Here in Prague, I saw a note about Josh on MySpace and checked it out.
By 10 p.m. the night of his death, Josh was being eulogized.
He killed himself over a girl "and other things," writes Flower King Of Flies on MySpace, who says the death was preventable. "This could of ben stoped," he says via a Myspace comment page that has become Josh's memorial. So it goes, Josh's life splayed out on the black backdrop he'd created as his space.
According to his words, Josh loved "girls who cry"; was married; was 8 feet, 11 inches tall and made $250,000 a year or more. Josh was a smartass. He posted self-portraits that featured him at his emo-kid best: shaggy hair, pouting lips, intentionally blank expression. He posted an ad for a clothing company called Emo Police that featured a man hanging from the P.
Emo, a 20-year-old sub-genre of punk rock, didn't kill Josh, even if emo songs are mostly un-ironic paeans to self-pity. Kids kill themselves whether they listen to country or classical. The death-trip soundtrack can easily be Snoop Dogg or Slayer; on Josh's page, it's Senses Fail.
Josh wanted. He sought attention by posting surveys in his blog with categories like "Would you ..." and questions like "stick up for me if I was being put down?" In another, he queried friends as to whether they loved him, had crushes on him, etc. The surveys, common among Myspace teenagers, mean little more than that the kid dug compliments. Craved 'em.
Sixty-two times he was eulogized -- sometimes with just one line, sometimes with just a word -- in the first 17 hours. "i'm speechless," wrote Kelsey, a 17-year-old from San Juan Capistrano who enjoys "good times." "Rest in peace, Josh." Now I know Josh, know that his friend YOUR KISSES MAKE MY HEART STOP says he was the happiest guy around. He protected her from mean guys at school, protected her from spiders, always told her to smile. "unfortunatly we had a scary about 4 days ago he atemted suicid and failed we were all on his back ever since but this mornig right before school he posted this on a bulliton ..." she wrote me. "as soon as my friend rach saw that she told mimi and mimis mom call the police and drove up to his house (they live 1 street up from each other) she found it was to late. if i could telll josh one thing is that i love you and i wish that you could have send the people that hold you dear to there hearts. you always seid that nothing is as bad as it seem."
Kids type quicker than they think. They bleed words, don't contrive them, and, even if I disdain Net-speak, I have the luxury of never needing to type so frantically. Immersed in his requiem, not 30 hours after he did what he did, I know Joshua Anson Ballard. With his suicide announced on an Internet bulletin, his life remembered in a series of hastily typed prose that comes in blurbs and missives, and his loved ones handling their grieving through instant messages and blogs, will forever words be left on his Web page rather than coins or roses on his grave? We'll have to visit every Nov. 29.

A large part of what makes sick jokes funny is the shock value. You're not supposed to find these things funny, and that makes it funnier than it is, in a weird way. I was at this party last night, and this girl (ame party differnt girl) that I have seen around was there, and I just keep hittin her with corney ass lines, creative corney though. And then I go and point out how corney they are. Any ways, I jsut kept on being corney as hell but serious, then finally I was like "You know Im just messin around with these corney pickup lines, they are just funny you know? Like I dont wanna have sex with you or anything." Witch was completely honest actually, I have a girlfriend, and Im not into cheating. But it was so funny to me, but not in like a laughing way. I built it up so much with the corney jokes then there was just that super offensive harsh punch line and the look on her face was just priceless. The bonus to the joke was that, because of this, she turned out to want me even more. She pratically told me she would sleep with me that night.
Another quick example would be talking to someone and ask them a question ... as if you are actually interested. Its gotta be a good question, one that will kinda have them going on a while explaining. Then just cut them off and tell them you thought it would be polite to ask, but that you really could care less. Its such a shock, the look on thier face is just priceless. And the funniest part is you would think they would get mad, but normally they just are stunned and kinda intrigued...
So yes I have a twisted sense of humor, I like to fuck with people, but I still feel for some reason the original post was just not in good taste. And Im sorry for rambling a lot....

First let me just sum up a few things for everyone...
Those people who say suicide is weak and whimpy and how could you ever off yourself because of another person, then you yourself have not felt that deeply for someone. That doesnt mean there isnt more feeling it just means you havent felt it yet and someone else has. Things can add up in peoples lives. Think about the worst day you ever had. Imagine it 10x worse for 5 months. On your worst day did you get dumped by the love of your life, has one of your family members died, have you lost your life savings to raise your family at a poker table, did you just get into an accident an run over a little kid. You cant imagine how many things can go wrong in peoples lifes to say that the pain they have is little and it is a whimpy way out. I dont condone suicide or say it is the right thing but putting someone who is dead down and making fun because they couldnt deal with there life? Because they were never taught proper methods to deal with stress? Because they just had the shitstorm weak of there life? Thats bullshit. Excuse the language but everyone that believes that is very close minded and arrogant. I respect a lot of your oppinions and ideas but a lot of what I have heard in this thread is immature or disrespectful and a subject like this should be taken more serious especially with the maturity that we should expect on this forum.

Laughter is a defense mechanism our body uses to relieve stress. It's ok to find humor in tragedy, if only for the sake of getting through it. It's possible to be genuinely empathetic and still find humor in something. It usually seems innappropriate, but it's not. It's just what we do.
Why is it funny that some kid we don't know killed himself over something that didn't justify it? To me it's because he took himself too seriously. To stretch the circumstance a little further, those who find this humorous may feel that killing yourself over a woman is not too far removed from setting yourself on fire because your poptarts taste funny.

The busy-ness of making funeral arrangements, greeting friends and sharing memories kept us conveniently distracted so that our brains would not stumble into the pockets of grief scattered throughout our mind. We would spend enough time there over the months ahead so the distractions were welcomed.
After two viewings, a memorial service and a graveside service, our family gathered at my parents’ home for a needed meal and some rest. We picked at our dinner, a generously donated gift of the usuals. Chicken Tetrazine, green bean casserole with the little canned onion rings on top, buttery homemade rolls and rich chocolate brownies made from scratch. Then we slumped into our seats in the living room and let out a collective sigh. We looked like warriors that had just returned from battle and our faces showed the fatigue of defeat. THEN, for the next two hours, we told jokes.
I am now working on a case where an inmate is suing my great state because one of the guards jokingly told him (or maybe another inmate) after he was complaining about something that maybe he should just go kill himself. When the guard came back later, the inmate asked him how (as is in how should I kill myself) and the guard told him to "be creative." The inmate then later tried to kill himself and is now suing the state saying the guard made him do it.

To the people saing don't get hostile, Isnt laughing at somebody being miserable and then dying sort kinda just a tiny bit hostile in the first place? It isnt excactly friendly is it.
I'm reminded of a Mary Tyler Moore episode. Fictional situation, real issue. The clown at the TV station was killed by an elephant while 'Chuckles' was dressed as a giant peanut. Everyone but Mary found this funny in addition to the saddness. Mary spent the entire episode belittling the others for laughing at a death. Then at the funeral, Mary herself couldn't stop giggling at the situation.Quote:

In another related story, a local DJ on our radio was talking seriously about how he had thought about suicide, but he was too chicken/weak to go through with it. He got into MAJOR shit and had to make a public apology elaborating that he simply got too scared to pull the trigger and that the chicken part is suicide.
Point is, death is scary and serious. Suicide brings on it's own issues. But some people feel that laughter is a way of accepting that which they don't understand or can't deal with. Others have just accepted a death as a death (which is very easy to do when the person is someone they never had contact with and therefore can't think of as 'real') and those people see a guy who used an unorthodox and inpersonal way to inform total strangers of his personal actions. There is a little comedy in there, and we can't fault those for finding the humor. But I'm not laughing.
The funny thing is this kid killed himself and the last thing he did before he did it was post on his myspace.
Whenever i commit suicide i will be sure to post in the Commune before i go AWOL.
Another funny thing is he is EMO and EMO like rilla said is a disease. Rumour has it that his actual sicide note that he posted on his website and not his myspace blog said he did this all over a high school girlfriend.
Damn my g/f of 2-1/2 years cheated on me in september. Do i go commit suicide no i say fuck that shit and start "prowlin" again.
