with winning in mind - poker 2010

meh so far in september. I'm up about $400 for the month after including rakeback and some random bonus.
My headspace has been all over the place. Results too. Has been that way since the two weeks i took off in August. And in two more weeks i'll be off poker for ages cos i'm not taking my laptop to Asia.

My major problem at the moment is an apparent inability to play well consistently. Obviously i have other leaks, but that's the most important one for the moment. I'll figure it out somehow.

edit - the simple act of writing about playing well is helping me to play well. Got another $50 bonus out of the blue, this time from stars for 3k fpps, i don't know how i even have 3k fpps on stars - but i'll take the free money. Managed to scrape into the money in the FTR ironman freeroll. Another $50. Up about $650 for the month now

I decided to get a flatmate for my loft heaven - she moved in at the weekend and it's working out great. Photos of my new abode in the sunny skies below. Spring is in the air, and i'm off to thailand shortly for a few weeks of cliimbing before summer all over again! Life feels good. Poker is starting to make sense again too.

I played a session at 10nl last night. This is important, as i've decided (again) to play a stake or two lower if i have any anticipation of being unable to play my a-game. So i ran 4bi below ev, KK<AA, AA<TT vs set in 3b pot all in one session - and i played poorly. And it cost me less than 2 normal buyins :)

today i played a normal session and played really well mostof it - up 4bi in the aiev record, shame i ran bad but i'm not too stressed about that. I'm fairly comfortable that swings don't really exist, and that ev averages out just fine. During the session I also finally used some of my ftp points (6k of my 1.1 mill) to play one of the mini-ftops. Busted just shy of the bubble (bubble = 1890, i was like 2200 out of the 15k runners i think?) when i got my m= 9ish stack allin pre with QQ vs AK and didn't win the flip. No problem with that, i'd coolered someone earlier and won a flip already to knock someone out ;)

On the 77 hand, I think either a call or raising more on the flop is better. Raising so small tips the strength of your hand a bit.

as for folding top pair, reads are key buddy! i folded 3 overpairs in my last (under 2k hands) session. Hell, one of them was AA in a 3bet pot!

That last hand... It was probably the last of his roll or something. To be fair, he bet a super scary card if we don't have a boat or a flush there.

See?! i learned something! those few minutes it would have taken to find it, post it, etc. are gonna be spent either getting better at poker or enjoying life.

Today I saw that a seasonal beer that i have a lot of history with has just been re-released (must have happened while i was in asia?), so I grabbed a box. It's called monteith's summer ale and it's basically a malted ginger beer with honey overtones and some body. And it's tasty on a warm early afternoon like this one, or during summer bbqs. My local favourite brewery has also just released an interesting looking new wheat beer so i'll grab some of that shortly. Tonight we're bbq-ing up some goodness at my girlfriend's place - we don't live together cos it's cool to both have access to a studio/loft in the centre of town AND a chill out house and garden at the beach. Tonight it's beach house time! Think i'll head out there mid-afternoon and walk down to the water to get a few waves as the tide drops and hopefully things start to get just a little steep and hollow, it's apparently 3ft rising and light offshore right now!

funky morning session. Think i lost a few buyins? - must have cos it's hard to make up for losing a bunch of stacks during 1k hands. Got it in pretty damn good mostly ;) Played ok. Ran a couple of interesting lines in medium pot hands. Bluff sizing that has to work like 30% makes for interesting confusion, like trying to figure out if i'm betting as thin value or bluff cos villain's calling ranges are weird, and then winning at showdown with ace high.
My mental state re poker is definitely improving. Key is having complete understanding/realisation that pots where you lose a bunch of $$ because of playing badly are very important. Hands where you play badly are all incredibly important. Avoiding bad plays is all about figuring out ranges, considering available options, identifying the decision you like, then sticking with that fucking decision. Pots where you get bad-beat/coolered and are generally happy with the line taken don't matter much at all. It's fucking cool that the important aspects of winning at poker are very much within the sphere we have control over! Variance happens, that's less important, so why spend time focusing on it.

an example of the type of hand that matters:

villain is loose passive, like 20-4 or something. Station. Bad. Good player to have at the table. Easy to play against.

ok, this raise is marginal, but button has AK/AQ in his range even after the raise and he is likely to station his stack away over the next two streets with these hands once he calls. Important decision, think about it, act.

ok, now life is easy. He beats AK. No question. What is the worst hand that beats AK here? A2. So. We have A2. We split vs the bottom of his range (AA/A7/A2/77/22) and lose vs everything else. Making a mistake here is the sort of important decision i was talking about.

You have 40% equity vs AA,77,22,AKs,A7s,A2s,AKo,A7o,A2o. You're equity improves if you take out A2o & A7o, as well as if you add AQ. I think your actual equity here is prob 3 or 4 % higher since I don't think he's flatting A7o or A2o the same % OTB as his suited Aces. My guess is you have like 43% equity when he 4B's flop.

I wouldn't hesitate to shove over if we had 100BB's, but you're slightly deeper which might make a difference.

You have 0 FE, so the math of shoving over is:

you're risking $26.10 more to potentially win $64.71, so you need 40% equity.

Obv if he can't have AK you should just fold since you're equity drops into the crapper, but in the long run I don't think it matters too too much which way you go here, since I actually think he plays AK like this a good amount of the time.

I play it exactly the same way - sizing and all, and fold to the 4b. This is some Ax so often, and he's just raising to see where he's at or whatever, but won't be able to fold to a small 3b and continue to stack off. I think raising will make him play face up and calling will put you in a tough spot on turn and river.
When he 4b ships it I think he has a set or A7, A2 all the time.

surf wasn't so great cos the wind had turned onshore and it was all a bit messy. I'd forgotten that the water would be cold and hadn't taken booties, gloves, or a hood. Was fun to be paddling around again tho, icecream headaches and all! FYI and local water temperature of 11.7 degrees celsius (about 55 farenheit?) is about right for the occasional flash of an icecream headache

bbq was awesome, especially the tasty venison courtesy of someone with a gun! sat around a fire until late-ish when all the beer had been drunk and it was time for bet. The seasonal beer got drunk pretty quickly, the new wheat beer is ok - not their best work tho.

Focus is beautiful. I'm enjoying poker. Running pretty bad and winning at a low rate so far - but feeling good about my game and my control is progressing as i want it to be. Clearing the $600 bonus could take most of the month unless i move up or add a few tables, but that's fine.

I always think when you're running bad its good to just not lose much, so if you're winning at a low rate, thats ahead of expectations. You should feel pretty good.

yeah, you're right - cheers dude.
Still not running great, but i'm starting to play well more often. I've taken > 2 seconds for a whole heap of decisions this month, typically it would have been once every coupla thousand hands when faced with a big all-in decision that i'd inevitably call.

I've hit the 15k mark in hands played at 25nl since i started up again and i'm up some $ at the tables, plus cleared some bonus. Things are going just fine. Will move to 50nl shortly.

Just read "almost there" pretty sick post. nh. (would like to add but dont hate me ftr) 2+2 has sick good posts. FTR has good stuff but hasn't had any new stuff for quite some time. i was feeling kinda jaded flu symptomy tired last two days. Day 1 i studied a bunch and played a few micro-donkaments. Day 2 i decided to play poker, but dropped even further down cos i knew a-game was unlikely. I decided to experiment with a few things i've been thinking about recently, it showed me that people still like to call exploitably often = river bluff raises aren't necessarily that smart. I also played a couple more mtts - got knocked out of a plo-rush-rebuy near the bubble with a pretty deep stack when i 3b AAKQtt and snap 5b shoved vs a KK73 one suit 4b. Heaps of fun ;)

i'm pretty happy that i'm getting better at avoiding grinding when i shouldn't = knocking off a layer of my c-game can only be net-profitable...

Loved listening daven. History Repeating is the shit. The rest isn't stuff I'd normally listen to but it's cool go out of my usual boundries. life's pretty cool. Summer is great. I'm fit, i'm healthy, i'm psyched. Climbing in Thailand was fun, onsighting the flavour of the trip. had a cool night out at the beach last night. Riding out and then riding back in this morning pointed out that my bike fitness has deteriorated from back when i was riding an hour + most days. Some lycra type even passed me this morning. And I don't think I even had a choice in the matter...

So, anyway. Poker. I sat in front of my computer. Logged into FTP. Looked at the tables. Noted that games look phenomenally good, like, even better than normal. Started going through my pre-grind routine. Realised that i'm not feeling sharp, for whatever reason. Thought, 'fuck it, i'll just grind it out. It's criminal to leave the free money lying there'. Thought better of it. Logged out of FTP without a hand being played. This session is one of my most important of 2010.

kinda. I have a spreadsheet i fill in with session details before a session begins, including ticking that i have water available and quickly describing mental state. So, if i'm tired i write that down, etc. Seems to be a very direct correlation between losing sessions and tired/caffeinated/not psyched type of comments. I also take a look at some basic poker mantras - the sort of thing that heaps of players stick to their monitors

I say move up with a stop loss, 4bi's that way if it doesn't work out you can move back down and rebuild your cheat refunds and you'll have regained your ground :)

isn't it more profitable to just buy bonuses with your iron man medals? Or are the donkaments soft enough to make that more worthwhile? Or, maybe, you've got plenty of bonuses to grind and took the shots at freerolls for a while? Just curious.

i can get 100 medals or a freeroll entry when i reach ironman end of month (in addition to the 900 i already get for reaching ironman).

ironman medal bonuses are $600 for 3k medals, so 100 medals are worth $20 in those terms.
ironman freeroll is $30k with around 600 runners and pays about 1/3 of the field. so worth $50. But then consider that maybe 25% of people registered in the tourney are no-shows. Plus i like the idea that i'll win it one of these days. This time i went out on a flip in the last 50-ish with a stack just below average. Next time.... sound like a gambler?

another 6bi day, way behind on AIEV for the sessions too, and wrong end of set over sets a couple of times. Fun and games.

i played what felt like the best poker session i've ever played just now. I made a lot of considered decisions. That's pretty cool. Unfortunately my considered decisions didn't really put TT in some lag's limp call range, nor KK and i got the wrong end of set under set twice. I didn't do so well in flips either, see below (down a few more bi on the lolaiev). But, doesn't matter. Cos i still ended up a couple of bi ahead. And if i can consistently play that well then, not sure really, guess i'll find out...

was an idea about gearing in small scale wind energy production turbines, problem was that i didn't really understand the huge energy losses involved in each step up-step down stage so it was too inefficient to be useful.
