Chicken and Waffles.
Also Icecream and waffles.
Refuse to get both if they come from a place similar to an IHop
Tacos, fish tacos...
the other other white meat
The only place I eat chicken and waffles is Roscoes but too far to drive. Really want that though.
Wife is currently making some sort of chicken for dinner. Smells good. Def some garlic in there. Just finished a cucumber, tomato and onion salad.
Re: Roscoes
That is the only place I had had chicken and waffles, and it's the name everyone drops, and I just was ok with being under the impression that it was the place to go. But on my way out of California, I ate at a place in SF that crushed Roscoes. And then it came to me-- there is almost surely a better chicken and waffles joint in LA as well.
Not helpful to you, but this is the best chicken and waffles evah

When is the answer to this question ever not bacon?
mmmmmmm this ain't happening in the UK - but as I run a chicken street food van I could be the first...
Sounds horrid to me, but im open minded.
Sooooo WTF is chicken and waffles?!?!?!?!
Is the chicken deep fried then stuck on a sweet waffle?
mmmm whitefish tacos mmmmmm
you're just jealous of the zero crime rate in the uk darkie
That's racist.
Not every island of white people is a paradise of peace and prosperity. e.g. New Zealand.
Whilst i'm all for casual racism, wtf is chicken and waffles!
Oh, for craps sake!!!
Chicken_and_waffles
It's so funny how off-putting this is to the brits. Sweet and salty is a super standard flavor profile. You've never got syrup on your bacon or sausage links at breakfast?
jesus christ lord savior above that tastes terrible in my mind
Wait, so maple-flavored ham or bacon isn't a thing in Britain? Syrup and breakfast sausage is amazing. That's crazy.
i've tried a chicken dish with a mapley sauce and shreds of bacon before. it was ok. didn't appeal strongly. the wikipedia picture which prompted my last post looked like a piece of deep-fried KFC chicken sitting on a waffle with some whipped cream. i find the thought of that meal alone to be repulsive.
ps that's an australian perspective
pps we don't eat waffles here so that could be adding to the foreignness for me
I dunno, maple or honey flavoured ham or whatever is a totally different beast altogether from combining waffles with KFC chicken. I also would have some pretty major reservations about it, and I'm Canadian.
Funnily I've had bacon and sausages beside pancakes and syrup tons of times without any problems. I think that's it!
KFC for breakfast is gross.
funny, i thought you were european for some reason? weird
I wouldn't have heard of chicken and waffles if it wasn't for man vs food.
@rpm, i kind of am i guess in the sense that i've lived in europe since 2003 (study, now finished) and going back to canada doesn't appeal to me much. i was there in october for a family meetup, ate pancakes and bacon lol.
I personally find things like pancakes and bacon with maple syrup far too sweet - defo too sweet for breakfast! But sure sure sweet and salty.
Seems to me like someone thought "I like waffles...I like fried chicken..."
However - I might try this. So are the waffles made with sugar or do you get the sweetness from syrup poured on?
For the record, fried chicken and waffles isn't necessarily a breakfast thing.
The waffles are made with standard batter and the syrup is then poured on. Delicious.
Yeah I just see waffles as a pancake alternative (i.e. breakfast), or a delicious dessert topped with icecream and fruit or some shit. In both formations, fried chicken just doesn't enter the picture...
true, we're making crepes later today.
It's not the chicken that is confusing you it's the choice of starches. Waffles are replacing bread, potatoes or rice. Sweet and savory is a much used flavour combo now in food which I am sure you are aware of. The best thing to do is start trying combos, give out free samples and see what comes of it. Be the original and not the copy and it could pay off in spades.
Well I'm pretty sure I'd be first in UK doing it...but I'm not sure people would even try it...
My initial reaction was "yuck" and i'm very open minded with food. Im not a massive fan of bacon with syrup bear in mind - just too sweet for me.
I'm gonna cook some this weekend and see what I think.
I'm doing pop ups in cool pubs and I think drunk people might just love it!
I've never had it. I'd be willing to try it, but I don't expect that I'd like it.
Now that Pennsylvania Dutch version it mentions, I could see that being good.
lol...
Also, it doesn't seem to have been mentioned itt, but every place I've had it, you have a choice between gravy(typically a southern white gravy) or syrup-- or both ofc. Syrup is in fact too much for me, although I may drizzle a bit on if it's good maple syrup.
But yeah, I'm just taken a back that this is such a shock to people. You've never had a savory crepe?
Savory crepes are something different from crepes wrapped around KFC chicken.
IT ISN'T KFC CHICKEN!
Nobody here has ever had a decent piece of fried chicken in their life? Hit up a soul restaurant. Broaden your horizons. If people are THIS opposed to chicken and waffles, how do you even get CLOSE to all the other delicacies this world has to offer? What do you do when you travel?
this.
so much this.
wilbur, even if you aren't into the chicken and waffles thing, if what most people think of when they think of fried chicken is KFC, then you have a ripe market. KFC isn't even close to the best large chain fried chicken. It's actually, probably the worst. And then there is a whole world of high caliber fried chicken...
i've never had good fried chicken, but the prospect sounds amazing tbh. i happen to enjoy kfc, so would love to try a high caliber breast.
you can certainly make good fried chicken breast-- but it's rare. Legs, thighs, and wings are where it's at for fried chicken imo.
this KFC wing sitting on a waffle perception is probably my fault because that's how i described the wiki picture of "chicken and waffles" when i first saw it.
It is fried chicken...but its black people fried chicken. Theres no grease that runs onto your waffle, and it isnt kfc tasting.
Its pure awesome, with a fluffy waffle underneath. And Ill throw a wrench at you.
Many people...add not only syrup...but also hotsauce
this confirmed.
All fried chicken is not KFC.
Also, peeps are confused. Chicken AND waffles is not chicken ON waffles. Personally I like to eat the chicken with a side of greens and basically eat the waffles with syrup as dessert. And I've only ever had it for dinner.
Dark meat for sure is the way to go with fried chicken and greens cooked with a ham hock somehow makes something healthy so deliciously not.
This thread reminds me of a question I asked elsewhere this week...
Why is chicken fried bacon not a thing???
i have a feeling that part of the problem us non-US folk are having getting our heads around this chicken/waffle deal comes from the fact that (at least in aus, and i would assume the UK/Ireland etc as well) we don't eat near as much fried chicken or waffles as people in the US do. i'm just guessing though
This. The last time I had a waffle must have been when in New York 15 odd years ago. I didn't like it much. Just like a massive sugar hit...
As for fried chicken...haven't eaten in something like 5 years I'd guess. this is KFC when drunk though.
There are lots places doing amazing (I say amazing I haven't tired it) fried chicken in London at the moment. Pimped up junk food is massive here on the street food scene.
But...but....chicken and waffles! I sent the wiki page to some of my "foodie" mates and their general reply was along the lines of "Lol fat Americans" ;)
lol i just re-read this thread and saw fried chicken and waffles being referred to as a "delicacy"
LOL fine. Good point. I didn't mean delicacy, I meant like, things that are eaten by other ethnic groups. My vocabulary not good is.
Fried boneless chicken thighs, drizzled with Sriracha in a waffle with maple syrup and crumbled blue cheese. Fold it like a taco and it's go time.
Are you gonna argue with jyms about food? I don't think so.
Well no, but sriracha could make anything taste edible
FWIW, I'm not a huge fan of sweet or fruit in most of my food. What I have found though through a lot of reading and learning lately is that the right amount of counter flavours without dominating the primary flavour can make a huge difference. Lemon juice, honey, maple syrup, citrus zest and anything else along those lines actually make a huge difference. Think of things like maple syrup or brown sugar in BBQ sauce, pineapple on pork or pizza, raisins in stuffing or cranberry sauce on Turkey. A lot of those I don't eat but through experimentation I am figuring out why they are always together.
Also, fuck you google chrome for trying to tell me how to spell flavour.
Hah, just listening to the Joe Rogan podcast when the subject of racism came up
Quote:
...heard it recently at Rosco's Chicken and Waffles, a very black establishment, ...
Goes on to say "I don't know who invented the combination of chicken and waffles but god DAMN it's a winner". So if Joe Rogan and basically every single person on here except for the people who haven't tried it all love it, I guess I should go buy some flour and dead bird.
...then this just frontpaged reddit. What the hell universe
http://i.imgur.com/IOhKecs.jpg
looks like the universe is trying to tell you something. so yeah, post trip report here with pics.
i'm gobbling after eights right now - any weird combination with greasy savoury food i should try?
i mean, it has mint in it. and like, mint goes with stuff like lamb, as i learned in england. there are actually feasible food creations originating from that island believe it or not.
oh and chocolate, chocolate sauce on savoury food is also kind of in right?
baeder meinhof and I are old friends from leaning new german vocab, but I still just can't believe that my brain ever processed the idea of chicken and waffles without letting me know
when u can't think of anything to eat , eat cereal
WTF are lays?
It's walkers or you're a cunt.
Kiwi. Get the fuck on a plane and fly to LA. I'll pick you up and take you to Roscoes for chicken and waffles. The universe has spoken. You cannot ignore it.
Eat the laday.
what do you have on the van though?
Don't use ketchup in my burgers, but if people ask I have a bottle of *ahem* Daddies Ketchup stashed away.
I do a nice potato and chorizo hash that I put the ketchup out for...though its best with jalapeno hot sauce.
At Camden Town Brewery tonight if any FTR's in London fancy some wicked beers and amazing chicken.
Butterflied chicken breast, with ridiculously amazing hot sauces, sides of hash and funked up slaw. Yeah baby.
