Default FTR HU POFC Master League

OK, guys, this is happening. It's gonna be big; it's gonna be huge.

    FTR HU POFC Master League!

Here's how Pineapple Open Face Chinese Poker (POFC) works:
Each player is dealt and plays their first 5 cards, just like regular OFC.
In Pineapple, on the draw, each player draws 3 cards, then plays only 2 of those cards and discards 1.
If you're unfamiliar, I recommend you try out the game by practicing against FTR's computer player, WAZZUP, just to get a feel for the game.

The games will be played here: http://www.flopturnriver.com/open-face-chinese-poker/
(You must be logged into the forum to participate.)

We will have a round robin stage first. The results of the round robin will seed the 2nd stage, a ladder event. Not only that, but the 1st and 2nd place winners from the round robin stage will win prizes!

There is no buy-in, the following prizes will be awarded for the Round Robin:

    1st Place:a $25 Gift Card & an FTR hat
    2nd Place:an FTR hat

Additional prizes will be announced for the ladder event.

    *** Round Robin Rules***
    • In the round robin stage, every player will play heads-up (HU) matches against every other player.
    • We will have a player clock of 2:00.
    • Matches will consist of 35 rounds.
If someone qualifies for FL on the final hand, then they get to play the FL hand. This could string out for as long as needed until there is a hand with neither player in FL.
    • The scores will be tracked and summed throughout the stage.
    • If someone fails to show for a match, and hasn't made contact with myself or their opponent, then both players will be awarded 0 points, and the no-show will be DQ's from the round robin.
    • When the stage is finished, each player will be ranked according to their combined score from all matches.
    • The 1st and 2nd place prizes will be awarded, and the rankings will carry over to start the ladder event.

    ***Ladder Event Rules***
The ladder stage is the heart of this tournament, and will start AFTER the round robin is complete.

Here's an overview of the rules for the ladder event:
    • In the ladder event, players are ranked #1, #2, #3, etc. Matches occur when one player challenges another. Scores are not carried over from match to match.
    • Each player will be ranked (according to the final standings from the RR).
    • At any time, you may challenge either of the players ranked one or two places above you, by BOTH A) posting here, AND B) sending a PM to that player (not either/or).
    • No one may play against the same person twice in a row.
    • The event will have 2 periods per week, one 4-day (Sunday thru Wednesday) and one 3-day (Thursday thru Saturday). Once a challenge has been made, the match is expected to happen during the following period. If both players agree to have the match earlier, that's fine.
E.g., if player A challenges player B on Monday, then players A and B must complete their match before the end of the next period, which is Friday.
    • If a challenged player is unable to play during that time, or if the challenger receives no reply within that time, then the challenger wins by forfeit.
    • A challenged player will not be required to play more than one match per period. If a second challenge occurs within the same period, the challenged player may postpone the challenge until the next period, if they wish.
    • If a player issues a challenge and then is challenged from below before the first match takes place, the second challenge is held in abeyance until the first match is resolved.
E.g., suppose player #4 has challenged #3, but then receives a challenge from player #6. If #4 beats #3, the challenge from #6 is no longer valid. However, if #4 loses to #3, the challenge from #6 becomes valid, and should be played in the appropriate time period.
    • New players may join the ladder at any time, entering at the bottom of the ladder.

The ladder event will last for many weeks (to be decided).

    ***
Registration for the Round Robin is open until Saturday, March 8. Matches will begin on Sunday, March 9.

*note: The dropouts have left the RR schedule a bit odd. Even after my best efforts, there are 2 final rounds with only a handful of matches in them. In the interest of action, I have posted the final 2 rounds early. If these matches are completed ahead of schedule, then this will prevent a lot of extra byes on the final 2 rounds. You have many weeks to get these games in. These are not regularly scheduled matches, and there is no pressure to complete them this week.

THE FOLLOWING MATCHES CAN BE PLAYED AT ANY TIME:

    :/

This is too small. Anybody want to invite their friends? Sadly, I have no friends to invite.

Eric knows all of the guys in the SAC league that uses this site. I guess I could ask him to spread the word.

    I'm in.

Also, I posted about this in the SAC league thread so hopefully some of those players will sign up.

What if we have ads for this league when people are playing against Wazzup and each other? Maybe between hands or something? I think that's the best way to get the word out because we have a lot of players that won't see forum threads like this unless we tell them about them while they're actually playing the game.

WARNING: a bit of a ramble here:

I played a game with a random stranger (a nice gent; I don't mean to imply anything else) who posted in the chat when I was trouncing WAZZUP. He didn't know I was a mod. He didn't even know FTR had a forum. He just knew about the OFC engine. I created a table to play some POFC, and I had to explain the rules of POFC to him.

So there's at least some traffic on the OFC game site that does not know that there is an FTR forum behind it all.

I guess this is a good thing, ultimately. It means FTR is getting new traffic from the new addition to the site, and that there is less cross-over than usual between-forum blending.

    ***
I'd like to see more people in the event, and if a little advertisement helps and is affordable, then I'm in favor.

    ***
I would like it if this event got up to at least the 16 entries that we had in a prior event. I'd really like to see it bloom even bigger, but there is an upper limit on how much time we want to spend in the round robin stage.
For an 8 player RR, there are 28 matches over 7 rounds.
For a 10 player RR, there are 45 matches over 8 rounds.
For a 12 player RR, there are 66 matches over 9 rounds.

The more players, the more happen simultaneously. There is always 1 fewer round than there are entrants. At 2 rounds per week, this has a major effect on the duration of the RR.

At the very least I think we should have the dealer tell people about this league in the chat box.

I don't want to start this with only 5 people. I was hoping for at least 8 to make in interesting... 5 is pretty small for a master league.

Is the name making people think they shouldn't sign up if they're merely a recreational player?

I am disappoint... but I made a promise. What do you who have signed up for the event want?

Should I allow more time for sign ups, or just hold the event at 5 entries?

I feel like the $25 first prize is a little big for a 5 person, no buy-in event... but that's not really for me to decide... and I certainly want to win it.

I'm happy to just go ahead and play, but I don't mind waiting if others want to. When I look at the current field, it seems very strong, so strong that I'd argue that luck will determine who wins. I think that all of us play so well that in a short round-robin series of 35-deal rounds, it's going to come down to who has the most luck making draws and picking up monsters in FL. Still, it will be fun to match up with 4 other good players, and we each have roughly a 20% chance of winning.

Is it too late to sign up? I'd be in for sure

So what do we do? My vote personally would be to go ahead and start it. Now that we have an even number of people, we would be able to have 3 games going at once, to start at least

    Let the games begin!

    All matches have been posted.

I don't have an option of setting up 35 round tables. I'll ask the programmer to help with this.
You can set up your own tables in the mean time.

I am scheduled to play against OneByPhi in round 1. The other match-ups are baudib vs Eric and gmml vs sam1FTR.

    Good luck everyone.

    A couple of clarification questions...

1.) How are the standings of the round robin going to be determined? Is it going to be from head-to-head record, or total cumulative score?

2.) What happens if somebody hits fantasyland in the 35th round? Do you keep playing out rounds until one person does not reach fantasyland? (I know when you play a heads-up match, you keep playing until there is no fantasyland, but I am curious as to if this changes if we are keeping the standings via a cumulative plus/minus total, rather than a W/L record.)

I'll let Mojo handle the rest, but on this one, I know the answer: keep going. One of my peeves with the way this site deals POFC is that it treats FL as a "new" hand--upping the hand count by one and moving the dealer button--but everywhere else I play it is treated as a continuation of the previous hand (i.e. the button does not move--and by extension, the hand counter should not increment by 1).

Yeah, the match doesn't end until neither player is in fl.
  19. #19
I should clarify that I think the reason for considering FL as a continuation is that it prevents a player in a cash game from quitting before the FL hand is played. In a tourney, this isn't an important consideration (except for the last-hand case you asked about), but it does make a difference regarding where the button is and how many hands get played. By incrementing the hand counter for FL hands, the FTR system has many fewer deals in a "30-round" (or in this tourney, 35-round) game than a system that counts FL hands as continuations and only increments the counter on deals when no player is in FL.

    1) Total Cumulative Score.

    2) You will always play another hand if that hand has someone in FL. If someone qualifies for a FL hand, then they get to play the FL hand. This could string out for as long as needed until there is a hand with neither player in FL.

I'm cool with whatever system is considered appropriate, but FTR's software works by passing the button every hand, so we're kind of stuck using that for this event.

We used a 2 minute timer - that is better than the 3:30 timer when we're playing 35 hands imo

We should let MeGrimlock join since the league is just starting. Should I get someone else to make it 8 or does it not matter if we have the odd number of 7?
  27. #27
If we can get an 8th, we should. otherwise, we can just play with 7, and one person can have a "bye week"

    just my opinion

When we announce the scores, it might be easier to announce it as "Eric beats Baudib by ##". I realize the game history is right there, but it might make it a little easier for whoever is keeping track of the standings to see it.

Edit:I figure that whoever is keeping track of the scores will have to validate the actual score by looking at the game history, so I suppose it doesn't matter either way

Since we're playing by point differential rather than W-L, I passed up on quads to make AA on top on hand 35.

Me and GMML were supposed to start playing at 7:15, I've been waiting for about 25 minutes and they haven't showed up yet...

I assume we are going to play this game at some point, but I wonder what would happen if there was a no-show, and 2 players weren't able to play a game? You kinda can't just give one person a forfeit win, as we're keeping score via the cumulative point totals.

Thanks, Eric. I did already check the scores, and the OP has been updated. I will update the image with scores once I hear what you want to do as far as late registration is concerned.

I can add megrimlock, but I do have to figure out who plays who in which round again. The re-shuffling of match ups is unavoidable and I will have to do it every time we add someone. So I'd like to only do it once.

Please keep me posted on the status of round 2, while we allow a few extra moments for late entry.

EDIT: With an odd number of players, then someone will get a 'bye' in each round. By the end everyone will have played everyone else once and gotten one bye.

    MMM,

Alex and I are working on a way of getting more people to join. We'll have the dealer tell people about the league in between hands.

What is the deadline for more players? In other words, when does round 2 start?

There's no pressing reason to start round 2 at any specific time, except to prevent the current players from becoming disinterested.

ANY CURRENT PLAYER WHO WANTS TO GET ROUND 2 STARTED RIGHT AWAY, PLEASE POST AS MUCH.

Otherwise, I'm going to assume that we're all eager, yet patient.

If it's not too late, and it won't mess up y'all's schedules, I would be willing to be the 8th. Just let me know what I have to do and whatnot.

GMML and I have tentatively scheduled to play tomorrow afternoon, but we can hold off if that would be better.

    You're in for 8.

DuckTollingGrinder and MeGrimlock can play their match for round 1. Remember that you can schedule and create your own table. Just play to 35 games and follow the guidelines in this thread for extra hands due to Fantasy Land.

When the match is over, please post the winner and score along with a link to the match review in this thread.

I'm still open for more to register.

Please do not play a tournament match for round 2 until I post the appropriate match-ups.

The addition of new players means I have to change the current schedule so that the round robin is still in order. I can allow for 1 or 2 matches to be played if the circumstances are extraordinary, but it makes my task a bit harder, and if too many people do it, then I have to add an extra round and give a lot of byes, so I don't want a run of people following the defunct tournament schedule.

You can play recreational games, of course.

Everyone ends up playing everyone in this RR part, right? I don't understand why adding more people causes re-shuffling. Are you saying the order in which we play each other matters? In the Sac league we all just played each other whenever.

The ladder stage is the heart of this tournament, and will start AFTER the round robin is complete.

    ...

The ladder event will last for many weeks (to be decided).

How about if we start the 2nd round in a few days but continue to keep the league open to newcomers after that? Maybe up through the first 3 rounds or something? All that means is that newcomers have to play their first 3 matches rather quickly to catch up, right?

Boxman444 & GratefulDead can go ahead and play their round 1 match at their convenience.

Remember to play a 35 round match and follow the rules for for extra games if someone is in FL. After your match is finished, post the winner and the score in this thread and include a link to your match review.

If you are unable to post a link, due to your low post count, then please give the table number when you post the winner. This way, we can all review how your match went and verify the score.

I thought in the SAC league that near the end, no one really knew what the structure was or how to complete the event. Some people had no more games to play and others still had a lot of games to finish. There was no way to track the scores as the event progressed, because everyone had played a different number of matches.

I want to have structured rounds, which have the same number of matches and byes (if any). I want everyone in the event to be in the same stage of the event at the same time.

I do not want to be filling in a round robin sheet like throwing darts at a board... I do not want an event with no timeline.

If you want that kind of event, I would prefer to have known before it started. I have no desire to change the rules and structure of an event once it's started. I feel like it's unfair to anyone who entered.

I very strongly feel that I do not want to have an unstructured event. If I leave registration open once round 2 starts, then there's no way to maintain the structure.

Of course, I'm not doing this for myself, but for FTR and the people who have registered for the event... I will defer to your ambitions.

It looks like the 3:30 timer makes more sense for regular OFC than POFC.

Eric and I agree that a 2:00 timer fits the game better.

I wont change the tournament rule once registration begins without a general consensus from the players.

As such, the timer can be set at 2:00 unless one of the players has a spotty internet connection, or requests the longer timer.

I am super-happy to play quickly, and I have no problem with a 2-minute timer. It gets pretty frustrating when people dawdle over plays, especially ones that are obvious or inconsequential. In the SAC league, one of the players used the whole 3.5 minute clock almost every hand, even on FL hands that looked bloody obvious when I reviewed the game summary and saw all 14 cards. This is probably a function of inexperience, but since this is billed as the "Master" league, I think we should assume that everyone is experienced enough to be able to make all of the decisions for a hand in 2 minutes.

+1, there is only 5 "decision-rounds" to be made (setting your hand, and then 4 sets after that). I think 2 min is good

In the future, maybe sending an email to forum members before the contest starts might help get a few more players.

    So you're in, then?

I can do PM's on FTR. If you'd like me to send you an email, contact me by PM and tell me your email address, and I'd be happy to send you a notice whenever I open an event for registration.

I have made some updates to the OP. I changed the time to 2:00. Anyone who needs the extra time to set it at 3:30 is allowed to do so. This should be arranged before the match starts.

eberetta1 play in the first round vs sshefri.

Please create your own table and post the results in this thread. Include a link to the match review in your post, please.

Here and now, man. You're in. Invite your friend.
Your round 1 match is against OhEfSEAbiscuit.

Please read the thread for tournament details.

We are in round 1 with an open late-registration period. Round 2 will begin when round 1 ends... which is when the late registration period is over and all the appropriate matches have been played.

It's not too late; registration is still open.

I have not added you to the list of players because I'm not sure you are interested in joining.

Please indicate your intention if you want to join.

Say something like "I'm in." or equivalent.

@MadMojoMonkey - the rules say 35 rounds, but the closest option is 30 rounds. Shall we play 30?

@eberetta1 - let me know a good time for you to play. I have created the table and the password is "klove"

Today or tomorrow works well for me. I'll check this thread each hour for the next couple hours to see if you are around and again tomorrow morning. I'm in cali

Just create a table with unlimited rounds, but play the appropriate amount. I think eberetta1 is familiar with the rules, but they're all in this thread.

Wfnm1 play against dawgboy in round 1. Use the same guidelines, please.

I now have the ability to create tournament tables with a 35 round limit. I will do so for everyone in round 2. This will automatically continue past the final hand if someone is in FL... unfortunately, it will also play extra hands if it's a tie game. In most tournaments, you don't want a match to end in a tie, but in a round robin, that's fine.

If a match has both players tied at 0 points on round 35 and no on is in FL, then the round robin scores 0 points each. If there was a round 36 because someone was in FL, which brought the score to a tie, then it's a tie.

The POFC tournament tables will not allow a match to end in a tie, so play out the final hand, but it doesn't count to the round robin points.

    Hell, whenever you can, man.

There is no time limit on round 1 matches at this moment. Once registration is closed, I will allow a couple of days for those matches to complete.

If someone registered but does not play in their round 1 match, they will be un-registered from the event.
