Default Play Wazzup (AI) on FTR!

    {Edit by Eric: We changed Wazzup's name to GlassJoeBot on April 7, 2014}

We launched the beta version of our single player bot/ai mode, called Wazzup.

To play him, just go to http://www.flopturnriver.com/chinese-poker/ as you normally would and click on "Play Wazzup".

Has anyone played him yet? Anyone have any feedback or comments?

Of course, as this is version 1.0, he isn't the most intelligent opponent, but we're slowly improving him.

I played him today. He should have set 4 to a flush in back on one hand. I'm sure he'll get better with each version.

I've played about 40 hands with Wazzup. He fouled in exactly 20 of them.

I've seen him avoid 4-flushes. He pairs the top w/ 2's and 3's pretty aggressively, too.
  4. #4
Yeah he also set QJ444 in the back for me.
  5. #5
Really enjoyed playing Wazzup - thanks a lot for developing.

Wazzup was making similarly strange plays for me as mentioned above. Wazzup fouled 11/30 for instance and made a couple of weird sets imo:

    - Bottom row: Kc Qc 8c 8d 10s
    - four flush set top row 9d and bottom row JQ8ddd8x - Wazzup seems to like pairing 8s at the bottom
  6. #6
I always figured you would just be better off playing yourself than a bot. Twice as many moves, still just as challenging.

Wazzup managed to hit FL against me and crashed before he could set his hand. Working on that bug.
  8. #8
Cool, thanks for making the AI

I also got to FL, and it crashed on 9th street.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.
  9. #9
^^ We just fixed that bug. He shouldn't crash anymore when either person is in FL.
  10. #10
Had Wazzup set a very goofy 55TJQ/x/x on me just now

I'm thinking he should have set the queen in front.

I think this hand is too weak to go for FL.
If I was going to go for FL with this hand, I'd place it:
    Q _ _
    A A _ _ _
    9 2 _ _ _

That makes the mid strong enough to hold w/o improving. However, I don't like leaving the 92 on the bottom... but maybe it's not really as much of a long shot to make 2 pair as I assume.

I haven't done any equity calculations on how 2-card hands develop.

Wazzup incorrectly set trips in front against me again today. He should never set trips in front.

If I needed to get to FL with this hand, I would set it 92/AA/Q. But I agree, I wouldn't try to go for FL if I didn't have to

Wazzup still does some goofy things, like this a few times to me. Putting a small pair on the bottom making him insta-foul, rather than continuing to go for his live gutshot draw. I had JJJ on the bottom when he placed that 5h on the bottom.

Should Wazzup have played this differently?

I don't think he should have put the 3 in front on 6th street.

It looks like Wazzup 1.0 might not look at the cards shown by his opponent. On this hand he set the last two deuces in the deck in back.

With the 7 and 4 both reduced to only 2 outs each, I agree with the set.

6th The Q in the mid since the K's have it covered and it's fully live
7th The A in the top since I'd rather be drawing 2 to trips or better than capping the bottom to trips. Choosing between the mid and top, I choose top, since if it pairs and the bottom doesn't improve, I foul, and if it doesn't pair, it doesn't help in the mid. So, up top, I don't want it to pair, but A-high is OK for a top hand.
8th The 2 in the mid since it's fully live, and the mid needs to pair.
9th The Q to the mid to make a pair.
10th The 3 up top to prevent a forced pair of A's
11th The T on the bottom to make 2 pair
12th The 8 in the mid to maximize chances at a full house
    13th A on the bottom

Wazzup isn't complex enough yet to know what the other player has. So I don't think he takes dead cards into consideration yet.

Wazzup had fantasy land and fouled... looks like he just sorted the cards by rank.

Also, he got to continue fantasy land after he fouled. Again, played the sorted cards.

Yeah, that was clearly a mistake. It left him with only 3 outs on 1 draw to avoid foul.

This hand is amazing and it plays itself.

If the final 2 cards come in different order, there's no way you can make this.
  34. #34
wazzup doesn't think about FL yet, so that's why he doesn't think about putting Ks or Qs up top.

i also don't think he looks for 3 flushes yet either.

yeah, we're going to work on wazzup so he detects and correctly sets 3 flushes, and starts playing for FL. this is when it starts getting more complex, so please let us know if you notice anything funky.
  40. #40
some updates: Wazzup should no longer foul in FL (or stay there when he shouldn't) and he shouldn't f himself in unnecessary spots, such as trips up top, leaving himself with only a few outs when he doesn't have to, etc.

Wazzup should not have closed the back on 7th street with a pair of deuces. This meant he would either have a really weak hand or he would foul.

This is similar to that hand where he broke up kings. I don't like him breaking up queens to set 3 to a flush (especially with you showing 2 clubs).
  52. #52
I don't mind the breaking up of the pair in the queens hand.

But in both hands, he set the 3 flush in the back, drew more of that suit and placed NONE of them on the bottom for the flush ?!

Yeah, setting the K in back on 6th made no sense for him - if he sets 3 to a flush in back then he should give it a chance to get there.

yeah that set is really bad. i agree with your that K/A/543 is best here. it looks like he is ranking gut shot draws on the bottom over 3 or 4 flushes, which isn't good.

I would like the set by Wazzup if he was OOP. However, IP, there's less value in the pair of 6's once they're blocked from quads, and 9's up is marginally weak on the bottom. I don't hate conservatively setting X/66/9TQ in regular OFC, but I think the best would be Q/66/T9 for pineapple, or even an aggressive set in regular OFC.

    As played on the set:
The play on 6th street is poor, because Wazzup played an 8 in the mid and discarded a 7. Since GMML already set 2 8's there's value in discarding the 8. First, Wazzup avoids play a card in the mid, a pair-based hand, that is already twice blocked, and second, discarding the 8 means that GMML has 1 fewer out to his bottom hand than he knows about.

There's no value in adding straight draws to the mid, since any 9's will be played to the bottom.

On 6th, I'd play the A7 in the middle. It's too early to block the bottom from a boat.

On 7th, I'd play Q up top and T in the mid, discarding the 7.

On 8th, the T goes in the mid, making trips to protect the Q's, and the 9 goes to the bottom, NOT protecting the mid... but with a draw.

On 9th, I'd play a K up top and a K on the bottom. The 2 pair on the bottom can not protect the mid, and I'd foul.

My guess is that there are basically different AI's needed to play for a flush/straight than to play for a pair-based hands. Wazzup is getting better at playing pair-based hands, but has trouble trying to play flush-based hands.

If he just ignored FL and played for a flush, it could have gone like this:
    Wazzup

set: 4-flush on bottom, T in the mid
    6th -> 7 up top, since it's blocked
    7th -> 2 in mid, since it's not
8th -> on bottom to complete the flush
9th -> 7 in the mid, since it's unprotected to pair the top, and don't want to lose flush royalties
10th -> T in the mid to make a pair
11th -> 4 up top to keep mid open to improve
12th -> J up top to keep mid open
    13th -> Q in the mid

He shouldn't have placed the Th on top on 11th street with a freeroll to FL on the last two streets. It should have gone in the middle to keep the FL Queen draw live and the boat draw live on the bottom.

Looks like a typical drunk WAZZUP play. The AI doesn't really handle flushes too well right now. It's capable of setting a FD, but spazzes out when playing the rest of the game... it's a work in progress.

Yeah, Wazzup chooses from 7 8 Q for his 6th and 7th cards. We should change his logic so that the 8 goes in the back for 4 to a flush next time.

Otherwise it makes no sense to set 3 card flushes. If one of our first 3 cards after the initial 5 card set helps us with our flush and we don't set it that way then why set 3 to a flush to begin with?

Should Wazzup have played this differently?

7th street he should have put the ace in the middle and the Js at the bottom to keep the flush draw live.

lol, you're right - he should have put the A and the J in the opposite spots on 7th. No wonder it's so easy to beat him.

    blkglk23,

I think Wazzup should have put the A in the front instead of the back on 9th street.
