Second thoughts: weak lead on the flop?

So I'm way behind on hours, but I'm pretty tired so I'm going to have a glass of scotch, update this thread, and go to bed.

If anyone wants cake mobnies for tilt mobnies lemme know. I don't know that anyone does, but I'd prolly do 600 cake for 560 tilt.

I've started this month running well. I've had 3 $1000 days in the first 8 days of the month, which has to be positive variance. One of those was live, which is nice, because I'm avoiding a cashout for a little while. I continue to run well playing on a full stack. I think I can play with most of the regs at 100nl and 200nl without them kicking my ass, and the fish are still profitable as hell, so I'm going to continue to do whatever my roll allows.

I wasn't going to play full stacked much at all this month, but there have been very few good tables at 600nl and 400nl on cake, so my choices are a) play bad tables, b) play only 6-8 tables short stacking, or c) play 4-6 tables on a full stack. As I learned from multiple-guess tests in high school, the answer is always c. I posted some of my more embarrassing hands in the short handed forum.

So girl = epic fail, laptop is up and running again but shaky so I cashed out a bunch and ordered a bunch of parts for my new machine. So I'm strapped for cash till I get the cashout check, but I'll be building my new desktop within a week. My back hurts like a bitch but w/o health insurance I think I'll just self medicate and sleep on the floor until it goes away (it is actually getting better, so 'whew').

My plan is to only play on cake if the games are really good (SSing 400nl and below because I cashed out most of my roll, plan is to move some to FT) and play minimum 2 hours every day on FT so when I have a roll there I also have iron man status. If the 100nl games look good on cake but the 200 and 400 ones suck, I'll prolly play 4-6 full stacked instead of 12-20 SSing.

I've been slacking off on poker a bit, but it looks like I should still be able to get iron man this month.

That cashout check is taking forever, but they finally emailed me the tracking # for it today (it's still in Canada). I don't know what went wrong with cake's old bank, but checks taking 3x as long is definitely another reason to leave the site.

I've been running horribly bad on cake and playing horribly bad on FT, so I'm dropping limits a little on both sites until I get my head screwed on straight.

While I was reading this thread, I started thinking about the kinds of reads and adjustments people make in reg wars at the upper-mid stakes. If the kind of reads and adjustments in this discussion are the norm, then I have 2 new reasons not to 20-table. 1) Regs would have more of a hand sample vs. me than vs. other regs, and they'll be able to more accurately discern my range in a given situation. 2) My adjustments will be significantly slower then thiers. Even if the goal is to break even with the other regs and beat the fish for our money, if we can't adjust right along with the regs, we'll be losing a lot of our fish-gained EV back to the other regs.

First hand = perfect

2nd hand = speeeew, def check flop behind, and if your gonna stab, stab alot smaller.


hand 3: flat preflop obv.


hand 4: weak lead on flop for like $12-14 is preety sweet, though c/c, c/r are also fine depending on villains tendencies, on turn your sizing is goot.

Hand 1: Fine, sometimes shove the flop.
Hand 2: Flop bet is fine. Call the shove because making marginal folds for lots of money that are close to zero EV will encourage others to lean on you.
Hand 3: Usually flat pre-flop. As a mix-up it's fine.
Hand 4: Whatever. It's fine.

I recorded a half hour of my play with commentary. It's 4 tabling 50nl. If anyone would be interested in checking it out and getting back to me with comments, I'd really appreciate it. This goes for everyone btw, microgrinders included. The sound is lagged and a little muffled but with the volume turned up it worked fine for me. Unfortunately It came out to 1.4gigs. I'll lower the video quality of the next video and probably use smaller tables. If anyone wants it I suppose I could just email it to you. gmail ftw. Thanks!

I think you're doing something wrong producing the vids though, the raw file should be around 1 gig, but the final one should be significantly smaller. I assume you're using Camtasia? Try this production setting:

Leave the rest the same. You can also make them smaller dimensions without harming quality too much, just tick the Custom Size - Maintain aspect ratio option on that tab and make them anywhere down to half the width (and height should adjust automatically).

I'm using camstudio, the rar'd versions are so much smaller that I assume the audio is in wav format. Maybe I'll look into camtasia. Sending you the rars now.

If you want a mind-fuck sort of way to think about the quad kings vs. 5s full hand... If I can call the river thinking you might have a flush or a bluff than you can bet a flush on the river thinking I might not have a boat.

Seriously tho, I'm not really THAT bad, it was the worst call I've made in recent history.

Oh, and that hand feels quite exploitable by the OOP Scandinavian bluff. First time playing with him I'd probably not give him credit though, but then again, first time playing vs someone I am a little more careful with overpairs.

Check behind turn, bet river, reassess.
Vs. people I have never played before, I prefer info over money.

It looks like you stopped asking yourself why you're betting and what you expect to get called by.

reasons for betting:
hand 1) called by pair/draw combinations. Clear fold after I get raised, it didn't seem so clear earlier.

2) value, called by draws and lower pairs. I'd expect a raise a lot of the time I'm beat.

3)see above, another clear river fold I think. I did fold it, so :shrug:

4) no bets

5) This is pretty much a pure bluff because I don't expect to get called at all. The lead out is so weak coming from this type of player that I decided I'd just take it away.

6) flop: value. turn: value from draws, kind of questionable. If I check am I openning the door for a draw to bluff me off my king?

Hand 3 seems really thin. You're pretty much hoping to be called by a 6 or a J which is unlikely after 3 streets by you.

Hand 5 I'd like more if you called it protection than bluff ;).

Hand 6 given you end up c/c'ing river anyway, I think checking back turn and c/c any non :h: river is better.

The reason I can't call hand 5 protection is that I can't take or apply any heat at all on the turn or river. If called or raised, I'm dead to 2 outs.

I've been running pretty well in B+M and I've been meaning to play more live poker, so I'm going with that. I'll probably just keep up iron man and maybe play a few sessions here and there on cake, but I'll be at the woods 3 or 4 times a week so I wont be putting in a ton of hours.

I'll try to do 4-6 tables of 50 or 100nl every day for iron man and post hands here. If I don't have time then I'll just short stack out the feeps. I really don't want to do that anymore...

I used to be pretty much a laggtard before and after the flop. I think the reason I calmed down preflop and started getting more comfortable in weird spots post-flop is the regs at cake. I short stacked the mid-stakes games there for so long I saw a lot of post-flop play that just blew me away. I spent more time reviewing the stats and big hands of the good regs than I did reviewing my own play (SSing is so dull anyway).

I was going to do another vid but my throat is really sore. I've been 6 tabling 50nl on FT and switching out the bad or mediocre tables 2 at a time.

I'm teetering between 50nl and 100nl BR-wise, so instead of stressing over it I'll just check my BR at the beginning of a session and go wherever it tells me to.

I'm finding myself going a little crazy with the more agro fish. There was one that just ran way too good against me, and I countered by paying him off over and over. So there! It sucks to lose a few buyins to a complete moron. He ran like 45/9/7/100ish but I managed to get most of the money in while I was behind. The worst was the first big hand I played against him, I barreled 3 streets and he called down with 22 unimproved.

I'm having trouble dealing with people minraising my cbets. I used to minraise a lot of cbets when short stacking on cake, but only because a minraise on the flop commits my entire stack. When people do it deeper I just find myself taking odds and basically showing my hand strength by calling.

Just watched a Vital Myth leakfinder video on cardrunners where he talked a lot about bet sizing. I'm going to focus a bit on that for a while and see if I can eek out an extra bb/100 or so.

Made my 2nd and 3rd 50nl videos, they're about half an hour long. There's a few interesting spots, but I think the first one was more interesting. Hopefully that means I'm playing well... You decide! This isn't really logical. We're building a pot when we're behind? Betting could be the correct play, but it can't be just to build a pot against a range that beats us. Implied odds -might- make up for it, but think of how scary the board is after we hit.

Hand 6 - V was a player who seemed to be the type to 4 bet loose but I didn't have enough history to be sure. On top of that I took down the previous pot with a similar 3bet of the same loose raising fish. I kinda defaulted to a call when I hated both a fold and a raise, even tho calling could possibly be the worst of the three.

On the turn I figured I can't call anything and he can easily steal the pot with anything that I beat if I check to him twice. I picked a raise size that doesn't cost me much but still looks credible.

If I was happy about how I played it then it probably wouldn't be here, so take all this with a grain of salt. Looking back, I think the 5bet shove option was best.

assuming stats are vpip-pfr-AF-hands?

hand 1 - with villain's stack size I like this, assuming your play means that you put villain on a weak min-steal-4-bet range. Otherwise I consider folding pre cos this is aces without reads.

hand 2 - 3-bet pre bigger cos you're deep and out of position etc. As played villain's range is so wide - he's in position and deep. He beats AK or he's bluffing, so his range is 44/TJ/flushes/air. Not many flushes cos you have the ace. I make a high variance river call.

hand 3 - check turn behind and be ready to fold river unimproved.

hand 4 - punish the sb limper and raise pre. Turn raise to $4, call river

hand 5 - i don't mind folding this flop, i also don't mind calling. Expect to see KT/22/JQ/KQ

hand 6 - i give up. Sometimes it's ok to give up. You gave up pre-flop by calling pre-flop out of position and without set odds anyway. Bet $17 if you're going to bet.

hand 7 - pre-flop good. Flop good. Turn I do this a lot and I think it's a leak. Post the hand in the SH forum

hand 8 - wtf bet flop $4-$5.

cos c-betting is good. Hell, you effectively put in cbet money anyway on a turn that paired the board and turned your draw into scary reverse implied odds territory. He's not c-raising any of his range on the flop so you get a free turn if you c-bet. People have crazy calling ranges sometimes, he may even call 66. You disguise your hand when the flush hits, he'll stack off with 66 when 6s comes. If he does cr then you shove with huge equity and tilt-a-fish who is the dead money you want to be targeting anyway. You want this fish to think you're an aggro bastard who stole his money. You want him plotting to get it back during the next few orbits. Etc...

So Monday I had a hell session. I ran horribly bad, and when I was going to end the session I didn't because there were some prize fish on my tables. Those prize fish continued to walk on water against me for an extra hour or so. I was going to post a rant with HHs, but I decided it wasn't really worth it. That shit just happens.

The last 2 days went pretty well, I was playing 100nl again today and won a couple buyins.

My poker thoughts:
1) I bumhunt. I sit at the loosest tables I can find and leave if I don't have position on an awful limping and calling mess. I thought about something the other day tho. I was at a table where the two players on my left were loose and passive, and the three to my right were all taggy. I was about to leave the table and then I realized that when I'm in the CO or button, I had position on the worst of the 2 fish. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that position relative the the fish doesn't matter quite as much as I had originally thought. Some positions are better than others, but If the fish is there, you can get your shots in on him.

2) So people just throw money at you sometimes. There's really no need to force anything.

3) People aren't getting hyper agro with draws as much as I'm used to. I find myself spazzing out with like TPGK on drawy boards. I can let those hands go a bit more than I have been.

I just recorded a 100nl ssession. There were a bunch of interesting spots, so I'd love to get some reviews on it. PM me for the link.

I felt like a 3bet quite a bit, but my 3bet stat was only like 6%. So... I'm still working out how it can be more profitable it is to 3bet a PFR rather than flat in position and play a flop.

Slowing down on draws seems like the new cool thing to do. Give it three more months and going nuts on bare FDs will be awesome with perceived ranges strengthening atm. Today theres little to do for me at work, pm me the link if u want me to have a look at it.

Played a morning session online, won 360. Roommate wanted to go to the sun, so I went to mohegan, won 970 in 1:40 on the best live table I've ever seen. Went to the woods to check on some friends and made another bill. I hung out with other friends and played a 40 buyin drunken cash game and won 160.

Shipped a partners tourney yesterday playing omaha 8/b while my partner played the limit HE portion. It was a cash tourney with a satellite-style prize pool, the prizes were (per team) 4k, 4k, 4k, $222. We chopped 4 ways for a profit of $1328/person. I'll take it. That's $3g in 3 days. Playing live, this kind of stuff happens, but then it's -$2g in 4 or 5 days, and you feel sick.

My goal of playing more live poker this month has worked out pretty well. I still need 5 more days at 200fpp/day for iron man this month, so I'll be finishing that up and maybe playing one good 5 hour day online to finish off the month.

Well we have position, so normally what I do with a FD out like this is call turn if he bets, or bet turn if he checks (assuming its a blank). Rivers a bit more interesting if he checks and its blank. I probably check behind then kick myself when he shows KQ or something.

i got halfway through that last vid and have scrawled down loads of notes. I'll finish it and send it through this week.

For now, some hands...

1) AJ i like. Raising flop for value perhaps? Definitely check river behind.
2) AQ wow. You're pretty sure about that FD/88 risk huh? Pre-flop good. Flop good. Turn I probably raise to $20 often.
3) A2 Villain is usually gonna be raising flop with nut flush draw, so I bet-fold turn. As played bet-fold river.
4) JQ I'm lost. I'm not sure about your penchant for c-c turn though.
5) 77. Calling vs wide ranges oop.. what's his c-bet frequency? are you bluffing on the turn? River will generate a fold from fish and decent players, and a call with JJ type of hands from mediocre players.

QJ hand is such a tweener that I'm not really sure either. This is one hand where I didn't actually c/c the turn tho.

77 hand... I accidentally switched the stats on these two hands.
On the flop I figured it missed his range a lot and hit mine some. On the turn I figured he'd have floated the flop and I wanted to charge him to draw or get him off of 2 overs. On the river, since he only flatted the flop and turn, I figured I had repped a ten pretty well, so I bet again expecting a fold from almost his entire range. Should he be showing up with a T here ever?

About the c/c turn thing...
I think I'm finding myself with hands with showdown value that I bet oop on the flop and want to pot control. So I check, then it's like opening the door for a bluff, so I'll c/c the turn and 50/50 c/c river or c/f river.

b/f turn is probably better in a lot of spots. I didn't realize how often I'm missing obvious bet/fold situations until Ben reviewed that first 50nl vid I did.

Shortly after this pot I donned my blue helmet.

On the flop, I literally looked at the board and thought to myself, "I don't want to stack off here" and then I proceeded to stack off... I haven't done anything like that in a while, it's unnerving. So I took yesterday off and I'm back to play today.

So I got home last night sober and decided to get my iron man play in then, so I did. I woke up early this morning and felt like mixing things up so I fired up some donkaments. I just don't have the stamina for these damn things. I was out of the only big one in the first blind level, and I'm kind of glad. Now I just have a few smaller, quicker ones, and it's still taking too fucking long.

I normally play <1 hr/session. This MTT stuff is just too much.

+$576.50 on the day for donkaments. Good stuff, but I doubt I'll be doing this more than a couple times a month.

I do that donkament thing about once a month also. Unlike you though my problem is I play them too tight. I can easily fire 2-3 and only play 1-2 hands in the first hour and sit there bored as hell wondering why the heck I thought this would be fun.

I'm really agro early in tourneys, especially online. Most of the big-edge plays we have are for later in the tourney. You make your money at bubble time at end game, so earlier on I'll mess around a lot with possibly bad plays. I trust reads very early and try to pigeon-hole players. If I am right, I build a stack, if I'm wrong, I fire up another tourney. It might drop my ROI a bit, but it will increase my $/hr.

I posted in Jym's op about interval training and breaks and I think I should be taking my own advice. I've considered setting up some kind of work day where I devote a certain block of time to poker. If I devote 6 hours to poker say between 1pm and 7pm, then I'd pregame for 5 minutes or so, then play for an hour, take a quick break, either review or play again or post hands right up to 7pm, then call it a day. Without structure I'm finding myself not playing or posting or reviewing much at all.

Ben was posting about opening up a bit and turning into a nit. I've recently opened up a bit OOP and really not tried to change my ranges from late position at all and here's the last 10k or so:

what would be the advantages to opening up oop?

Well, suppose you're only playing AA from atg, then adding KK would make your overall game more profitable.

Basically I was just saying that I was a bit too tight from UTG and I was missing out on some +EV situations.

No thoughts on the hhs?

lol yeah, that would be looking at it on a basic level.

I think there may be a point where adding more hands starts to lower ones earn: i.e. the law of diminishing returns. I suck at explaining it so there is always google/wikipedia if you are unfamiliar.

As long as you don't pass that point you should be fine of course, if you know you need to open up a bit just don't stretch it - but I'm sure you're aware of this :D

You're both right. Interestingly it doesnt take that many hands to balance an UTG range for instance. If your 'value' range is 4% then you only need to open 8% total to have 50/50 value/bluffs.

HHs generally look good to me. Hand 1 I suck at knowing what to do with 3-bet bluffs postflop, so I go either way here. At worst its never too bad just to play them purely for their EV preflop. 2,4 and 5 all look fine as played, NHs. 3 is the really interesting one, and you really need to know his postflop tendencies to answer it though. As a default I probably call flop fold turn, but if he's particularly aggro we could call down.

Op news:
I only short stack now when I don't really feel up to the challenge of playing. Getting 200 points for iron man takes about 5-10 minutes less when I short stack, but that's not really enough to give up full stacking if I feel I can play.

I've only had 2 shortstacking sessions this month and I've played all but one day. So if the main objective of this op was to get into mostly full stacked poker, it's complete.

Who the hell wants to short stack when people are capable of doing this?

I'm interested in your bet sizing here. I thought we 3bet at least to 3x but more like 3.5x-4x when OOP, and is that how much you typically cbet in 3bet pots? There could obv. be a number of factors associated with sizing so I'm just curious about your thought process.

The biggest factor in my decision to bet $20 was that it was a PL table (I think it should be 22, but yeah PL). I would normally go closer to 4x here.
