Default College Poker Tournament in Florida

bestbet in Jacksonville is hosting a Texas Hold em' tourney that only college studednts my play in. The tournament will take place on the 15th of December.

This will be my first major tournament if it can even be classified as major.

I was just wondering if these are usually large events and if the final table members get noticed in the poker world. I will be playing regardless, but definitely want to get some recognition if I do well. It'd be a great way to make a splash before I turn 21.

Try to throw together as many home games as you can... make it a small buy-in, like $5 or less. Don't ever brag about your poker ambitions when you invite people. Make it sound like a fun/party type of thing just for fun.

Playing short handed against amateurs is very different from the final table, but the familiarity with playing live will be invaluable.

Pay attention to your tells and everyone else's tells while you play. Everything can be a tell, and the intentional stuff is always suspect, so look for the unintentional stuff.

Making final tables gets you nothing in the poker world unless you're a woman or it's the main event.

Definitely some great advice. I've been doing a bit of them, but should host more!

    Thanks a lot!

I'm not a women and it isn't a main event

Would it even boost a player's reputation on a state level? Like would some players from Florida take note of that?

The poker world is biggggggg. It really depends on what level you mean. I know a guy who writes a blog about his local poker scene and to quote:

"Then next I bumped into Ben who I believe (plenty disagree with this) is the best regular player at G Cov. "

So in terms of that, he's recognised by everyone in his local casino because he plays there a lot. It's the same in my local casino - the regulars all have opinions on the other regulars/semi-regulars.

Then there's known in your country, which in the US would be something like WSOP-Circuit or one of the large Vegas festivals I imagine. The buyins have gone from casino level to a couple of grand there tho. In the UK it's the UK and Ireland Poker Tour sponsored by Pokerstars as they cover it well and it's on TV.

If you want to be known to the whole poker world through live poker, EPTs might be an option (€5k-€10k) or the PCA, along with the WSOP Main Event.

The best way to get noticed is basically to win, either titles or money (and the more money with each title, the better). Winning a lot of casino competitions will get you noticed, then to move up a Circuit ring, then a bracelet, etc

Even if the buyin was $10,000... the answer is still no. Too many peeps playing too much poker all over that place. It's a big pond now adays.

The only place that I know of that hosts satellite tournaments for PCA is PokerStars which I can't play in since I'm in the US. Are there any live tournaments or online options that you know of for US players to get into it via satellite?

Sounds like you're approaching this in the wrong way. Don't look at poker solely as a way to get famous. If you played in a PCA or WSOP event now you'd never win.

You want to focus on 1) improving your game and 2) moving up stakes online/live by playing a lot which will also help 1). As you get better and better and play higher and higher the number of people who know/respect you will increase, but you're approaching it from the wrong angle at the moment.

I'd rather earn $200k a year and no one have a clue who I was than $500k once but be ridiculously famous.

If you're after fame and recognition, being a great presenter, like Joe Stapleton or Ali Nejad, is probably much more approachable than consistently beating the best in the world.

I mean, the Isildur1 approach could work again... but you've gotta have near god-like poker intuition to be that guy.

There's always the "be famous for something else and also play poker" approach. It has only moderate results as far as "poker fame". Some actors who have done so: Jennifer Tilly, Matt Damon, Shannon Elizabeth, Tobey Maguire, James Woods, etc.

Then there's the "be a famous person's brother and also play poker". Matt Affleck seems to be working it.

I think you are misunderstanding my intentions. By no means is it to get famous although that would be great! I simply want to be moderately known so that my poker network could increase. Being in Florida, I would love to be able to get tips from a Harrison Gimbel or Jason Mercier. I understand that that may sound farfetched, but it would be an incredible asset to have their numbers in your contacts.

As for the PCA satellite question, I was simply asking because I am in the Bahama's quite a bit and would love to play in it if I were able to win a satellite and not shovel out 10k. I do, however, understand the unlikelyhood of me winning the PCA or even a satellite, but it's all just giving me more experience!

I would love to take on that approach as I make a little side cash, but currently I am on Bovado, which is anonymous... Are there any websites that are U.S. friendly, have a good reputation, and allow usernames to be displayed in game play?

FLyboy, keep increasing your bankroll. When you can quit school or can pay your bills by playing poker with some money left over at the end of the month, you will know you are on your way.

Many people outside of poker do not know 1 persons name who plays the game of poker. If I say an NFL player's name 99% of all girls will say they have never heard of RG3. I do not watch much TV, so when a person says oh, I love General Hospital, TMZ, etc., I do not relate with many tv show actors or actresses. I bring up Gilligans' Island or Hawaii Five-O and people get a blank look, like the word 8-track would give them. Gamers is another tough one for me to relate to. Read up on Imaginary Audience, also.

Good luck in all your endeavors. The things is you will be growing into you. You <21 and have a lot of miles to put on. In life as in poker, keep your mistakes cheap, and your wins big.

It takes 2 years to learn to talk, but a lifetime to learn when to shut up.

Perhaps I'm naive but I totally don't see where's the incredible asset in that. But I do know that being a member of FTR you are able to get tips from a number of excellent high-stakes players which, I believe, are at least as useful.

    Ah, that's cool then

In my opinion, the best way to do it is via the forum. Make friends and contacts through the FTR, and they'll introduce you to their contacts, and it spirals out through there.

My experience was similar - I knew very little about poker but signed up to a very small UK forum. Guy I got chatting with there came to visit me at uni, and I went on holiday with him for New Year with a couple of other guys. One of those was a high stakes MTT player, the other a mid/high stakes player who is now my backer and through them I met various other players.

Live events are a really good way to make friends too; the UK has a UK tour with £770 main events which are great for going drinking with people and making friends as a lot of people play the majority of events. I imagine you'll have a similar experience in FL if you can find young guys who regularly play these events.

My biggest tip would be don't treat pros as celebrities, just treat them as normal guys. From my experience, if you just want to go drinking etc and talk about stuff like sports and life rather than spending all your time telling them how great they are and asking them for poker advice, you're way more likely to fit in to the social group.

Hope you get something out of this post, it might just be a ton of ramblings
