Definition
In live poker, a card that is dealt dead from the deck before dealing a live card. The purpose of the burn card is to reduce the effectiveness of card marking, because the card that is displayed on the top of the deck (and which may be visible during the previous round of betting) will not be a card that is dealt live to a player or into the community cards. When a card is mistakenly exposed or incorrectly dealt during a deal, many casinos will designate that card as the burn card and will not burn another card before dealing the next round.
Example
In Texas hold 'em, before dealing the turn and the river, the dealer will burn a card.
