Guys I was wondering if you could help me with some workout bizzle
I've just bought a set of screwlock dumbells as I realised that summer was coming and I had the body of a parsnip, and I don't know what I'm doing. Exercise has never really done it for me.
The main part of me I want to improve is my chest as I've got very little there. I'm aiming more for looks than strength, although the latter is always good.
I'm a skinny high metabolism guy with pretty wide shoulders for my size but fairly small arms and a really nothingy chest.
I don't have a bench and my living area is pretty confined.
So how does this shit work? Should I just do the exercises that concentrate on my chest or should I look at doing an all-round workout? Are you just meant to do reps until you can't do them anymore or are you meant to come up with a specific plan? Is it burn that builds muscle?
If there's a specific thread for this let me know

Ash, can you not get a gym membership? You'd be making a big mistake to not try to use the right equipment for the full effort
I guarantee that if you try to just do dumbbell or some bodyweight workouts on isolated portions of your body you will get bored in no time and give it up. Also, it is common to think that one body part needs improvement or that strength is different than muscle hypertrophy, but it doesn't really work that way
If you wanna improve your physique for the summer you want a comprehensive plan. If you stray from that you'll either make a little progress and look like a tard then quit, or make no progress and quit faster
If you can't do a proper gym, you can still get a lot of what you need, it's just both more difficult and boring

"skinny guy with high metabolism" means you are not a man and do not know how to eat food, it's that simple.
You need to find a way to lift heavy ass weights, stuff your face, and focus on more than just your chest. You really need to find a way to get to a gym, but if you cannot, the one site I send people to is rosstraining.com. Also, "focusing on my body moreso than strength" is another common misconception. You think they guys you want to look like aren't strong? They are, and you aren't going to look like them by doing 5 sets of 20 reps of little ass weight.

However, you have to eat a shit load. If you are like me, then your body will burn 2000+ calories/day just sitting on your ass playing poker all day. So if you are going to start working out lots, then you will be burning even more calories. Basically, you will have to be eating close to 3500 calories a day to see any reasonable gains, which is not easy at all imo.
I'll go like a month eating 3500 calories a day and gain 5lbs or so, then get lazy and lose all 5 lbs the next month. Eating that much is just a pain in the ass after a while.

There are a ton of things you can do to up your calories and gain some weight/muscle. Start talking to someone that knows what they are talking about, even if you need to pay a trainer. Don't talk to a nutritionist, but someone who knows about fitness and nutrition.
I could get a great workout at home with just dumbbells, but not for a long term solution, but I also know 5 or 6 ways to work out different muscles of the legs with just dumbbells as well. The home workouts will give you a good start but 3 months in you will be done, either by doing all you can do or giving up because nothing is happening.
all the space you need at home is room for a power rack, you can squat, press, bench press, deadlift, clean, row, do pull/chin-ups, etc... all with in the rack.
A decent used rack would cost $300, a good used bar plus enough olympic weights to allow for sufficient progression would probably cost around there as well. If you join a gym this investment will probably take a few years to turn a profit but you get to avoid all the douchebaggery that goes on at the gym.
I agree he could find some program with dumbbells that might last him a few months, but for some skinny noob nothing is going to be better than a barbell strength training program. There are so many people training like they have intermediate/advanced recovery issues when they are really at the other end of the spectrum.
Yeah a barbell is the way if you are doing it at home.
I got told that to add muscle you should do 10 reps per set, 3 sets per session, 3 sessions per week, as a weight that begins to get really tough by the last two reps. When you can get to 12 reps before discomfort, increase the weight. Focus on 2 or 3 areas per session.
Few reps - high weight builds muscle, high reps - low weight burns calories.
And remember the golden rule:-
Pain is weakness leaving the body!
(Caveat: The last line is the only bit I'm sure is true)

but you can not deny that it is much simpler for others with "better" genetics to put on mass than others with poor genetics. i agree that it can be overblown and used as an excuse or reason to back out, but it certainly has some effect on your results. there is just no way i could ever become an arnold.
