That trend seems to be shifting with a growing acceptance towards a more "renaissance", or "redhead from madmen" figure, but to deny the influence the media has had in shaping our ideals of beauty is just plain iggn'nt.

I happen to work in media, and two days ago we ran a photo spread of previously unseen pictures of Marilyn Monroe. We ran them because there is obviously still a ton of interest in Marilyn, because she's hot as hell.
The only people going around saying Marilyn was fat are fat chicks.

The extent to which "media" or "culture" pressures women to be image-conscious, largely comes from the fashion industry. And guess what, the fashion industry is dominated by women and homosexual men. And the fashion industry deserves to be ripped for it; the things that they do to girls is pretty appalling. Corsets have been around for centuries and have fallen out of fashion, probably because there aren't any fashion models with enough meat to fill a corset. Also, I don't know any guys that were going around raving that Kate Moss was smoking hot.
When there's a rash of dudes telling their 5-foot-9, 130 pound girlfriends that they need to lose 20 pounds, you'll have a case.
For a fun exercise, go back and look at various cultural touchstones like Bond girls or S.I. swimsuit girls over the past 50 years.
Personally, I love the fact that the Bond girls have gotten more exotic (although they generally always had accents) but Ursula Andress is still the standard. Irina Shayk has the exact same measurements as Christie Brinkley and Cheryl Tiegs.

The only people who say this are, as Jessica Siegel says, reacting to the "recent cultural bias toward skinnier girls" which has always been a bunch of b.s. Skinny girls have always been in vogue, and women have always been jealous of skinnier girls, and skinny girls have always made derogatory comments about fat girls. (Check out Mena Suvari playing Marilyn Monroe and talking about Liz Taylor's fat arms.)
The only thing that's changed in the past 10, 20, 30 years is people started getting fatter and fat people started to get really defensive about it.
In the 1990s you have two things going on: 1, the anti-glam/anti-big-hair grunge/post-grunge and a "girl-next-door" type in every movie and every magazine cover -- Winona Ryder, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, the "Friends" cast.
2, Playmates became mainstream. Hefner's always had an obvious personal preference so bleached blondes with big tits started showing up everywhere -- Pamela Anderson, Jenny McCarthy, Anna Nicole Smith.
Are these women any skinnier than Paulina Porizkova or Christie Brinkley or Cindy Crawford or Heather Locklear? I cannot discern any difference at all.
