with winning in mind - poker 2010

Obviously stats/reads are important, but anyways here's my thoughts:

-3betting or calling pre is fine, I probably lean towards a 3bet to end the hand right away instead of playing a hand OOP without initiative HU.

-I'd donk or c/r the flop, but c/c doesn't seem terrible, I just think you have to use your fold equity here, but I understand you c/r the turn to do the same thing. I really like donkbetting for 2-2.50 and probably stacking if he's willing.

-Turn as played c/r is good, but I'd feel better if it was an overcard or like a 2, 5, or 7 so we get a few more outs.

-River, I don't think you need to bet nearly this large since if he's folding, he'll fold to a smaller bet, unless you have reads that he'll fold 2nd/3rd pair to big bets on the river or something. I'd like to hear your thought process for this bet tbh.

-> dranger, nice analysis on the A3s hand. River sizing was cos this reg is never going to be expecting a bluff of this size here. Or, that was my rationale at the time. On further thought, this reg has also seen me fake-block often enough that a small (35% pot) bet is likely to be as effective.

rush omaha is proving fun - profitable too. Fully psyched on getting stacks in cos i'm rarely worse than 40% dog and fold equity is rampant!

oh dear. Middle set no good 3x in a session for >100bb a time. Ran into top set each time in situations where their range was far wider...
cashed in the ironman freeroll. Then my KTs < bb's 46o allin pre for what would have been a decent stacksize heading into mid-late stages of the tournament. Oh well, happens.

11k hands at 7ptBB/100, and another 1.25ptBB/100 in rakeback. Long may this continue. Fuck mass-multi-tabling

tldr - cliff notes = just don't tilt. No playing when drunk/hyper-caffeinated/tired etc

so, i thought i'd been running pretty bad outside of AIEV spots this month. A quick scan through HEM is quieting my moaning on that front.

i thought set over set was killing me. Turns out I'm only net -3buyins on flopped underset situations (i.e. counting the times i coolered someone else vs times they coolered me), although mine have mostly been middle set which makes folding them a lot harder...
I thought two card flush < two card flush was killing me. Turns out it's only net -4 buyins, and 2.2 of those were from one crazy 3b pot where there was irc consensus that my flush was huge against villain's range of nut flushes/sets/overpairs/two pair/random/lower flushes.

two things are killing my month.
1 = a tilt session at the beginning and another monster session i shouldn't have played about a week ago. (maybe 15 buyins? difficult to quantify, but... i can see the session tab, i know when i was playing on uber-tilt, etc)
2 = runbad in AIEV spots. (13 buyins)

Tilt is something i can control.
Runbad is something that long term averages out, so whatever.

So: May so far

i'm up about $750 in rakeback and another $75 in cashing an ironman tourney. I cleared $400 of an ironman bonus (maybe it's time to buy another). I'm $50 up on loloplo, and net 5 buyins up at the 50nl tables.

So, May is about 1/2 way through. A week ago I started playing less tables (mostly) and putting way more focus into my game. I'm feeling good about my game. I'm net up around $1525 even with huge tilt and reasonably solid runbad. What does this mean? it means that the outlook for the rest of the month is good. The runbad will average out, i just need to make sure i don't allow tilt to eat the results.

edit coupla days later: clearing another bonus, running neutral, grinding. +$2.2k in May to date.

a promising month ended up kinda meh from a dollar perspective (net just over $4k in profit - edit post-month-end tally), but i'm pretty stoked with where i've come during may 2010.

summary:
1) continued clearing some ironman bonuses - $1k worth
2) experimented with dropping tables - it works
3) solid 50nl session (50k hands) with a decent winrate after the dropping tables and i am confident that i'm a solid winner at that stake. I also note that there are only one or two regs at that stake who i feel continue to give me any trouble. If i ever need a confidence or bankroll boost i'll go 10-table da fiddies
4) i'm way better at controlling tilt, taking a break, breathing exercises, that has been important.
5) the aiev pwnage continued - slansky owes me $1.2k this month! but i gained a lot in tilt control - eventually - out of this. And if you crush the games then you should still be breakeven or better, even when your soul is being destroyed
6) i read almost all the concept of the week posts on 2+2 micro fr - some diamonds among the shit
7) i gained a lot of confidence in my game
8) rakeback...
9) table winnings unacceptably low, but still four figures
10) played some tournies. I still suck. But i've figured out that i simply needed to be more aggressive and i end up in better spots stack-wise now

i'm playing ok. Mixing 50nl and 100nl sessions, depending on how i feel. Looking forward to a huge run of positive variance. If i run AA overpair into 9999 in a 3bet pot one more time... 6bi behind expected for the month so far. Breakeven after rakeback accrued.

The runbad is forcing me to look at my game, if i had been in tip top folding form in some spots i'd still be a few buyins up for the month. So.. i must aim for that a-game consistency to be at the forefront of every poker decision i make. I feel close to the holy grail of a-game, and i'll be trading it for gold when i get there.

Planning a two month climbing trip in southeast asia and australia for october-november. Trip planning is fun!

getting there. Month is going ok after a horror start. Haven't played much, didn't really feel like it so i've been doing other stuff, back on now tho and i'll hit the 20hr mark for the month sometime soon. Properly in the black at the tables, and obviously some rake in there somewhere.

I'm on 1 million ftp points now, which is kinda funny. Wish i could use them to buy bonuses. I could buy $6k-ish in tourney entries.. or just get a few macbook pros. Decisions.

a friend of mine has just moved to brunei and has a bunch of free time = more madness in the mix for this trip i'm planning...

daven, I'd really suggest you spend it all on FTP clothing :P Or do some research and find out which product sells the best/highest and buy it and convert it to actual money.

Not in love with your flop raise because you don't need to protect and you can set up a river shove without raising the flop... but he is clearly out of line. I would just mail support with the chat and the hand number. Not much else you can do.

there's a difference between tilting someone in the chat and deliberately influencing the play of a hand like he did. i guess all you can do is report to support though.

re the hand, yep, agreed that the flop raise wasn't great...
re the chat, i wrote to FTP support. Their first response made zero sense, seems as though they were responding to some other e-mail. Typically they get it right second or third go.

misunderstanding i think - i use 'net of' to mean 'including'
i'm up about $1400 at the tables this month at 50nl/pl, take out the ridiculous spew at 6-max and i'm even running at an almost acceptable winrate on the FR tables this month. Even including that spew i'm around 2ptBB/100. I'm playing significantly fewer tables in about 1/2 of my sessions, and less than i used to in about 3/4 of them - your advice is good, and i'm on it!

Just to follow-up, how much did you make in rakeback in June roughly? Was it $2k or $2k minus $1400 for $600? I just recently switched to Tilt from Stars and I think my monthly rakeback is somewhere in the $400 to $600 range @ 100NL. If you were making $2k from rakeback @ 50NL, I think that could actually be a concern unless your winrate was decent.

I would make the 4b tad bigger in the AK hand - you really want as much FE as you can get, and you can jam any flop if you make it 20. Make a note on the sizing and fistpump 4b ATC when he makes it 5 oop next time.

dont mind the flat with JJ vs TT. when the original raiser folds, baseball will fold all the time. This would be a super awesome squeeze spot with a wide range... especially with your image.

i just played a big 50nl session and played well almost the entire session. Ended up ip vs a 90-40 whale running like god, unfortunately he left the table once he hit 1500bb. This wasn't even a deep table... anyway, i ran behind 5bi on da aiev all in that one session, to finish at -$77 at the table and down < 1 buyin if you take into the session rakeback accrued. If i can run that fucking awful and still breakeven then things must be doing ok.

I'm writing an article after a discussion with JKDS, it would be finished, but i keep on unlocking new poker dimensions that i may have half considered in the past but and suddenly really gaining insights into.

FTP have gone and changed the rules for me to withdraw, i can't go straight to my credit card now, nor use bank wire transfers. For the moment i'm using neteller to move money to another site and getting it out from there, but it's not ideal...

Anyway, i've played 6k hands over the last couple of days. Games are good. I can't win a flip to save myself, hell, i'd be happy to win an 80-20. Behind about 5BB/100 on the old all-in luck, being ahead over this sort of stretch makes me feel really good about the games, and about my game.

it may only apply to new credit cards? the card i originally had linked to FTP hit its expiry date and i can't use the new one to deposit. I was able to withdraw to the old one up until it expired - so you may be ok.

Cool month outside of poker. I moved into an amazing studio/apartment/warehouse place that i fell in love with at a party. Haven't got internet hooked up there yet cos of dumbarses - but seems that this is resulting in getting the first couple of months free and no connection fee so it's ok.
I'm about to take another week off poker, then get some grind on for a while to set me up for a month of holiday in October. Bought tickets for thailand and malaysia yesterday and am well-psyched on the trip.

cool week away in and around the city that has been home most of my adult life! Weather was pants so didn't end up heading on a climbing trip. Did play with a rifle and fill a fridge in the process though. Also got to hang out with my godson (he's a rad 18 month-old!), caught up with heaps of friends, drank truckloads of beer, etc.

Had a crazy scare last night.. Late last week I caught up with a good rock-climbing friend of mine who has been doing an alpine climbing instruction course the last couple of months and was excited about the next weekend on the mountain. Arrived back into cyber-access-land on Sunday evening after a few days out and there was a news report of a guy who had died in a fall on that same trip, same age, same instructor, name not yet released. Decided not to call him to find out whether he was alive that night (if he was, then all good, if not, then i'm not sure that whoever had his phone would feel like answering...) but had a shitty night sleep trying to convince myself it might not be him, interspersed with going through loads of memories of the last 16-ish years i've known him. Checked the news this am, he wasn't dead but he'd been on the scene. I was ecstatic that he's still alive, but felt kinda guilty in my happiness at the same time. Someone is still dead out of this. And then started thinking about how many tens of times i've read news reports around the world and hoped it's nobody i know. And realising that the times it's been someone close, i've found out from friends way before i read anything on the news. And remembering one time where i was confident a friend from ages earlier (exchange student when i was at university) was dead but decided not to ever confirm. And how amazing it was to run into her at a base-camp in Patagonia 5 years later - this ghost who wasn't and really was! Fuck mountains and their crazy dice.

In other news, i'm probably gonna head into the mountains for a winter solo transalpine trip for a week sometime mid-august - haven't done anything serious and solo since ages, argentina in cordon del plata 2007 i think must have been the last time. 3) there are still many, many fish out there. And there are even more ways to improve at poker than there are fish.

Drove to another city. Friday arvo i picked up a bike, went for an icecream-headache swim (ahh, winter in the ocean), then a party for the night. Next day was supposed to be climb - but weather meant it was a no-go. Instead spent the day designing and building a dolly that a friend wanted for filming more climbing vids (here's his latest A few days at Castle Hill on Vimeo), then subjected myself to a training session with some power-mutants. For context, it was me + three of NZ's five strongest climbers (they all climb V12+/5.14b+). I, obviously, was out of my depth but it was heaps of fun. Sunday was hanging out with cool people and now i'm back in town, it's monday, the sun is shining, and it's unlikely i'll be playing poker.

poker-wise - i hit a downswing so i'm reacting in a mature fashion.
