Default Operation Grindin' Back to $50NL and Beyond

Warning: I assume you're viewing this operation out of curiosity, interest, etc... so if you don't want to hear my story and why this operation thread exists, feel free to skip to the bottom of this thread.

It was a sad day on Wednesday, as I handed over a serious chunk of my bankroll to pay for an additional $9,000 in site work for our new house. It was a hard decision, but in the end, I feel it was the best decision, rather than go through the hassles of getting an additional loan, paying interest, etc.

For the past 10 months, online poker has been a part-time job, putting in a good 30 hours each week. I've been withdrawing at least $500-1K consistently each month and I have to admit, the extra money has been real helpful.

But with my new job, among other reasons, I simply will not be able to commit the time I need to partly rely on my poker earnings at this time in my life. But that doesn't translate into giving up poker. Not even close. Poker is my obsession, my passion, yet not an addiction. I will forever be a student of the game. This is just a minor setback in my long-term poker goals.

So where do I go from here? Eh, moving down in stakes, obviously. I'm coming from playing 4-6 tables of $50NL, with the occasional jump to $100NL at peak traffic times. Not the highest of stakes, I know, but I was a consistent winner at this level and the extra cash each month came in handy.

I am now making the move down $10NL and I figure this will require me to tighten up my game a bit, as I'm typically a loose player in cash games. Tournaments, however, I'm basically a nit - a serious tagg, so it's not like I don't have the discipline to play tight.

Anyway, below is a breakdown of my current bankroll as of today. I've left $500 for B&M/home games so I don't go dipping into my own personal savings each time I go play a live game. I've been playing a lot at Cake lately, so I decided to leave $250 there, which I bumped up a bit last night.

    B&M/Home Games: $500
    Cake: $272.94
    PokerStars: $5
    Bodog: $5

So what will I use this operation thread for?
I want to track my progress as I grind back up and beyond to where I was before. I will not touch on live play much, if it all, since this is mostly a forum for online poker. I may choose to write about certain sessions, what I did right and what I did wrong. I'm sure I'll post some hands that I hope y'all will pick apart. And I also hope to write about strategy, as in what I've been doing to make the most money (or losing it).

Hopefully, in the end, this operation will serve as both an inspiration to beginner's grinding a bankroll as well as a journal that has followed my progress back to where I want to be and more.

So without further ado (and if you're still reading, I salute you) I present:

Operation Grindin' Back to $50NL and Beyond
Disclaimer: operation name is not meant to be marketable, fancy, or exciting

I've grown tiresome of playing at PokerStars and Bodog as of late, so unless otherwise noted, all online progress will be through Cake/Sportsbook. I will play almost exclusively full-ring cash games, with an occasional MTT or SnG.

    Current Bankroll: $272.94

Level 1 (current): Grind at $10NL 'till bankroll is $625+ (25BI)
Level 2: Grind at $25NL 'till bankroll is $1250+ (25BI)
Level 3: Grind at $50NL 'till bankroll is $2500+ (25BI)

I invite anyone here on FTR to share in my pain, and my pride, of carrying out this operation. So please, feel free to drop in and read my session b/logs, and possibly call me out here and there. My bankroll will thank you for it.

    Let's go grindin'...

    Session #2
I played a real short session tonight, just around an hour and 20 minutes. I caught some good cards early on but felt I gambled a bit too much on some of those hands; however I did manage to pick up some nice pots so the gambling paid off, at least for this session. I couldn't get much going the remainder of the session. I had some decent starting hands but I was OOP too often on the flop and had to check/fold a lot and some I just didn't have a good read on the villain.

    Key Stats
    Hands Dealt: 228
Saw Flop: 52 (23%) <----- jeesh, and I was planning on playing "tight"
    Net Profit: $16.12
    BB/100: 70.7/100
PTBB/100: 35.05/100 <----- awesome, but not sustainable long-term, or is it...

    Current Bankroll: $289.06 (+16.12)

I'll be posting some hands here shortly...

So up until now, I've only played 4 sessions totaling 1042 hands. I need to find more time to play but that's life. I've seen some negative variance in the past 2 sessions, along with a few sketchy moves on my part. Regardless, I'm still earning 20BB/100 over the past 1K+ hands. However, this is such a small sample, so I'll wait 'till at least the next 9K hands to pass judgment.

Below is my 'trouble hand' of the past few sessions. Thought I played it well up until the river, where I made an absolute horrendous, spite call. I put him on the flush draw the whole freakin' time and still called... yes stupid, indeed. But if he's going to draw, I might as well make it unprofitable for him in the long run (except donkey calling when he hits).

Can't find the HH for some GD reason so here it is to the best of my memory...

Villain is EP ($15.00), limps in for $0.10
Hero is in MP ($14.00) with 44, calls $0.10
    SB folds, BB checks

    Flop: ($0.30 pot)
BB checks, Villain bets $0.10 ($0.40 pot), Hero raises to $0.50 ($0.90 pot), BB folds, Villain calls $0.50

    Turn: ($1.40 pot)
Villain checks, Hero bets $2.20, Villain calls

    River: ($5.80)
Villain bets $5.50, Hero calls <------

    Final Pot: $16.80

    Villain wins $16.80 with flush

Prolly should have pushed on the turn but hindsight is 20/20.

In other news, this $10NL shit is going to give me an aneurysm. Somehow these loose calling stations always end up on my left. Occasionally it's a good thing, but these past few sessions tend to prove otherwise. I've been getting good cards, but c-betting when I continuously miss the flop into these stations is freakin' pointless... so check/fold it is.

The players at Cake are really bad. No scratch that. They are AWFUL. Calling big raises with suited trash, connecting trash, face cards, etc. I only played 129 hands this afternoon because I couldn't find a decent table to save my life. Guess I just don't have the patience today so I logged off early.

It seems like so freakin' long ago since I've been down to $10NL. I'm still up though, so I really can't complain. It's just going to take a bit longer than I expected.

    Okay, end mini-rant.

    Current Bankroll: $263.38

So I've wandered back over to Stars to play some SNGs. I forgot how much more traffic they have than places like Cake/Sportsbook. And with more traffic comes more fish.

When I moved down from $100NL to $10NL at Cake, I figured I'd have to dumb down my play to the point where I'm an absolute rock. But these players down at these lower levels are trickier than one might think. I know, I know... ABC poker, I get it.

Thing is, I actually find $50NL and $100NL much easier, at least on Cake, than I do $10NL. IMO, it's easier to get a read and put villains on ranges at these higher levels. And because of this, I plan to write up a little rant about bankroll management for the micro limits here real soon.

Anyway, back to Stars to play some $3.30 SNGs.
