I guess the way the media I read is covering Scotland suggests secession would be a momentary disaster for England. Granted, I haven't dug into it yet so I don't know and don't have much opinion
Basically
I suspect if anything it's an overblown fear. Decentralization scares everybody
I far as I can tell Mr salmond has based his whole campaign on that conundrum. Which is one of the many reasons my main response to the whole debate is fuck you!
He's effectively attempting to blackmail the UK government. I think we should try him for treason.
There is no pay gap.
I doubt it. I'm no economist, obviously, but London is and will remain the financial capital of the world. Scotland haven't got a currency yet, so their banks and other financial establishments will seriously consider moving south in the event of a yes vote. The pound will take a hit but it's a trusted currency and there's no way the world banks will let it go under. I think the financial consequences will be worse for scotland. But then again maybe I'm just gullible enough to believe whatever article I half arsed read. Truth is I don't really give a fuck. I'm all for democracy. Let the Jocks have their silly little vote. If they're stupid enough to go for it, well it'll be fun. There will be a lot of bickering, that's for sure.
But yeah, the standard shit. Pay is the same for people in the same jobs with the same education and the same experience and qualifications who work the same hours and do the same work.Quote:
One of the best studies on the wage gap was released in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Labor. It examined more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and concluded that the 23-cent wage gap "may be almost entirely the result of individual choices being made by both male and female workers." In the past, women's groups have ignored or explained away such findings.
Here's a good report on it if you people have time for those sort of things: http://www.consad.com/content/report...l%20Report.pdf
Very nice. This is probably more convincing than my reason. Always a fan of data, but personally am an even a bigger fan of theory. According to theory, a wage gap couldn't exist. This is because if it did exist, some businesses would capitalize and hire more women and fewer men. But we don't see that. Furthermore, if that happened, by decreasing supply of female labor and increasing its demand while increasing supply of male labor and decreasing demand, the pay gap would merge
So basically, even without data on the subject, a pay gap is an illusion. Unless, of course, there was regulation that made it so
Also I have come to the conclusion that the media does not understand data. Even good media, like Vox, misinterprets lots of data, partly because cherry-picked subsets are never comprehensive and partly because there is sometimes a lack of theoretical understanding of whatever topic is at hand
Yeah the idea that companies would just hire more women (and don't) is probably a more elegant approach and one that I have used myself from time to time. The only problem is that it requires that the people you're talking to are thinking people on some degree, and that isn't always the case. Then again, if they aren't thinking people, then I wonder why I'm even fucking trying half the time, but that's beside the point.
Edit: If you're a fan of Sowell then you can look on YouTube for some debates he had a few decades ago where he debated some woman on similar points. She didn't really have much to say after he demonstrated that white women make more than black men.
I'm so fucking beyond pissed right now. As some of you know, I've been helping this young girl out who has basically bailed on her piece of shit white trash clusterfuck of a family. She dropped a bomb on me today that this wreck she got in about 2 months ago was actually her fault and she's got a pile of points about to hit her insurance on top of a ticket that she's going to have to get paid, and there's absolutely no way she can get out of it because of the type of situation it is due to her being a female fucking teenage driver who doesn't listen to shit about not pulling out in front of fucking people. Normally I wouldn't give a fuck except that means I wasted approximately five hours of my fucking life between helping her plan out her finances, find sufficient work to pay her shit and try to get her insurance switched over to something that wasn't as expensive. So go ahead and flush that time down the fucking drain like the useless hunk of fucking dog shit it is.
Anyway there's my rant for today.
Bitch owes you a blow job.
Or because she's a 19 year old female who was raised by some real incompetent trailer trash idiots who never really taught her much of shit and for all intents and purposes didn't really raise her to begin with. Being a teenage girl is bad enough in the doing dumb shit department, but it's like a lot of shit she genuinely has no clue about.
She pisses me off so much because of the roller coaster ride of her doing really well with her big girl shit for several weeks before totally dropping the ball on something she seems to have no idea is a big deal. I think it gets me so much because she's very intelligent and I feel like she has a ton of potential, but we'll have to see where this ends up.
As much as I bitch about her, she's grown by leaps and bounds inside of a relatively short period of time, and her life could definitely be a pretty solid Lifetime movie. I see her being in pretty good shape after another six months of my tutelage.
Bookies offering 7/2 on a yes vote for independence. I'm surprised it's as a high a price. The papers have a very different view.
why the fuck did riot put fucking world championship in korea during korea times. speaking as the only time zone that matters this is a goddamn outrage.
Men are raped just as much as women and face other types of sexual coercion and abuse more often [from women]:

in general i think this man is the best pantie dropper of the 2000's overtaking john mayer.
edge of tomorrow is basically the best movie ever made
Completely forgot about that movie. So excited to get home and download it.
this whole page of the randomness thread is a 40 degree day.
Are you saying it's giving you chills?
I had a dream last night that I was a lonely cloud in the sky who happened upon a field of daisies bathing in the sun.
I rained on those daisies.
I woke up sick.
I need to get back into the studio.
TURN MY HEADPHONES UP
I took note of your untamed hyperbole and went ahead and watched Edge of Tomorrow. It is indeed very good. I cannot remember the last time I saw a blockbuster budgeted action/sci-fi movie which left absolutely no opening for a sequel or even a prequel. Glad I checked it out, and that's coming from someone who has a hard time watching Tom Cruise movies.
Tom cruise started well, for the first hour he wasn't Tom cruise, but then he was, which sucked a bit.
Tom Cruise pleasantly surprised me in Mission Impossible 4, ok on the flip about 4 of his other movies I tried to watch I turned off after 15 minutes cuz Tom Cruise sucks but I'll be checking this one out;
Consensual sexual contact of any kind between two people (even female-female) now deemed sexual assault at Ohio State. Literally.

We do not negotiate with terrorists.
You just gotta get creative and you can make that shit work.
Example:
I'm gonna stuck it in your ass now. Say it bitch.
What?
Tell me where it's gonna go.
In my ass.
Yeah bitch. Say it again!
In my ass!
Tell me you want it.
I want it.
Tell me you want it!
I want it!
Where? Where do you want it?!
In my ass!
Say it again!
In my ass!
What?
In my ass!
What? Louder!
In my ass! I want it on my ass!
You're welcome ftr.
Aw bless dan's cock fits in his girl's ass.
Mine doesn't.
I neither love nor hate Cruise. He feels forgettable even though he gives his roles what they deserve. One thing I think he excels at is movement. He understands the full-body intensity and focus of action, unlike most the rest of Hollywood (*cough* Rick Grimes *cough*). He uses positioning, spacing, mechanics, etc to make it look like he knows what he's doing. Here's a great example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiqwF_Y9S5Q
This doesn't look exactly like it would if he was a real-life gunslinger, but at least Cruise's interpretation of action is realistic. Most other actors are too limp, too indirect, and think the most important part of shooting people is facial expressions
Eh I just hate Cruise because of the Scientology crap and because he botched his marriage to the queen of the ice queens Nicole Kidman.
I suspect what makes Scientology appeal to him is the same stuff that makes scifi roles appeal to him. We need more actors like him, ones who are interested in interesting roles. Let's be honest, most actors are interested in generic, boring shit. Cruise has enough star power that his appreciation for scifi helps put the genre on the map
I liked Oblivion and I'm only slightly ashamed to admit it
What's the male equivalent of a feminist?
Since the definition of feminism is all about equality, the male equivalent is a theoretical term you would only need when referring to a matriarchal society. The actual term is masculism. Anyone who calls himself a masculist is most likely a misogynist. In the real world a man who advocates equal rights for men and women is also a feminist.
Spoon, I do not want to talk to you about this.
I like spoonism.
It is undeniably better to be a man. Who would even argue?
The dictionary definition does not apply to where third-wave feminism is now. Advocating for equal rights is no longer the same as being a feminist. Modern feminism (read: third-wave feminism as taught in universities and as observed in practice) is about the advancement of women, not achieving equality of the sexes. There's a reason we do not see feminists rallying to prevent male circumcision, the one-sidedness of family court or the huge number of males in prison compared to women, and that reason is that it's not about equality.
Undeniably?
Some of the disadvantages of being a male in the United States thanks to government statistics: the Selective Service, family court abuse, drastically larger suicide rates, drastically larger chances of being put in prison, less likely to obtain a college degree, more likely to suffer domestic violence, more likely to suffer other forms of domestic abuse, much harder to receive government assistance when you're in need through no fault of your own, restricted reproductive rights, limited advancements in birth control, more likely to be sexually assaulted as a child.
The two main disadvantages of being female used in these types of debates are the wage gap and rape statistics. The wage gap has been proven (over, and over, and over, and over again) to be a myth, and men have been shown to suffer rape at similar rapes as women (it's worth noting that there's a good CDC study out recently backing this up that's been making the rounds).
So I would say that undeniably is not a proper descriptor there.
I'm trying to figure out how.
Over half a century, western culture has changed so much that women have basically as much freedom of choice as men and the same kinds of things expected of them. Government policies go overboard and significantly favor women
Patriarchy != masculine favor. Our version of patriarchy arguably gives women greater access to health, happiness, and choice than it does to men
@spoon
Men are more likely to go to prison? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say men commit more crimes, especially violent crimes that are more likely to be rewarded with a spell in prison. I'd put this down to testosterone.
Suicide rates... well obviously more men decide to kill themselves than women... how is this an equality issue? Is it because women are dominant and therefore men are depressed? Obviously not. I'm gonna put this one down to testosterone too.
Family courts... it's the same here where the mother gets a lot more rights than the father. I actually don't have a problem with this... in cases where both the mother and father appear to have equally legitimate claims to custody, I would say that it is more appropriate for a child to stay with the mother rather than father. The mother carries the unborn child, the mother breat feeds, there is generally a stronger bond between child and mother than there is child and father. That's nature once again.
Less likely to get a degree... well fuck me woman are smarter than men on average, there's a turn up for the books. I doubt it has anything to do with sexism.
Men are more likely to suffer domestic violence? That would surprise me. Even then, I would say that male violence on women is generally more of a problem still, due to the difference in strength between a woman and a man. A man being attacked by a woman is going to be able to handle it better than the opposite.
I'm bored of rebutting your points. Some of them are legit, fair enough.
Bottom line is, equality doesn't work, because nature doesn't favour equality. Fuck equality.
Women bear children. That puts them at a huge disadvantage in the workplace. My sister has multiple phd's and works as a software engineer at a big company. She does have a high earning job, but will the company ever put her in a position where she is irreplaceable: probably not, because her uterus is a liability to the company. Women and men do earn the same wage in the same positions, but women will not get the same high ranking positions as easily. I have witnessed horrendous sexual harassment of female co-workers, never of men. I have had women try to beat me up, but guess what: I don't give a shit. I am a disgusting slob of a man, but for any woman to overpower me physically, it would take her some serious strength training and that's just because Y chromosomes are awesome.
Sexually you're always at the shit end as a woman. If contraception fails you can either kill a baby or worry about it for the rest of your life. I know guys who have unwanted children and all they know of it is a monthly check they have to write. I don't know any women who have had that luxury. I don't know why I would even have to argue this. There are some legal inequalities, but all of them start with the man sticking his dick in stupid. avoidable.
While I don't disagree with most of what you just had to say, it doesn't bode well for the notion that men just automatically have it better than women.
@bold, the number of degrees earned aren't a good measure of intelligence. Men have much higher rates in more difficult (and higher-paying) majors while women have much higher rates in degrees that are generally seen as borderline useless (and lower-paying).
On the top of intelligence regarding men and women, however, there are some very important differences that are really interesting. Men have a very slight advantage when it comes to mean IQ, for example, but female IQs are distributed much more closer to the mean. This creates a situation where there are a lot more men with IQs both higher than (for example) 125 and lower than (for example) 75. A lot of this comes down to the XX vs. XY thing (something similar happens with height distributions compared to the mean). Along these lines, men have a whole lot more gray matter than women while women have a lot more white matter than men. Men have very slightly larger brains by mass, on average.
Well I don't necessarily think men do have it better than women, but then again it depends what criteria one is using to determine which sex has it better. Men are generally seen to have it better because we're better paid, and usually considered the head of the family. Also, the idea of being penetrated by a large penis is something that makes me squirm, and subsequently makes me very glad to be a straight male. But I probably only think that purely because I'm a straight male. Still, penetrator seems better than penetratee.
As for intelligence, well yeah degrees is not really the best measure of intelligence. I could turn that table very quickly and point out that the vast majority of chess grandmasters are male. But chess is also an imperfect measure of intelligence. IQ is about the best we have, and it's interesting that men are edging that, while having a wider gap, which basically means we can be shown to be smarter or dumber than women, however one wishes to manipulate the numbers.
I don't think this is true. It's a sensible argument, but I do not think the idea that women don't get promotions because of their baby-having potential is accurate. If something like that was true, economic laws would reign and promoting women would create more profits
I've been sexually harassed about 10x more than I've seen of women co-workers. Men who get harassed typically are not allowed to consider it harassment, yet women are encouraged to express their feelings on the matter. I think a lot of the differences are cultural and the idea of equality isn't exactly relevant. For example, men are raised to believe and act like sexual approaches are good while women are raised to believe and act like they're bad. For just these reasons, even if men are sexually harassed more than women, it looks like they aren'tQuote:
I have witnessed horrendous sexual harassment of female co-workers, never of men.
I guess you're lucky. A whole bunch of men don't like getting physically or mentally abused, even if they "can take it"Quote:
I have had women try to beat me up, but guess what: I don't give a shit. I am a disgusting slob of a man, but for any woman to overpower me physically, it would take her some serious strength training and that's just because Y chromosomes are awesome.
I think this idea originated partly from the desire to absolve responsibility. Men can't get pregnant, we have no responsibility and hardly any reference frame to keep ourselves from getting pregnant. Women can get pregnant, they have the responsibility and the reference frame. What would we say if a man was moving furniture and took on a far too heavy load and crushed himself to death? We would say he was a dummy. But if we were thinking like pro-male feminists, we would say he wasn't responsible for his testosterone-infused mandom that provoked him to think he was stronger than he really was.Quote:

Women can avoid unwanted pregnancies. Back when our societies used to believe that, for the most part, women avoided unwanted pregnancies. But these days, we largely absolve women of this responsibility, and we have created an entire society that believes women are weak and have no control and we must punish men because of this. Women have a natural, extreme incentive to avoid unwanted pregnancies. It is folly for us to act otherwise and try to place blame of their decisions on others. Sadly, our society believes in such distorted pregnancy responsibilities that it seems to incentivize bad decisions by making women feel less capable
Most of this feminism stuff has nothing to do with empowering women. Most I see from it is weakening both sexes by victimizing women and blaming men. I think this speaks to a much broader and fundamental problem humans have when trying to solve problems of minorities. Increasing victimization only makes things worse
moving the feminism stuff to a new thread might not be a bad idea
It'll pass.
I'm glad to have helped to start this conversation. I'll be exiting stage right now.
