I was mainly confused about who the fuck Marcus Garvey was, pardon my ignorance. Apparently he does not (yet) appear on the show? Or have I missed something...

On the Narcisse front, I'm glad he's not just a one-season-and-done character. I'm actually quite sick of the one-season arc format that's been trending lately, where the board is wiped essentially clean after each season and you start out with a whole new set of antagonists in the next (see: Dexter, thank god that shit is over).

Marcus Garvey is a historic figure, pennywize. I'd guess that most Americans watching this show at least know the name. So that's probably why they didn't feel the need to force dialogue that gave a rundown on who he is.

Really? That's actually really surprising. But maybe it shouldn't be? It's probably only in the big cities in the northeast along with Chicago that we have public schools, libraries, streets, etc named after him.

Yeah it may be a Yankee thing. I was taught next to nothing about prohibition era, and the only historical black figures I remember are MLK, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman

I don't want to get too much into the history, because I'm not if they'll go in this direction-- so no specifics just giving a little scope on what they've touched on on-screen.

Pretty much, if it weren't for J. Edgar Hoover, there's a good chance we would never have known who MLK, Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and the other well known 60's civil rights leaders were-- but in a good way. There was a civil rights movement in it's infancy decades before the 60's, but was drastically set back by Hoover and his view that they were race agitators.

That actually gives the writers a ton of original material to cover. Black issues already have a play in the show unlike any others I've seen, and they could get really deep into that if they spend time on the civil rights movement before the Civil Rights movement

I've recordede the whole season 4, and will be starting to watch it soon. So, better not look here anymore. I just love BE :)

I was a bit perturbed when they announced this was the last season-- but honestly, I think it is for the best. Why not go out on top? Sure there are infinite stories to tell, and the show could cover another decade of material, but the overall piece would lose focus, and that's a real concern for something with such a broad scope.

Yeah, the flashbacks and scenes with his ex-wife don't do much for me.

I like the flashbacks. I'm sure their purpose is to round out the Nucky story, which I think is the right thing to do since the creator bailed on what should have been many more seasons. The show can't get epic like BB did, but it can achieve full development and closure of Nuck. I'm guessing the flashbacks are serving the purpose of showing how Nuck became so ruthless and probably also literary symmetry (like in the penultimate, maybe he'll be complicit in his dad dying in the flashbacks while in real time he's also complicit in Eli dying)

His dad was alive, on screen, in a previous season. So I don't think he'll be dying in nucky-is-a-boy flashbacks. Or did I misunderstand you?

I feel like Doyle is a prop this season-- at least so far. Like, everyone loves him, and that's why the writers kept him around, but now they know this is the last season, he never got offed, so they have to give him some screen time so they just use him for some cheap levity. I still am pleased when he's on screen, cuz he's just that good, but nonetheless it feels a bit forced.

Weird episode. I don't understand why Sally went out like that. Was there an underlying subtext that she was going to be killed whether she resisted or not and I missed that? Either way it seems like plotting that was much too neat.

Capone territory was awesome of course.

I think the idea was to show the revolution in action, but not dedicate a huge budget to it, and give some exposition on what the revolution was all about and how it affects our characters. Also, the Sally in Cuba arc wasn't really going anywhere with this being the final season and having a fairly prominent character get got in the Cuban revolution gives it some weight.

And yeah, the Chicago stuff is amazing. He was great as Tommy, but it's hard to believe it's the same actor playing Capone. That may be the saddest part about the show ending-- Stephen Graham won't be Capone anymore, and I'm really doubtful his portrayal will ever been topped.

Weird episode lol. If I have a criticism its that there are too many unsuccessful attempts on nucky's life in this show. I don't think we needed the drive-by to make the point that Charlie and Meyer are after Nucky.

Not happy with chalky's choice to die. Also, it is hard to guess what nucky is thinking right now.

This is gonna be the strangest ending of a drama series. Nucky is such a weirdly everyman figure, not really a hero or anti-hero. I suspect that with the short-selling he's gonna get some sort of token financial revenge on Charlie/Meyer in the same way that he did on Rothstein in season 3, and he's just gonna have some sort of poignant scene with Gillian, the end. I really don't see what kind of crazy gangster shit is in the pipe to happen at this point, especially since Charlie ,Meyer, and Benny are armored by history.

Yeah, this is my read as well. My guess is that we get some sort of montage or equivalently brief but informative visit with the new kings of New York, but nothing more.

If we somehow go out with a boom, fine, but I'm ready for, and will be completely satisfied with an ending akin to The Wire. The shock series finale has to be one of the most overplayed hands in television drama. Mellow can be good.

I think there were some flaws in the execution of this season as a whole but what a great series and great episode. So many discordant character threads paid off. I've never seen a single character boiled down to what's important like they did with Nucky this season with the flashbacks. Why did Gillian stick around after she'd well worn out her welcome? This season gives us the reason. What are with these cumbersome flashbacks? Wait a while and you'll see. The flashbacks were so great because they gave such greater depth to shit that I'd long since disregarded or forgotten about. I actually want to watch again from season one with my newly-colored perspective on Nucky's motivations and knowing how doomed the Darmody family was from day zero.

Hard to believe it's over.

Really well put, pretty much exactly how I feel. Gillian's arc paid off huge. And I'm so glad the writers had the restraint to show their final meeting, but not have her be saved. Sure Nucky tossed her a sympathy package, but despite holding out for so long, she was finally broken by that twisted place. Lesser writers would have given the viewer a soft sappy landing.

This ending was perfectly executed. Yes, there was more story to tell for sure, but we'd probably just end up with more aberrations like season 3, which really just brought us back where we started in terms of the main plot. Don't get me wrong, it was a good season, but it just had that Dexter-esque one-off feel to it.

FWIW I had paid little mind to Tommy throughout this season and was suitably surprised when he revealed his identity. But then again I'm a fucking idiot, so.
