Russians vs. Americans: A Werewolf Game for October 2015

Mod note: This game features many new players to FTR and I've massacred long-standing traditions here, so reading this part will be important.

BASIC WW RULES: You are expected to read your role pm and play to your win condition.
You are expected to post on a daily basis. If you go an entire game day without posting at least 1 time, you will be automatically subbed (if a sub is available). If you are unable to meet these requirements, send me a pm and I will find a sub or make some other arrangement.


IMPORTANT RULES: Do not edit posts. Do not post after Night or before Day. Do not talk about the game outside the game thread or wolf chat. Do not discuss mod communications. Players should play and mods should mod. We will do our utmost to not modkill anyone. The mods have the right to give warnings or issue punishments if these rules are broken.



Werewolf is an antagonistic game and arguments are part of the game. Please try to keep it civil and keep it fun.


VOTING: To vote for a lynch, type in bold "lynch Player XXX." If you wish to cancel your vote, type "rescind" in bold. You do not need to "rescind" if you simply vote for another player.


Note on self-voting: Self-voting will result in instant majority lynch and End of Day.


Ties in lynch: This is new: Traditionally ties at FTR are broken by the nominee who reaches the final vote total first. In this game we will break ties by randomizing (by the forum post number). Because this is a poker forum and variance is fun!


ITAs: This game will be feature an ITA session. ITAs are "In-Thread Attacks." On D2, there will be 2 1-hour windows in which you are allowed to shoot at other players in the game, with a 15% chance of killing your target. More rules will be explained at the EOD D1/SOD D2.

Americans: 16 of you are villagers. 12 of you are vanillagers. Your vote and your ITA shots are your weapons. You win by eliminating all wolves.


Healer: You are a villager who holds the power of life and death in your hands. On any game day you are alive, you may choose to heal a poisoned player. You may only use this power once per day. Your decision may be made at any time before that game day's deadline.


Polonium Poisoner: Each night, you may poison a player of your choice. If not healed, that player will die at the end of the next day.

Backup Poisoner: If the village poisoner dies before start of Day 3, you will take his or her job.


Spymaster: You are a villager who can learn the role or alignment of a player each night. On even numbered nights, you may look up the alignment (village, wolf) of a player of your choice. On odd numbered nights, you can learn the role (vanilla, poisoner, backup, seer, etc.) of a player of your choice.

On night 0, you will receive a randomized villager peek.



Russians: 5 of you are wolves in this game. 2 of you are vanilla wolves. Your vote and your ITA shots are your weapons, plus, you know, you're wolves! You have access to a QuickTopic thread for communications with other wolves and deciding your night actions. You win by reaching parity with the village, or when the village is mechanically unable to prevent parity. Each night you may night kill ("nom") one player of your choice. The night kill is a factional action which cannot be stopped (there are no angels in this game) as long as there is one wolf alive.


Spymaster: You are a wolf who specializes in intelligence gathering, deception and subterfuge. Every night starting n1, you may peek a player of your choice and learn his or her role.

Polonium Poisoner: Each night, you may poison a player of your choice. If not healed, that player will die at the end of the next day.

Backup Poisoner: You are a backup to the wolf poisoner. If you are still alive when he or she dies, you will be able to assume full poisoner powers.



Claiming: You may claim your role or character, but please be careful and do not quote any part of your role pm that discusses your character. Wolves will be given safe claims (names not in the game)

Order of night actions: All night actions occur simultaneously. That is, if a poisoner is killed during the night, his action will still be processed.

Miscellaneous notes:

Wolf actions may be proxied.
Length of day will generally be 48 hours, but there will be some tweaking based on my schedule. Night will be 24 hours and the thread will be locked.

OK the wolves have had about a 15-hour head start on the "getting know you" phase/team solidarity etc., so **** this, let's have a pro-villa early start and extra long Day 1.

I've played with a bunch of people in this game before, but BATM is the only one I've played with recently so everyone but him will start with a clean slate from me.

Everyone, that is, except dsax. He and I have known each other for years irl and he agreed to play this game as a personal favor to me, so ideally I'd like to see him live for a while since I have no idea if I'll ever be able to talk him into playing another game with me again. Clearly I won't be taking him off the table indefinitely, as doing so would be objectively terrible, but he is going to get a d1 pass from me unless he does something really egregious. Even then I might not campaign for his death until d2.

I hereby state that when I refer to monkey, it's supermonkeyface, while madmojomonkey is mojo.

I have some thoughts on the poisoning/healing mechanics in this game which might be wildly unpopular but I'm going to get them out there anyway.

The village has a poisoner and a healer, but the wolves only have a poisoner. The village poisoner is super super important because they effectively double our killing power and therefore they need to live as long as possible. The backup poisoner is still vital, but less so because they're only really useful if the first poisoner dies early. The wolf poisoner doubles the wolves killing power too, but they don't have to worry as much about their poisoner dying since their backup will kick in at any point that the original poisoner dies. I still strongly suspect that the wolves will try their hardest to protect their poisoners, possibly to the extent of having them bus vanilla wolves while the seer is still alive (which would still be pretty lol but it might happen).

so every morning we are going to wake up with 2 poisoned players. If we wake up with only 1 poisoned player, either the village poisoner targeted the wolves nk (village poisoner: try hard not to do this) or both teams poisoned the same player. When/if this happens, the lone poisoned player WILL ALWAYS BE A VILLAGER AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE HEALED NO MATTER WHAT. That's pretty obvious but the rest of the poisoning/healing mechanics will take place on the margins.

So when we wake up with 2 poisoned players, what should the healer do? There are a couple different schools of thought here.

The first and usually most popular thing to do is to have everyone discuss who should be healed. This can be good because it allows strong villagers to have input and direct a healer who might be unsure. But it opens the door to a lot of problems because then wolves will have a say in who gets healed as well and it gives them a chance to advocate for the healing of a teammate should one of them happen to be poisoned. It also allows the wolves a chance to play perfectly by only targeting players which they know won't be consensus village healing picks.

Therefore, I am of the opinion that we should all shut the hell up and let the healer decide for themselves who should live and who should die. This guarantees that the decision of who to heal will be made by a villager 100% of the time and it will force the wolves to target players who might be mislynch candidates anyway and the village therefore loses less by them dying because the wolves will have to pull more mislynch candidates out of their hairy asses if they want a shot at winning.

the poisoner stuff is a pretty cool way for us to force people to say what they think

Having a wolf poisoner with full backup seems almost broken to me but I suck at balancing so whatever

I would say the most dependable villagers are rilla and gabe (and gator, who is sub). rilla has been bang on form last few games. Best wolves, gabe and gator. Bad villagers, just bigred really, although on the rare occasion he puts the effort in he's good.

In in a game like this one with long days we lose so much information if the wagons flip at the last minute.

It should never be necessary if villagers put in real effort and make reads, which everyone will be expected to do.

I didn't expect a serious response for some reason, so thanks.

Usually with a player list I'm familiar with I can look at it, and even without seeing the rand, will know the ~6 players who are lynch candidates and the 3 or 4 that will never be lynchable unless peeked wolf. But asking that directly is probably... going to get people upset with me too easily, they'll think it's wolf behavior, yada yada. I think of games in probabilities sometimes, and was interested in your take... also good to know who I should deem as a reliable source of information.

You seem reasonable at any rate. How do you rate yourself in this lineup as a villager and as a wolf?

I used to be a solid villager but last few games it seems I've forgotten how to hunt wolves. I blame baudib. As for wolf, I have good games and bad games. I don't tend to shine all villager when I'm wolf. I do when I'm villager.

I didn't see these posts before I submitted my vote, but... Kami is almost certainly feigning / being spazzy for fun, she doesn't mean it, she's not serious, she's ~never serious AFAICT from the small sample size of her play that I've seen and what people have told me, and I think we wouldn't lose anything if she was to be voted out of the game

Whether that is "great" play or not, I don't know. If we see something else that's considerably wolfier we can go with that, but she's a good de facto lynch for being a haphazard villager

OngBonga, what is your past experience with Kami exactly

I modded last game and she was a wolf. I think previous game or maybe two she was villager. Other than that, she's new, so my read on her isn't mega confident or anything. But it's as good as I've got right now.

IDK... it's villagery in a level 1 kind of way. However, on every implication, I find it wolfy. Furthermore, talking mechanics is easy cover to sound involved when you're not actually. It's too early with no meta to jump on it, but I don't like it and HiFi has moved himself on the W side of neutral in my estimation.

As for hifi, I guess I felt his entrance was a little too excitable for a wolf at a new forum. I feel like the setup spec is null, it could be a wolf hiding behind easy talk, or it could be a new player settling in. But it was the level of activity before anyone else really got stuck in. That's what gave me villager vibes.

Without having done any research myself, my understanding of HiFi's meta is that she is capable of high volume as any role, and has been known to spam as a wolf to avoid being lynched

This is not me throwing shade at her, but me stating that clearing her for volume alone is likely foolish

It's why I have her effort as villagery side of neutral instead of outright villagery

MMM, I pretty much agree with your early reads on Ong and Wuf.

I'm familiar with HiFi but can't remember much about his play style so I can't help you there.

Tom is good in either role.

I used to be a solid villager but last few games it seems I've forgotten how to hunt wolves. I blame baudib. As for wolf, I have good games and bad games. I don't tend to shine all villager when I'm wolf. I do when I'm villager.

Anyway I found a wolf.
