Heavy-handed, too obvious, stilted...I'll give it a chance to find its legs but I dunno...
Yeah it went really fast, basically like an all inclusive 90 minute scorsese flick.
I like a lot of the actors. Has potential
haven't watched yet, on the Tivo. reviews said the first ep was not as good as the ones that follow.
I hate the intro scene (not sure what to call this... the little scene that is to music that will be the same for every episode.) Its very Big Lovesque, and while the sort of abstract metaphorical style works well with Big Love, I just don't like it for BWE.
Things did move really fast though.. I'm so accustomed to The Wire and Treme.. the whole developement of Jimmy moving out of the nest was so rushed and so we missed a lot of character development it seems.
I was a bit confused with who was who as far as the visiting gangsters were. Who did Capone come with? The young guy and the card cheat are from NY, the guy who argued with the young guy at the table is from the Chicago outfit, where is the wop who lost his marbles at the end from? Who arranged his demise? Why?
Had a little trouble with a few characters looking alike
It was a solid first episode, cannot wait for the rest
I really liked the "you can't be half a gangster" line delivered by jimmy.. but his little rant leading up to it was such weaksauce..
I hope they won't be doing too much of the OMG THERE WAS RACISM/ANTISEMITISM/SMOKING/WHATNOT in the future, I've already got Mad Men for that on mondays.
i hope michael k williams makes more of an appearance in future episodes
They could do that without making it seem awkward and unnecessary. The blackface stuff was fine, I didn't like stuff like the close-up on the tobacco ad and the book though. Basically they seemed to be put in just for the "shock" value, the book especially took focus away from the actual story.
/nit
but there WAS so much smoking in the future, didn't you see Millennium (1989)
Should I rephrase that? "Presently I hope that future episodes won't focus on how these current issues were even more widespread in the past".
Didn't see Millennium, but it has time travelers and Kris Kristofferson - it has to be awesome!
Blokes from Europe must speak with clarity, else my illusion shall be shattered and my days spent a weep in remembrance of what has past.
It also bugged me that all the signs etc. were all perfect, like they recently came out of a set design paint shop or something...
No wear and tear in the 20s I guess.
I was not impressed either, but heard it gets real good.
The thing is with really well thought out high quality hour long dramas (think the wire).. the entire body makes up an amazing story. We are so used to watching sitcoms on tv, so we are trained to expect a complete standalone something out of 30 minutes or 1hr.
Most people that I've talked to said that they almost gave up on the wire after the first few episodes. I didn't have this issue, but I can understand it. You just have to be patient with these epic hour long dramas that strive to be more than a high production value themed soap opera (think true blood.)
Yeah, boost, I also really hated the opening credits. It's obvious that it was created by the same people who did true blood / six feet under / etc, and they normally do an awesome job, but it didn't seem appropriate to this show at all. Even a different song on the same video might be 1000% better. Maybe I just hate that song.
ya, the music was def horribad. But I guess why I really hate it is that while this show is study of the various characters, one of the major characters is the setting. However they have almost ignored this in the opening credits by putting so much focus on Nucky himself. Yes hes the main character, but from those opening credits my mood is not altered to be in a better state to watch the show.
I really hope that they change the opening credits like they did with the wire.. otherwise I can see myself getting tilted just before each show starts for years to come.
i don't think i could watch a show like this waiting a week between each episode. it would take time to develop the characters and story and i just don't have the patience for it. i don't really watch much tv but when i do, it's so much nicer going from episode to episode and not having to wait. sounds like it could be good but probably will wait til i can dl it or something. but then again i don't even have cable.
True blood is glorified smut. I watched 5 minutes of it (my gf is a big fan) and I felt dirty for a week
true blood is massively disappointing to me, having been built up so highly from six feet under and american beauty
I agree with the above two posts.
re-watched episode 1 still have some confusion but I assume it will get cleared up later
I agree with everyone else that it all happened kind of fast. Almost felt like it could have been a standalone movie where they were setting up for a sequel. Meh ill watch the next episode.
A lot of people have been saying that this episode was a bit boring and such. We must give it time to develop. The first episode simply showed a shitload of potential. GOGOGO BOARDWALK EMPIRE!
Episode was anything but boring.
1) i agree with everything said about true blood. this new age vampire shit is retarded.
2) i heard this was just a mini-series like band of brothers. t/f?
1st ep was directed by scorsese
"I ain't building no bookcases." is the new "if you come at the king, you best not miss."
and ya.. this show has definitely found its legs..
awesome ep
loving this show
This is why I find it sad when people can't wade through "boring" episodes. God forbid the first episode isn't the most exciting episode ever. This show is getting sososo good...each episode is better than the last :D
the greektown is ours scene was pretty f awesome
Ok, haven't gotten past the first Tivo'd episode of Boardwalk yet, but have to throw in the .02 on True Blood...
I agree it is total crap, but if watching it with my wife makes her hot, especially the episode where the woman is chained/tied to the ceiling and the guy pretty much destroys her, gets me some serious lovin, I will watch it as much as she wants.
The look on Luciano's face when he realized it was his mom, not his wife, was lol.
Also Torio walking past the downed Mick boss as he tries to grab at Torio's sleeve made me laugh.
It's an A, I think I would give it a A+ except I have a terrible feeling we will eventually see Steve B waaaay too naked. Keep that robe closer to the bed!
who were the people who pwned that guy at the beginning, spitting on him/taking money/ect
also what the fuck is with that gay ass investigator whipping himself with a belt (soooo fucking weak)
Philly you have to pay attention and focus on details, both questions show me you're doing neither.
1) Luciano's guys, allegedly.
2) I had the same question. Here are my thoughts: he is a very holy man that never cheats on his wife, etc. He may have found Mrs. Schroeder attractive and began to beat himself because it is wrong for him to covet when he's already married...or something.
Holy people be trippin'.
1. idk i thought they were blaming it on luciano but it actually wasnt his boy
2. i know that part i just mean what the fuck is with them putting that weird shit in the show lol, its up there with the gonorrhea scene where the doctor was hammering something into lucianos cock lol
Writers don't usually put strange shit in the show for no good reason.
The agent fancies the mick. The mick got played by Nucky. The mick is also key to the investigation. I smells an affair coming.
Hmm...I missed the hair tie thing. I guess we need belt scenes to beat in small details.
It didn't matter who the guys on the street were, it was just a catalyst for Nucky to size up Luciano.
I think some HBO exec is obsessed with penis mistreatment in the name of science, it was long running & painful in Deadwood (all puns/double entendre intentional). Hopefully we're done with it in BW.
Anybody remember the cheese grater request in The Sopranos?
yea i guess the term moral fortitude was wrong i meant it like boog had said earlier, to show his level of religiosity and obviously by all the scars he already had it was something he had been riding on for a while, so obviously he does it to repent for his sins or w/e (in this case the shroeder whore)
I don't get the issue you all have with the belt scene. Its building character. We've all seen the uncorruptable do-gooder g-man character from these period pieces.. but what we haven't really seen is the flawed nature of these misguided crusaders. When we do its a boring and unimaginative hypocrisy, like a prohibition agent who has a drinking problem. In BWE, they are building a disturbed character with quite a bit more depth than his counterparts in similar cinema.
Michael Pitt...ridiculously underrated
holy shit
shit is about to get real. Jimmy is such a bad ass.
The series got off to a somewhat fitful start IMO, but it's been awesome the past few episodes.
that one nigga who is the Special Agents bitch or assistant or w/e is the fucking man
ya, right after he shot the guy, when he was trying to select a rock, def had me laughing.
Can't wait for Jimmy and Maskman to get busy. I'm hoping thats going to be the majority of what happens over the last two eps.
How do you know I drive a packard?
yessssssssssss
well i wasn't going to but you kinda talked me into it. BOOOOOOOOOOOM
Did I mention that this show's fucking awesome? TYVM for starting this thread, I would have missed it otherwise. Great season all around, and yeah the pace had def picked up over the last several episodes. Leaves me wanting moar.
first ep was meh....second ep was Fuck yaaaa.jpg
Boardwalk Empire State of Mind - Erik Weiner - YouTube
sososo awesome.
thoughts on season 2 finale anyone?
SPOILERS
thought it was great, i knew jimmy needed to die for a various number of reasons, #1 you cannot forgive betrayal, #2 jimmy was already dead on the inside. I really liked how Jimmy did everything he could to fix the mess he made, giving chalky way more money then he asked when handing over the KKK memebers, getting rid of Neary and then finally helping Nucky kill him, I didnt find his last words taunting like some did i felt them soothing like a friend trying to help a friend for the last time.
van alden is now living in capones back yard which will be interesting. margret does nothing but tilt me to no end but i suppose you need a oppisite for nuckys endless cold calculations on every step. i thought the editing for this episode was A+ including the godfather montage. and finally I think michael pitt's acting this season has been A+ which makes me sad to see him go. i felt really sad when his wife died, i felt sad when he killed his father and i felt sad again when i knew he had to die and even more sad that he didn't get to avenge his wife's killer. MORE CHALKY NEXT SEASON IMO
A+ episode imo
