Anyone here with kids send them to a private school? I'm considering sending my 3 year old to a private school as of January. She's only just turned 3 and already smarter than all the 4 year olds in her preschool and the teachers there said she can already do everything that they need to teach the kids there before they start full time primary school in two years time. Gonna cost me a fortune so would like to here anyone else's experience.
My wife went to a private school up until like grade 8 or 9 I think. She said from her experience the private school taught better discipline and it challenged them more. When she went to a public school in grade 8 (her parent allowed her to make this choice) the two big things she noticed was how the work they were given was way easier and that kids kids would disrespect the teacher with no consequences. The public schools in our town are not bad schools at all either, but they couldn't compare to the private schools.
Her parents also said another plus to a private school is the other parents tend to be more focused on their kids' education in general so the teachers and parents are all working on the same goal. You don't get parents who think of school as day care and couldn't give a shit about their kid's performance as long as they're not held back.
Once again, this was her experience, can't speak for private schools in general. We'll definitely be putting our kids in private school though.
If you know a good private school, it is better and worth it. Some are not good, but they're probably the minority and are that way for uniquely religious reasons. My niece went to one of those and they didn't teach her shit about shit except Jesus. She has since been behind public school standards
There are a ton of high-schoolers at my college. I have nothing good to say about the schools they're getting their information from. It almost seems that if you are taught by public education, being dumb is mandatory
My impression is that it's been shown over and over and over and over that preschool causes no improvement in anything whatsoever.
This ties in with my expectations. My initial concerns are whether or not it's worth it at such a young age or whether I should save my money and just consider it for high school. But at the same time, if I have a particularly bright child, am I wasting that potential by not grabbing every potential opportunity.
FWIW if you spend time with your child and attempt to teach them what you think you should, there is basically nothing they're going to learn from school.
Pre-school could help if the parents do not have the child interact much with others or engage in various activities.
We spend a lot of time with our kids and have basically structured our entire lives around them. Not to the detriment of ourselves, but we certainly aren't the kind to just switch on the TV. We had a relatively poor 5 years with the Mrs not working. So now the youngest is 3 we put her into preschool 3 days per week for 6 hours per day. She needs it and loves it. But the thought process is if we are sending her somewhere for that amount of time each week, should we spunk a fortune on a private education in an attempt to ensure she has the best possible future or is it just a waste of money that will have little overall effect.
I don't really know how to quantify the minimum desired effect to make it worthwhile, which makes the decision rather difficult. And that amount of money is a lot to me.
I doubt private preschool is any better than public. Parents who are wise with their money provide a lot of value to their kids. I wouldn't splurge that much on preschool unless the one my kid was in was awful.
The real issues in school arise when it becomes daycare for burgeoning adults.
What is the school offering that you aren't? Could you offer it for less than the price the school is asking?
Preschool is mostly about socialization, and exposure to things that you might not have thought of.
It's amazing how far you can break down math skills if you really want to. I gave math lessons to 3 year olds, but it amounted to "put 1 here and put 2 over there". Just getting the concept of 1 and 2 cemented is a big deal, but I never would have thought to teach it like that... and it worked. It's not the only thing that works, but there's something to be said for trusting a professional at their craft.
It's important to expose kids to as much as they can handle, but at the same time, it's not a race or a contest to make the best kid. There's nothing they need to learn but that unconditional love exists through their parents... the rest will follow in due time.
I think 4 hours or so at a school can be great for development, but not necessarily better than 4 hours at the neighbor's house, park, or mall.
If the school has nap time, you can't really call it school.
Only reason I'd send my kids to private school is to keep them away from the riff raff. I doubt there's a great deal of riff raff in Cornwall. I'm not sure what's to be gained from it. I'd be more inclined to pay for kids' uni rather than private school.
I went to an elite private school age 10-12, then we moved and I ended up in one of the bottom of the pile government learning facilities. I haven't kept in touch with any of my friends from the private school. 15 years later I get an invitation for a class reunion from a 27 year old looking 45 who was now a party member of the religious right. One of my old classmates went on to an executive position in germany. Got addicted to coke, went to rehab and eventually killed himself. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I am not bitter about my substandard education. I think there is a life lesson you learn in public schools that can be very valuable.
tl;dr
I do enjoy mingling with the proletariat.
The private school decision really depends on how bad the public schools are around you. The american public education system seems so bad that anyone with a bit of money snap ships their kids to a private school.
I know it does vary by area, not all the public schools are total shit etc, but c'mon yanks, get your shit together :x
Okay I put some more thought into this because I want to be sure to give the right advice.
10k pounds per year is way too much to pay for school when the other option is a non-terrible public school. That money will find far greater utility if put to investment instead. Additionally, the primary determinant of a student's success is parents. Not the school, not the teachers, but the parents. All other predictable factors are small in comparison. If you gave me two options: (1) 10k/yr for awesome private instruction or (2) decent public instruction, 10k/yr of investments, and parents who are engaged in the course outcomes of their kids' instruction, I'll choose option 2 every time and it's not even close
The primary problem of education is the system itself because it eschews application and adulthood for burgeoning adults who need application and integration into the adult world more than anything. This problem is virtually insurmountable, and everybody just has to bite the bullet and spend the first 20 years of their lives trying to not take to habit all the dysfunction this pounds into them. Private instruction and even homeschooling doesn't solve this. It's a cultural issue at its deepest, so bad that we even laugh at the idea of people who have hit puberty needing to be integrated into the system of adulthood instead of being told only abstractions and spending time with only others who are just as green at life as them.
As for the view of the traditional value of private instruction, it isn't that necessary to achieve mobility into upper class success anymore. Back when capitalism wasn't that big and aristocracies ruled, the sort of thing was much more important. But today, success, how it's defined by the culture of the system, comes from getting good marks in school (not so much which school or which classes, just any school and any classes), and ability to generate productivity in the workforce. Within this model, which very much exists today, the traditional value of private school prestige is greatly subdued. From an education perspective, good grades in any random degree path from a decent public institution is all that is needed to engage mobility into the upper class.
My advice is to take the sums you are considering putting into private instruction and investing it instead, and engaging in your child's course outcomes (making sure you know what they're doing, what the teachers want from them, they learn the material and do the work, and get the marks you want for them)
Tidbit: the way to know which class you're in these days is introductions at parties. If typically others introduce you and you have a title (like "this is so n so who is such in such at such n such place), then you're upper class and your mobility is mostly determined by productivity

The value of my education significantly jumped once I got into algebra in 8th grade and continued to pay dividends through AP classes til grade 12, and into my engineering classes through my Junior year. Then I had to take a bunch of worthless crap to satisfy the degree and it's been downhill since then.
I doubt early Kindergarten did me any good, though I do remember bits and pieces of it. But I would definitely angle to get them into the best later year schooling you can. And if this nonsense is the way it's done, do it.
Orwell wrote a paper about being over-worked and over-challenged when he was young because he was a prodigy and his school only brought him on to bank on the claim of another scholar going to XYZ top school, coming from their school. They kept his nose on the grind stone constantly. He was to the point where he intended to do no hard work for many years after he graduated.
There is definitely a line that can be crossed when it comes to challenging kids through schooling, but I suspect public schools way undershoot that mark.

what are the public infant/junior/senior schools like round you. went through the process last year with my daughter . local school in town is really good and there were local village schools to choose from as well.town school was out of area.....bummer .... but son goes there already so that got us up the priority list and hes near the top of his year so probably also helps with schools looking for good sats results further down the line. There was a new redrow development on the edge of local town , and the houses were sold before being built and moved into as soon as they were completed as it got owners into the catchment area for getting kids into the good infant school. 86 kids went after 50 places apparently. local town also has a grammar school ( i went there and its pretty top notch and nephew and neice go there) and two high schools(catholic decent one and one for the dropouts). that 8K per year may be better invested in getting into a good school catchment area throughout the kids education. We plumped for the town school as number 1 pick as it had a great reputation, plenty of kids so 2 classes per year compared to village schools which were typically two years per class. didn't think that was conducise to pushing the kids and they were abit wishy washy about pushing the kids. number of kids at the town school meant that they could be streamed and are being pushed. downside is that its on the edge of a council estate so all the dropouts go there as well but school is getting the results despite that.

Best thing I've seen this week.
It's funny 'cause it's true. Especially the part about needing a cluster of data points for a reliable reading.

I haven't been following any game releases at all, but this is reason enough to get me an XBOX ONE pronto! Holy shit!
This, GTA V, and NBA 2K15, and a huge LG 55" LCD. God damn, there has never been a better time to be a gamer. I'm not even mentioning Chrono Trigger on the iPhone.
And then we got #gamergate
am currently lvl 70 monk + 56 paragon on diablo 3. so yeah.
How fat and white am I, if I have a strong desire to sell my perfectly good 42" flat screen for something bigger?
I use my TV for watching Netflix while drunk (which doesn't happen as often as you might think... the watching part that is, the drunk thing happens a lot, clearly) and playing COD drunk with an old college buddy once ever 3 months, since d0zer never plays anymore and bikes on plays with xbox. :'-(
So everytime my work co-hosts an event, we offer to develop the HTML version of the invitation email, because apparently I'm the only person capable of such magic. Every time I send the draft to our sales guy, he says, "Looks good, can you create a Word version so I can send it to the client?"
I mean, yes I can, but why the fuck am I rendering my email in a Word document so that it can be attached in an email to people who are going to copy it into an email to send out by email?!?! In the past, it's just been easier to do as he asks than to rock the boat, but the absurdity of it finally got to me, and I was like, "They asked for an HTML version, and this is the HTML version. I can make a Word version from the HTML version so that they can recreate the HTML version I've already created, but it'd be easier for everyone involved to go email --> email --> email."
I didn't say it in exactly those words, but god damn.
I realize I just gave two different wordings of the same complaint, neither of which is the exact wording that I sent in the email to the sales guy, but I just keep finding new permutations of absurdity that niggle at me.
I think there's a good chance the UK is going to leave the eu. This scares me a little, and I blame them.
I'm sure this creates opportunity. I just don't know what it is.
The UK is going to be fucked in their crumpet-eating, cricket-playing, tea-sipping asses if they leave the EU.
Fuck the metric system, and fuck the queen.
God Bless America!
burlesque shoot today. gl me.
I need deets!
Obviously it depends on the details, but leaving the EU isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially for the UK since you're not in the monetary union. The EU as it is today is not sustainable, and it is arguably the main reason why Europe's economy has been so much worse than any other modern nations. Increased mobility and utility is a good part of the EU, but it is not a natural zone and the attempts to increase mobility (things like common currency) is wreaking havoc in the region
me...me...I.....I....Me...yay me!!!!
I was all about my crusader who could stand in any level of madness and not fall below 90% health, but now I'm stuck at lvl 28 greater rift with a character that doesn't do damage.
They definitely made the game easy to pick up, with a lot of avenues for improvement, and not nearly as pointlessly frustrating as it was before.
anyone see the google exec land after his record freefall.........you'd think he'd have done some practise landings before jumping from 25 miles up.

at around the 2:17 mark
I'm not sure I'd want to do practice landings in the $1M suit that's supposed to keep me alive in the stratosphere. In the event someone would point and laugh at you after you face plant, you can always go: 'Yeah! I just jumped from fucking SPACE! What did YOU just do?'
Watched life of pi last night, after avoiding it for ages the Mrs got her way. It's brilliant. Y'all should watch it.
I thought it was mediocre at best. But my bias against self important spiritual jibber jabber is probably coming into play here.
Go watch Chef now. It's great
I didn't even know what is about and didn't want to watch it. That possibly explains why I enjoyed it so much.
