    Default Poker Training Sites

(Before I start wasn't sure which forum to put this, please move it if necessary)

For a while now I've been wanting to subscribe to a poker training site to aid my studies on the game. I found a site that reviewed pretty much everything out there with ratings for each on each aspect offered on each site eg ring stt mtt and so on.

I've come to the conclusion that sitngogrinders is probably the one that offers the best value for money, considering that there are subsriptions that include wiz, however, it seems to concentrate on stts which is of no use really, as I want a site that has a good number of videos on mtts also.

The review on PokerVT is quite critical - not least for the fact that the activation fee is subsantial, to say the least. So that has been ruled out. Apparently Negreanu's offerings are very few.

Cardrunners also seems to be a favourite but that is ring game heavy (so far as I understand) with little focus on stts.

So, my question is: Do any of you have first hand experience of training sites and the ability to say which site is the best for stt/mtts.

And a subquestion - Do any sites cover PLO as I am still just learning that game and would regard my skill level in PLO as "beginner".

Oh, a final q - a friend of mine is smashing DONs on Stars. I don't see any sites with videos on that and firmly believe he could do guest videos (his ss certainly is good enough for him to be considered by sites). Does anyone know who pays the most to guests as they seem to want total rights when they take videos?

Any other comments on training sites are most welcome. ty.

Umm, how about posting hands/tourneys here as a starting point, then deciding whether you need to use a training site?

Otherwise, I have heard positive things about grindersschool (a few of the foundation members at FTR are behind it) but don't have any personal experience with it.

Have you looked at grinderschool.com? their videos are pretty diversified. They have some (although only 6max cash) PLO. They have lots on STT, MT sng, etc; including double or nothings.

full subscription is cheap too, I was expecting to pay much more.

edit: doh... taipan beat me 2 it.

these are the one's I'd recommend (the last of the 3 is a newer site but looks promising... geared towards MTT not SNG... the other two are great for both).
Honestly I didn't really care much for Grinderschool. For SNG's.. I found there was too much focus on trying to put out quantity instead of just 'quality' (and had to say I disagreed with ALOT of the play in the vids.). One of the SNG vid. producers was Excellent though -- Matt Glitlr but unfortunately there's no new material on there from him.
The site's a good deal for a newer player and has a large variety of content but as mentioned, what really turned me off was the large number of SNG vids. that displayed really bad play (for STT's anyways).

@ taipan - I most certainly will take advantage of posting HHs, however, as I have been playing for over 5 years (although, granted, only about 6mnths online) I believe there is only so much you can learn from what is written eg from the numerous books/magazine articles I've read. Almost every day my friend and I dicsuss poker and even tho he has a little more time played (including over 3 years online) we still find ourselves 'stuck' for want of a better word as to the right plays to make sometimes. HH reviews are great but I think watching the plays and understanding the approach of winning players is something everyone should take advantage of irrespective of how good anyone thinks they are. On some levels, without wishing to sound arrogant, I feel I am an advanced player now, but on others such as ICM I would regard myself as a beginner.

@ poker orifice - bizarre that that you recommend pokerxfactor we were just reading about that site in a mag only yesterday!

Why not give us a go and post a few HHs that you found difficult, and see what discussion ensues? That's how I improved my game. Not to say that training sites aren't useful, but posting and discussing hands can be a great way to learn.

I'm always up for learning Taipan in as many ways as is possible. I learn every day. I've been sweating with a friend for months and months now (he's on here too he joined soon after I told him about FTR). From the sweats I've developed my game seemingly exponentially. The number of times we have had difficult decisions is countless.
He'll often ask me "what do you do here?" I quickly analyse the situation and posit my idea. Equally quickly he retorts. It's the syntym antonym paradigm live. We rarely find ourselves unable to conclude before timing out and usually make the correct decision.
We still have a long way to go and my friend and I highly regard comments we have seen on FTR.
He'll often say to me: "Have you seen Taipan's take on this?" We hold you in high regard...

footnote - the only reason you haven't seen HHs by me so far is because I haven't been able to play for days n days. First I get rogue spyware which prevent me from opening FT, then tracker fails to reinstall (after I reformat my computer) properly - why is it such a complicated program to install and operate??

Well, I'm off to Europe for a week on Fri. Am gonna get a live freezeout tourny in while in Amsterdam, just hope being stoned doesn't affect my play!!! Will be posting HHs soon after I return.

ty for your comments I agree you can learn a lot from HH deconstruction.

    Hey Poker Oriface,

A lot has changed since the last time you were a member over 6-months ago. We've got 2 SNG instructors now with Sharkscope Stars, Reasons14 and Piratos14 and have added Dozer and Badgers onto our already large instructor list. We have built a backlog of 700 poker videos while not having to raise prices in this poor economy.

I wish you would have posted more criticisms during your previous free month membership to Grinderschool from our Christmas Promotion. I only saw you say positive things to say about us while on the site .

Dneureiter and Taipan are right with their respective posts. We offer daily releases from all games including Full Ring, 6-max, SNGs and MTTs with several releases each month of PLO, Heads-up and mixed game content. You should also be taking advantage of all free advice possible and that includes posting hand histories and listening to free poker podcasts.

If you would like, I would be more than happy to give you (Poker Orifice) a free month of Grinderschool for you to check it out again.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback. It is my job to listen to you guys and make our site the best.

    Thanks,

    Awesome offer Jeff.
For sure I should've mentioned what I didn't like about the site at the time(there was plenty that I did like though... some of it ALOT). I think it'd be best (imo) to dump some of the SNG stuff that you had on there before though... 'quality over quantity'. I don't want to name names.. but I'm pretty certain you're aware of which ones might not be so great (Glitlr does a review & listening to other coach not really listening to him, & trying to backup some bad play.... this was educational in itself (or re-assuring).. but just backed up the notion that some of the other sng content shouldn't really even be on there (imo). {idk if 'shouldn't' is the correct word.... maybe more like... 'probably be better off without it'}.

Hey Jeff, i also used to be a memeber...is it still 25 for which amount of time?? I really liked the member tourneys..

In fact, iirc, wasnt piratos a member around the time when i was about 6m-1y ago?? he didnt seem that excellent of a player, not that he qwas bad by any means but a star on sharkscope is very solid. Maybe ill resign up because my pwnage sub. just ended...

Hey Roco, There are no membership options for $25 . Here is a basic summary:

One month micro stakes: $10 ($0.33 /day FTW)
    3-month Full Stakes for $34.99 ($0.39/day)

For the extra less than $2/month you get access to 4x as many videos, and gets down to the same price if you go even more long term such as the 6-month or 12-month subscription option.

A one-month full stakes subscription on its own is $19.99 and you can upgrade anytime from a micro-stakes to full stakes for $10.

About Piratos: We signed up Piratos as soon as he got the sharkscope star and even given the language barrier his videos have constantly received high marks from our subscribers. He originally was a member in Spring of 2008 but has been releasing videos for us now for 4-months.

Feel free to ask more questions!

    Jeff
