NFL Free Agency and NFL DRAFT!!!!

so I'm looking at the eagles and they have a really sick and young team.
o-line:

Jason Peters 27
Max Jean-Gilles 25
Jamaal Jackson 28
Shawn Andrews 26
Stacy Andrews 27

Winston Justice doesn't even start, that should tell you something.

Juqua Parker 30
Mike Patterson 25
Brodrick Bunkley 25
Trent Cole 26
Asante Samuel 28
All the starting LBs are 25 or younger and the rest of the D (which was probably 3rd best in the NFL last year) is pretty young as well.

Plus, don't they have like 10 draft picks still, including their first rounder? The Jason Peters trade seems like a steal to me.

As long as Andy Reid's heart doesn't explode, I think they are going to be my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

I agree 100%. He did give up 11.5 sacks last year, but also missed most of training camp and such which likely won't be the case. I hope the Eagles are a bit sensible and put some workout clauses (performance triggering stuff) in there to make sure he's giving his all. He should be a stud for 6+ years.

I think the Eagles should go RB (like Donald Brown) in round 1, or the Okla St. TE Pettigow. Both provide necessary pieces, and could make an immediate impact. Pass-rushing DE would also make a lot of sense. Very good looking team.

True, but the guy was a beast 2 years ago when he made the pro bowl and he fits the mold that the eagles are building on the O-line. The eagles did pay a pretty steep price but trading good starting left tackles is unheard of... like I cannot recall a single example besides this of it ever happening. I guess Peters contract BS and perhaps lack of effort are going to pay off for the Iggles.. only time will tell.

They are still stocked on draft picks.. such is the advantage when you stockpile picks instead of trading them all away like the Browns up until this year.

I think Pettigrew will be long gone by 21. Knowshon Moreno would be an awesome fit but he'll probably be gone as well. I like Brown as well. Then again Westbrook probably still has a few good years left so maybe they'll probably just go BPA and pick up a RB later. I can't wait for draft day though, it's always fun.

The only left tackle that was traded with a lot of gas left in the tank that I can recall is Willie Roaf. I think there was some concern about injury at the time of his trade, but he was dominant for four straight seasons in KC. But you're right, it's definitely rare.

The Eagles did trade for Lorenzo Booker last year, but he must be flaming out, because he barely saw the field last year, and I haven't heard anything about him this year.

Lorenzo Booker was a bust. Played a lot early in the season but couldn't run, catch or block. Eagles definitely need another RB, Westbrook isn't young or durable enough to be an every down back. I'd be shocked if they don't take an RB with their remaining 1st round pick and not at all surprised if they trade up in the 1st to get Moreno. TE is another need, but Brent Celek isn't that bad actually. Good hands but needs to improve his blocking. I think they'll wait until round 2 or 3 for a TE. All Philly fans desperately want Boldin or Braylon, but I'm done whining for a #1 WR. The Eagles offense is best when McNabb spreads the ball around and between DeSean, Kevin Curtis, Westbrook, Celek, Reggie Brown and Jason Avant he has plenty of targets. I'm a little worried about the safety situation with Quentin Demps trying to fill some huge shoes, but the rest of their secondary is so good it may not matter.

so I was at the gym yesterday (rah rah) and naturally i started talking about the draft with somebody. he isn't my first choice, but i like Andre Smith and wouldn't be upset if the Browns took him, combine disaster notwithstanding. he says he wouldn't mind getting him if he falls to the second, i laughed and guaranteed he'd be picked in the top 10. he disagreed.

Braylon will cost at least a 1 and 3 and a likely a new contract as well. Boldin similar.

As a Browns fan, I'd be ecstatic to get a 1 and 3 for Braylon. The dude would be great in hollywood but you can tell from watching him that he's not a football player. Shies away from contact and doesn't make an effort to catch balls when he knows he's going to get hit. Then again, it wouldn't really matter if he DID try, lol.

The Eagles and Patriots are 2 examples of organizations that have shied AWAY from making big splashes and they have been so successful because of it. It seems like every time they've gone against that mindset it's backfired.. see Owens, Kearse, even Adalius Thomas in NE.

I agree Lukie... there is an odd phenomenon every year, where guys who were originally projected high but "fall off" due to some concerns, tend to go high. It only takes one team to covet a player (be slightly paranoid someone else ALSO covets that same player) and pulls the trigger. Like end of December Oher and Andre Smith were the top two tackles, but now they 'seem' well below Jason Smith and Monroe. People put a bit too much stock in media buzz... a good deal of that is just misinformation that is "sent out via sources" by teams that hope player X slips a few more spots...

I would be really surprised if the Bengals don't take Andre Smith @ #6. There a very few teams in the top half of the draft that don't have strong needs at OT.

Consider that a team finds out something really bad about a particular player. Why would they freely disseminate this information? They want these shitty players to be drafted. It means they get more value for the picks they have. If anything they'd want to leak how bad ass this guy is... maybe even invite him for a visit. I know all this is obvious, but i think most people hear "Sources claim that Andre Smith is fat and shitty" therefore he must be fat and shitty.

it's all smoke and mirrors leading up to the draft

to add to that though, it's probably a bit more complicated. for example, the redskins tend to be very leaky. i tend to put much more stock in reports regarding the redskins than i would about the patriots, for example.

also i'm shocked that teams don't try second leveling more often. for example, a team known to put out phony reports actually puts out a legit one, and teams presumably would assume that they then AREN'T targetting that player.

I see the Rams have finally gotten a clue and are feigning interest in Mark Sanchez... If the Skins are as infatuated as many reports, I'd be thrilled with a trade down. Seriously with the ridiculous contract involved.. I'd just as soon take a 2nd round pick to move back.

it's easy for us to say, and even if it's ideal, most coaches/GM's don't want to risk their 7 figure a year jobs and a possible PR nightmare to boot.

-Chiefs actually conned someone into giving them the 2nd rounder they wanted.
-My guess is that the Chiefs never make that pick as Pioli will get ADD, package it and flip it for another pick in this years draft.

I've been drinking too much today to comment.. but it's pretty impressive. It'd be impressive to see Pioli move that pick around with something else to use it up this year.. This draft is quite deep and the top of the 2nd round has lots of solid talent.

Pioli doesn't strike me as the ADD type.

He does strike me as the type that wants to build a powerhouse well into the future. I don't see him forcing anything, and I'd be willing to bet he assigns a higher value to that pick than just about any other team in the league.

here's hoping the Texans continue to make solid early-round choices

They are in a great spot to select a starting defensive player (LB or DE) in the first and their choice of one of the many power RBs in the 2-4th rounds... (like McCoy or Greene). Great draft spot for their needs and the players that should be available.

It's really only a problem at the top of round 1 in my eyes.

There are other rookies that get screwed.

Say you're a running back drafted in the later round and you end up becoming an elite running back. You could easily be looking at about 7 years of beatings before you can get paid (minimum 3 in college football for free, 4 for very small contract by nfl standards). RB is a devalued position and typically don't play very long so it is kind of a big deal in my eyes.

I don't like the Chiefs' pick, but I'm going to trust Scott Pioli (formerly of the Patriots) knows wtf he is doing. The pick makes sense, I guess, as we run a 3-4 and it'd be nice to have a badass DL so the LB's can do their work.....but we'll see. The pick doesn't excite me like a freaking #3 pick should.

this is fucking stupid. he's a great pass rusher who never really got a chance to do that a lot with julian peterson here, so we trade peterson and draft a guys whose only knock is that he isn't a premier pass rusher and let hill go. wtf.

i read we are likely to get a third round compensatory pick next year when he signs elsewhere, but i'm pissed.

this makes the curry pick much less exciting imo.

i'm kind of wondering if we go sign derrick brooks for a year or two now as he has ties to our new DC and front office.

Great draft for my Packers, filled needs at the right time without reaching. Loved the Raji pick, his tape footage, especially from the Senior Bowl practices, is just sick. Really happy with the Clay Matthews pick, he reminds me of Bill Romanowski. I can see him having a beer with Kevin Greene, Nick Barnett and AJ Hawk talking about Pro Wrestling, then starting a bar fight roadhouse style. Great value 2nd day on the O-line with Lang and Meredith, would have liked to see a 6th or 7th round punter though.

So I just looked over the Lion's total draft. After my first disappointment at them drafting Pettigrew at 20 over a LB or OT, it's really not that bad of a pick. He's a really good blocker that can immediately bolster the OL for Kevin Smith and has good enough speed and hands to give Stafford/Culpepper another weapon over the middle.

The Stafford pick is meh, but idk. No one will be bitching if he turns into the next Peyton Manning so I'll hold my tongue.

The Safety at 33rd is a good pick, but I still don't understand them not picking the LB (Monaulaga or however the fuck you spell it) from USC but their secondary DID need some serious help.

They picked up a couple of LB's later in the draft, along with an OT and a RB so they did fill some needs.

Also, the Receiver they got in Williams from Penn State could/should turn into a worthy pick. He will probably turn into a good if not great kick returner, and will probably turn into a good slot receiver.

So all in all, it wasn't a total bust like I first feared. I feel a little more hopeful for them this year, but obviously not expecting anything great. (You can't get any worse than 0-16 :/).
