Stone pretended to have a back channel to Wikileaks in an attempt to weasel his way into the Trump orbit, he lied to Congress and then attempted to browbeat Randy Credico into backing up his bullshit. He threatened Credico by fucking text message. Stone is a complete moron. But what Stone certainly was not was a link between Trump and Wikileaks. He was found in contempt because he made this claim when it was patently not true. If it was true, he wouldn't be facing prison.

He also posted a picture on instagram with the judge in his trial with a crosshairs photoshopped over her head.

I'd say calling him a moron is a bit off. He's more of a sociopath. Regardless, he should go to jail for lying to congress, witness tampering and trying to intimidate the judge in his own trial, just like anyone else would have to. (I mean, except Trump of course. Daily updates from the Assange extradition hearing. Quite a sobering read to those of us who cling on to the idea that our democratic values are alive and well. This is about so much more than the fate of one man. This is a demonstration of the power of the state, and of our willingness to abandon all morality to do what USA demands. The only source of optimism for me is that we're being deliberately blatant about it in court to appear to be submissive to USA policy, while giving him a mistrial. I'm not. I'm more sympathetic to the idea that governments are subject to law. We've fought a civil war to rid ourselves of a dictatoral system of governance. You can't just have the government torturing people who dare to hold it to account, and it's shocking that any reasonable person can argue otherwise.

If exposing corruption endangers people, the blame lies with the corrupt. It's a case of "don't shoot the messenger".

Besides, Assange took a great deal of care. The MSM might not tell you this, but Wikileaks were not the first people to release unredacted files with the names of informants. When it became clear to Assange that there was a problem in this regard, the first thing he did was to contact American officials to warn them. The Americans know this, they actively helped him try to arrange security for those at risk. My point is to highlight the awkward reality that is government secret keeping. Governments must keep secrets, even from their own citizens. A government whose secret keeping apparatus goes unchecked is bound to abuse its powers. Yet a government who does not vociferously guard its ability to keep secrets will find itself unable to keep secrets.

I'm not defending any specific actions, I'm just saying I'm sympathetic to the position the people with these tasks find themselves. It's a razors edge balancing act. Further it could be that the correct balancing point is actually one in which there's enough latitude for the government that some abuses will get covered up. You can see a similar phenomenon in any system of justice-- a justice system in which no criminals go free is a system in which an intolerable amount of innocent people are jailed.

Of course I agree with this. But those secrets should not be to protect it from electorial scrutiny by its own people. The people have a right to know what they're voting for. If governments are fighting wars without regard for the rules of war, if governments are torturing their enemies, these are not the kind of secrets that should be kept.

Of course there's a balancing act. People like Assange play a crucial role in this. If there are people like him who have the ability to obtain and publish state secrets, then governments have to be careful what they do. That's a good thing. Without people like Assange, the state can do what it likes. That isn't a good thing.

But like I said, this is more than the fate of one man, this is an attack on honest journalism. If Assange is defeated, which looks likely, then the free press is dead. That's a terrible outcome and strengthens secretive states. It's one step closer to an Orwellian future.

I live in an insulated life where I'm surrounded by mostly left wing viewpoints. I find it hard to stand behind anything the Reps have done w.r.t. not calling out Trump's total disregard for the American democratic process. I'm not sure about people. It kinda felt like a bit of a swing in the direction, though. Then there's the eye contact that says, "That was unexpected... let's not press our luck by continuing to talk about politics, now."
