i am unconvinced that any amount of drugs would make me want to dance
i would love to take classes and learn moves and compete and build relationships or whatever, but getting high and moshing...
im the guy in the booth, sipping whiskey, wondering why he got roped into going to some noisy fucking club
Bless. I remember once being this naive.Quote:

im guessing you're just doing x to get that high
because weed doesnt
Absolutely. but MDMA, not X.
And you don't need to mosh, although you can. But another option would be to be somewhere a little dark, too loud to talk, busy enough to not be noticed, and on the dance floor with a girl you like. Not hopping around all crazy, just touching each other and moving to the music.
This is my idea of dance music...
i was never really into dancing, even though i did some of it as shitty clubs when i was a teenager with my friends (get drunk --> dance how i think im supposed to dance to crappy top 40 set lists --> hate myself the next day and curse my entire existence), because i have crippling performance anxiety and am generally pretty awkward. last year i actually started to dance my ass off for the first time thanks to a combo of being around people i actually liked and felt comfortable with, listening to really good EDM and not lil wayne, and MDMA. MDMA was a very useful tool for releasing myself from my neurotic feedback loops, and i've been able to integrate the experience into my normal life. now i can easily dance with little self-consciousness whether i'm sober or not, which definitely has an effect on my overall self-image and confidence and anxiety and all that shit. letting your body be intuitively moved by the music is an incredible feeling, and way different than trying to dance and just being painfully aware of what you're doing the whole time. it would be obnoxious to claim that dancing is for everyone, but i think that it's very commonly the case that people are just insanely wound up and tense and not comfortable enough to let loose enough to just dance. physical forms of self-expression are painful for people who are terrified of what other people think.
I'm pretty sure she said what I said, just way better.
Or at the very least we're on the same page. Better friends, good music and mdma make dancing something amazing.
I'm pretty sure the Stooges are the best band ever.
And I second a change from being too uncomfortable to dance to being far more comfortable now, with good friends and mdma in the middle. I'd never really made that connection though. And I'm still far from a confident dancer. In fact I can make myself feel uncomfortable at the thought.
I think that's it for many people, but I feel like there's something more going on for others.
The culture I was raised in is just a couple steps removed from the Quakers. Think: Ohio, Protestant, farming or factory work, rural life. These people value propriety to a ridiculous extent. The liberal of the group is the type who thinks a jazz club and a cigar is a good time.
I know that I'm more guarded than I should be, but I'm unsure of what I would be like if fully guarded. I feel like I don't even like the idea of a dance floor even if I had no hangups.
audreymcfate is correct; skrillex is not the epitome of edm. I don't hate the guy, but it's not really my thing and it's sad that since he is the poster child of edm, so many people never check out Justice, Ratatat, Bonobo, etc, etc. I mean, maybe those aren't even EDM really, but better classified as electronica. Idk.. All I do know is that if I ever get to see Justice live in France, it will be the climatic moment of my life.
Also, while I've never done MDMA, and I believe you guys when you say it's what's up for taking in edm/electronica-- I have to say, mushrooms is where it's at.
Shrooms are fuckin great.
Do both at the same time. ;)
All the groups you listed are great, Boost. I never got too into Justice but I love Bonobo and Ratatat.
I've been careful to not bring electronica into the convo so as not to confuse things.
But if we're going talk about high level electronica:
Tipper. If you dk him check him out immediately. Dude is a grand master sound alchemist.
What the fuck is EDM?
Holy fuck, you found Tipper? That man understands bass.Quote:
Tipper. If you dk him check him out immediately. Dude is a grand master sound alchemist.
You'll also like Radioactive Man, and Si Begg. Same cup of tea.
there are two kinds of people: those who see "bass" and think "fish" and those who see "bass" and think "instrument".
Ok Audrey/Ong, I'll check him out.
I also love old school electronica/dj instrumental stuff... from Avalanches, to Fatboy Slim(seriously!), to The Prodigy to Daft Punk (ldo).
And while, wuf, I think you're is just expressing a contrarian view point, because you're that kind of dude, from what you've said, you should love a lot of electronica. Lyrics/vocals are rarely used as more than another type of sound, and these guys are just pushing the envelope of what can be done with music.
For real though, what the fuck is EDM?
Electronic dance music?
Yeah, electronic dance music. Not so much a genre as it is a really broad category.
Tipper is soooooo fucking good -- he is a prime example of what the electronic medium is capable of and should be striving for.
For some next level 90s trip hop, check out the song Hello Cleveland! by Mono. Whole album is fantastic but that song is something else.
all this talk of dancing has me thinking of the truest baller

Ong, I haven't listened to the last two links, but prior to that, I love every musical link you've made.
My music taste is somewhat better than my general posting quality.

rong, I'm worried you're showing the signs of early onset dementia. Poor volume control, broken sentences, inability to recognize the things you've said as being from you...
I love that show, most valuable bit of information I've taken from this site was to watch it.
hi-5-bro
lol
i love how 'edm' has become a label. Straight-faced use of that label is pretty much a good way to filter people out of grumpy-old-man days in my life ;) I remember hearing someone refer to edm for the first time and i had no idea what they were talking about. umbrella-terms and main-stream/normalising of the fringe is pretty standard - hell, it was the late-90s before i even made it to my first gathering on top of the hill and even then some bored and dis-illusioned types were all "this shit's been played bro", then it rained for three days and even the bored and dis-illusioned couldn't help but get involved in the mud-drug-music-mess that evolved. And, as you say, there are still some pretty edge festivals and scenes around the place.
fuck it, now i'm reminiscing about partying in the basements of old car-parking buildings and mocha-short-black-chaser and that short period that speed derivatives were available legally if you went to that one dodgy pharmacy and referenced your 'aerobics coach' and were ok signing your name on a list that 'might be made available to police'
edm is a really straightforward label, not sure what's wrong with it. i know plenty of older people who have been in the scene (or whatever you want to call it) for decades that use and don't mind the term. i normally just say "electronica" unless i'm specifically talking about dancing, in which case i find it useful for the distinction.
thanks for music recs, will let you know what i think when i have a clear head to check them out, ong:)
