blaah.. yah I can relate. hit me up on msn!
Man, I wonder if anyone in the history of online poker has suffered the swings that we have had at midstakes (I say this at the risk of sounding self-absorbed but whatever). Obviously this has something to do with the way we play but who else has months and months of solid profit and then lose over 100 buyins in 2 months. My downswong is at 75k now - only the start of it coming from above 5/10 and what 50k now for you? All this in two months seemingly playing the same. Poker has gotten to be such a sick thing. God I hate momentum.
I remember when people thought that 20 BIs was enough for a limit. I regularly have 10-15 BI swings daily. This is my second >100 BI downswing (Amazingly, I can't remember how I recovered from my last one). You may have had your >100 deflowering with this most recent one and we've both had several >50 ones. Poker is just such a sick sick beast. Those insightful downswing posts of "Just when you think it can't get any worse, it will" don't even really cover it. It's more like "You will be entirely convinced that there is no way you will ever win at poker again, period". How does one go from the biggest winners in the game to losing at a much more rapid rate than the biggest megafishes you've ever come across?
It's just such a futile thing trying to retool or work hard on your game when you lose every flip and are on the wrong end of every cooler. The edge that gives opponents seems insurmountable - that is, the dynamic in which your opponent views you as always trying to get unstuck (and unfortunately you are even if you're not tilted in the slightest) and thus seem to soulread you nonstop - the illogical trap of "If i have the best hand he will fold and if i'm bluffing he will call". You can't help but second-guess every marginal decision and every 3-bet pot you have an incredibly marginal session make/break decision. It's like when you lose a couple buyins HU vs someone you should quit them, except at 6 max it's compounded 5-fold. If you implemented a stop-loss, you simply wouldn't be able to ever play poker. We both took extended breaks of no poker, took a vacation, tried playing shorter sessions, executed good game selection etc. It's really a fascinating thing, the psychology of a downswing. There must be so many subtle and unconscious things which lead to one, as that can really be the only explanation (either than poker is rigged obv).
Anyway, I could go on but the whole thing really interests me as I've experienced this soul crushing experience several times over the past few years now and never really posted too much about it (I thank some of my friends, especially you Genitruc and Alexos/Griffey for listening to the odd msn rant). I'm sure there's something in our makeup which causes it as players who I believe (perhaps incorrectly) we are both as good as are able to navigate around these pitfalls where we cannot. There's a self-pitying side that wants to take solace in whoever it is that said that the difference between being stuck in the limbo of midstakes and getting to HSNL is the outcome of your five biggest pots (no idea who said that so i might have imagined it because it's probably something someone like me made up to make themselves feel better) but I'll try to avoid that cop-out.
Sorry for the hijack, but it was related to what you're going through, and this glorified whine wasn't worthy of it's own thread and I'm too embarrassed to post in the Tilt forum :p
Here's to better days.
Btw, you should play some RUSH poker. I just shipped a buyin there and I already feel like my better days are just around the corner.....seriously though it's actually pretty fun. I just got 2 tables of it up and must've played 1k hands in an hour and it's super fishy. It'd be interesting if they got nl 200 or nl 400 going...
great post
also lol @ "+100 deflowering"
can't imagine going through a 100BI downswing, I would have quit poker or quit life a few times before getting there. sigh
gl guys
im due for a vacation soon, any interpoker events coming up?
nothing on the immediate radar but you will be among the 1st to know next time there s another sweet promo
moved down to mainly nl100 euro today just to clear my head and really take it slowly with each decision. also played a 30 euro rebuy.
I haven't had back-to-back winning sessions since December 10-11.
Today looked like it might be different; I was in 2nd place with 38 ppl left in the rebuy (1st was 10k whee) and got it w QQ vs the fishy chip-leader who limp-shoved 77. Flop 458 turn J river 7 gg.
The nl100 games were really soft, unsurprisingly.
The 1st buyin I lost came when a 38/35 player raised the CO, I repopped TT and shoved over his small 4 bet (shipped a buyin over to his QQ).
Next buyin came when a lagg squeezed from the BB after a I raised from the CO and a weak player flatted from the SB, I shoved A8s and he snapped w KK.
Next up was 3-barelling AQ on J9T board where turn and riv bricked vs an 85/24 who ended up with QJ and timebanked before calling the river shove 125 bb's deep.
Then I punished KK from the SB and got 3 callers. An unknown 50/25 minraised my c bet on 258r. Vs most passive players who limp-call from EP it's a pretty trivial fold (or call flop and fold to further aggression) but a splashy player can just have so many random hands either trying to bluff me off of AK or "see where they're at (then convince themselves into callin it off lol)" with a hand like 78... I shoved and lost to 222.
next I squeezed KK huge to a raise and 3 callers. SB (45/4) flatted and flop came AA4 and I pot-shoved (god my squeeze was soooo big) and he snapped with A5o gg.
Following buyin came when the 85/24 fish from the 1st buyin, now sitting with 350bb s decided to donk out for the first time of the session on AK4cc fd flop. I flatted A6s (no FD). Normally vs this player I'd raise for value (he's usually bet-calling gutters and Kx) but I had just rape-called him twice in a row for big pots with 3rd pair and A hi after his draws missed and he full-potted the riv OOP. It felt like he was tilting so I wanted to let him spew, figuring he'd have lots of pure air.
Turn paired the 4 (board now AK44ccss) bringing a spade draw and he potted again, I flatted. Riv 9s and he potted for about 80bb s and I snapped and shipped him the biggest nl100 hand of the session to his 67s that bet the flop w 7 hi, turned the flushdraw and rivered the flush.
Final buyin came after I repopped AA on the BTN and a loose player flatted from the CO 90bb's deep. Flop K83r, I 2/3 potted it, he called, turn 8 and he shoved his last 60 bbs or so into me and I called and lost to his A8o.
Biggest hand I won in the 800 hand session was 57bb's. Feel like I stayed very level-headed throughout and took lots of time with every decision, so can't complain about that. To say that the results are/have been frustrating is just such an understatement... At least this didn't happen at stakes 4x higher today.
Prob gonna fire up another session in a few minutes.
Rav - nice post man. I don't think I've ever had a >100 buyin downer, but I've definitely had my share of >50-60ish buyin downers. I can relate to the ridiculousness. Hell.. I started this month running like 35 buyins under EV in like 7 days lol.
Wish I knew a good way to deal with these downers though. I mean, it all comes down to the belief that poker variance will/MUST turn at some point. The second you stop believing that is prob big problems... or probably just quitting.
Rushpoker - I agree.. rush poker is definitely a fun break from the normal grinds with standard regs etc. Just play every hand.. since nobody has reads on you.. feels good!
Geni - how did your coaching session end up going? what stakes did you play during the coaching?
coaching was really great grif. played 2-4, 4 tables, and sucked out on a reg after floating the flop in a rr pot and also somehow got it aipf w QQ vs a tight villain I had been rr a lot (action went i 3 bet, he 4 bets small, i click it back, he 6 bet-shoves) and won on a KQJT 4 flush board (i had no flush card).
it was really awesome to brutally dissect each spot as it happened. the differences in our decisions were mainly minor betsize adjustments and checking back a couple flops with big hands where I tend to just auto c-bet.
It made me feel both good about my game and eager to go deeper into the details of each hand as it happens. looking forward to the next session (as long as i m not busto!).
What kind of spots did he suggest to consider checking back instead of auto cbet?
K, play Rush poker IMMEDIATELY. I play rush poker, made 15 BIs there in like 1k hands and then ship 2nd in 100k gtd for 20k being a massive lucksack (veiled brag). goooooooooogogogogogo
wow huge, awesome!Quote:

have had crazy things going down personally lately and haven t had a real grind since saturday night.
i was blown away by the softness of the nl100 euro games and would be grinding hard if I weren t about to pass out right now. plan is to grind the fuck out of those games and I'll make a point of posting detailed updates tomorrow and thursday then reevaluate on friday.

wowza... why would you ever check this if you can get 3 streets vs Kx against a loose passive?Quote:

sort of disagree there... AAK board seems like the worse to do this on, since if he hits a a pair on the turn its gonna be third pair, unlikely you get 2 streets.
I'd like it much more on an AA2 board for example.
I could see this play working vs more aggressive fish though.
just so you know, in this spot we were facing a 65/17 who flatted from SB
Decided to stop after shipping 8 bi's in my 1st 900 hands today. Just looking to regain confidence and that sense that, invevitably, the money will come my way.
Had the doomswitch hit me as soon as I unclicked "auto-post blinds". These were all from my last orbit :

The last one was vs the biggest fish I've seen in a long, long time, about 3 hands after getting stacked by the 78o in 4 bet pot.
Oh well, shipped a few bi's and the games are juicy as fuck. I'm looking forward to some more easy ownage over the next few days.
today's grind is gonna be about volume. looking to 6-9 table for a few hours, then reevaluate after a break.
hopefully i can play well and put in at least 3k hands.
just taking a break after bout 2k hand session, made a coupl ebuyins at the cheeseburger stakes. prob gonna fire up another session in a bit.
played another short session and things went kind of meh but still managed to play 3.3k hands and ship about 5 bi's that are worth several fast food meals.
2k hands today, 4 more cheeseburgers made
dude, you're gonna get fat. Happy fat men rock. Enjoy small stakes unlimited holdem for a while longer!Quote:

I'm very tilted and annoyed... and bored by poker. 5 days of grinding

Just because I'm tilted and don't feel like doing anything else,

Villain here is a squeeze-happy monkey. Usually I'd 4-bet bluff quite a bit

Annoying thing about a session like this is that it makes me impatient to just move back up and ramp up the variance and say fuck you poker.
whoa blogs are censored?

Made 13 cheeseburgers in 2.4k hands today.
There was so much ownage it was just disgusting. It's sick to say, but
I don't even think I ran particularly hot. I was just in Matrix mode where I could
basically see everybody's cards. After about 10k hands at nl100 I think I have
most of the regs figured out and set up for soul-ownage pretty badly.
Here was the 1st big hand of the session :

That had me thinking that the vomit-inducing session from yesterday was just gonna
continue to infinity. Thankfully, I stopped getting completely fucked by the deck
and went into full-out cyborg mode.
I have to run right now and don't have time to post and comment on many hands,
but I'll post this one that was particularly juicy, vs a pretty solid reg
(solid by cheeseburger standards, which doesn t mean much, I
mean what is he really repping on the river besides trips? He INSTA called
the turn raise, not even a thought... and why would he bet oop for value with Ax
when I'm repping a fking monster that is usually boated up on the riv?) :

yay mad cheeseburgers
In that previous bunch of hands.. I'd probably just raise the T6cc on the flop instead of floating his bet. These donk b/f K high boards like madness.
KK hand is meh.. easy to say 3bet pre but obv you know thats an option. If he's the type that will fold to 3bets with those positions, I like to 3bet those guys pretty polarized with those positions.
But gg 13!
grinded the shit out of the last 3 hours of a promotion today.
at one point I was 14-tabling with 6 turbo tables. it was a real test of endurance and I think i handled it well. towards the end I made two calls that, in hindsight, I don't really like, but i think the ev i lost in not plkaying my A game was more than compensated by the fact that I was sitting with my B game vs a ton of fish and the possibility of earning a few more hundred bucks for the end of the promo.
enough multi-tabling, probably gonna move up to double-cheeseburger stakes tomorrow. so far i ve made something like 33 buyins in 11k hands at nl100 and built up a decent online cushion for nl200.
maybe upgrade to some Big Macs soon?
wp tho, gl at 200nl
hmmm dbl cheeseburgers then quarters pounders w cheese then bigmacs imo
played some 1-2 including a deep table and made a couple buyins this aft.
then there were some incredible 2-4 PLO games running. the variance is dangerous, but we re talking 3 tables with more than half of the table seeing like 70% of flops.
i won every pot without showdown and lost the 3 all ins with 70%, 45% and 60% equity each time for a pretty big loss. i don t really regret it though since the games were amazing and i think i played perfectly with a massive massive edge. annoying because 2 of the 3 allins were on my last orbit vs the same opponent who i had been destroying.
meh griiiiind tomorrow.
god when i think about it plo has been responsible for a lot of this downswinging. i can t say it s from bad play either; i ve now lost my last 7 all ins with between 40 and 70% equity at the 2-4 and 3-6 tables.

Bump for being my favourite thread on FTR. So sick on so many levels.
It's hard to use the word "deserve" in conjunction with poker so I won't, but I hope things start to consistently pick up for you.
In the last hand where you had KJ, did you have a range of hands in mind that villain can have that missed the river like flush draws, or just had the feeling he was full of shit? Fun stuff either way.
tilted beyond belief
grinded the cheeseburgers up really well and have played 3 sessions since moving back up to more reasonable stakes
in the 3 sessions i ve lost enough to approach a new low point
i made an infinitely long post with all of the big hands, but the new ftr forum didn t want to let me post it because of all the "images" (i guess all of the HH s have "images" with hole cards and whatnot) so no use looking for sympathy. let s just say that the deck has been fucking me harder than ever.
so far through 7k hands of nl my W$@SD is 31%.
i just wanna vomit blahblahblahblahblahblah. i feel sorry for myself. congratulations to me!
so fucking boring, waiting for this to end.
played well today and got buttfucked yet again. there was an amazing 2-4 plo game running and I sat and immediately had this happen :

villain flips top set and ships the 2k pot, my biggest contested pot in a while, obv ggfu to me.
another big loss and my BR is at a new low
also just noticed your post Dex
thanks for the support. things will turn around, it s just sooooooo mind-numbingly boring waiting for it to happen. if just ONE or TWO of the past 9 huge plo pots I ve played had gone my way things would be completely different.
it s very BR risky playing those games, but when they re good, they softer than any game i m ever played at NL. i m talking a 40/15 "reg" sitting with 3 or 4 90/5 players and then me.
gl to you man.
oh yeah about the KJ hand (re : Dex) :
villain called my turn raise VERY quickly. he didn t seem terrible or braindead.
in his shoes, what hand makes sense to bet half pot with on the river? If he has Ax, besides the fact that it s hard to make trips, he has to be scared that I have a monster so leading makes zero sense (unless he s on some meta-game level where he things I m raising the turn with JT looking for a cheap showdown)
generally though, ppl at these stakes fear the nuts pretty badly so even with a hand like AJ I'd expect him to check call while expecting to see a rivered boat.
however, if he simply imagines what his hand could look like to me, I can easily figure he d think "hmmm i can have trips in this spot so I bet!"
just a level thing I guess but the deciding factors in this spot were the speed with wich he called (seems like he d wanna pause and figure out a plan with a marginal made hand like Tx that 2 barelled)
and the fact that when he polarizes his range to trips or better I beat a ton of his bluffs like clubs or straight draws that whiffed.
hmmm maybe i should be really pissed right now but i m not.
i hereby solemnly pledge to play nothing besides nl100 euro until i win at least 30 buyins NO MATTER HOW GOOD OTHER GAMES MIGHT BE.
also, i just reread my longwinded blurb about the KJ hand dex. all i really need to say about it, since it happened while playing a ton of tables was that the thought process was "hmm weird what is he representing? Ax or better. would he usually lead out with Ax that isn t full? doesn t seem to make sense. can he be bluffing? yes. do i beat a decent number of his bluffs? yes."
call.
Just got pumped up and fired up a session of cheeseburger stakes.
dropped 5 buyins in my first 450 hands and I don t think it s possible anymore to be clearheaded at the tables. this has just been going on for way too long to be possible. i won t even talk about the hands because it s besides the point. posting coolers and beats doesn t make it better or easier to get motivated.
i m not gonna go near a poker table until march 1st. the extent of my desperation, frustration, and general sense of having had my nuts ripped out of my scrotum time and time again over the past 4 months is impossible to explain. it s too much to bear at the moment.
last post for february :
[/IMG]
Awesome responses to the KJ hand, both the longhandand and shorthanded, and I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. You made it easy to follow your thought process in both explanations and it was an interesting insight.
The graph is obv gross :(
FWIW I think the 30 buyin mini-op might still be a good thing to focus on because it's potentially a way of looking past the immediate frustrations of session by session results.
Good luck in March and run good man.
I just took some time to reread everything I've posted in this blog since the summer.
Even though countless posts and articles and cheesy new-age psychology books have been written about reacting to adversity, I feel like it could be helpful for me to make yet another February post to articulate some general thoughts about the best way of overcoming this epic 4 month-long rut.
I have a big ego. Much of it is founded upon and nourished by the notion that my creativity and sensitivity empower me; it's no coincidence that I chose to pursue classical piano rather than physics or medicine or business despite feeling attracted by those other paths to varying degrees. When playing poker, this big creativity-based ego is the source of both great strength and glaring vulnerability. It empowers me to think about hands in sometimes unusual and "brilliant" ways but also makes me a huge sucker for the rush of marginal plays that serve no purpose outside of increasing variance for variance's sake.
The advantage is that in my poker "career" I've found myself in tons of unusual spots that most people who have patiently grinded up the ranks as small winners have never been in. I have become an extremely proficient handreader. The drawback is that I have often tilted myself by taking risks that are unnecessary to beating the various games I've played, thereby reducing the amount of "tilt-free" hands I play and increasing the frustration from seeing more straightforward, boring, disciplined players (players who would never sit HU vs me) move steadily up the ranks. There is tremendous power in being able to change gears, make hero calls and gigantic bluffs. Keeping these abilities in check and knowing when to metaphorically "release the big dogs" becomes the issue. For me, it's a constant dance between genius and madness.
This summer I feel like I struck a great balance where I was always capable of making big calls and folds without necessarily seeking out those spots unnecessarily. I had reached a space where I wasn't looking to prove anything. The internal beast that hungers for the cally-bluffy poker-crack was always present but rarely the one driving the bus. I simply let it speak when it was crying out too loudly to be ignored. I think that there are a few things I was doing during that period (roughly from august to early november, when everything went to hell) that can be learned from and help me draw up a plan going forward.
1 : assuming that most of my opponents suck
This is pretty self-explanatory. When I assume that people read hands and well as I do, I often end up levelling myself. Most of the people I am playing at low and midstakes simply aren't that bright or talented at poker. They don't worry about balancing ranges or exploiting others.
2 : taking an extra second before a crazy play to ask myself "is my inner beast compelling me to do this? is it crying out? or am I just looking for a way out of the boredom of these cheeseburger stakes and their dairy queen regs?"
If I think it's the beast that smells blood, I go with it. If I think I might just be getting bored, the decision is easy.
3 : find a regular time to play with space for "creative session planning"
Routine and ritual are important in order to provide a form of automatic momentum. Being inflexible doesn't make much sense either since many of my biggest wins have come vs epically bad late-night fish. I need to find a loose playing routine that can by supplemented by occasional random fish-hunting.
4 : begin every session with no more than 6 tables
Nothing fancy about this. I can always add on a couple as I settle into the session and see other great tables opening up. Starting up with too many can instantly get me feeling frantic and lead to the subtle tilt of feeling rushed.
5 : during sessions, direct all of my energy on maintaininga balanced state of mind
I don't need to worry about technical poker details while playing, instead I need to be focused on sustaining a performance mindset and being immune to results and zen-like in my fascinated, curiousity-based concentration.
6 : no plo for the time being
The games have been insanely profitable, but variance is just too high and my confidance simply can't withstand more brutal swings right now.
7 : A Simple Plan
I'll restrict my game-selection creativity according to the following rules :
-no nl200 until I've made 30 (after today's session, 35 lol) buyins at nl100
-no nl400 until I've made 20 buyins at nl200
-nothing above nl400 until I've made another 20 buyins there
-play 80k hands of NL in March, following the above BR rules. With RB and bonuses, I should be more than ready to get back on the horse in April if I'm able to be focused, disciplined and patient.
One thing to consider is being staked. Someone offered to front me 10k so that I can play higher and I have to admit it's tempting but I think I like the idea of returning to some simple, disciplined, routine-based grinding without the hysteria of massive swings and crazy implied life-tilt when running bad.
It's kind of weird you posted that because in my last post in this thread I actually typed a question along the lines of:
"What part(s) of your style of play or personality might lend themselves to the swongs you go through?"
But I deleted it before posting because it seemed a little personal.
I understand what you mean about your ego feeling it hasn't been rewarded with what it feels it's entitled to, cuz that's pretty much how I tend to feel. I can't reason or accept that bad people, or stupid people, succeed. I don't understand how people don't want to be better, or won't try if they do. I don't understand how people fail upwards when I am capable, confident enough to be decisive and act, but the only breaks I catch are temporary lulls in a frustrating monotony. Life is so much easier when I stop for a moment, assert control and switch those thoughts off. I take a knock, they come back and everything gets harder again. It's weird, but if the alternative to thinking too much is thinking less, then the solution is to think, be aware and focus on thinking less. It sounds counter-intuitive to a degree, but for myself at least, it takes conscious effort to let things slide and stop thinking too much. I have to catch myself or the default reaction is the part of me that benefits me least. I would hope that over time, prolonged conscious effort will give way to a natural much calmer, contented reaction.
If you're anything like me, the goals you've set out will give you focus and by extension the work to achieve them will give you the results you need, including the natural automation of better reactions through repetition if nothing else. I appreciate that you have extensive experience of playing poker, but there's logging hands and then there's playing within a purpose and rules that you consciously adhere to. We don't stand to learn in the former what we would in the latter, even if technically we would have wanted the same result all along.
You alluded to it but there's a great quote that says the distance between genius and insanity is measured only by success. Well it's application and effort that's going to put mileage between them. If you know what you want, keep going.
Ramble ramble ramble, but as much as I often want to be distanced from people the depth in variety of the human condition is fascinating. I hope if nothing else you find some positive reinforcement in what I've said.
Also try to stop getting 2-outered. Poker is a skill game, work on your not getting lucksacked skill.
Good post man!
I can relate to a few of those things for sure.
The "taking an extra second" thing is definitely good. In fact, I have two side by side monitors and in between them is a post it note that says "WAIT 3 SECONDS". It also happens to say "STOP at 4 BUYINS LOSS" and "BET/FOLD!"
Though I'll admit that the fact that these notes are perma there makes them easy to ignore.
I also agree with your 6 tables to start. Though on stars I feel like my starting pace is always slow, since I'm usually just waitlisting a ton of tables anyhow.
The strict 100nl and no shot taking is probably a good call!
thanks for the comments guys really appreciate them
starting up the new routine tomorrow bright and early. hopefully the sick canadian karma means i ll run good for 17 days or so.
I havent read your blog in a while, so sick that your downswing hasnt ended yet. I really hope your new gameplan will turn things around for you. GL man
Hey thanks for the encouragement wingster.
On march 1st, the starting day of my new routine, I felt sick, like I had the flu.
Turns out it wasn't the flu. It was mononucleosis which led to viral meningitis and a compromised liver. I've basically been in bed for 3 entire weeks and it looks like I could have almost that much time left being sick.
Played 4 tables of nl100 today for about 2.5 hours and it felt great. I really enjoyed the hands and felt like I played great. Too bad I ran like pure death and lost 4 buyins... The highlight hand was backdooring the nut flush on AKJT9ddd (i had A4dd) and losing to the backdoored straight flush (KQdd) and then losing w TT on KKT in a 3 bet pot to quad K's.
Really? Thanks poker!
Either way, I felt pretty lucid (1st time really since the beginning of this b.s.) and enjoyed it. Looks like I m now only 36 buyins away from nl200.
dude this is epically bad.. WTF!
same thing i said to griffey... don't give up on poker because you are way too good. im not sure how much it helps but its obvious you are on a very tough path right now, and i hope that changes very soon
Hi there (to the 3 or 4 people who read this blog from time to time).
As of this coming Monday, I will have been struggling through my illness for 7 weeks. The progress has been encouraging, although unpredictable. I'm nowhere near 100% and it turns out that this is pretty typical of adult mononucleosis. Plenty of people I've talked to have spoken of "full" recovery periods ranging from 3 months to a year or even never... I'm pretty confident I won't fall into the "never" category, but it is a little depressing, not having run once in almost 2 months after being close to fully prepared for my first half-marathon.
My tentative plan is to take it easy for one more weekend and then to start playing somewhat seriously again on Monday. Something like 3 hours of 4-tabling for the first week seems about right, exclusively at nl100. I was lucky enough to take down 2nd in a freeroll yesterday for 1k euros and hopefully I can take some of that momentum moving forward.
I'm not sure exactly how closely I'll stick to the plan I had drawn out just before falling ill. The buy-in requirements made a lot of sense when I had a "grind it out and make some solid rakeback" mentality but I'm not sure how optimal it is to be sitting at nl100 if I'm playing very attentively on 4 tables. We shall see.
Regardless, week 1 of my comeback will be all nl100, all 4-tabling. The single goal I have is to foster a completely zen-like awareness, a calmness, an openness and a totally curious state, as detached as possible from results. I don't fucking care if I drop 25 buyins, I just want to do some good and interesting thinking at the table.
Hope folks are doing well.
glad to see he's still aliiiive!! illnesses suck eh, makes u realise how unimportant other things are in relation to health.
glgl get better, make manies
Hey dude,
I'm glad to hear you're on the way back to 100% I hope this process speeds itself up for your sake.
Get better man!
thanks Is, played 2 teensy-weensy sessions this week and made 1$/hand so far... baby steps imo.
Back to the grind.
Starting back off, as promised, at nl100. Played about 4k hands of good solid poker since Tuesday.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed. I feel pretty unfazed by the runbad but a couple times tonight
I almost lost it.
Here are the highlights over the first 4k hands back at the tables :
When villain 3-bet the turn I kind of wanted to puke. This was definitely not what I expected :

Villain here was an unknown 21/17, opening plenty of buttons and playing pretty straightforwardly. Pretty obvious
thought process here (standard c-bet, bet turn to get him off less than Kx) until the river, which is one of 4 cards (any ace)
that I was planning on shoving. Couldn't believe he had what he had... :

Maybe it's normal for this to happen in the span of 2 decent sessions worth of play and I've just forgotten what poker feels like?
At least we're only talking about losing several cheeseburgers... Still pretty fucking frustrating.
nice mix of pwnage, suckouts, coolers and bluffs gone bad.

Very tilted, unfortunately to the point of feeling like I need to stop playing.
Had a disgusting session this morning, took a break when I felt like I was getting impatient.
Restarted after a little while ago, committed to be focused, patient, etc. I lasted 180 hands before feeling so tilty I had to shut it down :
Here villain is a hyper-aggro spewy 40/30 player over a decent sample :

Here villain is a pretty weak reg. I've seen a lot of ppl raising light their first orbit utg lately so I figured pre would pick up the pot quite a bit, also I can obviously rep a very strong range. As played, his hand is face-up and it sure feels like I can do a good job of repping AK KK QQ with the check-bet-bet line. Since the top of his range is JJ, maybe QQ once in a blue moon, seems like he kind of has to fold river (unless he puts me on pure air? nh sir) :

I'm not nearly as strong mentally as I thought I was. 5k hands of running like death and I already want to stop playing. Last night I felt frustrated but had an overall sense of things being ok. Now I can't say that I feel good about things overall at all. Fuck. Wtf am I supposed to do? Take another "break to clear my head" after basically not playing for 3 months? This is embarassing and absurd.
The greater the challenge the greater the opportunity for growth. Sorry if you were in no mood for altruism. It's evident that you're going through a rough time. You've done nothing but offer your encouragement in regards to my poker efforts and it has carried me a long way. Allow me to reciprocate by reminding you that if it's important to you to succeed (defined only by you obv) then the fortitude and clarity of mind will return to you. Also, stop trying to merge your quitting range imo.
In general, I'd say doing stuff like the K high (KQ) c/c down is probably unecessary high variance for how things are going for you.
Your JTo flop call on the low board float is probably not great. Better off floating with cards that he's likely to bluff. Also you don't even have a backdoor draw potential. I'd rather raise the flop if I wanted to continue with that hand.
TT hand - I'd probably bet turn for value. Don't expect him to go for the double value c/r. The river is probably close. It hits some of his air range, but also induces him to shove his air.
K8cc hand - why not bet the flop on A high board OOP? I really wouldn't shove that river ever, he's not gonna believe you rep anything credibly after checking the flop.
Rest of hands are lame obviously!
thx is
Today's session didn't start so well.
Here I had been winning every pot to start the HU. I felt like he'd be trying too hard to win this pot so I planned to call any pair down for at least 2 streets. Pretty lame the way it played out:

Oh well. Made a bit of a comeback and didn't lose too much. Feel like I played really well. A friend of mine made what I think was a great point a couple nights ago when he said that "taking breaks" from tilt in games where I'm probably +ev with even my C game is kind of stupid. Gonna just try to grind things out no matter what variance hands me. This hand was the result of a very specific read where I had seen villain check back a very strong hand previously vs me in pos on riv. Also I had been 3-betting him more than most and kind of expected the 4-bet bluff:
