I tend to fold hands like A3 vs maniacs, even HU, simply because we're very rarely dominant. I'd be going something like AT+ 77+, because I feel this range will hold up against villains often enough to make it better than calling a wider range that might still be ahead, but not by much. I don't fancy 55-45 spots for stacks, not when I'm confident villain is gonna shove himself into a worse spot often enough.
It's possible that some people switch to push-or-fold with average sized stacks short handed because they're aware they lack the skills and/or endurance to play short handed, especially at final table of a gruelling tournament. Personally, I feel like I have an edge when short handed in a long MTT because I have long game endurance and am happy to adjust from tight aggressive to loose aggressive short handed. It's just a shame I very rarely find myself short handed in such games.
