I'm back! I've just about 4 days off from poker to clear my mind. (See this: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...r=asc&start=70). As I noted, I'd been playing more in August than any month in my life so far, and was simply getting burnt out.

Today, I thought it's Spring, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and I have nothing better to do, so why not get back in the swing?

Whether it's a coincidence or not, the break certainly seemed to work. I've put in a real solid $1673 day. 1050 hands and I made only one significant mistake. I've made back double what I lost in my last few days of August. I've also resolved the Bermuda Triangle of my poker existence... which is "how do I beat Stars ring games"? Well, I've found the neccessary confidence; the players there are actually pretty damn bad. They're a little nittier than Party or Bodog, but actually more exploitable, and that suits me just fine.

SB was a bit of a donk. He seemed to make these small blocking type bets with drawing hands or as a hopeful attempt to steal a pot that nobody wants. Well, I'm not having any of that. Here, I like a promotional raise. There's a lot of stuff that have equity against me that might fold. I'd like to either take it down or get it heads up. If I fold out a top pair or two pair, my pair of 2s might win high, and naturally I wouldn't mind pushing out A3. If button folds and SB calls I'm likely to get a free turn card. I think a raise is mandatory, but I wouldn't neccessarily disagree with a slightly smaller one, say to $50 would also be good.

Villain shows 5d Ac 8c 3h for a counterfeited NLD with no counterfeit protection. This is why chasing low with no counter, especially with no CFP. On the flop, he should have folded, and definitely on the turn. He should have realized he was calling to get half back at best and was probably getting freerolled by either a straight draw or flush draw or both.

Villain has a rainbow TJQK and should definitely have folded to the turn raise. With trips and no ace kicker on a board with 2 suited and 2 lows, he is just not going to scoop very often with that hand.

AFTERMATH:

I'd have to say I ran fairly well today. I won two pots where I had 58% and 60% equity. I'm never going to get a lot of suckouts, because I just don't give myself the chance, so as long as I'm winning my share when I'm the favourite, I should always do well. I didn't have it all my way though... got 1-outed (flop all in) but my hand was so good I still got half.

Freeroll defined: a situation where if the hand was concluded immediately, the result would be a split, but the subsequent cards can improve your hand to scoop, but cannot improve him to scoop (or you're much more likely to scoop him than vice versa).

Today I made over $2,100 excluding rakeback. Excellent day. I ran well in most of my big pots. Did suffer a beat against a total fish (that always gets on my nerve), but I can't complain.

I'm now +$4750 since the start of the operation (about a week ago), net of any rakeback & bonuses. Naturally I'm thrilled with this, having stumbled around for bit near the end of last month that caused the temporary suspension of my operation.

I've made two improvements in my game.

One, I realized that the essence of PLO8 is in the handling of medium sized pots. The big pots tend to just play themselves, and you can't really control whether you get heatered or coolered. If you win the battle of the medium size pots, then when you run cold your losses are cushioned, and when you run hot, you run *really* hot.

But of course it's always nice when a donk just throw money at you like this (I don't know what he's thinking... I've just been playing my usual smallball style)

HERE'S THE CRUCIAL STREET. IS NUT LOW + A PAIR OF TENS GOOD ENOUGH TO BET?

I'm convinced that if a bet is correct, then the only correct bet size is pot size because the only hand that I realistically beat is A2 with a worse high, and that hand would call the maximum. Betting the maximum may also bluff out a dry pair of kings. If he's real chickenshit he might fold 2 pair fearing a straight, but if he has any hand reading ability he would know this is a small, though not entirely non-existent possibility.

If I were in my opponent's position, I think having checked the turn and river he's clearly trying to showdown cheap, so I decide to make the play that he probably least wants to see.

Thoughts?

I had a good short session last night, then I played for about 3 hours this morning. I played pretty mediocre, my cards were mediocre, but I limited the damage to $100.

Which means that my net winnings since 31/8 (september in my country, but stupid american time zones put me out) is a healthy $5150. All my hands were pretty standard, so I'll share something else.

Couple of days ago I felt a bit nostalgic so I sent emails to my friends overseas. One girl in particular I'm particularly fond of... last September (wow it's a whole year now) we really hit off but she was going to the other side of the world for an indefinite time. So our love story was cut short after two weeks and we were still wildly infatuated with each other, but she quite sensibly decided we were better off just keeping the good memories rather than trying to pursue a doomed distance relationship (we're both too bohemian to make it work).

So today she sent me an email. Very short, just says she misses me but she's enjoying herself and having the time of her life. And she sent me a song (she sings and plays guitar) she recorded. It's actually an esoteric country-style ballad called "once in a very blue moon". She's got a beautiful voice and I was very moved. I'll share with you the lyrics, while I daydream of her a little:

Well, my heater couldn't last forever.

Today was the opposite of yesterday when I played like shit and made a few hundred. Today I played world class, and ended up losing a few hundred. Poker is funny isn't it? All you can do is keep playing your best and let the results take care of themselves.

Just got really unlucky. Taking all the pots over 200 where we were all in before the river, I ran -1800 compared to expectation. It doesn't mean anything of course, and I know that: I just wanted to confirm my gut feeling that I was very unlucky rather than just blaming variance 'cos it's easy to do.

That obliterated the hard grind in the morning (I just wasn't getting any cards but my superior skill was keeping me afloat). I proceeded to go on tilt (and lost a big pot as a small favourite when my set of aces all in on the turn lost to a low draw + flush draw hit the rivered flush). But my session was partially saved when for whatever reason, villain decides I have no hand here.

Cold cards, tilt, and getting sucked out. Happens to the best of us. I'm pretty resilient to this shit but the sequence of the most ridiculous crap imaginable finally got to me, and I cracked.

And I am sick. I can't breathe. I have a pollen allergy and my life sucks.

I have an exam to do on Thursday. I have a few thousand words to write by the end of the month, but I don't want to do shit. I need to get smashed or high or something, but I can't even do that because in my current health condition I am just going to die.

Shit, I just tallied up my results and it isn't even as bad as I thought. I am still up $7,400 for the month and down only $1000 from my last post. I must be playing pretty well up to this point because all I can recall is the endless string of ridiculous shit that keeps happening.

I don't know what I'm going to do for now. I'm sick and I can't really go anywhere or do anything. I wouldn't mind to just jump on a plane and get away from all this shit, but I have these fucking exams to do. I need to find something that will make me happy. As I said, I'm so sick I can't do the outdoor activities, or dance, or get smashed, or high, or even call my FWBs to sleep over because I'm fucking contagious. And I can't play poker because in this state of mind I'm just going to get killed.

I'm just depressed.

I'm a man and I admit my mistakes but I am just totally not reading his play at the moment. He's playing fundamentally unsound, but if I don't adjust then I'm the fish, not he.
