Made player make huge lay down for win
This might not have been the best play, but it came out with the desired result. Both the villain and I made mistakes and it ultimately worked out in my favor. I put the villain on the wrong range of hands and he put me on the wrong range. If we both could have seen each other's hole cards (Sklansky's theory of poker) this would have gone so much more differently; but here it is:
Playing at the $1/$2 table, hero is in BB and there is a $4 straddle with a full ring of 10 players. 2 players limp in to the hijack who is short stacked and moves all in with $35. Cutoff calls, BTN folds, SB folds.
Hero reraises with J-J to $75 to isolate the all in hijack for heads up making it look like pocket kings or aces in the hole. UTG Straddle folds. However the CO calls.
$201 in the pot.
Flop comes A-7-8 rainbow
Hero makes a cbet of $75, called by villain. $351 in the pot.
Turn comes 9. Hero checks, villain checks.
River comes 9. Hero shoves all in $365. After a lot of hair pulling and deliberating, villain puts hero on aces full and folds. Villain had 6-10 for the gut shot straight made on the turn.
Jacks and 9s beat hijack's hand and hero rakes in $351.
Now there's a whole lot of improvement for everyone on this hand all around. My intention with the preflop raise was to isolate. It had the unexpected effect of narrowing my range in the villains eyes. But I also wouldn't have put 6-10 off suit in the range of calling hands of the villain for that raise. If the villain came over the top on the flop cbet or bet on the turn, I probably would have folded putting villain on A-10+, Q-Q, or K-K. But with the check on the turn I was fairly confident the villain did not have an Ace.
Anyway, it was a good win, played poorly that worked out in my favor. Another lesson put in the bag of experience.
