A Don't Starve Thread?!? WTF, MMM?

I haven't mentioned it yet, and no one else has, but... You guys are building Ice Boxes, right?

Once you can build 2 Football Helmets, 2 or more Log Suits, and a Spear, you can take on at least a couple of the clockwork chess pieces.

With a bird in a cage... you can feed it cooked monster meat or monster jerky at any level of spoiling and get fresh eggs. When the eggs start to spoil, you can cook them on the fire and feed them back to the bird for fresh eggs. Hence, a spoilage work-around for at least one food.

WOW. I just noticed that this thread is getting almost 100:1 views to posts. Who else is playing this game and not posting?

I keep reading, although I think LoL has taken my interest more than getting far on this.

Haven't read a single post in the thread (yet, not sure if I will) but Internet died for a few hours last night so been playing it. Thoroughly enjoyable, my best is 15 days so far. On most saves I manage to get the science machine - finding gold and manure seems to be the key to staying alive at least initially.

Up to Day 64, and I'm yet to see the need for a panic room, at least for basic predators like hounds. I'm camped a short run away from beefalo and planted a lureplant an even shorter run away, and this takes care of any predators. In fact, I love when Wilson says, "Did you hear that?" cause I've pretty much come to take that as a sign that I'm about to get loaded up on Monster Meat and Meat.

I used to be a short run away from a colony of pig houses, too, but I busted them shits up for a bunch of pig skins that ended up getting eaten and boards and cut stone that I have a huge surplus on -.- I've learned from this that you should always leave one pig house when you bust up a colony because pigs are more useful than having 10+ pig skins. Anyway, I've been able to recruit pigs for the bosses (though I still have no idea who Deerclops is and that's one of the few things I've been resisting wiki'ing, so we'll see if this boss is slow enough to allow me to run and recruit pigs to come back and fight; I also don't know which bosses are predatory enough to get beefalo to fight them).

As far as Touchstones go, they're great for early game, but I wouldn't panic if you use them up early because you don't really need them once you've got magic going and get some red gems and stuff. Using up my Touchstones early used to be grounds for ragequitting, since I figured I was always gonna be screwed without a backup, but Meat Effigies and Life-Giving Amulets are actually even better than Touchstones (their drawbacks are less shitty than Touchstones).

Deerclops is always somewhere in the world during winter.

Just died on Night 70 -.- The irony is that it actually happened while building a panic-type peninsula thing. I had 21 Hounds Teeth, so I decided I could build 2-3 layers of tooth traps and tuck myself into a peninsula with food and a fire. I had the first row built with no holes, and I had all the materials for a fire pit, so when 10 hounds showed up right at sundown, I could have just tucked back there and built the fire pit and taken out my fighting gear (using the pit for warmth as much as the light).

Buuuuuuut, the greedy gamer that I am, I put on my log suit and miner's hat and started running toward the beefalo (not sure how I thought it would be a waste of my resources to tuck into the panic room seeing as how this is the exact situation I built it for). So of course I froze to death, and then the hounds were right by my meat effigy so I double died.

Holy wow, I just wiki'ed the Heat Stone and I've been using it all sorts of wrong. I had no idea you had to charge it. It's probably been making me cold fast much more often than it's been warming me up lol.

Well, now that you know... It's marginally useful to have a 2nd Heat Stone that you just leave by the fire. That way you can sometimes just swap a cold one for a hot one. It's not as useful as you might think, since most of the time you come back to camp, the fire's out anyway. Heat Stones are so cheap to make that I think it's worth it.

If you do meet Deerclops, and want to kill him in a kind of too easy way:
EXTRA WARNING: The reward drop from Deerclops is pretty underwhelming. So the real reward is the sense of personal accomplishment at figuring out how to kill him.

He's got 2,000 HP. I used an entire stack of Blow Darts, which takes a pretty big time investment to make. Frankly, using the blow darts is the only way I've killed Deerclops (after many encounters), but some combo of traps and darts would be most efficient. I'd say the greatest benefit from it was that I have a ton of left over darts, so I can play more of a ranger style as opposed to melee. PLUS, killing Krampus is fun when on feather gathering runs.

Still haven't run into Deerclops. I was thinking gunpowder would be the key?

I don't use gunpowder for anything. I even looked on youtube to find a good use for it, and I didn't see anything that looked pro.

Let me know if you have/find any use for gunpowder, actually.

We all died in regretful and, in retrospect, hilarious ways when we first started playing. The game is very good at tricking you into thinking you're tougher than you are, especially in the first game year (36 game days), when it's far more difficult to regain health.

Once you have a somewhat continuous source of armor and healing, you can explore with a bit more bravado. You'll also want to keep an eye on sanity, but it's rather easily regained by prototyping new items and sleeping.

Keeping a 100% torch at all times should reduce you're retard-death by like 85%.

So many times I retard die for no reason like not realising what time it is and forgetting to make a fire and realising I don't have any twigs

fixing the twig situation is one of the first things I do. Once you've transplanted a bunch of them to your camp, you're just done caring about that resource, which is a load off.

Haven't taken don't starve off the shelf for a while but I found a game that bears some resemblance to it.

Terraria. It's basically what would happen if minecraft, diablo, and super metroid had sex and made a deformed offspring.

It's a 2-D (in section like Metroid as opposed to Zelda) randomly generated world sandbox game with a large emphasis on building/crafting. The world on medium settings is seriously massive, with large settings it's hard to imagine how big it would feel.

There's a new update to it later today that expands it massively so I'm eagerly awaiting.

Dunno if anyone is still playing this game but I got into it again. I'm like 90 days into a new game with a few new observations:

1) Spears are for hitting spider's dens and defending the first 1-2 hound waves only. After a couple of weeks into the game, you can find tentacle spikes lying around in the big swamp areas from where the merms have been fighting the tentacles. There's really no reason not to have a tentacle spike after day 15 when hounds come.

2) Transplanting three, MAYBE four spider's dens to near your base should cover your silk and monster meat needs for the most part. If you put 6 or 8 pig's houses nearby, you'll just randomly see 3-4 silk lying on the ground whenever you return to your base. You don't have to farm spiders daily or anything (unless you specifically want monster meat), just pop them all when they ripen up to level 3 and thats 25-35 silk and a ton of meat every 20 days.

3) Hounds are a joke as long as you invest the majority of the hounds teeth you accumulate into a big pile of traps. And you don't have to depend on hound attacks to get them, just farm the walrus camps during winter.

4) The first thing you should do when the first winter starts is make some boomerangs, a log suit, a football helmet, find a tentacle spike, and kill mactusks until you get a tusk, a tam o' shanter, and a pile of hounds teeth. The extra teeth will get you ahead of the game on hound defense, the t.o.s. is the one stop never worry again solution to sanity and warmth (you can repair it with sewing kits), and one tusk is sufficient for the most useful item in the game, the walking cane.

5) After 4) you should find the chess pieces asap and kill a clockwork bishop for 2 gears and a purple gem to make Ice Boxes and the Shadow Manipulator. One set of armor and tentacle spike is more than sufficient (really a spear and logsuit would be fine as long as you had full health and didn't draw aggro from the other pieces)..

6) I still think farms suck balls. The initial investment to build 10-15 of them is so high and they take so long to bear decent fruit. You basically have to pray for dragon fruit and then eventually (or sooner with a shitload of manure), snowball enough seeds to get 2 dragon fruit per day, and theres so many easier ways to get the equivalent to dragon pie.

7) The easiest solution to food is ample rabbit holes + spider's nests + bee boxes. Monster meat + 2 morsel + honey = Honey Ham 75 hunger / 30 health.

8) A similar alternative is rabbits + spider's nest + birdcage. Cooks morsels and monster meat are fed to the bird as necessary to make the correct ratio of eggs for Bacon and Eggs (75 hunger / 20 health). The infrastructure for this is much easier to set up than 7) but it doesn't bear as much bounty since you have to downgrade monster meat to eggs. In my game I started with bacon and eggs and set up honey ham at the start of the second summer.

9) If you need to catch up on food quickly, just hunt koalefants. Once you get the walking cane, it's super fast to track them, and they are very easy to kite and kill without taking a single hit, and the drop 8 meat. So if you need meat for honey ham or bacon and eggs and you ran out of monster meat, just go on a hunting expedition for a day and grab 16-24 meat relatively easily.

10) Treeguards are also a joke to kite and take zero damage. I don't bother planting pinecones anymore when they wake up, just grab a tentacle spike, hit them twice and dodge their absurdly telegraphed attack, rinse repeat until done.

11) Deerclops pwn kit: a chest in your camp with a stack of exactly 9 gunpowders, an ice staff, and a torch. When he shows up, shoot him 4 times with the ice staff, plant the stack, torch it, and then finish him off with a tentacle spike to get the trophy.

In my latest game I've conquered the overworld, time to hit the caves.

Epic post. Basically a "How to pwn the overworld" guide. Makes me want to take on a Deerclops again.

What character are you playing / which is your favorite (if you have one)?

Any other uses for Gunpowder and Slurtle Slime?

You didn't mention it in your post, but making a quick exploratory trip to the caves to pick up some Light Bulbs is well worth it. Even in the early game, getting a Lantern can allow you extreme freedom to keep busy at night. The Lantern is so useful that it's even worth leaving the caves on your first trip as soon as you find Light Bulbs, so you can go craft one, even if you intend to immediately return to the caves.

Pro-tip for cave exploring: Time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking... into the future.
The days advance in the overworld just as if you were there... so you can be in the caves when the hound attack is triggered. The hounds wont follow you into the cave, but will be waiting for you when you return to the overworld. As such, laying a field of traps around the cave entrance can be a mandatory preface to a deep cave exploration... especially if you intend to be down for long enough that multiple waves of hound attack could trigger.

EDIT: Make a Miner's Hat before you go into the caves the first time... and bring some extra fireflies to make sure you can re-craft it when it 'burns out'. Light Bulbs spawn in their own biome and your entrance to the caves may not be anywhere them.

I've only played wilson. I've gotten cozy to the concept of not needing to wear warm clothes during winter.

I've got one question though. I think a recent patch has changed the way armor works. I can't seem to wear logsuit / pig helmet in an order that allows the pig helmet to degrade more slowly. It seems regardless of what I put on first, the helmet takes 80% of the damage and the logsuit takes 16%. This really sucks balls considering that a single tough skirmish may degrade the helmet by as much as 50% and how hard it is to get pig skins once the initial supply starts running out.

Fully bearded wilson will last until after dusk until he starts taking freezing damage. Then you can drop a campfire to quickly warm up and then work for the rest of the day. It's wood-intensive but wood is so easy to come by that who cares?

Mainly at first:
Find a rocky biome and mine only the rocks with the yellow lines on them.

Then later in the game:
1) Find Pig King
2) Have a way to raise sanity and dig a bunch of graves
3) Sell otherwise worthless items to Pig King for lots of gold

Also, in a pinch:
Pig King will give 1 gold for any meat except raw Monster Meat and will accept Eggs, but not Tallbird Eggs.

Imma go with gold-line rocks for my best bet. Shit gets crazy in the game pretty quickly.

PS Pig Kings hoarding my science gold... if only the real world were like this... oh wait.

I think my favorite thing slash worst thing about this game is the pressure I feel when playing it. It both makes the game exciting and fun and also makes me not want to play it for very long. I have to take a break from this game after a while.

This is a sandbox-type survival game. No real goals are presented to you by the game. You are simply dropped into a mysterious world, which you can choose to explore in any way you like. The primary driving factors in the game are keeping yourself alive, sane and well-fed, which is a tall order. Expect to die a LOT if you play this game. Somewhere around day 6, you should have picked your spot on the map for your base camp, which is where you'll put your fire pit.

Until then, just keep moving. Try to avoid any combat at all. Try to stick to the roads and identify as many biomes as you can.

Place the traps on top of the rabbit holes. Regarding fires, I did favor a torch only strategy for the first few days, just to cover as much ground as possible. Now I prefer stopping at night near a bunch of trees and chopping all night before continuing to reveal the map the next day. The idea is to minimize idle time. Time is so extremely precious that you really need to be doing something useful at all times, even at night. Logs are an indispensable resource that are pretty time-intensive to extract, so it's nice to get a head start on them while you look for your ideal camp spot. Setting up a fire pit and some chests and log suits etc will quickly burn through a few stacks of wood.

If you can make good use of the first 20 days the rest of the game will be a lot easier for you. The ideal first summer should get you >1/2 of the map fully explored with >80% outlined, chester (the mobile chest), a good base camp with 2 crock pots and a few drying racks, infinite twigfarm and log farm, the beginnings of a grass farm, 2 or 3 chests full of live rabbits, a tentacle spike with a couple of sets of football/log armor, and if you truly went hard on exploring, a gear to make an ice box.

All of those things will rarely happen though unless you got a lucky map. The idea is to be able to spend the first winter and second summer on more specialized endeavors while not having to worry about basic resources.

I think they do, but you have to run much farther from their nest than usual.

Also... keeping a pet in this game is possible, but a hugely frustrating endeavor. Don't bother hatching a tallbird egg... at least not while you're trying to learn how to keep alive.

Tallbird eggs are only really useful if you're stockpiling a food source that will never spoil. Raw tallbird eggs will not spoil, fill 25 hunger and 3 health. Cooked eggs spoil as fast as raw berries, and fill 37.5 hunger, but 0 health.

Also, activate touchstones whenever you find them. This will act as a 1-shot resurrection point. It's a good idea to leave weapon, armor, torches, fire building equipment, winter hat, heat stone, etc. in a chest near each active touchstone. It is so tilting when you die, resurrect and die again.

Does refresh time on planted bushes vary? Like, if I plant a berry bush in the grass versus the fields.

I think it would be pretty badass (albeit doable) to prohibit using traps during a playthrough. It'd put the hunger pressure on a little harder, but it'd be kind of liberating too cause you'd have a lot more incentive to assault spiders nests and hunt koalafants, and also you wouldn't be forced into such a narrow list of base camping spots.

I think it's 4 days for berry bushes and saplings and 3 days for grass. All roughly and I think there's a random factor involved as well.

Beware the allure of berry bush transplanting. I'd only transplant 10 or so because they take up a lot of real estate and have a steep fertilizer cost for meager benefits; berries are essentially crock pot filler.

I'm pretty sure they re-grow after it rains... but could be a time factor, too.

EDIT: Mushrooms def grow back after it rains.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that rain accelerates the growth of everything.

LOL, yeah. A standard year in don't starve lasts 36 days. The game starts on the first day of summer. That's the first day after winter, since there's only summer and winter for seasons.

So the first winter ends on day 36, the 2nd winter ends on day 72, etc.

Some basic tips to keep warm during the first winter:

Make 2 - 3 heat stones. Only carry 1 with you, but leave spares near active touch stones.
If you leave one on the ground near your fire pit, then you can avoid using winter clothes when you go on lumberjacking runs. Just dash back to the fire and leave your cold one on the ground, and picking up the hot one. Don't forget to stoke the fire, but since you're collecting wood, that's not an issue.

Gotta shave those beefalo and make a winter hat. I find little use in the vests, since armor is so necessary most of the time.

Pro-tip: Warm clothing loses durability when it's worn, so always take off winter gear when you're at base camp and the fire's lit. The fire will keep you warm.

I need to find some beefalo but I managed to make a heat stone at least.

So I currently have a crock pot, 8 rabbit traps, 3 improved farms, a bee thingy, and a science and alchemy machine. What's my next moves? Our improved farms worth it? They seem like a waste.

Beefalo are easy to kite, so long as you isolate one from the pack. Even if you're dealing with a whole pack of them, if you can just get one far enough ahead of the herd, you can kite 1 hit at a time, which is time consuming but should make keep you alive. Oh, and you should basically always be equipped with both armor and a helmet.

It's the most annoying piece of shit in the game, that's what it is. Just be glad it didn't set up at your camp. It's not tough to vanquish or anything (just get the plant in the middle, and all the eyes will die), but it's just obnoxious.

Like a lot of stationary monsters, though, you can use them to help fight against other monsters. Especially, in this case, hounds because they lure them into the center with their meat.

Always be thinking about / improving your "panic room". I prefer a field close to base with it's own fire pit, surrounded by tons and tons of spike traps. Others prefer to build a room... whatever your choice, the hounds come more frequently and in greater number and with less warning as the days progress. So you'll always want to be thinking about how to improve your chances.

Catch 6 or more live butterflies and plant them around your bee box.

Build at least 6 drying racks.

Build another crock pot.

Find the Eye Bone, so you can have Chester.

Build the Prestihatitator.

Make an ice staff in the Prestihatitator.

Follow the tracks to the koalefant. Shoot koalefant once with the ice staff to aggro him, then swoop in and melee/tank him for massive big meats and a koalefant trunk.

Make a Meat Effigy in the Prestihatitator.

Use traps and lure spiders into them for silk farming. Spiders will become a major headache in the mid game, and culling the population early is a good move. I wrote an extensive spoiler on spider/silk farming w/o traps somewhere in this thread, but Renton has clued me in to the much safer spider-trapper method. Other than the method of killing them, the spider/silk farm techniques still hold.

Catch some fireflies and make a miner hat. Holding the bug net, when you see a firefly, go stand where you saw it and press space. Even though it's invisible at the time, you will catch it.
Pro-tip, catch fireflies and place them in a ring around your camp where the firelight diminishes... You'll thank me.

IF YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE TOUCHSTONE, THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH A CHEST OF GEAR:
Find the robot chess pieces and kill a couple to get gears. It's a tough fight, have 2-3 suits of armor w/ helmet and some means of healing after. Use the gears to make 2 refrigerators. 1 for ingredients that is close enough to the crock pot that you can open both simultaneously, and 1 that is a little bit away in which you store prepared meals.

Find the Scottish walrus (only during winter) and shoot him with the ice staff until he's frozen, then swoop in and melee. He drops 2 unique items that are massively useful. It's a good idea to kill his blue hounds first, but you can usually ignore his son. (This is another hard fight, so same guidelines as with the chess pieces.)

I've posted a few times ITT about how to make a large dragon fruit farm. It is a fun setup... and visually pleasing. It's certainly a viable solution to food and health issues. It enables dragon pie as a primary food source, which basically solves all hunger and health issues during the summer, but in mid winter the stockpile runs out.

This is better:
fish / trap frogs to have access to Fish Sticks and Froggle Bunwich from the crock pot while you work toward the following:
Gather reeds -> Craft paper -> make bird cage -> make bird trap -> trap live bird -> put bird in cage
-> feed the caged bird cooked or dried monster meat -> collect eggs -> use eggs in crock pot
Bacon and Eggs / Pierogi are as good as dragon pie, are available year round, and require less time investment to produce.

If you aggro one, you can run away and separate it from the herd. You can kill a single beefalo, if you KIT well.

If you're collecting poo, then make sure you're not holding a weapon. That way, if you accidentally click on a beefalo, you wont hit it.

They only spawn in a place you've previously explored, then left. So they will spawn at your base camp if you leave for any period of time.

They are visible on the map, even when you haven't seen them up close, yet... so you can check to see if one has spawned at your base camp any time you're in the overworld.

Just hit the eyes once, and they retreat into the ground for a bit. Clear a path to the center and bash the bulb to kill it.

Agree with MMM except for I'd put the silk farming earlier in your plans. Usually I kill 2-3 tier 3 spider dens just before the first winter, and one or two more during the first winter. 3-4 spiders' dens a few screens from your camp should meet your silk needs as long as you make sure to pop them when they are ripe (between 15-25 days after you replant them). I usually put my pig houses as a buffer between my camp and my spiders and that way when i come back from a trip theres always a few silks and occasional pig skin just lying on the ground for me to pick up.

Well since you already know how to do bee boxes, build on that. The best way to do a honey farm is to array a few bee boxes closely around a group of 10-15 flowers. You can plant flowers by catching butterflies with the bug net and "planting" them to make flowers. Once you have that set up you'll be fixed for honey indefinitely. Then I'd work on getting spider farming going. Between spiders, honey, and rabbits you will not have to care about food again.

Then work on survival and failsafes. Start piling up an arsenal of log suits, pig helmets, and tentacle spikes and placing them along with basic provisions near touchstones in case you die. And tooth traps, lots and lots of tooth traps.

Pro Tip: Build Bee boxes in a place such that
A) You can be standing on a path/road when you gather the honey
B) You can run away in a straight line for at least a couple of paces

If you do this, you can use the speed boost of moving on a path/road to gather the honey and run away w/o getting stung.

Also build them a decent distance away since they only need to be harvested periodically and they make tons of annoying noise.

On the negative side, my guy just got murdered by tentacle thingies and I'm pretty much doomed.

On the plus side, I figured out why my guy runs faster sometimes...roads.

Are wooden walls worth it? My hound defense strategy so far has been to flee to the massive beefalo heard near my camp and let them deal with the hounds.

Wooden walls are flammable so they're basically worthless against hounds. I've yet to find a decent use for walls, honestly. Supposedly stone walls can be used for panic rooms.

If you use a wormhole, will the hounds still chase you?

Yes. It takes them a while to find you, and they may or may not make it to you without aggro-ing on something else.

If you worm-holed to an island, then the hounds can't follow you, but will ambush you the next time you're on a piece of land they can reach.

If you go into a cave, they will wait for you outside the cave.

They may spawn while you're in a cave anyway, so it's not a terrible idea to set up some spike traps around the cave entrance.
