wufwugy and jyms, any thoughts on this?: overhead press? dangerous? - BodyRecomposition Support Forums
cliffs notes: author argues that side lateral raises are far superior to overhead press for developing the side deltoids both in terms of development and safety. he does make some allowances for sports/powerlifting but not for fitness types.
from a personal standpoint, overhead press is something that I was going to cut out anyway. I do try to keep the heavy compounds in my routine as much as possible, and it isn't an issue of safety (I think) for me because it seems like I have decently flexible shoulders, it's just that I don't seem to get much benefit from it. Or I'm not really sure where it's actually hitting. And there may be a very small degree of awkwardness, if that makes any sense. (Usually standing barbell press but occasionally others)
I think there is enough evidence that overhead press can cause problems while not providing any real benefits that couldn't be had elsewhere. So if you want to avoid them, have at it
Anatomical safety is one of the few aspects of lifting that I don't have a very strong understanding of. My rule is if it hurts don't do it. But some things are simply stupid despite any pain. Things like spinal twisting under load. The shoulder impingement thing may actually be a big deal, yet because some people don't get it or the effects are delayed, it's not treated like a big deal. I've never actually looked for the info on OHP and impingement, so I can't say for sure. Shouldn't be too hard to find though. Personally, I could have developed at least two different shoulder problems because of this, but I don't know.
This is one of those exercises that most people do poorly, either because they don't understand the form or their shoulders don't rotate properly to get the side delts isolated enough in the movement (impingement). If you use them on a slight decline with the back supported by a vertical bench, then isolating the Anterior delt is great.
As I mentioned, I have had a ton of shoulder problems and surgeries, so I isolate my medial delt first any time I do shoulders so if I want to do presses, they have been pre-exhausted. But i rarely ever do pressses
Just so it's said here, never do presses or pull downs behind the neck. I know that's not what we are talking about, but they are some of the exercises you see people copy from who knows where and they are inexplicably bad.
Press is my favorite lift, coming in just ahead of the deadlift
to clarify, standing press, not the seated version
I'm pretty close to 135x5, should get there on my next 5-3-1 cycle at ~165bw. L33T YO.
We'll take this break in discussing weightlifting for our great science.

am a little drunk right naow.
I've never been able to do overhead presses properly or going too heavy, because I would instantly feel some very awkward shoulder movement and some pain. Only way I can do them with minimal discomfort is while "cheating", i.e. the power clean & push press.
I only ever do Arnold Presses, and I can go significantly heavy on these. Dumbells allow for a more natural ROM, and therefore are ultra comfy/don't hurt at all.
Random monopoly question:
Playing monopoly on playstation 2 with a friend the other day, here's the situation:
Hero has: Hotels on Mediterranean and Baltic, 3 railroads (including short line), both utilities, and 1 each of light blue and light purple, 2 oranges including new york, 2 reds including illinois, 2 yellows including marvin gardens, 2 greens including pennsylvania, and boardwalk. Effectively unlimited money
Friend has the rest of the properties and a decent amount of cash, say $1000
There are also 2 computers in the game with no properties (thanks guys) but a lot of money (say $2000 and $3000)
The $ amounts don't particularly matter that much but I figure that I'd mention them anyway.
Almost forgot: all relevant rules are as per standard rules (i.e. free parking is a neutral square) with 1 exception: landing on go either through direct roll or through a card pays $400 instead of $200. passing go without landing on it pays standard $200.
Assuming my friend doesn't want to trade, what is the status of this game? Specifically, do I have enough to wipe out the computers and then my friend?
My intuition at first was that I had enough to wipe out all players on a consistent basis, even if it would take some time. Being automated makes this go much quicker. Results: we played for maybe 20 more minutes and got bored and quit. Computer monies stayed about even, friend's went up slightly, but the sample was far too small to make any meaningful conclusions. However, I figure my friend at least draws a large portion of the time here, i.e. his expectation for going around the board is positive. That's still mostly just a guess.

it's painful to look at as a dog lover but if you're carrying a gun and get attacked by a pit, you have every right legally and ethically to kill it.
i'd expect there to be more back and forth (i.e. arguing) about the rights and logistics of carrying a handgun than the above. not going there.

I'm not sure what to think of this. Driving one would be a gas. Having a neighbor driving one off the end of your dock would be a pain in the ass.

'Rillas post in the holiday thread reminded me I haven't seen "Fear and Loathing in LV" in a while, so I watched it tonite.
I've seen that movie roughly 20 times and it just gets better everytime I watch it. It's the only movie I know that's like that. So many little subtleties that are overlooked if you're not 100% focused throughout the whole thing.
Guys, what's the consensus on Piers Morgan in the states?
Everyone in the UK thinks he's a smug cunt.

Just my luck, day of the big job interview and I've got a terrible chest/throat cold and can't talk without a reeking cough drop in my mouth.
I'm hoping that they take this as a "He will keep going despite being sick" rather than an "OMG he's going to get us sick!"
piers morgan is a douche because his name is piers morgan
Mine went well. I'm hoping to hear some good news within a week or so.
Hopefully yours just went awful from your perspective. I've was offered a job once after the worst interview of my life. Either I didn't do as bad as I thought, or everyone else did worse. Not sure which it was.
My laptop has an overheating problem. It has progressively gotten worse. The part of the plastic case, where the graphics card exhaust is, is melted. I have to prop up the back of the laptop and run one of those window mount fans behind it. It used to only need the fan when playing games or watching videos, but now with just normal use it will go nutso and lock up on me.
fuck.
This is kinda scary:
People Search | White Pages | Find People | FREE!
What sucks is that it quickly impresses but is also wildly inaccurate. A person a searched for, it found 3 of them, but they were all the same person, just at diff addresses that were associated with them at diff times. Also each one of them was a diff age, one was early 20's one late 20's and one early 30's.. but it was for sure the same person, not just same name.
So, I'm sure some of you remember me heckling the commune to vote for my friend in the North Coast Music Festival contest: http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...lp-181837.html
Anyways, he got a lot of buzz from winning that and getting to perform at the festival and hes has been doing really well because of it. It was just confirmed hes gonna go on a brief midwest tour with Twista (multi platinum chicago hip hop artist for those living under a rock). Four dates, March 9th in Ann Arbor, March 10th in Kent MI, March 24 in Bloomington IL, March 26 in Madison WI. All of these are college towns, and it should be fucking crazy. I'm gonna try to make it up to the one in Madison.
^ wow, that's awesome man, glad he's doing well

As a student I've got a lot of time on my hands so I'm trying to teach myself to cook well. Do you guys know of any good sources for cooking theory? I find recipes fun but I don't really feel like I know why I'm doing what I'm doing..
i'm going to google' tits'now
On Food and Cooking by Harold McGee is pretty fucking awesome. It goes into crazy depth about whats happening.

If you are robusto and have half a grand burning a whole in your pocket, you can pre order Modernist Cuisine by Nathan Mahyrvold. But if you have that sorta money laying around, be a good pal and buy me a copy too.
Amazon.com: Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking (9780982761007): Nathan Myhrvold, Chris Young, Maxime Bilet: Books
Other tomes of interest may be the Culinary Institute of America's text book. However I've never flipped through it myself (we used a passable but overall mediocre and uninspired text book where I went to school) so I can't fully endorse it.
Perhaps you would rather buy one of these

If I have to compare them, and I understand that I must now, the stupid ACN ppl are more tolerable than the stupid Monavie ppl because at least the stupid ACN ppl provide a shitty product that works, albeit shittily, as advertised shittily. The stupid Monavie ppl, in addition to being stupid and annoying, are fucking scammers. It's stupid shitty juice.
So do ACN people graduate to the Monavie juice or do the Monavie people become ACN reps, because in all seriousness, there is no way enough stupid people to only chase the dream once and give up and still have this many people on each side.

looked through bigred's snowboarding jacket thread got me thinking...
i have a LOT of jackets and coats. off the top of my head:
- 1 heavy coat for frigid temperatures, i.e. my old snowboarding coat
- 2 northfaces which i got as gifts, good all-purpose jackets. one is for fairly cold temps, other is more of a spring light jacket/wind breaker
- 1 garage jacket. for hanging out in my buddy's garage where we smoke cigars, burn propane heaters, etc.
- couple dress outerware things. in practice i rarely wear them.
- 1 old coat in car, in case someone else needs it or i get stranded or something. really should have 2 in there
probably a couple more
This reminds me.. I really should have some blankets or extra coats in my car in the winter. I guess I'm typically in pretty urban areas so it isn't an issue.. but the idea of getting stranded in the freezing cold and dieing of exposure sounds like a shitty way to go.
