yeah probably because some people want the government to regulate every aspect of our lives. but im not sure how much the idea of it being introduced now has much to do with it, because smoking weed as been around for a very long time as well, and its still illegal. idk, i guess the puritans were smoking cigs at the time?
tobacco lobby is huge, governments make tonnes of money from tobacco industry, and loads of people are very addicted to it, that is why it is still legal. I am assuming that warpe is stating that if cigarettes were to come out as a new product today, they would not pass mustard and would be deemed too dangerous to be legal. the same has been said of gasoline as a fuel source. If it weren't already in use, it would be deemed too dangerous to allow.
as for pot, there are a lot of reasons that isn't going to be legalized any time soon, many of them related to the US which blocks canada from legalizing (or decriminalizing) it. others relate to the difficulties that would be faced with regulating it's growth, and the related matter of who is going to profit from it if it's so easy to grow yourself? if noone will profit, then who is going to lobby for it? the answer is potheads, and they are notoriously bad lobbyists
