Spoony, this stuff is classic. I don't know how I missed the spreadsheet series. This is such a fundamental necessity for poker players (and all gamblers / risk takers) to understand. Understanding EV calculations is one of the early steps of a casual player turning into a professional.

It's nice to see that there's a tutorial for beginners to create their own spreadsheet and then plug and play with bet-sizes and equities to see how it affects their earnings.

When you can do the EV calcs yourself, then you don't have to make guesses about whether or not you were "unlucky" or you made a bad play.
You can avoid learning "bad lessons" by thinking that just because you lost the hand, it was a losing bet.

Learning to know when a loss does not indicate a leak in your play is worth madmojo anti-tilt equity at the tables.

Working my way through this findin it hard to get my head around lol does it just click after while ?

Can you explain the first example - the one with a 6-sided die?
Can you work out the EV of that game if we change the payout to $9, instead of $10?

IMO, the best series of articles written for the beginner on EV etc...I post this link on other sites...makes it all seem so simple..

I'd really appreciate it if you guys would give ideas for more things I could cover on this or if something wasn't clear. I'm going to expand on this as much as needed to make it as accessible as possible.

Sorry man haven't been on this for a week or two, I am going to re-read the article later once I am out of work and will post up what I am not sure about, but from memory I think it was even the simple die example. I will post the $9 calculation in here later when I get home and if i am right I will change the payout a few times and practice that first before I move onto the rest of the article. Thanks!

Just did the calculation in work here I have

Total EV = (1/6 * $9) + ( 5/6 * -$1.50)

Total EV = $1.50 + (-$1.25)

Total EV = $0.25

Correct?



Just on the second tutorial now that I understand the first and you mention that the villain will fold 35% of the time, is this just a guess on how much villain will fold/not fold? Or an example just for the problem. Just curious as to how you would find the % of the villain folding or not or would this be an educated guess based on reads at a real table?

It's just an example in that instance.

However, you can estimate your Villain's fold percentage by figuring out his range and then figuring out which hands he will fold. Use this hand combinations tutorial in the process.
