Chelle's Boyfriend Died in a Storm, She Has Serious Injuries

A fast-moving storm tore through the city Wednesday evening, toppling trees and causing a fatal wreck, Winston-Salem police said.

Justin Timothy Cardwell, 25, of Woods Road was killed about 6:30 when a pine tree uprooted by strong winds fell onto his car in the 2000 block of Reynolda Road, police said.

Rebecca Michelle Dobbins, 26, a passenger in the car, suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

That section of Reynolda Road was closed late Wednesday night.

The storm also knocked down trees in the Ardmore neighborhood and along Old Salisbury Road, said Julie Koppang, a police communications supervisor.

Fallen trees also were reported along Peace Haven and Country Club roads.

I don't know the details because I haven't kept up with her, but I know that she has been doing a lot better than she was and that this will be a huge blow for her. Thank every one of you. It means a lot. I'm as good as to be expected. I have severe whiplash, lots of cuts on my hand, arms, and face.

Y'all don't have to do anything if you don't want to. Just keep everyone that knew Justin, be it friend or family, in mind. He was an amazing, kind, funny, protective, and sweet man.

Justin wouldn't want me sad or crying or upset. I am allowing myself to mourn, as I can't fight it what so ever, but I find my moments of strength in knowing that he always just wanted me happy and healthy.

Everyone I just want to say thank you again.

Today was his memorial service, and since Wednesday night after this happened, I've had a song in my head on loop. It's a song that he said I should listen to when we first started texting, "I Will" from The Beatles. I was able to speak, and then sing the song acapella. I surprised myself and everyone who knows me that was there.

There wasn't an empty seat, and there was so much love and support. It was a beautiful memorial service. Everyone keeps telling me how strong I am, but all I'm doing is just pushing forward.

We went to see the car today. The only thing that saved me was my size.

Today was our 1 1/2 yr anniversary.

Life is fucking gay as shit sometimes, and the last 6 days has been a huge roller coaster. In December, Justin and I lost our unborn child, and he was getting me through that. Or well, we were getting each other through that, but he was hiding his pain because he didn't want me to feel bad.

One thing I'm going to say to everyone as maybe some advice or just a word of little wisdom. Don't get so caught up in the bullshit arguments or petty disagreements. When you love someone - communicate, even the tiny things matter, make them smile even when you're sad, and laugh together. Do stupid, silly shit that other people would look at you both like you've lost your minds. But do it, and enjoy it, because it will matter more than you'll think. Doing all that with Justin has gotten me through these shit moments where I don't even know how to breathe. We never went to bed angry, hell we weren't angry at each other pretty much ever. Cuddle, hug, and kiss. Hold hands. Dance. The shit you don't think matters, matters.
