    Default Controversial Call

PP $30+3 NL Hold'em MTT with 550 registered. 1-60 gets money. 27 people left, blinds 1k-2k. I tried to steal with 5h 3h (mistake). However, when another player goes all-in I think it is profitable to call this bet, as I put him on two high cards (AK at the worst). Please let me know what you think, and then I'll give you my thought process on it.

    Hi. Thanks for your post.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'd have folded that 36s after getting re-raised like that.
I think that person went all-in to try and block your steal attempt.

It's a good idea to ask if it's worth risking 60% of your stack for a call.

Your read was right, but you didn't have the cards to back it up. I've had that happen to me, too, so don't feel bad.

Had the call been for 6K...or 2000 more than what you bluffed, I would make the call. For more than 1/2 your stack that is a clear fold....3-5s is not favored against any random hand UTG is going to limp with this late in a tourney. The only reason to limp anything from early position at this stage of a tourney is to induce a steal attempt

From a pot odds perspective I think your play is correct as long as you are sure that he doesn't have a pair... with 35 you need to be REALLY sure since if he does have a pair you'll probably be stuck with two unders and be an uber dog.

My problem with your play is that the blinds (especially the BB) are almost pot commited pre flop, so basically you're deciding to gamble a little less than half your stack with 35.

Also since pot odds are going to dictate a call anyway, why not just move in? Obviously you were going to get called here either way, but making the play this way you give the small blind the idea that you may be willing to fold.

At that point in a tournament, I probably agree that I shouldn't have called an all-in with that hand (and definitely shouldn't have tried to steal). I didn't think he had a pair, but then again, he could easily have had one. 35 suited is 40%-60% against AK, so I figured I was a 3-to-2 dog. After he went all-in, the pot was laying me 1-to-3, so I called based on pot odds.

The mistake was raising with 35 suited in the first place. Also, because it is a tournament and pot odds mean less, I probably should have laid it down. It probably also depends on if you are an accumulist or survivalist. I'm usually the former, but with a stack like that, I should probably have been camping out at that point in the tourney.

******** I just noticed this. For some reason the HH shows that it was UTG who raised all-in. It was actually the SB -- that's why I raised, there were no limpers. That HH converter hasn't been so great for me.
