1) Read Books (Professional No-Limit Holdem for example)
2) Learn and Apply Concepts (SPR for example)
3) Earn money (IOPQ)
EZ Game.
Also, post your hands here on the board, try to include your opponents stats, and reads, and chew Zilla out for not telling you this stuff beforehand.
What's SPR and IOPQ?
doesn't matter... They are both gay.

IOPQ = a poster here on FTR. Who actually adamantly uses the acronym 'SPR' at every possible chance.
Hence, both gay. I would even say they both are cheating on each other with Ragnar, but that's just a rumor.
hahahaha Ragnar and IOPQ are going to get every new guy with the ole "SPR".
and then Spenda is gonna flip out
...be sure to ask about the freerolls.
...they're sponsored by the SPR....
Where can I read about the Professional No Limit? And Freerolls? What's a Freerolls?
Can someone explain Expected Value to me? It was explained to me as -100 x .5 and 210 x .5 then add those numbers together and you end with $5 and that is your EV. But what good is knowing the EV? How does one apply it? What does it represent? What if it was a negative EV? Does that mean I shouldn't play the pot?
Slow down buddy, get your hands on Harrington on holdem 1 2 and 3 for a good start on MTT play.Avoid cash play for a while till you can hold your own in a 9 man SnG.Play freerolls every hour at pitbull poker.A good site for a newbbie like you.Very soft player pool and freerolls all day and night.$10 can be had to try the site ask support when you sign up.My first profitable site when I was you.G.L.

Yes, avoid cash if you are a brand spanking new player like you seem to be.Ev is applied in cash and MTTs as well as freerolls.Don't be stupid and deposit at a site when you don't know what you're doing.Freeroll for a few months then try your hand at some $1 MTTs or SnGs.Quote:

You're going to have guys push their own agenda here with out considering that you may not be able to lose $100 a week or worse 10 times that while you sit like a turtle waiting on the nuts on a cash table.Trust me as excited as you are that will bore the living sh!t outta you. Then when you are bored you will gamble, and pick up bad habits that will take forever to break.
Tournaments MTTs , SnGs and the blessed freeroll have a beginning a middle and an end unlike cash play. They pick up pace as they go along and you have a prize to win if you do well. All good things for a new guy.EV. hand strength etc. can all be learned in a freeroll type of MTT & much cheaper than even a .o1 /.o2 cent cash game.G.L.
Man you really went into detail on your deep answer. "No " ok then.Next time tell us why a newbbie shouldn't learn the game as cheaply as possible.I.E. freerolls & $1 SnGs, paid for from his freeroll winnings before he deposits."Digest" explaination of E.V, or not. :roll:Quote:

I totally agree, I just think it sounds like he needs to get his feet wet a while for free. He's crispy new..!!!Quote:

Interesting side note:I was trying to remember what it was like in my first days online.I remember thinking a satellite was a poker tournament that players with the internet you get through a dish must be allowed to play.I.E. you couldn't play one unless you had this type of hookup.ROTF.I had this believe far too long because I was afraid I'd be seen as stupid to ask about it.So your'e ahead of me kid at least you have no fear of others judging you.G.L.

Arguing and shoving tournaments down this guys throat because you find them more entertaining dont mean dick. Theres an argument that because of spr (o snap) that they may be since there is usually no river action but lol at not pointing that out and just saying you love them to death and cant play cash games to save your life.
in reality, for a noobie choosing a game this is all there is to say
Cash games
-have fish
Mtts
-have fish
Sngs
-have fish
pick one to start out, go to the proper forum, and learn the shit out of it. ask questions post hand histories and i promise you wont be part of the .001% of players that find this forum and lose their entire roll in a week. to start, the most basic stuff that applies is in this forum, in the digest.

I've never seen a free to enter cash game in 3 plus years online versuses Free to enter MTTS with real cash prizes.Free vs deposit...free is cheaper aint it?But if a deposit seems the way to go for you, do it.He did ask what a freeroll was,I think playing a few will clear it right up for him.Quote:

What's ICM? Where can I try out these types of games you guys are talking about? Freerolls? Cash Games? MTTs? SnGs? I downloaded and made an account on Pokerstars last night but I haven't played yet because I've been reading the beginner's guide. http:// beginner-poker.flopturnriver. com/ I only finished this morning.
I like pitbull poker for freerolls. One every hour there.google poker/ICM.I C M stands for independant chip model.A system invented by Mike Carro, I believe with final table MTT play in mind.Just A math only view if you should push a hand preflop based on stack size in relation to opponents stack size blind size and position.Very good for single table SnGs.
Okay, so... This thread has went everywhere, and I'm pretty inclined to lock it. However, I realize that OP is quite new to poker, and I don't want him feeling as if he can't ask questions. However, the majority of his answers can be found elsewhere on the site.
So... 3Lem3nT, we have a search feature here on FTR that once used can lead you to the answer of numerous of your questions, not to mention there is this wonderful site called www.google.com , in which has loads of information to your most basic questions (What is a freeroll? What is ICM?). So please use those as your first attempt to find answers to your questions. If you can't find information through either google or the FTR search feature, then come to the forums and create a thread asking your questions. Remember though, you are likely not the first individual to have these thoughts, so there is most likely a thread dedicated to your question already out there
As far as all of the other debate, regarding MTT/Freeroll/Cash/etc, obviously it's not wise for new players to deposit any reasonable sum of money online and play blindlessly. However, a new player should be dedicating more time to studying than to playing in the beginning. So it would not be unreasonable for him to deposit $50 and play 2nl cash. Likewise, it is not unreasonable for him to play around with play money or freerolls in order to learn the very basics of poker (hand strength, betting sequences, etc) if he doesn't already know that. In the end it's really his decision whether he wants to play micro stakes cash/mtts/sngs/freerolls/play money.
So to 3Lem3nt, it's up to you what you want to play. If you don't want to put money into a poker site just yet, then play some play money or freerolls until you feel comfortable to put real money on. If you want to play for real money right away (it's not a bad thing), then deposit say $50 on Pokerstars and play 2nl ($0.01/$0.02). Keep in mind though, that you aren't guarenteed to win, and therefore you could lose the $50, so only deposit with that in mind.
Either way, this thread is about done for imo. Hopefully, OP will begin searching for his questions first before creating a thread about it.
Alrighty, Thanks.
No problem. Good luck. And seriously, I'm not meaning don't post your questions on here. It's just this forum has been around for quite some time, and there has been threads dedicated to ICM, freerolls, etc, so none of those questions are new. So you can find answers to those types of questions elsewhere. If you have a question regarding a hand, or a situation, or thoughts about things poker related that either hasn't been discussed before or it might be better to discuss further, then by all means create a thread for it (like if after reading about ICM some, you still don't understand it, the post your questions).
Some quick tips
1) Read the beginners digest thread at the top of this forum throughly.
2) Watch Big Spenda's micro stakes videos.
3) Use the search feature, you can also go to people's profiles to find all the threads they've ever made.
4) If you play cash start off with play money for a little bit, then grind 2NL (0.01c/0.02c).
5) http://www.flopturnriver.com/Bankrol...ement-101.html
welcome guy.
I new in here too. Loking some topics.
Amazing forum.
The fact that you have enough patience to read a beginners guide before you play when I can see that you are amped up to play poker bodes well for your future as a poker player.Stax is right this thread is dead just wanted to welcome you to poker and I hope you make a decent bank roll however you decide to start.G.L.Quote:

I'm going to make an offer here to the original poster. As you are so new to the game I'll do a sweat session with you. What this means is that you download some software and you can then watch me play and I'll talk you through why i'm making the bets I am and you can ask questions etc. Basics you'll need are a headset with microphone .
With my style of play I may not be the best to show you how to play, but its better than sitting there without a clue what you are doing. One big advantage it will give you is that you won't start out by developing some really horrendous habits that are hard to break as you learn more about the game.
Get your ass into IRC
I am good at recognizing winners. You are a winner.
This is because you will play tight- only very good hands and pairs. Also you dont bluff much and thats awesome.
Another thing that makes you a winner is that you dont call preflop raises with AJ and worse.
At least this will give you a good start.
Discipline was the first skill I honed to perfection. I rushed through the stakes without any experience- just a very solid theoretical basis.
Keith is giving you an excellent deal. Take it.
What the hell, go to the sticky that I hope is still in the community forums and get in IRC. Do this, improve, repeat, so ez.
Don't want to hijack this thread but .....
If someone is prepared to do this, i would be more than happy to download whatever i need to get involved. I, too, am new, and have gotten a lot out of some of the video's (any other recommendations for someone playing NL low stakes and SnG ?), but would love to go live (so to speak) with someone actually playing, and prepared to answer some Q's on the go.Quote:

We took a bit of a beat on a couple (sucked out on the river twice on all-in), but i persisted, and just fell short of a break even for the day.
3LeM3nT : it is definately worth doing a sweat session, as there are so many questions that can be answered whilst playing live. Even in the short period Keith has been playing, i found his help most useful, and will look to building on it in the near future.
Thanks again Keith.

In a way it was probably one of the best starts to ring play that you could get. You were unlucky but when the money went in you were ahead, over the long run doing that will make you money. The number of junk hands that were tossed that ended up which would have won were also a blessing in disguise as well.If that had happened whilst you were playing on your own, its most likely that you would then have started playing those junk hands , winning with them and then having positive feedback and in the long run losing money from playing junk.
Another thing that will make a big difference is that you now know that you don't want to be playing a big pot with a mediocre hand or playing a small pot with a big hand.Discussing where the opponents had made bad bet sizes and the reasons why will help you, just as much as telling you what the right bet size for your hand is.
Its good to know that you finished up nearly even after the bad beats that you took and hopefully some of the advice will continuie to sink in and by following it and getting success will bring its own positive feedback and reassure you that you are doing the right things.
Good luck and hopefully we'll be doing some follow up sessions.
Thanks again Keith.
I ended up downloading holdem software, just going to sit down and work my way through it. Will search the forums on here to find some good advice on setup.
I have worked out the graphing side to it.
Let the rollercoaster ride begin.
