looked through bigred's snowboarding jacket thread got me thinking...
i have a LOT of jackets and coats. off the top of my head:
- 1 heavy coat for frigid temperatures, i.e. my old snowboarding coat
- 2 northfaces which i got as gifts, good all-purpose jackets. one is for fairly cold temps, other is more of a spring light jacket/wind breaker
- 1 garage jacket. for hanging out in my buddy's garage where we smoke cigars, burn propane heaters, etc.
- couple dress outerware things. in practice i rarely wear them.
- 1 old coat in car, in case someone else needs it or i get stranded or something. really should have 2 in there
probably a couple more
This reminds me.. I really should have some blankets or extra coats in my car in the winter. I guess I'm typically in pretty urban areas so it isn't an issue.. but the idea of getting stranded in the freezing cold and dieing of exposure sounds like a shitty way to go.

Went to High School with a chick very much like Munn. If only I had understood my inner pimp. She thought I was awesome in our drama class too and she used to watch me write poetry in English. Why is youth wasted on the young?

I really dig The Black Keys.
Never heard of them until a couple of months ago but that's some good sonic experience.

That's really hard. Just put their whole collection on shuffle, or just listen to one at a time.
this is pretty good mewsack.
I am trying to sell my car. I hate selling cars. Prob gonna end up accepting way less than I want just cuz I hate the process and just want it to be over with.
Did you finish the bike you were working on?
Well not finished, but I had been riding it all through the fall. Here are some pics I took when putting it away for winter.

What size motor is that?
325cc
Its small, but not terribly so. I know plenty of people that ride up to Milwaukee from Chicago on their cb350s for Rockerbox every year. I plan to make the ride this year. From what I hear, it can be a bit hairy on the highway, but w/e. Most modern sports bikes are overkill (not that I don't lust after them) in that you'd have no reason to leave 3rd gear on the highway unless you were breaking the speed limit by quite a bit.
Yeah, I actually hit 65 redlining 1st on my last CBR1000 and could easily bring the front wheel up in second without popping the clutch.
There is no practical reason to have that much power in a daily rider but sometimes you just gotta let your nuts swing a little.
If I ever move closer to the mountains I'll downgrade to a smaller bike, 600 or so.

I live in Addison
let's crash it Andy
Snow Day IV tomorrow, Blizzard should hit sometime around noon
yeah, this is our biggest in 50 years potentially, even though KC isn't going to get it as bad as they were once saying....they were predicting like 20 inches a couple days ago, 15 as of this morning, now it's down to 10. still, ten is a shitload of snow. Can't freaking wait.
have fun hanging out with the little dude!
I live in Allen, lets all say we are gonna crash it but then not show up!
Also, classes at UNT canceled and it's my bday tomorrow :)
little B is becoming more and more aware of his surroundings everyday, sleeping better at night, not fussing so much before bed, etc...such a great baby, can't wait until he starts running around, talking, he's able to play some catch, etc. it hasn't been easy, and would recommend NOT having kids until you're ready (I don't know if you're ever truly "ready" though!), but it's been pretty awesome.
and I still haven't posted a bunch of pics on facebook, so I'm sure you're happy about that! although I do need to post a few more soon, little guy has his daddy's appetite and is growing like a weed.
holy shit, george has a kid...
ya it's pouring here, when it freezes in a few hours things are going to get nasty
good thing I stocked up at the store today, Y2K style, don't have to leave my place for shit for 4 days.
I got a walgreens, subway, albertsons, mcdonalds and a few other places all about 50 yards across the street. Even if they shut everything down, I can walk over there in two min, so I'm good.
Looking forward to the Allen school delay/ cancellation coming across soon cuz that's what my work goes by.
If you guys hadn't heard, Canada's FCC the CRTC has approved Usage Based Billing for its internet providers who are now moving to place 25 GB monthly caps and subsequent per/GB overage charges starting in March. A hilarious failing pile of failured fail.
http://i.imgur.com/M3G7f.png
Good luck having this resolved, canucks.
Ha, that's an awesome breakdown of the ass fucking Canadians are getting.
I get that 25GB is a pretty low cap but I don't get why ppl are all crazy about usage based billing. Hydro, water, long distance, cell phone minutes and data are all usage based. Why should Internet access not be?
I mean, if somebody downloads 800GB of porn in a month why should I have to pay more for the network being augmented to handle that additional capacity when my monthly usage is like 2% of that? Let that lonely dude be the one to pay more.
I live in Canada, and I have not heard of this yet...I need to play less poker and read more news I guess??
I've always had usage based after my plans max hit. I upped my plan from 25gig to 60 gig when I hacked the Wii because a lot of the games are 4 gig each. So I just grab a couple a month. No biggie. Unless you are getting a movie library from scratch, 25-50 gig is sure to be enough.

Needless to say if I were in Canada I'd be furious. And btw, does the gov also mandate people to install bandwidth meters? Is everyone expected to know how to configure these? Do you like get an IM or some other instant notification the moment you step over the limit, or will you only see this when you get your bill at the end of the month?
Talk about killers of innovation! You guys can kiss netflix-type services goodbye. If you only go to like Ford.com and browse the F150 lineups, 1GB will be gone easily in under 2 hours.
(And fyi, less than half a percent of that graph was porn)
The capacity sum of strategically placed servers can be higher than the network backbone capacity… when 10 servers are moved to 10 edge locations, total capacity can be 10×10 Gbit/s. - Content delivery network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And according to this Netflix pays ~0.03/GB which has to be a wholesale price, so the assumption is that bandwidth can be provided at a cost >0.03/GB. - Detailing Netflix's Streaming Costs: Average Movie Costs Five Cents To Deliver | The Business Of Online Video
So the $2/GB overage charges are pretty heavy and even the heaviest users aren’t really taxing a well designed content delivery network.
Also, it salts a bit the very fertile grounds of the internet economy for e-businesses present and future.
That's the other thing - the $2/GB isn't factually correct. I can buy usage on a tiered basis (and the next tier doesn't cost $2/GB, it's cents/GB) and if I exceed my tier then it's $1/GB. I've been on this plan for almost a year, as has everyone on major carriers.
The change is that small ISPs are now going to be subject to the same rules as the major carriers.
Best I could find was Shaw changing to 100 GB/mo top-tier, $1/GB overage. All of what I said still applies but in a slighter magnitude.
edit It is a slash against competition if the smaller companies aren't allowed to offer unlimited usage plans. Which I don't think is ideal.
Benny, this isn't about the cost of any network upgrades nor has it ever been; that's just a fairy tale that gets repeated again and again and again until people would believe it to be gospel.
As they say, sub sole nihil novi est. Check this out:
Time Warner rationale for bandwidth caps doesn't add up
A choice bit:
Britt's rationale for the change—infrastructure is expensive—is tough to understand. Cable's physical plant has been in the ground for years; even hybrid fiber-coax systems have been widely deployed for some time. Internet access simply runs across the existing network, and one of cable's big advantages over DSL is that speeds can be upgraded cheaply by swapping in new DOCSIS headend gear, with DOCSIS 3.0 the current standard. Compared to what Verizon is doing with fiber and AT&T with its quasi-fiber U-Verse, cable Internet is a bargain (well, for the operators).
But perhaps consumers are insatiable bandwidth hounds who are simply overloading TWC's system—or perhaps not. The BusinessWeek article notes that only 14 percent of users in TWC's trial city of Beaumont, Texas even exceeded their caps at all. My own recent conversations with other major ISPs suggest that the average broadband user only pulls down 2-6GB of data per month as it is.
============
And if you guys got ADSL instead, it's even more bullshit since what one person does on a DSL network does not affect another. Nor on Fiber deployments. You might just have a tiny bit slower internet if everyone on your particular switch is downloading heavily at teh same time.
The only internet delivery technology where one user might affect its neighbor is cable.
So what is it that you do that burns through 100 gigs a day? That's like 80 blu ray movies?
More like 6~8 at 1080p, and 20 at 720P single layer. The average HD movie of proper quality is about 9 gigs.
Documentaries, tv shows and movies.
dvds are normally several gigs if its an iso(image of the disc as opposed to just the movie content itself)...
Since the internet is still so young compared to the others you mentioned, I'd like to think people can still do some good old fashioned voting with the wallets and give the capitalist environment a dose of socialism, or a gut check.
(I wrote a whole argument about how this was a direct result of capitalism {and how it gradually turns the dumb pipes from an indispensable utility to a pure-profit service} but then deleted it and posted a simpler answer, as this was and still is FTR. I'm happy that you know that it's capitalism at its finest, but don't understand how despite knowing it you will not rebel against against it and tell them to go buttfuck someone else)
wat
i side with dave lemon and by extension benny. Also how is "but I need more than my fair share of the internet without paying extra to steal hd movies" an acceptable argument
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7721/...wnloadacar.jpg
What I do with internet I pay for is obviously my business. Maybe I have downloaded every single linux distro and revision that there has ever been, just because I wanted to. Maybe I got a $8/mo netflix account to which I stream every single movie I want for the lol of it. Maybe I make it do this even when I'm not home, because I made it rain.
Now, if they only want to give me 25GB, 40GB or any other silly number of gigs a month to play with, then the internet should basically be free or ad supported, and simply block access to a significant number of sites. Get it? They pay for the internet, and then can decide what I can do with it or how long I can stay on it. You can't give me internet for years unmetered, and then decide all of a sudden that a hard cap is necessary which was completely arbitrarily chosen, and then start charging me out of the ass for when I reach said cap without even caring how I measure that I reached the cap or not.
For home connections, its simply bullshit. For mobile (read: smartphone) internet I can't say, as I'm not familiar in the matter.
But I'm not getting buttfucked. I don't ever hit my cap and can get 40GB more for only $5 if my needs ever change. I figure buttfucking users who used to download 20 times what I do for the same price is going to save me money in the long run, which is why I'm all for it.
You have to remember that this is Canada. We have a huge country with lots of remote places and the Government (CRTC) actually FORCES major telecom carriers to pay lots of cash to service pretty much everywhere. I'd have to expect it costs a lot more to upgrade a network here than in the more urban US and eventually, I'll have to pay for that shit plus the 100s of % markup that will be added on top. You might argue that current networks can handle more capacity than runs on them today...neither of us really know about that in Canada probably...but that's not the question. Telecoms will upgrade their network if usage continues to grow. That's what Telecoms do. If they didn't, Lucent would be out of business. And they'd do that quicker and more often given unlimited user downloads.
The free market will still play a part in stabilizing this. Eventually, download speed will get to a point where anything faster becomes nearly pointless. At that point, carriers will compete over download capacity instead of speed and we should see some growth there.
then paaay for itQuote:
What I do with internet I pay for is obviously my business.
No one owes me service, I pay for the services I get. I'm trying to come up with analogies to better explain my position but I can't and am too lazy to truly think about it at the moment. One of the reasons as to why I can't is because internet service is still unique, and truly one in which the service being offered is not finite in any way, shape or form. You can't "run out of bytes" or something, because the bytes themselves are not actually tangible. Instead, the telco can (and seemingly will) make you run out of bytes.
Plus, the free market can't really do anything meaningful about oligopolies which is what most telcos are.
With that said, if you like what you are getting, fine, enjoy it!
I'm going to ask the randomness thread probably the worst question that's ever been asked of it (but it's sciencey so let us gogogogo).
I left some vacuum sealed frozen bacon out in the room, went out, got drunk, and when I came back it was defrosted and at warm room temperature. The max it could've been thawed through at room temp is about 6 hours. Will it be good to eat if cooked crispy?
It's fuckin bacon, spend $3 and get some more, the possibility of eating some bad meat would not be worth it.
you better cook and eat that shit or baby jesus will be mad you wasted bacon.
people are pussies nowadays, don't be one of them. back in my day, our parents used to place frozen beef on the counter and then they'd go to work all day. when they came home it'd be "defrosted" and ready to cook. think about previous generations and the meat they ate, they lived.
6 hours, bacon, only doing this one time.......fuck, cook it extra crispy, but don't waste that bacon!
I'd cook some and eat it right then, after I know its been just 6 hours and it started out as frozen. But I would not put any uncooked bacon back in the fridge to eat in the future.
i'm just mildly perplexed that a pack of bacon went from frozen to room temperature after being out for 6 hours. i figured it would take longer.
but on second thought, that seems perfectly reasonable.
also, while jyms is the one that gave you the proper advice, heat kills germs-- go for it.
I wouldn't eat it, but I'm a nit. Seems okay to be nitty though cuz like jyms said, wtf it's $3 bacon.
we used to use our kitchen cabinet as our fridge when we were in the Peace Corps cuz we didn't own a fridge. 6 hr bacon is nuttin. The fact that you are drunk made this an even easier yes. Alcohol kills everything.
To hell with not eating that bacon. Standard.
This is a key point, Ash. Are you saying that 6 hrs before it was frozen? Or it was thawed and then sat there for 6 hrs?
If it was the latter, I wouldn't. If it was the former, standard. But this advice is probably too late. I'll assume that if you don't respond that you died a horrible gassy death.
Rest in peace, little fella.
no no no... the opposite is true. Cold does not kill bacteria, it just slows it. Bacterial growth is exponential. So we can see that if we allow a perishable item to sit out for several hours, the amount of bacteria will be relatively inert(assuming we are starting at near zero), however it has started. And because its growth is exponential, that kick start will have it going bad much much faster even under refrigeration or freezing. I am advising that if the bacon sat out for 6 hours and you wanted to eat some right then, eat some, but do not put the pack back in the fridge or freezer to save for later... by the time you get to it again, despite the refrigeration, will likely be bad.
There are certain foods that are HIGHLY perishable such as raw tuna, which if not kept on ice can quickly (and I mean less than an hour) cause scombroid poisoning. But bacon is not one of these; bacon is a cured meat, and depending on the cure it can actually be kept at room temp for extended periods of time (I would not suggest this.) After all this is likely why bacon was invented, to preserve a very rich fatty part of the pig.
A tip though.. to defrost sealed packages of meat faster, just put it in a bowl and run it under COLD water. Even though the water is cold, it is warmer than the product and since it is moving it defrosts the product rather quickly. Also the cold tap water is probably right around 40° so your product will actually never, or barely, enter the danger zone. This is why hot water should never be used, because parts of the product will constantly be held in the danger zone while it defrosts.

Looks like the cold is slowing more than just bacteria
I understand you're saying don't put it back in the fridge. I didn't suggest otherwise. Me asking "Are you saying that 6 hrs before it was frozen?" was intended to mean "Was it in a frozen state 6 hrs ago?"
What I'm saying is that, assuming the starting point is near zero bacteria, the bacon being frozen 6 hrs ago means a shorter time above 40 degrees than had the bacon been thawed and then sat on the counter for 6 hrs, meaning less time for bacteria to multiply. We're suggesting the same thing.
oh, I see, def misread your post. Carry on.
