Actually, I'm checking out the NFL website and looking over the Lion's free agent deals so far, and it seems like they are really focusing on shoring up the defense this way (thank god, its about time).

Picked up DT Grady Jackson from the Falcons, which is a plus because we needed a big DT after releasing the Big Baby Shaun Rogers. Lets hope he can actually stop a run or two.

We need to work on the defense and O-line before we start chasing QBs around like we did receivers. Besides, Cutler is good, but I don't think he's worth a 1st overall pick.

I don't see why not, there was some cool study done on ESPN and it seems Stafford falls into the Akili Smith level of QBs coming out of college.

He has a big arm but no one mentions that his completion % for his career was like 57%, and, as the article said, QBs typically do not increase the accuracy % from college to the NFL.

under the assumption that the pats would have to send over a high pick (maybe the one from KC) AND pay a huge contract, they'd be better off not doing it. that's the problem with trading for a bigtime player-- you have to give up a high pick (or picks) and pay a huge contract. like you're giving up the ability to draft and sign maybe 3-4 quality players for one superstar (hopefully). thats why the pats and other successful teams very rarely do it.

There actually have been some studies that claim the most valuable pick in the entire draft is like the 27th pick in the 1st round or something.

Various people have tried measures of success of a players, and that's really the hardest part... how do rate steals, busts, trades, players on new teams, etc... it sound simple, but plenty of complications arise.

The main reason it's more "valuable" is due to the f'ing retarded structure of the contracts given to the top 5 picks... (getting progressively worse as you get to the #1 pick); the latter 1st round picks still get a chunk of money but are an INCREDIBLE steal compared to the top of the draft. Basically the decrease in talent doesn't fit the decrease in $$$ paid in contracts. The Lions would be pure geniuses if they could find any way to move out of the #1 overall spot.. even if it meant dropping down for a 4th rounder... the money saved on the player would be worth it.

I'm still waiting for a franchise to have the balls to just blatantly stall and let other teams pick in front of them... but that's not likely to happen. The Vikings CLAIMED they did that intentially in the 2003 draft, but I think there were several sources that claimed they actually got stuck on the phone with the Ravens or something.. and got lucky landing Kevin Williams.

If a team were interested in playing hardball right away, and nipped the problem in the bud, they'd set a standard and example for the rest of the NFL.

Although, here pretty quick the NFL will obv adopt the NBA CBA Rookie payment rule. That was pure genious.

The money given to first picks over the years have been idiotic. Somehow its gotten the notion that its a lottery: get picked first and you won, humongous contract, gg need to prove yourself capable of playing with the big boys.
We need a ton more Tony Mandarich's and Ryan Leaf's (and possibly Alex Smith's) before someone gets to his senses and actually pays a ROOKIE rookie money.

Say you picked Joe Staley in the first round this year. Numero uno pick. Give the man a $6~7M, 3 year salary plus incentives since he is fucking rookie, and if he proves himself worthy of whatever bigger money, at the end of 2nd year you reneg and give him a big fat 7 yr extension a s reward. Club does not lose money, player does win a lot of money based on his actual performance.

Um... that's not how it would work actually... by drafting him, you don't have to pay him anything, you simply hold his NFL rights for 1 year. If you don't reach an agreement on a contract, the player simply re-enters the draft the next season. What Mike Florio has advocated for teams with the #1 overall pick to offer lowball contracts to any one of the 3-4 players... and see if he can get one of them to take a 'better' deal for the team... maybe like offer Aaron Curry something like less than what the #3 pick last year made... with some inflated BS 6th and 7th year contract numbers... but not even that has happened yet.

There have actually been a few cases similar to this in baseball. See J.D. Drew.

The obvious answer is that all agents should be forced to follow the master p methods of contract negotiation.

My thinking was right outside the huge money deals in the first round which has gotten outside the top 5 and more like the top 8 or so in recent years. So, I figured the best spots to pick (in the first round) were 10-12 or so, maybe early teens.

27 isn't all the surprising though although obviously I have no idea how the study was conducted and what variables were used. One thing to consider though is that later picking teams tend to be better and have better coaching staffs. Take Haloti Ngata for instance.. the guy is an animal. If the Browns had taken him though, I'm not so sure he'd be anything special.

It's funny because the Browns have been picked in the top 5 three times of late, and Browns fans are always talking about trading down. Trade down so you stockpile picks and don't have to pay the huge contract.. the only problem is that NFL GM's typically aren't brain-dead and aren't going to give up precious drarft picks for the "right" to pay a rookie a massive contract (few exceptions here, of course).

It's funny that the fans of teams who always pick high complain that they should trade down and the fans of teams (like the Eagles) that always trade down complain that they should pick high or trade up. Lot of variance in drafting.

It is funny but it makes sense.

Teams picking high probably need more help than one star player can offer. They probably need help in a lot of areas. Better teams would tend to have fewer holes to fill, and adding a star player could easily be enough to push a good team to become a great team.
