When someone like MrSmokey pushes over a big reraise, um probably time to leave when it's this early in the tourney. Poker gods say bad fold since the K came on the flop. I would probably call since I'm a low stakes donkey and I'm use to bad players pushing with a very wide range in this situation. I would also get a boner thinking that I had a chance to bust MrSmokey.

Hey guy i am SuperAstaroth on FTP i was talking to you in the 750k last night, wanna give me your thoughts on this hand?

I have 20k chips left, blinds are 1,000 / 2,000 with some amount of antes, either way im starting to get in trouble here with every orbit - 173 left (261 paid). I am in the CO with A10os, another shorty with 26k pushes from UTG+1 and it foled around to me... he has me covered.

Is this borderline / easy fold / easy call given situation?

easy fold, 26k is not that desperate so you're up against something like AJ+/77+.

I saw those $109 hands, sick.

-I'm guessing you're playing on other sites as well? I can't find 8-12 on stars at a time unless you're playing 180s?

Unsure about river c/r or just bet. Opps b/c is pretty horrible obv. My default line is to lead this flop, sometimes c/c and lead turn.

Tough spot, 30/560 left in Mulligan, avg around 40-50k. Just calling seems too weak but a push feels -ev (tight utg range, trappy(?) cold call).

    Why aren't you raising preflop?

You just turned JJ into 66 (a hand to play for set value only).

Johnny - How often in mtts do you cold steal blinds? As in, you raise 3x with cards that you will insta-fold to a raise PF?

Would you shove TT in that spot? 99?

K2: Quite often of course, a reraise is a pretty strong hand usually

You answered my question with a question I don't understand.

If your range on your UTG opp is 99+, AK. Then you are playing for set value, the set didn't come, easy fold.

If your range on utg is wider, than the CO (whosehouse) just set you up perfectly for the squeeze which I don't understand why you aren't using. Raise to like 24 k. If UTG repops, you have enough room to fold. If he folds - yay! you just increassd your stack by close to 25%.

I don't like raise/fold because it doesn't use the hand value (I could play atc like this).

Raise/call seems -ev but I'm too lazy right now to calculate it.

lol any good hands with belowabove?

And johnny, you are way more aggressive and play a lot more streets than im used to in MTT's. It just confuses me as a whole, do you think being aggressive 40bb+ deep exploits donk players a lot?

Okay, well what im confused about is I see a lot more turn and river aggression and play with you and also challenging bigger stacks and not just raise/cbet and then give up mode which I think is interesting.

Runner up in the stars 109r today for a nice 16.6k

Also just busted out of the late FT 109 (5/368).. Drphil had been playing very tight (unlike the rest of the donkeys at the table).

Really annoying hand, I ended up wanting to call but I was just a second late

Hey johnny, the 77 hand where you called AI 4 ways with below and Bax in the pot; on the thread in p5s both below and Bax said you should have folded... Can you find a reason for their argument, do you think they are flat out 100% wrong? I wish they had posted more reasoning because it's hard to differentiate what is "correct" between JFish playing 77 for pot odds and two elite mtt players saying it's a fold, an easy one at that.

I agree with them now. I overestimated how much value a big stack has.. E.g. having an average stack 4 times is more valuable than 1 time a 4xavg stack.

    Cool.

-What do you think makes a great mtt player...great?

    -What makes you so good?

-Lets put your skill level on a scale and say that you are a 10/10 mtt player - what changes happened in your game from 5/10 untill now?

-Advice on games to play to build a bankroll?

Im gonna post a big noob question now here since i know you have access to all sites available and therefore the best MTTs around.

Im thinking of playing a few MTTs along with my main cahs game. Buyin up to $50 maybe.

What MTT offers the most value in your opinion? best overlay etc.

i began reading a few days ago and only made it to the 4th apragraph. better read on so.

I just got to thinking coz i watched zpace_man play a MTT on CR vid and mentioned PP was good coz some gauranteed money games had only 180 entrants or so. I can only really play weekends really coz most good weekday game are geared towards US timezone (tho if there are any about 7pm GMT tell me plz)

Successful poker is about correctly adjusting to new situations and make consistently good decisions. Great mtt players recognize opportunities and take them.

    -What makes you so good?
My push/fold game is close to perfect imo, early stage play is fine too, and I have a relatively (compared to avg tournament player) good postflop game. There's a decent edge when it's shorthanded too because most tournament players are used to full ring.
-Lets put your skill level on a scale and say that you are a 10/10 mtt player - what changes happened in your game from 5/10 untill now?
I'm nowhere 10/10, I could improve a lot on my reads for example.

The thing that helped me improve the most was playing sng's.
-Advice on games to play to build a bankroll?

First start at sng's. Just start at the lowest and grind until you can beat the 26s or something. After that you'll probably have the br and skill set to beat mtt's up to 50$.

I see absolutely retarded stuff at Party, but my Roi is still the highest at Stars, even though the overall playing level is higher (software is great too). I'd just play anything between 20-50$ at Stars if I were you. I wouldn't play cash and tournaments at the same time though. gl

As more and more online players are getting more and more sophisticated (i.e. most now understand what M is), the most important skill is learning to play the players at your table rather than just playing position and cards.

There will always be that glorious rare tourney where you just get hit in the face with cards and as long as you don't donk em off, you will go far.

But for the vast majority of tourneys you need to learn how to gain chips without cards. Doing that means that you have to learn how to play players.

hmmm, guess I better go back to the $5 SnG's I was never really good at anyway... never enjoyed push/fold poker, but I guess that's the nature of the beast and something I can't be missing.

Hi Johnny, as you probably know I'm an SNG player, and I'm looking to play a few more MTTs. I'm currently playing the Stars $27s (with my roll I really should be playing the $60s but when I moved up I hit a bad run so I'm scared now!).

Why do you say that the thing that helped you improve the most was playing SNGs? What tips can you give a SNG player looking to play MTTs?

Hey Johnny, lately I've been joining you on the dark side and becoming a donkament player. A couple of questions. First,

Why not? When I'm only still alive in one or two donkaments and I don't want to register for any more, I'll often look for a couple of really soft cash game tables and sit at them until I'm done. Do you think it's like impossible to play well at both at the same time?

Also, here's a hand from this morning. I have a note on this guy that says "pushes way too wide a range." After running some numbers afterwards, I believe my call was correct, but I just wanted confirmation from a good player.

Correct push/fold poker is really important in the late stages..

Not impossible, it's just that I do very bad in cashgames now if I play them (laggy aggro monkey weeeeeeeeeee).

Ugh, yea, Tough to fold that... I won't even begin to try and give advice there...

Hand two I tend to think you're behind to anything with that pre-flop action, i.e. you have at most 10 outs. wanna gamble?
    Hey knucklehead! Bonk!

hand 1 - in a tourney this COULD be a missed f/d. I don't know if it's enough to fold.
hand 2 - well, he could have AK... wait, he's the original raiser, not re-raiser. Set? Close. I would say call because it's so early may as well gambeezol.

1: I called, Villain showed K9. lol Party donks.
2: I thought I got close to correct odds vs. an overpair, sometimes I'm even ahead, sometimes I run into a set. I shoved and sucked out vs. KK.

Hey Johnny Fish or any one else out there that is kind enough to answer, i was just wondering what you think the best tourneys on fulltilt are for someone with about a 1000$ br??? I can get in pretty easy thru the 8$ sats for 26 tokens, so its not THAT bad BR management, and i do ring on the side. Im a good tournament player in my opinion, but nothing too special. Had 4000$ profit in tourneys after playing on my friends account for 2 months.
    Thanks

Playing lots of $26 tournaments on a 1K bankroll isn't a great idea, doesn't matter whether you get in by satellites or not. Just play the $11 and $8.80 tournaments and the $1 and $3 rebuys until you have 2K which shouldn't be long.

uggg. Fulltilt doesnt have n e 8$ tourneys (other than sats) but they have some 11$ ones that should be pretty good. I really dont think the 1$ rebuys would b worth my time because if i win a 20$ sng i can make just as much as a 5th-3rd finish. 3$ rebuys sound ok but i dont think fulltilt has them(except sats). I dont think it would b that bad br management for me to do the 26$ ones like 5 times a week or so. So if i do do the 26$ tourneys, should i just do the 26k n 19k since they have the biggest guarantee, or are the smaller ones easier?

Quick update. I've been running bad for a few weeks now even though I finished May up (7th consecutive winning mtt month)..

I've been going through my '07 stats and the problem seems to be the higher buyings (150+). I'm running at -36% over 460 150+ tourneys (-49k ).

    I'm doing quite good at 109 freezeouts though, +98% over 600 (+64k).

If you insist on playing $26 tourneys, you should probably stick to the smaller ones because there's less variance. Then again, you seem pretty determined to play above your bankroll so I guess I hope you get lucky.

And they do have a $3 rebuy every day it gets about 200 entries and the first prize is about $500, also a $2 rebuy with a first prize of about $300. I think those would be good tournaments to play.

what is the probability that three players will get dealt AA KK and QQ at a 9 handed table, and the AA will hit a royal? In other words, even though you play a redonkulous amount of poker, will it ever happen in your lifetime again?

That is the fucking sickest thing that I have ever seen.

someone at table being dealt AA = 1 in 24.5
someone else at table being dealt KK = 1 in 25.5
someone else at table being dealt QQ = 1 in 26.8

if those 3 hands are at the table, 1 in 36 there are two suits for AA to make a royal, 17 in 36 there's just one suit

if one royal is possible, the player with AA will hit it about 1 in 30K

    so (1/24.5)(1/25.5)(1/26.8)(19/36)(1/30K) = 1 in 950 million.

Probably won't happen to johnny again but it's happened a few times before.

Another wierd thing is that a different hand is ahead on each street, while crushing the other 2. Imagine it happening at a casino, it'd be chaos!

    Mental hand.
