wow, the links sent me on a thread of youtube live music, and i'm really amazed at radiohead. i just assumed yorke's epic vocals etc were the work of studio magicianry, kinda like how billy corgan sounds relatively mediocre live, but since he's such a perfectionist, the 10-track guitars and multi-toned vocals sound perfect on records, but he actually is amazing. proof:

while kinda sorta on the subject of smashing pumpkins, isn't it strange how for a band whose weakest and least consistent position was the drummer that they have such perfectly percussive riffs and driving drum lines that complement them perfectly. i good, simple example is "Love"

lol... Well, I was never a real big fan of the band. Sure, bro hymn was great. But they just don't have much range at all. And yeah I feel like that description applies to the vast majority of 90s-ish punk bands, very few exceptions, which is kind of sad given how popular it was imo

As for the pumpkin's comeback, man. I thought that after 7-8 years of mostly doing nothing, Billy would have all kinds of brilliant material to unleash on us. Unfortunately, I'd rank the disappointment I had from Zeitgeist right up there with that which I left my first girlfriend with after we did it for the first time. It's just 90s alternative rock rehashed, and not in a particularly good / interesting manner.

But I mean, think about it. In the 90s, Corgan was in his 20s, and was filled with early life angst left over from his teenage years and shit. His music back then was just so dark and angry and full of self-pity, which is what made it so fucking awesome. Reading over lyrics from practically any song in Mellon Collie takes you directly to nightmare-land.

By the time zeitgeist came out he was in his late 30s, in a different stage of life and was singing about shit like how soliders should stop fighting (obv poke at the Iraq war, way to miss the boat Billy) or... well I don't know what else, I didn't get that much into after realizing how vanilla the album was... but def not nearly as profound as his earlier work

so maybe his sucking in Zeitgeist is just a function of being older and more mellowed out. You can't go thru life being the way Billy Corgan was in the mid 90s without putting a bullet in the back of your head at some point. So his music had to suffer, otherwise he would have gone the way of Kurt Cobain...
