The other reason he might make it 3x instead of pushing is that he's worried about Hero waking up with a hand and (effectively) busting him in 3rd place. NO way can you put him on AA or KK exclusively here. I think calling is really really bad here, as drmcboy said, losing the hand to Ax which would have either folded or called as a dog or folding the best hand on the flop is a disaster.
I wasn't saying that I would just CC. I'm pushing here all day. I was playing devils advocate and trying to shed light on another some what probable scenario. I think its a case of risk VS reward. Best case is button calls your AI with Ax and misses. You now have a monster stack HU.
