Like you come across as worse than jack moaning about micro transactions.
In other news I recently left my last wow guild, were a few people I didn't get on with that well and I was struggling to make raid times etc. Joined a new guild on trial and it seems to be going ok so far. They don't seem as active as my old guild but much better raiding times and they are much more optimal in their approach to things so we'll see how it goes.
If you can create a generic sandbox map, the bugs can be turned off at world gen. Having done so, turn off pollution, too. Pollution's only purpose is to trigger the bugs to attack.
I recommend trying the mod "Picker Extended Version" for a nice assortment of QoL tweaks. I'm pretty sure there's extended reach which can be modified in the mod settings to accommodate your comfort level.
Or here:
https://mods.factorio.com/?q=reach
Now that I think of it, I believe you can use console commands to fake a Sim City style interface, but I never tried it. The Factorio reddit is one of the nicest corners of the internet I've ever seen, so if you're curious, just ask there.
Path of Exile is my jam. I'm trying to beat it without using any trades and while only using the kind of build I find fun (as opposed to one better suited for beating the game). Very hard.
It's basically a greatly improved Diablo 2 with regular improvements/expansions.
If you don't know what that is, it's overhead view hack n slash. You use melee and magic and ranged and other forms of combat to kill very large amounts of monsters in a medieval fantasy setting. It's largely loot-based, meaning monsters you kill drop better weapons/armor etc.. Path of Exile has an incredible skill system, where you can get VERY creative with your builds. Or you can stay simple if you want.
I prefer melee facetanking. I've beaten maybe 85% of the content with this style. But it gets really hard. You almost have to trade with other players for better gear to create your "final" build. I just don't want to do that. Some people have beaten all the content without trading with others (and without trading between their own characters), but they're gangsters who grind like crazy and know how to make the best builds and know how every boss behaves perfectly.
My new character this league might be my final attempt to beat all the content. I'll probably level up to 92 (the highest I've gotten), then stop trying to level anymore and instead try to complete the content using lots of deaths. There's a penalty to experience when you die in the late-game, and I always wanted to get a character up to 100, but it's so damn hard. Most builds that can finish endgame can do so around level 90. The people who do it in the permadeath league get to 100 or close though.
Interesting stuff. I never played Diablo 2, but I had a friend who was kind of addicted to it, and it looked like a game I'd enjoy.
Path of Exile is free to play. That and it being based on Diablo 2 (which I loved) is why I started it. Got hooked pretty quickly.
I like the company's business model too. It's creative. You don't have to spend any money in order to beat it, and spending money is simply a time-energy saver or for aesthetics instead of making your character more powerful. The game's most hardcore players have spent thousands. I've spent like 30 for a few stash tabs that make life easier.
Clustertruck is a solid couple of hours of entertainment.
For the past couple of days I've been trying to figure out what games I can get from the sale that I'm most likely to play at some point. So far my list is: Bayonetta, Skullgirls, Superflight and Quadrilateral Cowboy. Probably booting QC.
Speaking of Diablo2, was anyone else active in hardcore, with the resetting ladder every few months? That shit was so much fun/so stressful. Going back to normal was like going back to play money tables.
I guess I've been overlooking that one because I've been burned by highly stylized platformers too many times before. But also some of my favorite games of the past have been highly stylized platformers.
I've been playing VRchat for a couple of hours and it's amazing. It's laissaiz-faire role playing so it's kind of hit and miss, but I was surprised by the depth people have been creating on their own. Everyone should try it. It's free, it's on Steam and you really don't need a VR headset to play it. In the short time I've played it: me and Morty tried to help a guy find more balls. I joined a cult, took part in a mass suicide and had an interesting chat about character creation in Blender with a sack of potatoes.
Highly recommended!
Get the fuck outta here, Garfield! Kill 'im!

Yeah, d2 had essentially the same thing. I forget if we used logout macros or just alt+f4. I think the key that kept it fun was that the ladder reset regularly, and being on top, or towards the top, at any given point gave you bragging rights and I think a special avatar in chat (beyond the hardcore red halo). Because of the reset and the incentives to be at the top, you kinda had to push your character and balance the risk of dying vs the reward of big XP gains. If you just played it safe where you could never get caught off guard and have your HP drained in seconds, you'd never be competitive.
Only watch these if you've either been in VRchat and you do know the way, or you don't know the way but you also really don't care to know the way, then watch these. But I would consider these massive spoilers for VRchat. Yes, spoilers for VRchat. Go check it out if you haven't already
Whiny whiners whining....

Mah loot boxes.
It can only be what you are able to make of it.
So, no, brudah, dis is not da wae for u brudah.
Thumper is just a really good game. Even more impressive that it's a 2-man project and they build it on a custom engine.

interesting talk about the development process:

Still on a quest to find a good game that gives my hands something to do while I'm listening to podcasts. So far no winners.
Modded Skyrim SE is amazing.
Top 3 mods I can think of sitting at work on a slow day in-between last day of classes and final exams:
Legacy of the Dragonborn is epic.
Ordinator makes the perk trees more impactful.
SMIM fixes terribad meshes in vanilla Skyrim.
Anyone have any Skyrim SE mods to recommend?
(I'm not interested in any "boob physics" type mods. I'm really OK with cartoon boobs being less than exhilarating.)
I heard this morning that there is a man suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of a game called Fortnite.
This might not seem newsworthy, however, this particular man has a $100M+ contract to pitch baseballs for the Boston Red Sox.
Is the game really that good? So good that a man would compromise a $100M livelihood just to play a little more?
Speaking of addictive games for children, I am hooked on splatoon 2. Such a silly little shooter but it's crazy fun
Has anyone else here picked up a switch?
Played hour and a half of Witcher 3. Do not like. Seeing if can get refund.
Might try Original Sin 2
Main problem with Witcher is I want to play a game not watch a movie. I try to play games the way they are intended, consume majority of content, take it somewhat easy to soak it in and figure it out. Doing that, I had only two straightforward fights in 1:30 of play time. Not fun.
COMPLETELY AGREE about Witcher.
Fucking everything I read raved about it, so I bought it. Two hours in and I think I've pushed like 4 buttons. And when I do engage in some kind of "action", I feel like I'm just mashing buttons and hoping for the best. And it works!! Can't imagine why this game is so popular.
The reason for that is you haven't really started playing the game. I avoid stuff like that for similar reasons but it's pretty stupid to say it's bad.
As for me I'm still just dossing about playing WOW.
I got Divinity: Dragon Commander a while ago pretty much because of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vejayAkO9PM
Obligatory: RIP Totalbiscuit :'(
The writing is great. I imagine the same goes for other Divinity titles. The RTS part hurt my pride. I'd like to think of myself as being pretty good at RTS but I couldn't get behind it.
I'm pretty excited for Rage2. I didn't play Rage because it looked too much like an awesome concept with game mechanics decided on by a committee. From the trailers it looks like they have learned their lesson from Doom.
There are probably zero Dota2 players here. I got back into it because battlepass matchmaking is always way superior to regular matchmaking, and it's battlepass time again. I like what they did. They sped the game up a fair bit, created more points of contention and just generally encourage fighting more over passive farming and it's probably the best it's ever been. Of course, the learning curve is not as much of a curve as it is a brick wall, so I'm hesitant in recommending it unless you have friends who play and you want to stress test your relationship.
new path of exile league is the best theyve done. if youve thought about playing it, now is the time
I waited far too long to try out Darkest Dungeon. It's great.
Such a time sink.
Titanfall 2 single player campaign is the best thing I've ever played. Dunno about the multiplayer though
Yup, totally loving this game after having it for just a few days.
There's a layering of the variance that's pretty cool - e.g., you first have x% chance to 'hit' the opponent, then iff you hit them you do i-j worth of damage, and whether or not you do DOT is also variable by player and enemy. It makes it pretty much impossible to devise a perfect plan that will see you through an entire battle.
Add to that all the other perks - the retro, cheesy-but-oh-so-polished graphics, the music, etc.
I have to say the best part of the feel comes from the narrator though - that voice and that script are both just so awesome.
"In time, you will know the tragic extent of my failings." lol
So i got fucking micro-transaction-ed.
My kids asked me to buy something called "Robux"
I did it....for the purposes of my own sanity.
Who do I sue?
How do I make a game that is purely designed to get kids to badger their parents into buying virtual currency?
I feel like a post disappeared....
....seems someone is getting smarter....
There was this Harry Potter game which would strangle your character until you pay up.
True story

I remember playing a harry potter game that ended up trapping me in a hole that I couldn't progress any further in because it was a glitch.
I never bought another Harry Potter game.
These are the exact same people who would push banning poker.
So Red Dead Redemption... basically a poaching simulator?
Gonna rock Doom 2016 this week off
Pew pew!
Playing FF9, tis good.
Who is playing Apex ? Pretty sweet FPS from the old COD4/MW2 creators ! Smoothest FPS in a long time
I'm aware that it exists. There's a near zero percent chance I'd play it for more than a day, so I haven't bothered trying it. I keep trying shooters, but I haven't found anything I enjoy more than cs:go... which I also haven't played in a while, but if I felt like shooting, I'd get back into CS.
Countless hours were spent playing CS-- HL deathmatch was really good too, but QIII Arena was probably the greatest deathmatch mode ever.

Anybody planning on Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, or Baldur's Gate 3?
