The hardest part of all is sticking to a lifestyle change for long enough for it to make a difference. Take it all in small steps - do things like get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way; walk up stairs instead of getting the lift/elevator.
Whatever you choose to do though, stick at it.
Oh, and it's probably best to wait for the new year. trying to drop weight before Xmas is just a no-no.
and one last thing - drinking is probably the sole biggest cause for weight gain. Trust me. Trying to cut down on beer is tough - but you need to do it. Try only having a few and then drinking shots for the rest of the night but bear in mind that if you have mixers, they are full of crap too - they need to be diet.
gl gabe.
I cant gain weight, but that might hcange now that Im in my new apartment. My brother and his freind are my roomates and Im pretty sure its gonna be a diet of beer and take out, with a little bit of unhealthy cooking mixed in (think taco night with undrained ground beef ftw.) My brothers freind also has a gym membership, I might get one too.
anyways theres this costarican restaurant half a block from here, Im hungry, gonna go get some food, holla.
hard liqour isn't really a calorie improvement, I used to think the same thing, unless you're balla and drinking straight you're probably better off with beer.

i now weight 180 (was 179 yesterday morning). i owe it all to getting mono and having no appetite for 3 weeks. thanks mono!
People with lower incomes generally eat more poorly than people with higher incomes. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. are considerably more expensive than canned, pre-packaged and processed foods. I don't live in the greatest neighborhood and it never ceases to amaze me the kind of crap I see people loading their grocery cart with when I go to the local store.Quote:

I'm in pretty much the same boat. Its the beer thats killing me, I started drinking 3-4 beers a night 4 nights a week just like you back in december when I turned 21. I've probably gained 10 lb since.
Worse, once the girlfriend finally acquired the taste for beer, shes joined me.
Switching to mixed drinks and Single Barrel Jack on the rocks is my plan. And holy shit, single barrel is amazing. Dont you dare put coke in it.
Edit: And I'm still just under 170 lb and about 6' tall. I really dont weigh much but I carry everything in my belly which makes it look far worse than it is. I've got absolutely no muscle mass though. I'm just like what 'rilla said, if I spent a few sessions in the gym I'd have an awesome physique. But I have no motivation. The belly has started to bother me more and more though. I'll probably start rollerblading or something, I used to play hockey so its a comfortable excersize for me even if I look a little queer.
I remember when i was hospitilized for some weird sickness i lost 20 pounds (and since i was avg weight already i became underweight).
i could use a deep dish hawaiian pizza right about now yo...
I hit 192lbs today and I'm hoping to hit the duece by summer! I was there once through the legitimate way. This time I'm just eating a lot and being lazy. Maybe I'll lift a little just because I can see myself being that guy with the bigger body and weak arms hanging at the sides.
Hey, let's get some "get in shape" prop bets going, I'll definately need some motivation to workout more when I get back from Mexico, and prop bets are fun.
I remember your old fitness thread and how I was so involved in it at the time. Since moving to Vegas I've probably put on 30 lbs (still look OK as I was at about 6% bodyfat before hand) and I wouldn't dare say much of it was muscle. Turning 21 the day I came out here didn't help much either as I would venture to say I average like you 4-5 beers a night 5-6 nights a week. Kinda sucks but Im moving away soon and I hope I can regain my passion for fitness and dieting again.Quote:

KillThatInfidel, any cardio plus stomach excercises will do the trick. Make sure you workout before you eat.
Alright, i haven't read any of these posts yet but i can tell you cardio is overrated. You see the treadmill junkies 2 hours a day everyday, and they really get nowhere. The fatties I mean.
The best way to lose weight is exercise and diet. Go the your grocery and pick up a ton of vegetables, canned tuna (yum, staple), leaner meats, whole weat pastas and breads, margarine. You can live off that prety much. Nothing strict, you can buy many, many other things; but thats the thinking.
The other part is exercise. The best way to go is to weight train, and do it hard. Be sure to stretch and warm up first, othersie your going to hurt yourself. So a couple short sets of heavy weights, 2-3 times a week. You can mix in cardio into your routine as yes it does burn calories, but it also gives a good workout to your legs, and after the natural relaxation gives you better sleep, which you need to build muscle.
Im not saying turn into the hulk, but as you gain muscle, your metabolism increases, and you burn fat that way. Eventually, you become lean and toned; and thats what your probably going for.
know your role then fattys
Jishu, weight training won't lose weight. Even if you build the muscle you will still have all that fat covering it. Have you seen professional body builders in their off season when they're not posing for magazines or competitions? They just look like fat guys.
The reason the cardio junkies don't lose weight is because they're doing it wrong too. Their bodies are used to the routine as they don't change it or challenge themselves constantly. Once the body can handle that routine, it sees no reason to change. Cardio's no different than weightlifting in the way when you lift weights you have to keep upping the amount to keep gaining the muscle; in cardio, if what you're doing isn't as hard as it used to be anymore, you gotta start pushing it until it hurts again.
I completely disagree with this.Quote:

The problem with old "standard" diets is they cut out the fat by cutting out the protein (meats, etc). So they would loose muscle mass and their metabolism would drop, when they failed at the diet they would gain weight faster because of this.
Lifting heavy weights to failure(low reps) is the BEST way to burn fat. It has been proven and cardio is overrated.Quote:

At one point in time I was only consuming 1500 calories in a day while working out twice a day 6 times a week for 45 minutes each time. That's when I got down to 145lbs and about 8% body-fat. I then moved to Vegas, drank my ass off for 10 straight months and ballooned to 190lbs. I've since got myself back down to my normal weight of 165lbs with probably 15% bodyfat. However, I've done it with just diet, zero workout at all which makes me feel sluggish and tired all the time. I definitely need to do some weight-training.
FWIW, I told Trainer (who, believe it or not, was a PT) I was going to go on a diet and he suggested I put on 4-5lbs of muslce first to jumpstart my metabolism. So ther, take it from the source, weight training will help.
I'm definately not formally educated in the subject, but I'm just going on what I know. I didn't mean weaight lifting is pointless. But from the sounds of it, you guys are saying all it takes is power lifting and building some muscle, then the rest takes care of itself. I think that's got to be completely wrong.
Yes muscle builds up metabolism but that's not going to do everything. To get rid of fat you need to use energy, because that's what fat is, stored energy. Power lifting does take enery obviously, but it doesn't use as much as a cardio excercise would. Power lifting you're working until the particular muscle you're focussing on is exhausted, not your energy levels.
Whatever the case, someone needs to page Trainer, he knows his shit and can set us straight.
Trainer's diet consists of Rockstar energy drinks and 8 month old babies.
He's like a python, he does that twice a month and he's good.
Your body uses MUCH MUCH more energy rebuilding the muscles you damaged lifting hard than energy spend doing cardio.Quote:

Ok, back on topic. If you're going to do cardio...what's is called.....HIT cardio. High Intensity Training. Sprinting with minimal breaks will keep your heart rate sky high and will force your body to recover like it would after a weight training session meaning you'll be burning calories long after you're done. Also, it doesn't take forever to do, I used to full out sprint for 30 sec, walk for a minute, sprint 30 seconds, walk a minute. I would cover one mile in sprints, so about 8-9 times meaning a workout was over in under 15 minutes, and damn, that worked really well.
If I got bored of running I would either
A: swim
B: jumprope like Rocky
C: chase a chicken around like Rocky

I am just not a big fan of running.
There are better options with gym memberships, but if you're looking to do it on a college budget - surely, running is a great way to go.
its even better for ur knees in basketball shoes, i left my other ones at my parents house :|
COLLEGE BUDGET heh
e-bill owns u more than me, last semester, right?
if jogging six miles a week messes up your knees then you have shitty knees to begin with
maybe if he was suggesting 60 miles a week you'd be right to worry about his knees

I never said that jogging 6 miles a week was the answer to everyone's weight problems, I was just disputing your claim that it would ruin people's knees. I agree with most of what you've written in this thread but maybe you could just admit that you were wrong instead of putting up a straw man?Quote:

Things that hold you back from losing wieght and/or cause you to gain weight that I have seen or read about as "healthy" or ok here and elsewhere, and some things to avoid.
1) Margarine ( JUST DON"T EAT IT) eat butter if you want butter.
2) Aspartame
3) "Good Carbs" (They aren't what you think.)
4) Alcohol ( Fat free is never enough)
5) Sugar/Fructose ( this means fruit)
6) MSG ( this is not the only name it goes by)
7) Soy ( how do you like your estrogen levels)
This is just a start. Here's a list of things that can be eaten, pretty much whenever you have to eat.
1) Whole eggs ( Cholesterol is very misunderstood and most doctors are wrong.)
2) Oils ( Canola, Safflower, olive)
3) Beef
4) Butter (real butter with ingreideents that say "Cream and salt"
This isn't the only menu choices for a weight loss diet, just that a lot of people with weight problems need to stop listening to the " I've done this for 20 years" crowd and understand that they have different metabolisms predisposed to higher spiking insulin levels and a lower tolerance for sugars in the diet. Most have problems getting their body's to switch on to a fat burning metabolism for weight loss. Slow go cardio will never do it for them. There are some specific things that must be done for someone with a problem gaining weight or trying to lose, and it doesn't start with a treadmill and a fat free, low calorie diet. I am not saying don't do cardio, I'm saying it should be done a certain way and only as an extra aid, there are better, healthier, faster and much less stressful things that can be done in about half the time.

This means that the food companies can just make their serving sizes smaller instead of making their products healthier. If hydrogenated oil is one of the ingredients then there is trans fat in the product.
Actually it's obviously not very common thinking as illustrated by this thread. Go ahead, use this as your cardio. I'm not saying some jogging couldn't be mildly-beneficial, it's just ridiculously less-beneficial then most other forms of excercise.Quote:

secondary point was that i think you underestimate the importance of jogging or cardio in general. like I said, I really don't do any but if I should and if I were training somebody, nutrition, resistance training, a good sleep schedule, and cardio would all be integrated into that training.
I haven't underestimated cardio at all man, I said earlier in this thread that when I was in awesome shape I was doing some sort of excercise for 2+ hours a day.
You are overestimating what jogging for 2 miles will do for anyone. Now, running 5 min miles might help but not just aimlessly jogging for 2 miles 3 days a week. If you're just going to do 2 miles walking is just fine.
ok
I used to play soccer too and found myself in a similar situation.
You likely won't be able to keep going to a gym regularly, the rate of people who can is VERY low. I suggest doing what used to work -- playing soccer. Find a local for fun team and you'll easily get back in shape playing twice a week.
