HOOOOLY CRAP. Talk about taking gigantic leaps backward. The defense wasn't all that much to write home about last year and they've done...what?...exactly to improve it?
Meanwhile, they're destroying the thing that let them win several games last year.
Season win total is going to come out at like 5...and people would be smart to take the under. This is crazy ridiculous; what is going on out there?!?!?!

The last thing Detroit needs right now is a high pick, massive salary QB. Detroit has more holes in its lineup than swiss cheese.
So, where do you go to actually make the Lions a contender (without hope and dreams and bullshit)?
1) build the line. Both offense and defense.
2) get linebackers. tons of linebackers.
3) bolster the secondary with good quick guys with some play recognition abilities.
4) find a thunder and lightning combination for the backfield
5) a good pass catching TE (Assuming Calvin Johnson is still with the team by then)
6) OL maintenance, and now you look for a QB.
By drafting a "good" QB as a high pick now, all you will end up with is the next Alex Smith or Dan Orlovsky, who has to run for his life and have routine stops on the DL because his line is as porous as Spain's border. There is simply no pocket, and opposing defenses will continue feasting week after week with Detroit QB's.
So, DET mgmt, BUILD THE FUCKING LINES!
My advice, pick Jason Smith first and pray to god he does not become the next Robert Gallery. But since dire help is needed, trading #1 for like a late #1 & #2 & probably a #5 or something would be probably the most optimal thing DET could do right now.
I don't think any team in the NFL really wants that #1 pick, to be completely honest with you...Quote:

yah imagine if your number 2, knowing number one is taking a QB (a position you're sured-up on) and they dont pick? Im not fcking picking to spend an xtra 10 mil on a player.
Steve McNair, Favre and now Cutler, Bus Cook is an A-hole, this is completely his M.O.
Unfortunately for the front office they can't do this, as they have to worry about embarrassment, job security, death threats, etc.Quote:

It's not only about the money, which speaks for itself, it's about this specific draft. There's just nobody that sticks out from the crowd IMO.
Favre and Cutler, sure. Don't throw McNair in there though; that one was completely on the Titans. You can't lock a player out of the facility for no other than to squat on their rights and not have to pay them their salary if they get hurt. That was ridiculous.Quote:

Also, we have a ton of draft picks including 5 total picks in the first three rounds and 3 of the first 33 overall picks. So even if we take Stafford #1, we still have plenty of picks to build our lines and our defense.
To everyone saying the Lions should try to move down: this is such an obvious statement and it's putting me on tilt hearing people say it over and over again. The Lions have already said they were shopping the #1 pick, unfortunately, no team is dumb enough to actually want to get the #1 pick this year. The Lions picked a bad year to go 0-16 since the top end of talent this year is pretty mediocre compared to other years.
Also, I'm so glad that we didn't get Culter after seeing what the Bears paid for him.
why is there ZERO uproar about the price the Chiefs got for Cassell compared to the epic price the Bears just paid?
Cuz no one what the Chiefs do?Quote:

His contract is 1 year for 15 million (i.e. not very favorable). I believe Cutler is signed for 3 more years at very low salaries. So all and all, it's just a different situation.

Maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised if Denver just goes into this season with Orton and Simms and goes after a QB in next year's much stronger QB draft (if necessary). Browns fans are clamoring for a 12+18 for our 5 trade. I can only use the phrase "get real" so much though, as obviously that isn't going to happen.Quote:

I still think the Titans were at fault in that situation. What specifically did McNair (or his agent) do wrong there? It's not fair to lock a player out of the facility for no reason until training camp or preseason or the regular season, whatever the case may be, just to devalue the player or try to build up trade leverage. McNair filed a grievance and won, so at least somebody agrees with me. Typically grievances that don't directly have to do with signing bonus/roster bonus recovery are won by the team.Quote:

rilla, you make me chuckles. We still have a little problem called the D-Line. 4-3, 3-4, whatevs. Both are problematic for this front 7. While I appreciate your enthusiasm, those of us that have to go to Arrowhead and watch the team get bludgeoned for 8 weeks are a tad more realistic. We do have some very workable parts, but 2nd best D in the AFC, errr no.
We need that big DT that we have been looking for ever since the Neil Smith/Dan Saleaumua days no matter what alignment we end up in.
IMO, we should just take the best available OL, use up whatever Larry Johnson has left in the tank and road grade our way to 9-7 this year.
Odds LJ is still on this team by the time this post is replied to: Even money
well I guess we are taking Stafford.....gay

we'll consider it an extension of all my other nfl threads though.
so I'm looking at the eagles and they have a really sick and young team.
o-line:
Jason Peters 27
Max Jean-Gilles 25
Jamaal Jackson 28
Shawn Andrews 26
Stacy Andrews 27
Winston Justice doesn't even start, that should tell you something.
Juqua Parker 30
Mike Patterson 25
Brodrick Bunkley 25
Trent Cole 26
Asante Samuel 28
All the starting LBs are 25 or younger and the rest of the D (which was probably 3rd best in the NFL last year) is pretty young as well.
Plus, don't they have like 10 draft picks still, including their first rounder? The Jason Peters trade seems like a steal to me.
As long as Andy Reid's heart doesn't explode, I think they are going to be my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
That he allowed allowed six sacks in his first start... :oQuote:

was that the game against Osi and the Giants? If so, sick sick way to start off your career. I just remember being high on the guy coming out of college and wanting the browns to nab him in round 2.
you have to agree that's a nasty o-line though. i'd love to run behind it...

True, but the guy was a beast 2 years ago when he made the pro bowl and he fits the mold that the eagles are building on the O-line. The eagles did pay a pretty steep price but trading good starting left tackles is unheard of... like I cannot recall a single example besides this of it ever happening. I guess Peters contract BS and perhaps lack of effort are going to pay off for the Iggles.. only time will tell.
They are still stocked on draft picks.. such is the advantage when you stockpile picks instead of trading them all away like the Browns up until this year.
I think Pettigrew will be long gone by 21. Knowshon Moreno would be an awesome fit but he'll probably be gone as well. I like Brown as well. Then again Westbrook probably still has a few good years left so maybe they'll probably just go BPA and pick up a RB later. I can't wait for draft day though, it's always fun.
The only left tackle that was traded with a lot of gas left in the tank that I can recall is Willie Roaf. I think there was some concern about injury at the time of his trade, but he was dominant for four straight seasons in KC. But you're right, it's definitely rare.Quote:

*edited title to include any draft talk... i dont' know if i'll be sober enough to post anything mid-draft, but if I feel so compelled putting it here will help prevent things from getting spread out.
GOOD GODDAMN, I love the draft!!
Lorenzo Booker was a bust. Played a lot early in the season but couldn't run, catch or block. Eagles definitely need another RB, Westbrook isn't young or durable enough to be an every down back. I'd be shocked if they don't take an RB with their remaining 1st round pick and not at all surprised if they trade up in the 1st to get Moreno. TE is another need, but Brent Celek isn't that bad actually. Good hands but needs to improve his blocking. I think they'll wait until round 2 or 3 for a TE. All Philly fans desperately want Boldin or Braylon, but I'm done whining for a #1 WR. The Eagles offense is best when McNabb spreads the ball around and between DeSean, Kevin Curtis, Westbrook, Celek, Reggie Brown and Jason Avant he has plenty of targets. I'm a little worried about the safety situation with Quentin Demps trying to fill some huge shoes, but the rest of their secondary is so good it may not matter.
so I was at the gym yesterday (rah rah) and naturally i started talking about the draft with somebody. he isn't my first choice, but i like Andre Smith and wouldn't be upset if the Browns took him, combine disaster notwithstanding. he says he wouldn't mind getting him if he falls to the second, i laughed and guaranteed he'd be picked in the top 10. he disagreed.
seriously though, his combine fiasco IS a concern. but every year mock 'experts' and talking heads on TV always yell about workout warriors and enthusiastically say "watch the tape!" (mind you, almost none of them have actually watched any significant tape, which is why they work for TV or the newspaper and not an NFL team, but I digress), well this guy is the exact opposite. the guy dominated at alabama.
oh, and the out of shape fat guy ran better than most of the guys that were IN shape.
my first 2 choices are crabtree and curry, by the way. not sure after that, but I think one of those two will be on the board most likely.
Braylon will cost at least a 1 and 3 and a likely a new contract as well. Boldin similar.Quote:

The Eagles and Patriots are 2 examples of organizations that have shied AWAY from making big splashes and they have been so successful because of it. It seems like every time they've gone against that mindset it's backfired.. see Owens, Kearse, even Adalius Thomas in NE.
I agree Lukie... there is an odd phenomenon every year, where guys who were originally projected high but "fall off" due to some concerns, tend to go high. It only takes one team to covet a player (be slightly paranoid someone else ALSO covets that same player) and pulls the trigger. Like end of December Oher and Andre Smith were the top two tackles, but now they 'seem' well below Jason Smith and Monroe. People put a bit too much stock in media buzz... a good deal of that is just misinformation that is "sent out via sources" by teams that hope player X slips a few more spots...Quote:

Consider that a team finds out something really bad about a particular player. Why would they freely disseminate this information? They want these shitty players to be drafted. It means they get more value for the picks they have. If anything they'd want to leak how bad ass this guy is... maybe even invite him for a visit. I know all this is obvious, but i think most people hear "Sources claim that Andre Smith is fat and shitty" therefore he must be fat and shitty.
it's all smoke and mirrors leading up to the draft
to add to that though, it's probably a bit more complicated. for example, the redskins tend to be very leaky. i tend to put much more stock in reports regarding the redskins than i would about the patriots, for example.
also i'm shocked that teams don't try second leveling more often. for example, a team known to put out phony reports actually puts out a legit one, and teams presumably would assume that they then AREN'T targetting that player.
I see the Rams have finally gotten a clue and are feigning interest in Mark Sanchez... If the Skins are as infatuated as many reports, I'd be thrilled with a trade down. Seriously with the ridiculous contract involved.. I'd just as soon take a 2nd round pick to move back.
Most people seem locked with this fascination that it would that next year's first and 2 other picks as well.. and that's just stupid. I mean I'd LOVE it, but it's just dumb to hold out for THAT kind of trade. Everything is like "Snyder loves Sanchez, but might not be willing to put the picks together necessary to land him..." I would fucking KILL for just ONE team to show some sense, and say.. fuck this.. and either a) trade down for next to nothing or b) say 'fuck you we ain't picking' for a LONG time. Obviously it's in the franchises best interest to take a below "VALUE" trade... but either way...
Yeah, I wanna see Detroit sit pat until like 5 teams have picked and then hit whoever they wanted. Top of the barrell quality pick, tons of confusion. A circus, and some $$ saved.
it's easy for us to say, and even if it's ideal, most coaches/GM's don't want to risk their 7 figure a year jobs and a possible PR nightmare to boot.Quote:

In a Wednesday evening interview with Jay Harris of ESPN’s SportsCenter, Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree responded to a report that the Browns are close to removing him from their draft board after a visit last week during which he allegedly came off as a diva.
“I didn’t hear nothing about that,” Crabtree said. “As far as I know I had a good visit.”
Crabtree doesn’t seem to be upset about the report.
“I choose not to worry about it,” he said. “It don’t make me feel no different than what I felt when I walked in, you know? I’ve been truly blessed to be in the position I’m in right now, and I can’t ask for any more.”
And then he disproved the notion that he’s a diva . . . by explaining that he’s having trouble picking a suit for Saturday.
“I have about five suits, man. I need to choose. That’s the hardest thing for me, man, is choosing what I’m gonna wear, man.”
Nobody even mentioned Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for a 2010 2nd rounder?
-Tony G. has enough left in the tank to help a team in need of a TE with terrific hands.
-Chiefs actually conned someone into giving them the 2nd rounder they wanted.
-My guess is that the Chiefs never make that pick as Pioli will get ADD, package it and flip it for another pick in this years draft.
I've been drinking too much today to comment.. but it's pretty impressive. It'd be impressive to see Pioli move that pick around with something else to use it up this year.. This draft is quite deep and the top of the 2nd round has lots of solid talent.
Pioli doesn't strike me as the ADD type.
He does strike me as the type that wants to build a powerhouse well into the future. I don't see him forcing anything, and I'd be willing to bet he assigns a higher value to that pick than just about any other team in the league.
here's hoping the Texans continue to make solid early-round choices
They are in a great spot to select a starting defensive player (LB or DE) in the first and their choice of one of the many power RBs in the 2-4th rounds... (like McCoy or Greene). Great draft spot for their needs and the players that should be available.Quote:
