Operation Winning is a Habit

My current entry for January's FTR hand of the month:

Villain stats - VPIP: 58, PFR: 32, 3B: 0, AF: 4.0, Hands: 31

But we have metagame. He's just started donking into me in a match that has turned in an agro-war pissing contest, which I'm winning by a nose thanks to some decent flops and a couple well-chosen spots to bluff raise. I've also made a big lay down, and folded to a flop raise twice. Leading up to this hand, I folded to a donk bet 3 hands prior (2 open folds in between), and I min-raised one with a set that didn't get to showdown about 8 hands before this. My turn for the set was a 1/2 psb that would have put him "nearly all in," and he folded. I put him "nearly all in" once before that, on the river where I was obviously strong and begging for a call. He folded.

My image as far as he can tell is 70/20 Lagg-tard. He thinks I'm bluffing a good bit on this flop.

All right, so I've been contemplating life, poker and why I suck at poker.

I think that I just have a large degree of gamble in me naturally, and even 6m is nittier than my natural instincts. In HU, I get to play every hand, be agro as I want, jam, shovel, min-bet. I'm not horrible at hand reading and range guessing. I do pick up on patterns. But at ring games I just ignore my reads. Too much gamble in me to fold enough, I suppose.

HU seems about right for me. I do want to fold every now and then. And I know that most HU turbo SnG's hinge on a couple big hands. It's not just about reading them, it's about being unreadable. Finding the patterns, then tweaking the patterns when the big hand arrives so he doesn't know where he's at.

Another big key is the adjustments. If you can guess where the match is headed, and get to the adjustment before the other guy realizes it, he changes his game right as you adjust. He's always a step behind.

Here are some of the obvious ones.

A pfr std of 3x is unusual. Most of the pfr's at HU5 are 2x. See a 3x pfr on the first hand and there's about a 90% chance you're up against a TAGG-reg who's opening 45-50% of his hands, most for 3x raises. Oddly, the TAGG-regs don't 4b much, but they flat a lot a of 3b's and donk. Laggy Tagg them with 3b/cbet used judiciously, and c/r's on the dry flops. Other than that, small ball and look for value to jam on or trap with.

See a limp, and it'll be a few hands before you know exactly what you're facing. About half the limpers are the loose passive, weak-tighties, and the small ball game works fine if you open it up a bit.

Other the other hand, some of them are Lagg-tards, and depending how aggressive they are, you can either tighten up and bit and counterpunch (if they're hyper agro) or you can play Laggy Tagg small ball with them but cross them up with the occasional 3b and c/r tossed in.

The stations emerge after about 8-10 hands. Anyone can catch 2nd pair a couple of times and make some call downs when you're playing small ball as a default. The only problem stations are the tight ones who play fewer than 40% of their hands. Their range is reasonably strong, so if they catch some hands early you get short stacked value betting the 2nd best hand. But any station who opens at least 50% of his hands, you just small ball him, play fit or fold post flop, and try to string together some nice betting lines for him to go broke on.

The odd thing about stations is that they hate being jammed preflop. Of all the styles, stations crack the worst during jam/fold time. I guess by nature the stations want to see the whole hand of poker play out, street after street. Jamming the flop seems like heresy to them. Mostly they play super weak-tight during jam/fold until they decide you're bluffing (which you are) and try to catch you at it with K8o. So...get one TPTK hand with 3 streets of value, and it's game nearly over. Jam/fold bluffy. He's still limping preflop with a 6.5xbb stack, so look to jam 2nd pair or better on the flop. They seem to hate that line, too.

The TAGG-regs are an interesting bunch. The biggest thing with them is that they're too cards face up. I've played that style so long it's ingrained in me, pretty much. "Oh, I'm getting out-aggressed, why don't I ... 3b light. And c/r a flop. And then try a donk lead on a paired board." The interesting thing about HU is that there are so many more draws.

Example, you're playing J9s and the flop is T83 with a BDFD live. Normally, we'd call that 8 straight outs + 1 for the back door flush, but here against a TAGG who's willing to bet and raise the flop, often the 3 J's are outs. He's probably in with a broadway Tx and is betting the shizzle out of TPGK, which is usually the nuts. And he's not often on JT. So you donk into him small after flatting his 3x pfr, and he raises bigger but he's not quite pot committed, and you jam all-in. He snap-insta calls, and you draw out on him. He's pissed off, but in fact you had it read right and had 12-ish outs and were pretty much a coin flip. Since you had an 1800 to 1200 chip lead, a 50-50 coin flip won't kill off the match if you lose it, and you do have fold equity. Sure, they insta-call a lot, but many of them will tank, too, and get away from it.

Also, I just have to say it's appalling how few folks know that there's a correct way to play the jam/fold with less than 15bb effective stacks. There's a chart and everything, but they don't seem to know it. Do they not read Colin Moshman or Kill Everyone or Mathematics of Poker? Or a web site? I almost feel bad for them. Oh, yeah, right.

So I played 73 hands of start-table 6max last night, and I ended up 3 stacks to the good. You get about a dozen hands on a guy and you can place his most likely style. Then, a big hand comes up, and you take the line that your HU SnG experience tells you is mostly likely to extract chips from him. And if you're rolled well enough to mind losing a few coin flips, you can play a crazy Lagg HU style with min-raises and 4b's and shovels, which I love doing. It's unorthodox. They're used to 6max and think they're agro, but it's aggression at a very different level HU. And you can add the pressure to them until you can almost see them steaming. If they're smart, they leave, or sit out until the table fills. If not, they try to adjust, and like a I said above watching the clockwork adjustments of a TAGG is just waiting for the moment to profit. Sure, it's bit higher variance, but it's the kind of variance I'm used to and they're not.

So...I think my full table 6max career is on hold for a while. I still will probably grind some start-table 6max, and stay on for some of the juicier ones just to keep my 6m game from rusting out completely. But playing 2 or 3 tables trying to find someone I can get 20 hands of HU cash game poker against is where I'll be for now.

I don´t get your sizing at all. I´d rather c/r(200) - 350 - shove than to offer the villian such an easy decision on turn.

Also it's near impossible to play 23s profitable there against pretty much anyone.

In the AQ hand your betting seems confused. He will call you down with worse sometimes, but not enough for you not to need fold equity against some better hands in his range. You can lead or c/c. C/r doesn't make a lot of sense. - Use flopzilla if you can and run his opening range and your calling range on unconnected paired boards vs some raggy semi-wet boards and you'll see what I mean. AQ on TTx is similar to AJ on QJ8. Would you c/r that?
Nevermind that you can just 3b to 450/fistpump ship with 30bb.


If you ever ended up with 70/20 stats without getting 83o 10 times in a row otb you were probably not opening nearly enough and calling way too much from oop. - see the 23s - that really shouldn't be in your calling range. The only way 70/20 could be close to correct is if he religiously folds to your open raises but raises your limps and/or generally plays really bad post flop and you want to play him IP rather than just win the blinds.

Anyway. gl with the new operation! HU sng's are aaaaaaaaaaaawesome. But just raise all your buttons and fold a lot more oop.

I get what you're sayin' about the 3s2s hand. I will take a look and see if I can improve my lines.

Here's some background on the hand. There was some metagame going on. As I recall, he was PFR 3x std, and had just switched (adjusted?) to some 2x PFR's, which I read postflop as weak. I had been 3b'ing him hard, and he appeared to me to keep his big combos in the 3x range and medium hands he could ditch to a 3b he started 2x'ing. So I was thinking he has Ax or Kx pretty much never. I had also donked into 4 or 5 paired boards, and the first few he ditched. The last time he jammed all-in, then he attacked two of my cbets on paired boards with c/r's.

OK, now this hand. I wanna c/r him, and honestly I thought he'd fold. I didn't have a plan for the hand except to bluff it somewhere all-in, since I knew he didn't like calling all-ins. Well, semi-bluff.

Any more advice? Thanks.

I'm down-swinging, and tilting a bit. These two hands (3 hands apart) ended a tournament I feel like I won on points, but he got the knockout. They kinda sum up my life at HU right now:

Played poker last night, but I have an excuse. I ate dinner there at the casino, grabbed a panini at McAllisters and walked over to the bar next to the poker room to catch a bit of the feel of the place. My hotel room overlooks the Canal Street entrance to the casino. I'm literally less than 100 meters from gambling central, and about 200 meters from the poker room. It's 5 PM here, a bit early to hit the casino. My flight tomorrow is 10 AM, so I'm thinking of grabbing a free meal at a reception funded by a Texas billionaire named Harry Lucas whose foundation supports mathematics education research. I have one of their grants, and I'm part of Project NExT, the top professional development organization for the MAA (Mathematics Association of America), which Lucas partially funds. He was at a talk my colleague gave, and he personally invited me.

I have this rule: if a billionaire invites me personally to an event, I go.

I haven't had this rule for long, because it happened for the first time about three hours ago. But the guy attends math conferences and actually shows up at the presentations by the faculty who are doing projects funded by his foundation.

I got a nap earlier in the day. I also have a line on a mini-grant through Arizona State University. They have $16 million worth of NSF grants for a "calculus readiness" project. I am trying to arrange for my university to be a pilot site for their grant-funded research project.

I guess I'm sayin' all this to say, it's never just about WHAT you know. Even in mathematics, the most theoretical and logical of the academic disciplines, it's still about networking and WHO you know. I'm a mediocre researcher who has a personality, and I get more grants and big assignments than many of my more talented and accomplished colleagues. Fortunately, I'm at a small college where my research is actually above average, and the grant work and national committee work that I do is exceptional.

If any of you 20-somethings are reading this, please get this life lesson. Poker is life. Understanding and reading people is a life skill, not just a poker skill. Being able to understand them and negotiate with them is a talent very few folks possess. I almost blew up a chance to be part of the ASU grant, but I read the woman's demeanor and shut the hell up and let her talk. She wanted to make an offer. Lots of mathematicians would have walked past her and not said anything. I watched it happen. I just stopped for 30 seconds to politely thank her for her presentation to our committee, you know, being a human being. But of the 20 other people in the meeting, all but one other person walked out without doing it. That person and myself got the offer, which will bring top drawer research and instructional materials to our university years ahead of it being published and offered elsewhere.

Poker is life. And sometimes, like in about 3 hours when I hit the casino for real, life is poker. You can learn a lot from this game.

Speaking of downswings, I'm downswinging hard in pokerz and irl. Lost ~100 at casino, picked a cab that broke down on the way to the airport Friday, ran out of gas a mile from the gas station near my house (which isn't bad luck, admittedly, just me being a dumbass). I'm on a 15 BI downswing with HU SnG's over about 30 total.

I quit the casino after somewhat more than an hour of paying $12/hr seat tax to watch 84o and such, plus I was seated with three LAGGs to my left and three TAGGs to my right. Only hand worth mentioning, I picked up AK in MP, played it std, Kxx monotone flop and my cbet gets called and raised. Ditch, hand goes to showdown, and the raiser has indeed flopped a flush with 65s.

I did learn a lot about myself and gambling however. I used to be able to go to a casino with "money to burn," just sit down at a table and plan to lose money "for fun." Now, I can't. I started this thread several years ago because I wanted a change of mindset from "poker/gambling is entertainment" to "poker is about winning, even if it's only a hobby, it's going to be a winning one." New Orleans proved to me that I have changed my mentality a ton.

With internet poker, I'm back to 2HUT's for a few days. I'm still well-rolled for the 5/6 games, but someone's gotta unflip the doomswitch before I'm playing the bigger games.

Read this in Griffey's op. For those who don't know, Griff's noted for his ridiculously positive "red line." I was thinking about his post, since HEM Leak Buster has made it quite clear that I'm in need of help postflop, especially my W$SD stat which is an embarrassing 46%. Most of my game seems reasonable, except a horrible turn/river EV, which of course is all the big pots. Here's what Griff says about barreling (and a link to his thread)

I'd say these are all factors which usually contribute to my higher than average red line. Some people only barrel with a strong semi bluff hand and give up all other hands. I tend to barrel regardless of my hand, if I strongly believe that their hand fits into one of these categories and can get a fold.

So....HEM Leak Buster has been the focus of my away from the table poker attention lately. I attached the notes I made as I went through (PDF).

Basically, losing too much with small pp's and sc's, losing too much from the BTN, SB and BB, losing too much in 3bet pots, especially when I flat (which I do too often).

I'll be posting some more thoughts later, especially how the pointers in LeakBuster align with the points Griffey makes about postflop.

I think my biggest leak is over-aggression. I don't have a change-of-pace I can throw at folks, so anyone who's aware can outplay me postflop. I hope to take Griffey's thoughts and get to work on my postflop lines, barreling only in profitable spots, and otherwise just ditching the hand.

You don't have to read much past that first line to sum up my biggest leak. Playing postflop. So I've been thinking about this. Here are my focus areas for the next little bit.

1. Work on laying down bad hands on the flop.
2. Decide on the flop how many barrels it would be WISE to fire (including ZERO in the decision matrix), then FIRE THAT MANY OR FEWER!!!!
3. Look for good implied odds spots to barrel to help mix up the TPTK cbetting flop/turn range.
4. Shut down oop, don't aggress myself into trouble by firing two barrels at hopeless boards, just making villain's c/c then c/c then bet line too easy.
5. Preflop hand selection - work on position, and playing a fewer number of sc's and small pp's agro in EP.

Basically, everything Griffey appears to do right I do wrong, so I'm going to be working through some postflop stuff in the evenings this week, see if I get anywhere.

My Dad's going to have surgery Feb 2, so I'm trying to get him some scripts working by then. He's got about 4-5 days of recovery time where he'll be laying around, so he's planning on a pokerfest. I got my scripting done today, and ran awful, and I'm just headed to bed.

Need to post some HH's tonight from last night's session. After working through Leak Buster, started planning hands based on showing up on the turn with a hand with potential. I should either have...

A. Value, or
B. Fold Equity.

If there was no strong likelihood of either being the case, why did I see a turn? Now, a great hand/flop like AK w/ Kxx can go sideways with a flush/straight card hitting on the turn, bringing in pretty much all the draws at once. But that's fine if I got there knowing there were a small handful of cards that could ruin the plan. But I shouldn't show up on the turn without some way of taking down the hand that I could see before committing chips on the flop.

It's not rocket surgery. It's just putting them on a range, accurately assessing potential, and folding the crap. Focus on W$SD percentage by not barreling into trouble with air, and by finding legitimate cbet/barrel spots where I can take down the hand with very little risk. Also, focus on not giving away reverse implied odds with hand/position selection preflop.

And I ran a bit more than +3 BI's last night over 800 hands, with a 60% W$SD.

Admittedly, I was on a heater, but I was also playing well for the first time since I started back. I feel like the rust was finally off my ring game pokers, and I was thinking clearly. LeakBuster helped some, but playing HU helped a lot, too. You get a lot of experience reading hands, playing trash hands in tough spots, and reading people. If you can forget about the trash hands, the rest is great for nano-stakes grinding. (Actually, HU experience with trash is helpful in the blind wars, in getting value from mediocre hands but not allowing yourself to go broke with them.)

If there was only one villian, I'd probably check behind on the flop, Call T & R or bet T & R if checked to. But, you have 2 villians so...

I have no idea what you're doing on the flop...maybe trying to rep bottom pair or mid-pair? With that tiny bet, they shouldn't fold and you don't get much value. Against whales, I'd try to get 3 streets of value. They won't fold an ace, you just hope they don't flop 2-pr or better.

I would bet just over 1/2 pot - 3/4 pot, about $1.80-$2.40. If villian is in C/C mode, I'd bet the low amount (1/2 pot+) for three streets. If I bet 2.40 and got called, I might Check behind Turn and bet River or switch to Calling mode for Turn and River if he bets. If he raised my flop bet, maybe consider folding. You can't win all the hands against fish, but you have a lot of equity.

As played, I'd probably bet about $2.40 on the Turn and fold to a raise.

hand 1 - AKs pre is cool. Flop c=bet size is pretty damn bad. Turn is bet-fold

hand 2 - 99. I don't like flop. You can bet-fold or check-fold. Check-fold is better. I mean, you haven't got a turn plan when you check-call. Even if 9d turns you're unhappy, all diamonds mess with your head, all cards T+, etc.

hand 3 - KJo pre is ok, so is folding though. Flop call confuses me, same with turn sizing. Call river.

This raise is larger than his standard 2x open - he uses 3x sometimes, too. Options: Fold, Call or Raise.

Fold: Pluses - Small pot, don't give away any of commanding chip lead when likely behind. Minuses - I've noted a big bet / small hand trend, but it's only a possible read at this point.

Call: Pluses - good implied odds for flop plus in position post. Minuses - no post flop leverage, likely have get it all in to get a fold, have to fold to any reasonable donk bet on the flop.

Raise: Pluses - chance to win a big pot right away, probably not much worse than 40-60 if called. Minuses - can easily give away the chip lead.

I think (after some calculating) this hand hits the flop about 40% of the time, but when it misses it misses comprehensively. Of the 40% it's about 1/3 Axx, 1/3 7xx and 1/3 FD's.

Easy fold, now that I analyze it. Any thoughts appreciated, tho.

Life update - I finished a great family room in our basement this Fall, and I got promoted early to full professor a couple months back. My Summer Honors program has (so far) survived the budget crisis (SummerHonors.org), and the twins turn 7 next week - two birthday parties in two days.

And I'm up just over $2 in HUT's, after losing 2 of 3 $1 tourneys last night and winning a handful tonight. Hope everyone is good. I'll be trolling around a bit, checking slevin's blog and generally seeing what FTR is up to.

OK, didn't feel great last night, so woke up after some sleep and couldn't get back to sleep, so I loaded up a $1 HU tourney. Played same guy 8 times, and beat him 5 of them. I had played 78 hands with him (and won 3 of 4) before he folded the first time - total maniac, he had two lines: (1) jam first and (2) call-then-jam. He also refused to lay down a hand and called every all-in when I had the nuts and just shoved.

Still, the variance is there, and even though I won my share of all-ins, I picked up AQ < AK for one loss, and got sucked out on for one of the others. Despite having a heavy edge imo, I won a dollar. I'm amazed how effective the total jam-jam-jam style was, and I got bled down waiting for something decent to shove with. Good lessons.

Won two more tonight, up 3 bucks for the day.

Yeah, I folded, but I'm rusty and it took me a few seconds to think it all the way through - I nearly timed out (he was a fish, and I played him a couple times afterwards and confirmed it). So I decided to mark it and review, more for practice than any concern I had missed the read. And A7 is NOT a great hand, though it's probably along the lines of what he had, reading backwards from other hands I saw him play later.

Yeah, life's been good, and I'm really getting into poker again, thinking about it at work (like now) and having that "can't wait to play" feeling again every evening. Maybe I can grind a bit in the next few months, and get out of the nanos up to the baby-micros!!

So, I just jam all-in w/ TT. Here's my notes on the guy:

"Small ball laggy, can be trapped because he's always betting and raising."

I don't wanna play TT postflop oop, 'cuz I won't know where I'm at with overcards. He will bet into me if I check, and he's decent at reading the game and applying just enough pressure.

AK is the absolute top of his range (I know - of anyone's range, but still). I think he calls the shove w/ A9+, 88+, KQ. I've played him 70 or 80 hands of HU and 3-max, starting a different table. So we have history. Maybe his range is tighter.

How bad is this?

OK, so I deposited a ridiculously tiny amount of $$ on Carbon, to add to the $.42 I found was still on my account there. Really just enjoying being back online and playing some. Didn't ask my wife about it, but it's honestly such a small amount of money, she can't really complain.

I'm single-tabling 4NL.

Short story, lost a $200 roll on Full Tilt on Black Friday, which was my entire stake. I know others lost thousands - I'm not complaining. I had withdrawn $2,500 in the two years leading up to Black Friday, and wasn't playing much at the time so had very little exposure.

For me, though, my poker role was gone with no easy way to play or get money online. So I gave up poker after Black Friday, and I missed it so much I couldn't even stand to log in to FTR. I have trolled once or twice, but just clicked away. I was so frustrated about not being able to play I couldn't stand to think about poker.

Gotta go work, but that's the short story. Good luck at the tables!!

I'm up 5 BI's at 4NL, and have lost 4 of 5 $2 HU SNG's. Not unhappy with the SNG's, as in each loss I've been all-in with the chip lead and the better odds, a couple of times dominating. That's just how HU works.

4NL is full of fish, including me, obviously. But a good half week reintroduction to pokerz.

Not using software, just 1 or 2 tables, notes, and trying to remember what works and what doesn't.

Don't know about this. I have never beaten the game consistently above 25nl, though I did break even at 50nl for 50k hands.

Just before Black Friday, I discovered HU SnG's. Until that point, I was a 6max NLHE cash game player who only rarely tried SnG's, MTT's and other games like Ohama, and then only for fun. So I'll be grinding HU SnG's and 6max 4NL and 10NL in the near term.

I really like the HU's now that they have them at the microstakes. I would caution folks who want to play them to double your br requirements before trying them. If you have 25 BI's as your br requirement for 5nl NLHE, I would suggest 50 BI's for $5 HU SnG's. But if you're rolled for 5nl, you are certainly rolled for $1 and $2 HU.

I think HU really helps you understand the post flop game. Or it did for me. I would say other folks like Daven, M2M, Keith, Stacks, Bikes and BJaust understood post flop far better than me at the micros, say, 10nl and 25nl. HU was where I learned to open up and read the game, adding different styles to my TAGG-std approach. Also, if there's one attribute I have aplenty, it's aggression. And HU rewards aggressive play.

So that's my goal at the moment: grind $2 HU's and 4nl 6max. I'm pretty excited about getting back to grinding, at least as a hobby player. I've missed poker. I have always loved the game, even when experiencing negative variance and losses due to sucking at poker.

And I enjoy the comraderie of FTR, especially watching the blogs and operation threads. You guys inspire me when you do well, so I root for you and wish you the best.

Downloaded PT4 beta. Pretty impressed. Don't know how use it, yet, or why certain tables don't load the HUD, but the stats and auto-notes are really cool.

Now, I've used PT4 for all of 10 minutes, so take this with a grain of salt, but it appears to note the implied 3b and 4b range for all hands where villain showed down. So you click on notes (for a player you haven't made any on), and it shows he 4bet with ATo and 3bet with 98s.

I would like to thank Keith, L_Clan_Superman and McStackn for staking me. The details and agreement are in this thread on the staking forum.

I've been embarrassed to say how little money I have online, since I believe in BR management and I was WAY under-rolled for even 4NL. I invested $25, ground it up to $44 in 10 days, and then transferred to it the stakers. I now have over a $100 on Black Chip Poker (Merge network), plus access to bonuses I can grind that, if I can just break even, will have me rolled for 10nl shortly.

It's a good deal. They get a nice return, and I get money transferred to a site that accepts US players but makes it rather hard to get an account funded. Plus the bonuses.

I feel better. Instead of playing with only 6 BI's at 4NL, I will be starting off with 26 BI's and a chance to grind it up with bonuses.

Getting everything worked out today, maybe grind some this evening.

I'm nuts. And I'm all-in. The twins turned 8 yesterday, and as part of the weekend's celebrations, I'm camping out in the back yard with them and the 5-year-old.

Life: the 5-yr-old folded preflop, so it was just me and the twins camping out after 9 PM. They slept until 6:15. I slept until 5, about normal for me, and came inside to grind pokers. By 6:30, they were whooping it up so loud out in the tent I think most of the neighborhood could hear them. Guess they had fun...

Poker: up just less than $5 this morning, on about 400 hands, 2-3 tabling 4NL. I could probably play more tables, but I would have to TAGG-reg autopilot them. I don't wanna do that, yet.

HU play has made me a much better postflop player and gotten me comfortable with a large variety of opening hands. Session stats say (when I'm at a full 6max talbe) that I'm playing 40/20 vpip/pfr which is fine right now. Overall I'm more like 55/30, but I'm starting tables and playing lots of HU and 3-way hands. The fish don't last long, and one way to play lots of fish is to be there when they join.

HU is high variance. I'm up more like $7 up playing 4-6 handed, and down $2.50 HU and 3-2 way, mostly because of a HU hand where I got AQ < AK all-in preflop against a Lagg-tard. I'd play AQ against his 3bet/call-the-shove range all day.

Lost a 125 BB stack when 89s < T4s. I flopped 2nd pair + FD, and jammed the turn when the flush hit. He insta-called. I've gone over that one, but I don't see any way I ever get away from that hand. He was certainly a bit fishy and laggy, though not completely brain dead.

So far, so good with the staking agreement. I want so badly to win, not just for personal satisfaction this time, but so that my backers get a good deal. I think it helps focus me and keep me playin' good or sittin' out.

Four years ago, we all agreed on FTR that whenever stacks were 20x, you could set mine profitably because lots of players would stack off with top pair hands. The game's nittier, now, and the TAGG-regs won't pay off sets.

The implication is that you need a read, right? If I read the posts in BC correctly, these days folks are saying that, "Who cares if the stacks are 20x, you're implied odds aren't enough to make calling with a small pp preflop profitable."

It doesn't mean we can't flat oop with small pp's, but there has to be some plan with the hand other than set mining.

I'm not certain of this. I'm just inferring from what I pick up from the better players on FTR as they critique hh's.

UTG is going to be opening a tight range UTG especially if a nit so he is more likely to be willing to stack off with those big hands than a lagg opening on the BTN. Then his range is full of trash so that even if you hit your set he is unlikely to have anything that he is willing to stack off with

A Lagg opening on the button is going to have a massively wide range , so is likely to have a high fold to 3bet.If you are sat in the blinds with a low PP and his fold to 3bet is high then you can 3bet and take down the pot. If he doesn't fold to 3bets you are likely to have to play 3streets OOP and end up folding so better then to fold preflop.

Yeah, it's villain-dependent, obviously, and the games have fewer of them as we move up. For right now, sets are getting paid off nicely at 4NL, too.

It doesn't seem to be the case at 5NL on my site either, but probably it will change at higher limits.
I base it on villain's info. There are a lot of villains willing to stack off with any pair/any draw.
With no info, I usually fold small PP from utg and utg+1.

Was grinding about half an hour tonight when I got dizzy. Had to play a couple of big hands whoozy, then sat out. Up a couple of dollars.

Felt like I was going to throw up at cross fit around lunch time, but I was nearly done with workout, eased up one set and finished. Haven't felt bad since about 3 PM, and even worked in the garden when I got home.

May try grindin' again in a few minutes.

Better. No dizziness after that incident. Got into several big hands vs. a FEESH later that evening and picked up a couple BI's. Up about 3.5 BI's in the last couple days.

setmining is interesting. The profitability of calling low pocket pairs and then abandoning any hope of winning the pot if you don't hit a set is very villain dependent. the closer your loss-rate to zero when called low pp = true and flopped set = false, the more interesting sets become. Float, anyone? etc

Yeah, that's something I'm realizing. You have a much better sense of your optimal flat/float range. I've been away from poker for a year. I know that range should be well-considered, but winning at 4NL doesn't require it. Seems like we could construct a range for (many villains at) 10NL or 25NL that wasn't exploitable, and was at least break-even (not counting sets). Then we could play some (most) of our pp's, even oop, and also hit the jackpot every now and again.

Should be able to grind a bunch this weekend, and looking forward to it. I wonder how I'm going to feel halfway through a six hour grind? Family's traveling to North Carolina, and I have to be in town for work.

Been grinding a good bit today, along with graduation events and our softball team winning their second game in the NCAA Div 2 playoffs. Another win tomorrow and they're at super-regionals, 2 wins from the D2 college softball world series for the fourth straight year.

Poker is still poker - some poor decisions, and some poor variance. I'm still winning at a decent rate, but it's harder than 4NL should be - or is it? We'll only know if I keep grinding and get some decent amount of hands in.

OK, so first full week of the stake, down half a dollar. Donked off some cash playing PLO and HU2's. In 6m 4NL, I'm running about 10 BB/100. That's slightly different than my staking thread post because I played some after posting.

So, I've been starting tables, joining lots of short-handed tables. Question: am I profitable doing it? Checked PT4, I'm running 17 BB/100 when super-short-handed.

So I guess the strategy going forward is obvious. Keep starting the tables and finding the fish. Keep grinding 6m, and ignore the other games for now.

Tilting is something I've been dealing with. I've always tilted a lot, but I got pretty good at controlling it quickly when it popped up. Sit out of tables for a bit after a bad beat. Some pushups or stretching. Quit playing if I'm stuck.

More generally, not tilting is about understanding variance, the good and the bad. After being back into poker for a couple of weeks, I'm having to regain that understanding. Stack off? No worries, just reload and play well. I'm not the biggest fish at the table, and if I keep thinking, keep solving problems, and keep folding, the wins will come. You have to let the card deadness go, the flop deadness, all of it. If you wait, the spots to barrel will start showing back up.

I think my tilt issues are patience-related. I know how often I should "flop good," how often someone should, based on the HUD stats, fold in certain spots. When I plan to bet/fold several times in a row in good spots, and have to fold to agression, I start to squirm. I think of it as spew, when it's not. Folding is NOT spewing. It's calling that would be.

I have to get back to the place where I understand the variance, keep picking good spots and keep folding.

Family's out of town, so I get to grind a bunch the next three days. I need to work 4-5 hours a day (tough life, right?), and do some work around the house for maybe two hours.

In my year off from poker, I took up gardening. I find it relaxing. Should help with tilt. Ton of fun to walk outside and see a bunch of vegetables growing well. I started my own pepper plants and some flowers indoors under grow lights, too. (Insert your juvenile weed jokes about the grow lights, here.)

Do I miss my family? Sure, but I'm making the most of the time I have batching it to get in some hands and make the house and yard look good.

Gotta go hydroponic bro. It's the only way.

Here's a graph using a filter for hands where the pot > 80 BB. Guess this makes me feel better. You can see the big ass tilt session starting about hand 130. The red line starts dipping first. I was getting run over and had to make some big laydowns, then tilted and spewed. Still, except for that session, I'm generally making good decisions in the big pots.

The small pots are break even, the medium 50 - 80 BB pots I'm down $13. Any ideas on what that means? I think the medium-sized pots are steady negatives because I'm avoiding bad spots to jam, and the small ball is break even because I'm stealing enough and avoiding trouble.

filter again adding vpip = true
then run similar filters but instead of absolute pot size do something that sorts by how many bbs you put in the pot

gardening is great. Where hipsters/hippies/farmers/depression era old people meet!

ok, w/ filtering done right:

• vpip = false, I'm down $25 ( - 27 BB / 100) over 2.3k hands
• vpip = true, hero committed < 25 BB to pot, I'm up $21.36 (28.2 BB / 100) over 1.9k hands
• vpip = true, hero committed 25-50 BB to pot, I'm down $3.21 over 90 hands
• vpip = true, hero committed > 50 BB to pot, I'm up $25.46 over 87 hands

Still I'm happy with the small ball, happy with the big pots, and not horribly behind in the medium pots.

Tough night. After posting above, I played 800 hands, down 2 BI. Just completely card dead, flop dead. Great deal of fish at the tables, all of whom pwn'd the shizzle out of me.

Played again after getting back from the bar, seeing off a friend who graduated and commissioned 2LT this weekend. Only had a beer, so I settled in for another grind, about 600 hands, up half a BI. Again, super-mega-retarded fish at all my tables, kept running into the nuts.

Didn't tilt. Had a wobble or two, but no spew-a-whirl tilt-fests.

looking at those stats above , it looks like you are running 45-50% VPIP. Is that solely a result of starting tables or are you tending to take the starting tables hand ranges to the full tables as well?
You should be able to filter by number of opponents to get your vpip, pfr ,3bet stats by number of opponents.

Something that can kill a session for me is starting a table and not leaving if the table sets up bad. If a couple of 52/6's or chronic 3bettors sit down to my left it behooves me to get up and start another table.

I also find that fish want to sit next to me (HU) so if I sit in the bottom left corner they'll almost always be on my right.

I start playing like the tables full when 4 seats are full (including mine). The other 2 seats usually fill up quick and by that time I'm usually HU on another table which is taking more of my attn.

I'm sure you've thought about these things a lot but they seem to work for me.

Couldn't sleep. Got in another 45 minutes 2-tabling HU and 3-way, up a BI when I quit around 4 AM. The guy I destroyed was min-stacking, ~ 30 BB's. He just shoveled the flop every so often, so I looked him with A5 > 22 and then, about 10 hands later, A7 > 22. That surely tilted him. The win with A7 was four clubs to my 7c, a flush. I don't feel too bad about winning with those coin flip hands. I would grind him down to 1/2 to 2/3 of his stack, then we'd be all in. I lost several fo those "small" all-ins I was dominating preflop or way ahead on the flop.

I think this is only somewhat caused by opening tables. I certainly play super-short-handed a ton, so that is skewing the results, a bit.

I try to adjust as folks join the table, tightening up as each new player sits down. I'm probably 80/55 (vpip/pfr) on the button HU, don't know BB because it depends on how much he limps. 3-way, I tighten up, as one player is often a complete unknown. 4-way, it depends. I'm still uber-loose compared to 6max, especially if I have good postflop reads on two of my opponents. I play standard once I'm facing 5 players.

@Keith, I will look up some preflop stats later today. I have been playing lots of hands. Be interesting to see, I guess. Hope my backers aren't too upset I'm playing laggy.

Filtered for 5-6 handed. By the way, the laggy approach is intentional, not just "spillover" from super-short-handed. I was a 18/15 6max TAGG-nit during my successful early runs at 10nl, 25nl and 50nl, but got crushed at 100nl by the 25/18's.

I originally started playing HU to work on my postflop reads so I could open a bit in 6max.

In the past two weeks, obviously, I have opened up a great deal, and in the next couple of days I was planning to sit down and work on some standard preflop ranges by position. Still, I feel like I need a more wide open game, maybe 30/22-ish, at 4NL and 10NL, tightening up as I move up. That was the goal.

I think the stats below (are not a very large sample but still) show my SB play needs tightening up a good bit, amongst other things.

Thoughts?

HU, I'm 85/75 BTN (11 BB/100), 61/16 BB (7 BB/100). 700 HH. Up $4.90.

3-way, I'm 78/70 BTN (30 BB/100), 65/37 SB ( -15 BB/100), 40/15 BB (16 BB/100). 575 HH. Up $4.90

4-way, I'm 66/53 BTN (55 BB/100), 44/38 CO ( -64 BB/100), 52/31 SB ( -3 BB/100), 41/17 BB ( -29 BB/100), 690 HH. Down $5.30.

So...tighten up more 4-way, like Supa said. Work on less laggy approach to full table 6max.

I'm seeing some positives here, though we all have to realize its tiny samples, variance, etc.

That was a profitable 11 min break, up a BI.

I worked out at the university gym at noon with a group of faculty and staff. It's cross-fit style workouts designed by our athletic department's strength and conditioning coach. Then lunch at the Chinese Buffet, now home for a shower and back to work.

one obvious thing i saw was how do you get 26/16 UTG . thats implying an 1/3 of the time you put money in UTg you are limping in .Its not even as if you are limp 3betting since UTG 3bet is 0. Then once you do see the flop you only cbet it 2/3 times with what should be your strongest range.
same applies to a certain extent for MP.

overall it looks like you are playing 37/24 ish on a full table, giving up a lot of initiative and playing lots of pots out of position.

Up above you said that playing tag worked up to 50nl. Why try and beat 100nl opponents strategy by playing 4nl opponents. 4nl players won't play like the villains that you are trying to devise a strategy to beat , they
wont fold, float, 3bet ,bluff anything like the 100nl players so how valuable is the strategy you are trying to get to work.

I appreciate the comments, Keith. I've never limped before in my poker career, so honestly was just trying it out. I got into several tables during long sessions where it was a massive limp-fest every hand, and I must have limped UTG 50 times in one 4 hour session late Saturday night.

Small sample skewed by a couple of sessions, I think.

What have I learned? I just can't limp. It's not in me. I just like throwing chips in and saying "I've gotta hand. Come along to value town." And I don't see any good way to take the initiative back, even with a 3bet, once I've limped. So, experiment over. No more EP limping.

I'll report back later on some preflop stuff I'm working on, some "default" ranges that I plan to use, trying to build a preflop profile that is positionally aware and overall about 30/23. I'll post those. I am capable of remembering what hands are on bubble for my ranges, and easing them in out of the range based upon my reads of villains' at the table. But you need some sort of baseline for doing it, or at least I do. Something better than "Ooooooooohhhh, let's gamboooooool!"

I think a wider range can be played aggressively and skillfully for a profit at 4NL and 10NL, with plans to tighten up a bit more for 25nl.

There were some positive things about my game two years ago, three years ago. But there were some negative things as well. I played like a robot and was inflexible, an agro donk. I only could barrel and 3bet and 4bet and shovel. I need to look for "value floats," rather than raising Villain off his hand. I need to get those extra 5 BB's into the small pots playing an extra street, sometimes passively, from position. My old habits were based on some primal urge to "win" by getting them to fold. My new habits need to be based on reading tough spots better than my opponents, and using the "check" and "call" buttons, too. I need to find "thin value" and the fold button, as in use the check/fold more often and the check/raise less.

That's what I'm trying to accomplish with the laggy 4NL right now. And as I said, I've done enough limping now to say I've given it a real go, and it's just not for me. Raisy Daisy. Except postflop, where I'm weak-tight and passive a good more than will probably be optimal. But I feel like I need to experiment with other aspects of poker so I can include them effectively in my game.

hammer the fish, whittle down their stack, by the time the nit at the table flops a set the fish is down to 9bb and you're laughing :) also, fish seem to have less trust of the guy who is in most of the pots. be that guy.

you limp and call more than is standard in a 'destroy dead money at the micros' gameplan. Doesn't mean it's necessarily bad, but it's definitely something you should think about. Once you have more data run a filter on vpip = true, pfr = false and run reports on types of hands (i.e. scs, s1gs, s2gs, Axs, small pairs, etc)

Agree completely. I mean, it seems that the last month or so 26-20 can definitely be played profitably at fullring 25nl-100nl, so it should win at 4nl 6-max...

very nice. Something to remember about thin value = if you aren't losing at showdown after your river value bets get called about (?) % of the time then you're missing a lot of value.

Note: in hand above, Villain was 70/30/0.8. It's hands like these that have me questioning the (short term) value of All-in EV (adj). You're playing against a range, and even though we got the money in behind, we're pretty stoked to play this line against this range all day for 50 BB.

Just had a 300 hand session, after working on my preflop. I ran 29/19 w/ 3b = 8%. I think that's right at my target.

Here's the work I did. These are the way I would default against an unknown. Reasons for loosening up: LP vs "steal from me" nits to my left, good read on someone I can outplay post (and position), a chance to play (even oop) against a cally-wally fish, limpers/stations to my right already involved. Reason for tightening up: Loose passive to my left, Loose-passive in blinds or super-agro 3bettor in blinds.

Hero's PFR Ranges:
UTG (11%): 88+,AJ+, ATs, KQ, 76s - T9s (half), small pp's (quarter)
MP (14%): 77+, AJ+, KJ+, ATs, 76s - JTs, small pp's (half)
CO (30%): 22+, A8+, Any 2 T+, K9s, Q9s, Axs, 65s - JTs, 97s - J9s
BTN (50%): 22+, ANy 2 8+, Ax, Kxs, 54s - 87s, 75s - 97s

I use my preflop cards to randomize the "half" and "quarter" combos above. Way too "fancy" for 4NL, right? Oh, well, it's practice for later, and may be -EV at 4NL. But not too much.

There's a ton of uncertainty in the blinds, but I was consciously tightening up. The BTN range seems pretty wide. May help to know I'm min-raising OTB, raising 2.75 BB MP/CO and raising 3.5 BB UTG. Steal success is right at 50%, which pays for itself, and playing a wide, weak range in position causes opponents at this level fits.

That's the plan for the next thousand hands. Thoughts?

Also, on Black Chip you start at "2 High" VP level, working up to "Ace High," with rakeback (trade in VP's for cash) kicking in at "7 High." I'm about 1/3 the volume needed (lifetime) to get to "7 High." At this rate, I will have achieved rakeback well before the bonus ends. Obviously, would love to move on up so that I get more than the starting level 15% rakeback.

The lifetime format is perfect for me. As long as you play at least one hand every 60 days, your VP's don't deteriorate. I get plenty of volume per year, but rarely can sustain volume per month as needed, for example, on Full Tilt a couple years ago.

I'm loving the PT4 HUD, and will defo buy it when the open beta concludes. I use the Merge icons to tag villains, and those show up in the lobby. I can immediately tell how fishy a table is and see if the seat I get is good or bad based on the known players at the table. There's plenty of fish every hour of the day, with 11PM - 3AM (Eastern US) agro-fishy and best, 5PM - 10PM tight-passive fishy, and every other hour seemingly loose passive fishy. Plenty of tables even at the nano's to bum hunt.

Starting tables rocks. It's high variance, but I have a nice game plan and can alter it to fit my opponents. Usually, the plan is to out-LAGG them with small ball and hope for a big hand to stack them once they've lost all respect for me. If they let me steal/cbet enough, I can "finance" my shots at the big pots, making the big laydowns and jamming when I look to be ahead. If they can LAGG it up with me, well, it's high variance, but it's what HU is all about. Still gets my heart rate up and the adrenaline pumping. Love that bare-knuckle brawl feeling to agro-donk HU play.

That's fun, when you see someone post a hand in the BC that you played against them, and they're like "I know he's full of sh*t here at least half the time - he's a total donk-fish-tard..."

Speaking of brain freezes, I accidentally played 3 hands of 10NL this afternoon. I am in technical violation of my staking agreement. I misclicked and joined a 10NL table along with 3 4NL tables. Should have realized it when it asked for a bigger buy-in than normal, but I was up big on a couple of tables, then sat out, then rejoined. So I thought it was a 4NL where I had been running good.

I paid the BB, SB, folding both hands, and folded the BTN when I saw the blinds and thought, "Oh, crap, you bonehead!" Left table immediately.

So the "driving the wrong way on a one-way street" isn't all that out of line for brain freezes today. In my defense, the town I live in has about 4k year-round residents, half a dozen stop lights, and like three one-way streets that are one-way for about a block each. It's not Chicago or New York where every freakin' street downtown is one-way.

Re: playing 30/22. It's taken me a while to figure out that playing too laggy at the fishy micro games on Cake is a mistake but taggin' it up a bit seems like it's better there. Merge is obv not quite as fishy and it may work better there. It seems like playing with that wide of a calling range is a mistake though. We still have initiative in these games whether the fish understand it or not. I think we also have a ton more fold equity in bigger pots HU or 3way than in small pots with multiple callers.

*edit* Meant to say you obv have a better understanding of ranges than me so laggy should work better for you.

Lost 1BI Wednesday and 3 BI Thursday, didn't play yesterday until late, picked up 3/4 BI and went to bed.

Why did I lose 4 BI? Of course, the reason is (as everyone expected) that I was playing wide/weak ranges in almost every spot. But I wanted to find the cause. Why was my laggy game working fine a week ago but was off the rails last two nights?

The realization hit me yesterday while gardening. I started out playing the laggy ranges on tables of uknowns, or "slightly knowns" gleaned from table starting. The site is still dominated by TAGG wannabe's and post-flop weak tighties. So my laggy approach was fine (maybe not best, admittedly, but fine).

As I've got the HUD optimized and worked on table selection, I focused on the fish (65/15's), the maniacs (45/35's), and the LAGG's (35/25's). I try to sit down with position on a couple, leaving TAGG wannabe's on my left.

I suspect everyone but me foresaw the problem: now I'm on loose, action-filled tables which are absolutely PERFECT for a TAGG approach, and I'm not playing TAGG-std poker. I'm ldo if you want to play laggy, table select to find nits, TAGG wannabes and weak-tighties. If you're table selecting laggy, why not open a small strong range of hands and camp on the nuts? Only open up when (if?) you stop getting action.

So I've learned some things this week:

• Play the game you've table-selected for, dumbass!
• Reversing, I can table-select for the game I want to practice.
• I'm very much aiming at mid 20's vpip, not 28+
• I need to work on calling ranges.
• I am still (relative to my opponent's) very good HU, and need to focus on that rather than "volume" during sessions, especially where I'm running bad. Go with what works.

A few observations about my learning process in the coming weeks:

1. Frustrating that FTR has devolved to the point where folks will say "fold pre/ldo he hazz a King" when you post a J9o btn flat HH in the BC, but when you ask for help on preflop flatting ranges, the thread goes silent. We used to have experienced players who would explain their reasoning. I wonder if the new era of one-liners has been ushered in by a general lack of friendliness I also notice in the BC lately. Bashing seems routine, not quite flaming, but "tough love" certainly.
2. Certain players I respect are disrespected these days on FTR. I can mention half a dozen, but I'll just mention Spoon. WTF? He was an ass, but he always willing to explain his reasoning and help others. But now he's gone? Wonder what happened? And now his advice is disrespected, too? WTFF?
3. Since I can't get help in the BC, I went elsewhere and worked a ton on my own, especially about flatting ip and from the blinds. I will report some of what find over the coming days. Also, this "equity" idea is often bullshit. Just because you have equity doesn't necessarily mean you have playable hand.
4. I got tons of help from Keith who typed up some notes from some things he's been working on during a mini-challenge where he's playing the nano's for a while. I appreciate his help, but (unfortunately for me learning when and how to flat/float), his notes focus more on aggression.

And a bit of a rant:

Sometimes, I'm a real dumbass, I admit it. But I am tired of "poker platitudes." I've seen so many different styles work, from nitty to laggy, and work over tons of hands. I've decided I'm going to take what I know and what I feel I do best, and experiment like crazy and do the maths and work on ranges and villain profiles and get my HUD in order, and I'm going to put together a game of Robb-poker, combo by combo (Shania?), position by position, merged range by polarized range. I'm going to do it at the nano's and improve it by tweaking it as I move up.

I don't give a flying furry what people think. I've been inhibited about what to post and how to play for too damn long. It doesn't matter if anyone on FTR or in the BC is impressed with me, it just matters if I win and know why the hell it's happening, so I can fix the problem(s) when I'm losing. I want a flexible game that can open up or tighten up when needed, and understand how to use all aspects of game play to win more: aggression, passivity, table selection, villain profiling, table starting, not tilting, br management - the whole deal.

There's a problem with being a BC-trained robot, with a TAGG-std game you don't understand because you've never properly studied, and the problem is that you get up around 25nl/50nl and you can no longer beat the games you're playing in. That's not gonna be me.

When I get to 25nl again, I'm gonna be there strong, winning and wise.
