it s funny; it's not so much the big gross pots (set-over-set, flush-over-flush, AA losing to KK, top 2 always running into bottom set on drawy boards) that tilt me, it's the accumulation of small and midsized pots lost to absurdly bad opponents that have made playing so difficult to handle since starting back up.

tonight i played a 3rd session, calm cool and collected, ended up down a little less than a buyin. there was this guy, "Henrik76" who seemed bad and spewy and too laggy as soon as I sat next to him. I played 4 pots with him :

These little mid-sized pots don't seem like much, but it has been a constant avalanche of nauseating b.s. from the get go since starting back up. These pots are my bread and butter. Playing good hands vs bad, predictable players. The coolers and beats vs other regs even out in the long run, but when these players constantly take 50-100bb pots off of me, their money just gets throw around oh-so-quickly to other competent players.

if any one of these pots doesn t fuck me in the ass, I go from a small loss to a small win. if they all go my way (2 of them are mine about 65% of the time and all three go my way about half the time) I go from having yet another losing session to a decent win. there s just absofuckinglutely nothing i can do about it right now besides grind until the absurdity comes to an end.

    Not Giving In
Gl man I've been running like that since last August. I think I have had literally 1 month in the past 2 years that I ran above EV. I won't try to give you too much advice because I still tilt, but posting this stuff I think is much worse than just keeping it inside and overcoming it. I have 2 operation threads and I have yet to post in either for awhile now...because all I have to post are shitty hands.

    Rootin' for ya man
  14. #689
hmmm it s an interesting question : is it better (in terms of outcome at the tables) to "keep it inside and overcome it" or to do what I've been doing (spit out all the shit like this in a forum)?

for me, the purpose of creating a space like this one where I can spit out all of the things that tilt me is to just get everything outside. maybe it does more to create an aura of "losingness" and bad karma, i dunno. for me the single consideration that overrides any other is the small sense of satisfaction or relief i get from being able to write things down and whine to an imaginary community (a community that, luckily, doesn't have to read my b.s. if it doesn't want to). somehow, it helps me sleep a little better after a horrible session and also makes me feel like i have less pain and frustration following me around after leaving my poker "space".

regardless, i m gonna experiment with something beginning tomorrow until the end of may. i ll call it "Operation Break Even". my idea is to flip my approach to poker on its head. basically, i feel i have a huge huge hand-reading advantage vs the players i m competing with for expensive cheeseburgers (I think i once heard of a 100 euro cheeseburger sold at a fancy place in austria or somewhere). as a consequence, i push every thin edge i can find and deliberately get myself in spots that will likely put my opponent in uncomfortable territory (think 1/8 pot bets in pos in rr pots on A hi boards, min CR turns that bring an A/K, etc...). In the long run, i m confident i'm turning a huge profit by doing this, but "now" doesn t seem to have anything to do with the "long run". whenever I make what, for me, is a standard, quircky play, my opponents are calling and hitting 2-outers or running the top of their range into the top of my range every time.

this is obviously irrational and somewhat short-sighted thinking (yada yada, exploit every cent of EV) but I need some stability so for the next week or so, I'll try only "not losing". not making 15bbs/100, not crushing the games, not exploiting the weak regs, simply not losing money playing poker. think playing a juicy home game with your last 3 bi's. that will be my approach. play every hand as if i m on my last couple buyins and i need to pay for next month's rent. just don't get stacked. sure it ll mean foregoing fun hands like this one :

(villain was a 78/41 tilting whale who donked air and loved to rep scare cards... conversely, he would constantly check-call A hi to the river)

but, for the time being, i ll try to take the crack cocaine out of my game and sustain myself with a vegan diet of "don t fuck up the whole system trying to be a hero"

maybe this will fuck everything up (although it s hard to imagine something worse than dropping 21 buyins in 3k hands playing amazingly juicy tables, i m talking 5 or 6 handed with 1 or 2 decent regs, myself and 2-3 players whose money is basically dead) but i m gonna try it anyways, just to see how it feels and, more importantly, to see if i can control my thirst for action. it will be an excercise in discipline and boredom, but i have a feeling it's exactly what i need right now.

    Operation Break Even starts now.

    Starting tomorrow eh?

That kind of hand is something I fall for. Constantly though, they'll have that A on the river when I do it. I was playing a total maniac in plo last night (raise or reraise every hand preflop, bet/bet/bet postflop) and was crushing him while everyone else was donating to him, then fell for this trap. Lost about 300bb pot to him calling down with 2nd pair when I felt he was full of crap, and he was, he had bottom pair that hit trips on the river. In retrospect, even though I was right, I had such an advantage over him just waiting for good hands, I didnt need to mess around making thin calldowns. He took his 400bbs and left so I didnt get a chance to get it back.

Really though, a number of people recommend, especially at lower levels, taking some of the small +EV play out of your game to reduce variance in exchange for lower swings helping with your mental focus. Not only that, but if you're in a better mental state, you can start logging more hands for more overall profit, rather than quitting when things get too frustrating.

    GL!

Oh, on the post or not post thing. I think the occassional rant/whinge/whatever is fine and good to clear the head, when you find yourself starting to only bitch though it probably starts to become counter-productive.

In the first hand I had a solid read that villain would randomly 2 barrel terrible turn cards. However, the big question i'm asking myself is WHY THE FUCK WAS I UNABLE TO FOLLOW MY GAMEPLAY OF LOW VARIANCE POKER? I clearly have a problem. I was very very close to folding the flop since I didn't even have BD diamonds. In the 2nd hand I felt like villain would have less than top pair quite a bit and fold unimproved on the river... But who fucking cares? My objective wasn't to get people to fold hands, it was to play simple, straightforward poker and "NOT LOSE". What a fail. As for the rest of the session, I'm posting every hand above 50bb's that I lost :

I can't put into words how upset, angry and tilted I am. It's just inconceivable that I'm now down 25 buyins at these stakes in 3 days of play. I'll post another update after tonight's 2nd session.

    Must find fold button!!

I mean, some of those are fine and just coolers/beats, but way too many you're calling down way too light for your lower variance plan.
Just dipping my toes back in.
  19. #694
ya there were the two horrendous ones that sabotaged my session

plus, I should just be folding T9s in the hand where I called 3 barrels vs AT on the T8xx8 board (he s NOT THINKING ON THE LEVEL OF "OH MY GOD HE HAS A MISSED DRAW I BETZ")
when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?

Just finished session 2. Played fine except for 1 spot where I made an unnecessary 3 bet bluff on the turn vs a spewtard but besides that, can't complain. Just more of the fucking same. Felt too tilted to play after the hand where top set got cracked by the floated gutter-turned open ender on flush board-rivered deceptive 4 straight card. Fuck me.

Most frustrating part about today was the shape of the 2 sessions graphs. Just fuck me fuck me fuck me :

when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?
  21. #696
    tomorrow's goals :

3k hands spread across 3 sessions, 2 in morning 1 at night

still aiming for boring taggy "break-even" poker
when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?
  22. #697
Was too anxious to sleep, fired up session 1 earlier than expected.

    Some pretty grotesque stuff.

Vs 79/47. calling turn is meh but gotta fold riv :

Mini-session #2 is in the books. Made a tiny profit.

Here are the 5 biggest pots in the red.

What the fuck is with the 2 or 3 pairing on the river and somehow ppl having called with it making trips? It just blows my mind. Also, obviously KK is never good vs a 58/32 laggtard on a drawy board. Last hand was biggets pot of the day, posting a hand I won for a change. The A8 lead was vs a villain who never folds to leads but doesn t c bet a ton. I just don t see how that card hits the river. Unfuckingreal.

Fairly uneventful session this morning, made 2 buyins, made 1 huge bluff that, for once, I don't regret at all :

Villain has seen me CR shove A9s on A9xxx board for value (that time he timed down and called with 1 second left with bottom set). He's relatively solid for these stakes, thinking etc. Also, over a few hundred hands I have him 2 barreling an astonishing 83% of the time when called on the flop :

He called just when I thought he had no timebank left. Oh well, I really think this one was worth making. I suppose it helps that I still made a couple buyins.

Tonight's session was one of those sessions that felt like I was up a ton, then I looked at the end and saw I was actually down almost 3 buyins. Kind of surreal, but wtv, played really well, managed to win 32% of showdowns over 1.3k hands. I guess these 5 biggest losers explain how I lost the 3 buyins :

Last night's session was the most devastating I've ever had. In the groove, jacked up on a great cappuccino, started out running like shit then hit a nice patch where regs were giving me their money, the fish were plentiful, etc. Then I lost 8 buyins in the last 600 hands. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it did.

This hand frightens me. During the hand and after the hand I was 100% sure I had AJ and chopped vs the 65/24 whale this hand was played against. Then while reviewing the sessions it says I had KJs??? Very frightening, disturbing, unsettling, etc. Let's just say if I thought I had KJ i wouldn t be shoving river for value lol.

This blog has become the meeting place for depressing self-pity, not a graveyard for fun hands. After hundreds of thousands, probably little over a million, hands of beating low-to high-midstakes, this has become the place where I've met a run sparking a mixture of unspeakable frustration, impatience and disbelief that I didn't think possible. Maybe I'll send it into hibernation until things turn around.

this blog is just a cesspool of negativity. there are virtually no strat considerations in the games I'm playing, and all I do here is whine and rant and attention-whore for poor little run-bad-me.

shutting this down till June 10th.

I'm catching up on FTR and read the last two pages, sick hands. I'm curious though, I don't play in your games and don't even play on any Euro sites but do you feel you perhaps give other players a lack of credit? Like, you're clearly a good player, a good hand reader, you can obviously fold. Do you think you just don't give people enough credit? I dunno, just a random thought I had while reading the last couple of pages. What % of your style do you think is you doing what comes naturally vs being adjusted to the games?

    Gl gl gl.
  30. #705
ya dex it s very possible that i don't give people enough credit at the nl100 games i m playing

"not giving enough credit" is a strange way of putting it, since it basically means i think they should be and are bluffing when, in fact, they re not capable of it. so, in a strange way, it s like i m giving them "too much" credit for being thinking players. either way, nl100 is behind me. i m back playing nl200 vs the regs, whose hands i seem to be much better at reading since they are more likely to bluff at weakness. either way, like i said i m gonna hold off on updating until june 10th, the day a promo i m grinding for comes to an end.

the upswing has begun lol, fwiw I think I played particularly well towards the end of the promo I grinded. took a few days off (fri-sun) but back at it tomorrow. the most difficult period in the downswing was (is?) trying to overcome it through sheer effort. my life-happiness has been much better since I started devoting the first few hours of the day to grinding and nothing more :

i don t wanna get too greedy and worried about rakeback and bonuses etc, just wanna play good poker. prob gonna aim for something like 16k hands in the next 8 days. updates on the way.

just shipped 7k package to English Poker Open.

Finally, something good to use as momentum. I'll probably sell the package but if it's complicated or I don't find a buyer giving me a good price I'll just hop across the pond and hope for a big score.

    two questions for the Canadians:

    1. geni what did u do with the seat you won for that tourney?

    2. rav how did u do in the 1k WCOOP?

rav busted w 30bb s left reshoving JJ and bb woke up w QQ

i sold my seat for 3.3k usd, a little annoying but good to bank 33 bi's at nl100 for a freeroll

also, i had the same thing happen to me as rav tonight (he "accidentally" qualified for the 1k tourney when his satellite ended after the tourney had started) and ran T8s into TT on T84r... i was only playing the satellite for the T$ but was forced to grind out a few hours of donkamenting before the cooler. i was sooo close to folding with no read that villain who raised the flop was at all aggro. buuuuuuuut i had less than 100 bb s and who the fk know how ppl play JJ or QQ etc. bleh.

have been doing fine at nl100 and lowstakes donkaments until tonight (lost about 1k bleh)

gonna experiment with a little 4-day flurry of an operation where I'll just be 4-tabling on a site with slow software (so no volume really) and looking to play super lagg without a HUD, have fun and post some hands.

How do you get all-in so often?

Is it variance with a ton of hands like TT, and AK etc that gotta get all-in pre?

Are you playing lots of very big pots, for marginal value?

2 flush over flushes vs whales, KT ai on KT22 turn vs QJ 200 bb s deep, 56 raise flop, ai on 3452 turn vs 67, AJcc ai on AT3cc vs TT in blind war, top set and mid set AI in plo vs straight draws, flopped flush AI vs top set on KQ7 board, 3 barrel bluff shoved on T52KJ vs bottom set that flatted 2 streets on drawy board...

somehow this happens in 800 hands and i don t win a single one. not really playing high variance at all tbh.
