However, symbols are fuckin powerful. Theres a reason people dont wear swastikas on their arms even though they intend its original peaceful meaning because the intention is irrelevant in this case.

I've never really thought about it as a symbol like that I guess. If someone considered it such and was offended by its use, then I would try to respect their wishes and not use it around them.

Also I think my 5th grade teacher (been a while and I'm too lazy too look it up atm) told us that even though the swastika resembles the peace symbol (I think its a form of Buddhism but its been a while) its different somehow. I think its backwards or upside down or rotated or something, so its not exactly the same, but obviously the average person can't tell the difference.
nigger derives from negro which is the spanish/portuguese word meaning black. however history colours words just as much as symbols. as mentioned the swastika was a peaceful symbol before hitler used it for his party. now it's a universal symbol for nazism and genocide of jews. therefore you don't flash swastikas to jews you just met on the street, because that has a high probability of offending them greatly and reminding them of a painful history.
nigger wasn't a bad word per se until it was used in combination with racism - i.e. it was originally, if i understand correctly, just a neutral word to describe black people, like how people use the word asian or black today. because all that changed in recent history, this word is still strongly tied to oppression of black people in USA, South Africa, etc... and thus its casual use today can cause serious offence.

Ok hold up, eugmac and me just talked about this on IRC. He brought up the point that saying nigger is like wearing a swastika around a Jew and pointing at it and going "LOL" which makes complete sense, since the swastika is a symbol for the persecution of jews in WW2 (assuming of course that it is different from the Buddhist symbol).
Anyways, then he brought up the point that the word originated from the French word Negro so I was like wtf. I heard from someone, I forget who it's been a long time, say that nigger's definition was 'ignorant,' and tbh I've never looked it up until just now and it's definitely not ignorant. It was created to be used as a derogatory statement against slaves. Apparently I was more naive on the subject than I knew, and I'd like to apologize to everyone for making a big fuss about it and saying it wasn't a big deal.

Having said all that, I'm not sure people like me have much choice but to just avoid racial slurs. Some people still hate them. The internet can be different, and some IRL can be different, but a lot of people think that the symbol is equal to the action, and there's not much that can be done about that
