    Default editing in werewolf

what do people think about editing posts in werewolf?

why is it so bad? people quote important posts, and if we ever caught someone editing a post from long ago, we could use that as evidence in game.

i think at least we should have an understanding that if you are editing a post very soon after making it (like less than 2min) then its allowed as long as you are editing it because of grammar or sentence structure or formatting or something

just dont edit posts when you change your mind on something but rather edit the posts when it makes them more clear

it seems like it tilted some people that i did it. if the moderator sees someone doing it in a spot thats not cool (like editing a post from hours ago) then the moderator can do whatever they want to address it and punish them. if no one notices the edit then its probably not a big deal anyway

    thoughts??

The general problem with editing is that the forum is the only record of whats happened in the game. If you say something suspicious, it catches someone's eye, but you edit it out later, you've effectively prevented a case from being brought against you. You've essentially "changed the past".

Further, and perhaps more convincingly, its important that we as players KNOW that every post is unedited. We need to know that the post we're relying on for our case/defense/accusation/etc is the real deal, and that others can go back and look at it without worry.

Obvious hyperbole is like if Ong went back and deleted/edited out all his posts after he got caught. Or if he just changed them slightly so that we couldnt trust what he said was what he really said.

    ----

Regarding this 2min editing solution, its not bad in theory. However, it relies heavily on the FTR mods. You, Rilla, Jyms, etc are not always playing these games, and even when you are, you're not always able to provide the scrutiny needed to ensure the 'record' is legitimate. It can also be taxing if people are constantly editing posts for grammar, structure, word choice, etc and all of these posts need to be reviewed. Leaving this just to the moderator sounds like a cruel punishment as well. Finally, it will create scenarios that detract from the game when a potential mistake occurs. If an edit seems potentially unsatisfactory, it will likely get posted in thread (or else the player/mod that caught it is privy to secret information), and then create a discussion that is not about wolf hunting but modkilling.

So im strictly against it, mostly because its easier and more efficient to just outlaw all types of edits while the downside of losing the edit ability is fairly minor.

One last thing: I believe mods have stronger editing powers than regular posters. If this is the case, it creates an unfair and unnecessary advantage between players.

I've make the mistake a lot. I post things all over the forum and even on FB. I click send and then read it. I sometimes click edit right away and fix spelling and spacing issues from my typing style. Words look like teh, waht, ahd instead of and. But I have never read another post and edited mine. It's a hard habit to break. But it's never anything but to make it more legible. I sometimes do it here but I have been working on it. It's never even 2 minutes, more like 5 seconds

It's not just so the posts can be used as reliable evidence, I thought I explained it pretty well to monkey in the game thread. To out it in as few words as possible, you may make mistakes when under pressure as a wolf that you wouldn't otherwise, and you shouldn't be able to edit them out. If you are obsessive about avoiding grammatical errors and spelling mistakes then use the preview button.

In theory I am ok with editing within, say, 2 minutes. I'm also in the habit of producing grammatically incorrect sentences and mess up words. The problem is that we can't know if an edit actually happened within that timespan or not. Unless the subforum was set up to automatically disallow edits within 2 minutes, it's best to go with a no-edit rule.

edit: (haha i edit) I have to add that it could lead to people posting, then quickly retracting when they read their post.. this is bad too. No edit should be enforced.

Werewolf is different whereby if you make a grammatical error its perfectly acceptable to post again to correct it. There's really no need to edit the post for that reason

Here's one reason you shouldn't be editing posts... if someone who has a tendency to make lots of grammar or spelling errors suddenly isn't making any (maybe because he's editing them without anyone being aware), then it might look like you're previewing your posts and correcting them before posting. That's a wolf tell.

But, more to the point, mods can see what has and hasn't been edited. Regular forum users cannot. This puts mods at an unfair advantage, if editing is allowed. No-one cares if you post retard grammar, or spell something incorrectly. No-one but yourself, anyway.

It's tilting for the mod because it shows a lack of respect towards the rules which were made clear. And it's tilting for others becuase we can't see what it said before. If people are allowed to edit out bad grammar, it's a matter of time before someone edits out a genuine wolf fuck up.

    So don't do it, please.

theres no reason that there couldn't be a game thread sub forum where no editing is allowed as in the staking forum. everyone is in the same boat then ....apart from admins ....but they don't play anyway

We could maybe get this forum to be set up that way.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to care about fixing typos and shit, it's just at the beginning of every game I forget at first because it's just habit from posting everywhere. I don't think I have actually done it this game because I have been on my phone the whole game and I almost always proof read on my phone because of how bad the swype keyboard can be at times

Swype is ok but I'd suggest switching to swiftkey because it corrects your spelling AND predicts your words based on history.

If I type 'Ly' it autocompletes to 'lynch', with 'bigred', 'bikes' and 'daven' as the next three one-click suggestions. Such a timesaver.

    himself fucker.
In one game, when the wolf's den was a separate subforum, I accidentally crossposted into the game thread. Deleted that shit ASAP. Would do it again (if I did it again).

I guess it's worth risking modkill for if you know you get lynched anyway. But yeah I'd modkill your ass for that if mod.

    Lol.

Also I should really get me one of these, I don't use my phone often to type on forums but my text messages are more and more often filled with crappy misplaced letters.

Definitely worth a modkill if it's like, "We can't nom daven tonight 'cause he's the only townie on gator's suspect list."
