COD: Black Ops

I don't get why COD is so popular compared to Battlefield BC2.

I haven't played COD tbh, but I don't see a reason why BC2 should be so far ahead in popularity. It looks really dated compared to BC2.
I think the killstreak rewards in COD are a terrible idea. It just promotes camping. If someone camps in BC2 you just blow up the building they're in, no that it matters anyway because you can't win if you don't move and play as a team. You should be rewarded for clearing objectives and teamwork imo.

Battlefield isn't a bad game (I've only played like 2 hours on multiplayer) but the maps seem huge and there's a lot of dead time spent running, respawn delays, etc. FWIW we only played Rush and it might have just been the game type.

Oh rush is the best. You always need to be in a squad. When you die, one of the guys at the front should hide and wait for three seconds so you can respawn there. Plus whenever there's a long distance from the spawn point and a small choke there should be medics at the back to revive.

Does anyone play on PC? My game has been crashing at startup for about 2 months. Apparently its a really common problem yet there is no fix.

yeah, its still has ~500k people online most days. COD games stay relevant for about a full year until the next one is released. This one is only 2 months old.

Multiplayer popularity will fade but the campaign and zombie modes are decent enough as well. There's not a lot of flexibility in it...it's almost like a rail shooter at times...but it's got a somewhat interesting story.

I can't ever find enough time to play FPSs well enough to not embarass myself against 11-year old kids so I need a good single-player mode too.

Yea, that's the thing, I'm more into sitting and playing the single player stuff I think. Haven't played a ton of video games in the last few years, I'm not even sure what genre I prefer anymore. I hacked my Wii so I can pretty much download anything I want for that, and if I like it I will probably buy the PS3 game instead.

CoD was a single player that added multiplayer in later versions. There campaigns are always pretty decent. But overall it only takes roughly 3-4 hours per game to complete, although I think I only spent about 2 hours on Black Ops campaign. You'll be done pretty quick. But Benny's right, Zombies is really fun and addicting. One of those "JUST ONE MORE GAME!" for the next 2 hours kind of game mode.

If you don't already own it, MW2 added the Spec Ops mode where it's basically 1/2 online and 1/2 single player. You just team up with a friend (definately need mics) and it's like a seperate campaign in itself. I thought Spec Ops was a lot more fun than the actual campaign.

I tried CoD:WaW on Wii and is ridiculously tough. It brings a lot of the fun back into the game but I'm a "tryhard" and dying repeatedly makes me want to chuck something at my TV.

P.S. As a time filler, Black Ops has the Combat Training mode where it's single player set in a multiplayer enviroment.

Instead of real opponents you just play against AI with the same game modes, weapons, etc as multiplayer and can adjust your difficulty level. Once you can beat those games consistently then multiplayer should be lol EZ mode.

That's pretty fun too if you're just wanting to dick around without all the 15 year old keyboard commandos calling you a "scrub".

I would like to play online with Jyms though since he can get so enraged over what people on the internet say and has that instinct to automatically retalliate. Just listening to the back and forth with him and the kids on CoD is probably worth hours of luhlz!

Softmodded it. Had to put a homebrew channel, do a bunch of software mods and shit but I can run everything from an HDD now. Pretty easy step by steps if you want.

my ps3 died this weekend. went to pick up a new one yesterday after work at best buy and got a free copy of GT5. nice little bonus, even though i'll never put in the hours to get all the really good cars.

I think if PS built better quality controllers I would be slightly more apt to buy one. I just feel like I'm going to snap it in half and break the thumbsticks off everytime I use it.

Was playing some zombies with my bro yesterday. First time I've played blackops in 2011. Is the new dlc pack any good?

the zombie level is friggin huge. lots to do do when you play there...

f'n love zombies. was drunk as fuck last night and hit round 20 with 3, then round 18 with 2.

I find the key is to move through doors fast enough that you're not trying to kill relatively higher round zombies with shitty weapons, but not move so fast that you don't have enough to afford shit.

my std game now is to move to the mp40 room at the end of round 4, whore points up there till about round 8, then turn the power on, find the box, get nog and get a good gun. From there it's just about teleporting at the start of rounds, then running the circle, upgrading the right gun. also get thundergun and quick revive so you cal plow a path for you to revive your donk buddies who keep dying.

dozer do you play reg multiplayer ever? i've never really gotten into the zombie thing, but add me (jzbode) on psn if you want to play some DOM/DEMO/TDM ever.

only a few times. I used to love FFA / TDM back in the day, but now I'm too old to be any good so I basically walk around maps I don't know for 30 seconds before dying in a 1/2 a sec and repeat.

Is there a good fag/guide for zombies? Things like nog, and teleport and mp40 room and pretty much everything in your strategy makes no sense. I've only played it like 5 times.

Go back to page 2 imo. That's basically the beginnings of the strategy that d0zer is talking about (unless this is a different map). After that just run around and get the zombies strung out behind you (don't go too fast or they'll turn around you'll get squeezed.) Use 'nades and machine gun to pick them off, etc.

I didn't buy the new maps since I don't play Black Ops enough to pay the $$ for them. But I did play a few games on Ascension at my brothers. The new weapons are pretty fucking cool and the monkey's that toss back 'nades and steal perks is fucking hilarious.

dr---err.... roid rage's guide isn't bad, I disagree with a few things -- here's a map for reference. knowing the map well is obv key.

Starting from the lobby (bottom room on map), there's 2 loops to get back there. the left loop sucks for a few reasons, so we're gunna be focusing on the right loop (starting at lobby, to pm63 room, to mp40 room, to dressing room, to backsage, to theatre).

I don't move from the lobby until either midway through round 4, or at the end of it (if I'm getting swarmed on round4 I'll just open the upstairs door to give me more room to back off, use nades here to make it easier on you). Then one guy opens first door, someone else opens the next door, down the stairs & grab the mp40. The mp40 room is a great room to hold down for a few rounds because there's no zombies dropping from the ceiling which are harder to deal with cuz you can't repair those openings. The dressing room and the pm63 rooms suck to hold down for this reason. Don't bother with the stakeout. Even though it's a decent shotgun, you don't get nearly as many points for stakeout kills as you do with the mp40. Rounds 4-8 are all about point whoring so do it right and forget the stakeout.

About near the end of round 8, everyone's usually got a bunch of points, so we open the next 2 doors and go backstage. This is also a decent area to hold (before the power's turned on) as there's only 2 zombie openings then the main entrance. Sometimes I'll hold this area till round 9 or 10. The problem is that by round 10-12 you start noticing that any gun you can buy off the wall starts to suck, so you need to either upgrade your gun, or find the mystery box. I always go for the box, cuz you can get much better guns to upgrade than the wall guns. MP40/stakeout are ok guns to upgrade, but there's many better ones in the box, so gambol on the box and at worst you usually end up with a better SMG than the mp40.

If I haven't found the box by round 9 or so and I'm backstage, I'll just turn on the power, which lets you see where the box is (there's a map behind every box with a light showing you which room it's in). Sometimes you have to open up some doors on the left loop to get to the box which sucks but it's gotta be done. You have to leave a crawler to not end the round to give everyone time to whore the box up properly.

The best box weapons (in order of awesomeness):

Thundergun / raygun (don't even need upgrading till like round 18+)
RPK, HK21 (they have 400 and 500 max ammo, 100+ per clip and are awesome upgraded)
Then AUG, galil, commando. 3 SMGs better than the mp40 and are decent upgraded.

Monkey bombs are fun and really useful if you need to revive someone or escape from getting swarmed.

The worst things to get from the box are sniper rifles, grenade launchers/rocket launchers.

Once the power is on, you have a complete circle from lobby around the path you first took to the theatre and back to lobby. Ideally you start each next round with the teleporter linked up (link it first in the theatre, then hit the "link activator" in the lobby). You start the round defending the teleporter, then as you get swarmed you teleport (which kills all the zombies around the teleporter), and puts you up in the viewing room where you can toss nades down to the masses swarming in the theatre. The viewing room is also where you upgrade your gun which is key for surviving the higher rounds. upgraded guns do like at least twice the damage, hold more per clip and more max ammo and are just awesomer in general. Just don't waste your money upgrading a shitty gun.

You'll automatically teleport back to the lobby after ~30 secs or so, and then zombz come swarming in from the theatre. Here's where you run the loop (back to mp40 room, through dressing room, to theatre and repeat). You've gotta get a feel for when you can turn around and unload a clip into the masses chasing you, don't stay for too long, but if you run too fast they'll start coming from the other direction, and when they swarm you from both directions you're fucked.

Some general tips:

Make crawler zombies with nades, and don't kill them until you actually wanna start the next round. Having a crawler at the end of the higher rounds is so important. It gives you time to repair openings, get weapons, link the teleporter, plan for the next round etc.

Always have an escape strategy in the back of your mind. If you have to open a door to make more room for you to back off the swarm, do it. Avoid corners you can get stuck in like the plague. Open areas are your friend.

Don't die with tons of money. If you find yourself with tons of money and the same gun you've been using for a few rounds, it's probably starting to suck, so make it easier on yourself, get a better gun.

I disagree about making a crawler. Just estimate when there's only 3-5 zombies and hold in an open spot (theatre is great for this) and whittle it down to 1 zombie. DO NOT make him a crawler as crawlers bleed out over time in this game a lot more often than they did in WaW.

This might not be the case and me and my friend ran really bad over the few times we tried to make one, but its just easier to do it this way anyways as you can walk (not sprint) faster than any zombie can run.

I don't have issues with crawlers bleeding out, though usually I make a couple inadvertently (long before we're down to the last few). I've had em' last long enough for us to repair all entrances, hit the box so many times that it moves, etc

Hmm.. maybe me and my buddy just ran bad for the few times we tried to do it. Regardless, either way works fine I'm sure.

my strategy once everything is all open and i have enough to get the upgrade is once i have gone in the teleporter just toss mad nades (you will def leave a crawler) and then as soon as it teleports you back you just run infront of you and hit the trap and then slay all the zombies around you....then after that you just go and set up some claymores next to the teleport, get it all linked up again, kill crawler, wait in teleport for all zombies to be coming at you and then teleport.....toss mad nades...repeat

That'll work fine for earlier rounds, but if you just run the circle when you need to instead of using traps, you can save your money for setting traps later when you absolutley have to. I usually don't start using traps till round 20. round 24 set 2 traps etc...

Also on later rounds holding down the room from the onslaught coming in the non-trap direction will be near impossible unless everyone has a raygun/thundergun, and you won't be done killing them all by the time the trap wears out and then you got guys coming from all directions.

I've been playing mostly ascension lately -- pretty cool map and I find it harder with more tight spaces and way more doors to open before you can upgrade yer gun. The black hole is a cool secondary nade and the multiple landers make the game flow more interesting imo.

yea my xbox live has been expired for a couple months now so ive just been 2 playering it up, farthest i got with just 2 people is 20 (although the second person playing is my 9 year old little brother lol)

Yeah, I played zombies maybe a few times. Didn't like it. Multiplayer all the way.

Also, as much as paying for Xbox gold sucks, it's at least moderated and reliable.

Itchin' to kill some zombags

fucking love zombies! ty to dranger and dozer for all the useful info, I referred to this thread a bunch over the last little while so my bud and I could get our shit together and last past level 13-14.

Here's a tip that's probably common knowledge if you've spent any time with zombies:

Once you get the MP40 + Stakeout combo going for a while and you have power on and enough points to upgrade one of them, DO NOT upgrade the MP40. It's such a shit gun upgraded because it runs out of ammo in less than half a round at round 15+, and you'll want to hang on to your upgraded gun for a good 5-10 rounds, depending on how hot you run at the box.

With the stakeout upgraded its a one shot kill on all zombies until ~18 and even then its not like 2 shots takes a whole lot of time if you're in a tight spot when you have Juggernaug + Speed Cola. After you upgrade the Stakeout into the Raid, pull on the box asap.

Before I pull on the box I try to keep it so I have at least 1k+ in points leftover after pulling and upgrading (in case you get knocked down it won't take a lot of time to get Juggernaug back which is the absolutely most vital thing in zombays.

while PSN was out, I made it to round 43 on kino solo the first and only time I played. the best upgraded guns are useless after like round 35 and the only way to kill zambies is traps and thundergun. I pulled a raygun outta the box on like 42 and it took like 7 shots to make a crawler. And yes, the first gun you should buy is the MP40 unless yer a super nub.

The problem with the shotguns isn't that they don't work, it's that you don't build up nearly as much points as you do with the guns with lots of bullets. This is true of the raygun also so if I pull that early, I'll still use mp40 or w/e whenever I can. The only way to make it past the later rounds is to have enough money to set off traps, constantly pull new guns from the box & upgrade them etc and you can't build up enough manies early game if you're dickin' around with shotguns and shit.

Learn the names of the guns ploz.

MP40 is the fully automatic SMG in the Foyer Room (room with the stakeout). Using pistol + knife for first 3-4 rounds is of course the standard.

I totally agree d0zer, but you can't upgrade the mp40 because its fucking garbage when upgraded and a total waste of 5k since you don't even come CLOSE to getting the 4500 needed to get more ammo.

Upgrading to the Raid is vital to me because it helps you get out of sticky situations fast (situations the mp40 cant get you out of, trapped in a corner, blocked on two sides by zombies, etc) and you only keep it until you get a 2nd really good weapon out of the box.

I like to keep one fully auto (points) weapon and one powerful, bad ass, close range weapon if possible, but obviously not required.

agree re: mp40. most of the wall guns suck to upgrade, the only one that's decent is the ak47u, but going to the alley is dildoes so you might as well just find the box after mp40 room and get something decent to upgrade. Mp40 still kicks ass until round 9+ where it starts to get a little weak so I'll usually hold down there with 2players+ until round 8 or 9 then go turn on power, whore the box up to find something worth upgrading.

Best guns to upgrade in order of awesomeness:

HK
RPK
Galil
Aug (some will say aug > galil cuz you get the shotgun attachment, and meybe it is, but galil/aug are rly close imo)
Commando
FN-FAL
G11
...
other crap that I wouldn't waste money upgrading (except for bowie knife+ballistic knives for their supermedic value or crossbow for turning into monkies, but meh I'd rather have lots of bullets to pwn with)

And re: upgrading shotguns, the HS-10 is the best shotgun to upgrade cuz you get dual weild shotgunners. spazz is the best non-upgraded shotgun tho followed by stakeout prolly.

guns like the famas, spectre, mp40, MP5k all suck to upgrade cuz they just don't have enough ammo. zambies is all about surviving the distance and you need a shitton of ammo for that.

Oh and the starting pistol is actually a surprisingly awesome upgrade cuz it turns into mustang & sally which is the double pistols that shoot grenades. if you go down with quick revive on single player you get these temporarily and can test their awesomeness but having them permanently can be a lifesaver if you respawn fresh on rnd 20 with tons of cash and no gun.
