You're re-raising too small on wet boards and playing too many rivers on wet boards when you get it in on the turn.

Hand 1
I understand in the heat of battle when there is a flow and reads @ work, that optimal play may be completely different without knowledge of the flow or reads. However, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense just looking at it for face value. If you have a REALLY good read that AKo is good here, hats off to you, but wow, you'd have to know villain has no 3, Q, 8, 2, pocket pair, or two spades. The pre-flop and first flop cbet are all fine, but as soon as you get raised, you have to re-evaluate how far you want to go with this hand. You should probably read the section on commitment threshold in Professional No Limit Volume I. Basically, you don't want to put in more than 1/3 of your stack unless you are committed to a hand. You also have to be careful about putting in 10% of your stack because it's a warning that you are near the commitment threshold.

In this hand, in my mind, you are NEVER committed. You have just ace high by the river. After you call the flop re-raise, you have put in $1.25, which is 14% of your stack, which is over 10% and means any reasonable bet close to pot will put you over the commitment threshold, which basically means you should be prepared to go all-in and feel like it's the right play. So, what do you do on the turn? YOU, not your opponent, voluntarily put yourself into the commitment zone with a bet that puts you at almost exactly 1/3 of your starting stack ($0.30 + $0.95 + $1.50 = $2.75) -> $2.75/$8.44 = 32.6%. Your villain raises and you still call. Maybe you rationalized pot odds or implied odds to make a call thinking the flush or even an over pair would win you the pot, but that logic only might stand if you aren't helping inflate the pot. Calling the flop raise is debatable, but you should have checked the turn and definitely not called the raise. The bet and call on the river looks really spewy.

Hand 2
Flop bet looks good and you may consider a re-raise on a board that wet. Just ship it all-in on the turn. River sucks. By the way, you seem to get raised in a lot of these hands on boards that don't seem to warrant it. You should evaluate your image and play and determine if you're happy with it. I suspect you are betting and raising too light and your opponents are catching on and putting you in tough spots. Maybe fold more and don't cbet so often.

Hand 3
Pre-flop, Flop, and Turn are textbook. Through planning or luck, you had your bets sized perfectly to get it all-in by the river. The only problem is the river is a deal breaker. It completes the obvious flush your villain might have been staying in the hand for. You have a blocker and maybe your hand is good, but you have to ask yourself, what was villain sticking around with? There are bad villains that will pay you off with AQ, KQ, and maybe even QT, but the flush plus QQ, 77, 99, TT all have you beat. Without a good read, this is a fold. Hands change. You were prepared to get it all-in before the flush, but now you have to reevaluate. Are you good here 30% of the time? It seems doubtful to me.

Hand 4
Seems pretty standard. I'd expect you to win that hand most of the time. It's hard to imagine a hand that has you beat never raising at least once during the action. Most would probably have a weak flush or ace.

Hand 5
Again, two pair hands can be hard to play and are largely player dependent - against good, tight, deep opponents, I think it's best not to go broke with them if you can avoid it. You pretty much decided after the flop that you were playing for stacks - if the villain was pretty loose and aggressive, maybe that's a good play, but keep in mind that you had plenty of opportunities to keep the pot smaller if that was best play.

Hand 6
Also seems standard against 60BB stack. I may have advocated a flop or turn check if you were deeper. I'd expect to be good here more times than not.

Hand 7
The stack to pot ratio pre-flop pretty much committed you to this hand, which should be a long term good play if you feel like you won't chase out too many worse hands pre-flop and get enough value post flop. I'd also expect to be good here more times than not.

I'm not sure what to think about my play for May.

Do these few hands indicate a player that sux so bad to lose 21 BIs in a month? Or was my 10% stop loss much to high? Or both?

I knew I sucked but I didn't think I sucked that bad. I've played well over 100k hands at 10NL. If I did anything else 100k times I would probably be pretty good at it by now.

For the last few days I've been playing as 20/17/2.8 over 2800 hands but I'm still having the same results.
Up a big pot, up a big pot, lose via suckout or cooler, cold cards forever, up a BI, lose from spew, repeat daily.

I'll be at the beach starting Saturday for a week. No poker.

I'll be spending most nights sitting on the beach fishing, drinking a cold one and reflecting on work and poker. I think I need a vacation from May poker as much as I need one from work. That just ain't right is it?

I'd say try to stop thinking in terms of results or if you're a good or bad player and just think about how to get better. Before you posted these hands, your posts seemed to suggest that you are just unlucky, but we've clearly illustrated many spots where you're losing value, giving away value, or just plain spewing. Focus on your next 10k hands to drastically change that. I also think there are some tilt issues @ work plus twice I've pointed out you weren't sticking to what I consider solid bankroll management. When you play, think about how your score would be with those things, and not the actual value of your bankroll.

Breaks can be very good actually. I take breaks all the time and don't focus on volume as much as I do quality play.

Even when I'm playing my 24/20 Laggy-TAGG 6max style, I open < 10% of my hands UTG and only 13 - 14% MP (all for raises).

Try ditching 22 - 66 and KQo/AJo and worse from your UTG range. I do open AJs and KQs. It's just so much easier to play EP hands if you're playing good ones.

OK, UTG opening range ~ 10% for me is:

88+ (48 combos)
AK, AQ, AJs, KQs (40 combos)
25% of 22 - 77 (~= 9 combos)
98s - 65s (16 combos)
A2s - A5s (24 combos)

137 combos when ~133 would be 10%.

I don't suggest the Ace-rag suited until you have the rest of the range playable. I suggest starting with only 1 or 2 sc's and get used to playing them oop. They play better than small pp's UTG 'cuz they hit 2 pair+ almost as often as pp's hit sets, and they build nice draws and combos enough to cbet and often fire a 2nd barrel where a small pp is pretty much dead after air + cbet.

When you're competent with 3 or 4 sc's, then add like A4s/A5s to get used to playing them oop. When I'm playing A5s, I actually want to hit the 5 or a FD, or both, and play my draw. I think of A5s on a K85 board as a 5-out draw. Sure, the pair of fives is good sometimes, but you can't really barrel on it. Hitting the Ace is VERY dicey.

Still, even with some sc's and Ace-rag, I think at 10nl you should be opening < 10% UTG.

I don't open A2s+ even in MP - I wait for the CO before I play them all.

I think you need to get more experience playing certain kinds of hands from UTG before you add all of them in. Just my $.02.

Went on vacation for a week to the "Redneck Rivera" (i.e., Panama City Beach, Fl)

Didn't think about poker much.

Remember I took all but $150 out and played at 10NL until it was down to $120 then dropped to 5NL. By the time I left for vacation my BR was at $62. I was totally disgusted with poker at that point.

When I got back, I decided that once I got below $60 I would drop to 2NL but I would not play a single game until I did some studying.

Here's what the plan was:
1.) Review lots of HHs and lots of videos-Done
2.) Open IRC whenever playing-Done
3.) Open 2 or 3 tables only and try to take more notes.-Done
4.) Not be such a nit-Done

Last few nights have been good (up about 7BIs) and I even posted a couple of HHs in IRC for review and got some good feedback.

We'll see how things go from here. And I haven't had to drop to 2NL.

I'm still doing well. I'm up 3 more BIs from last night. I like to think it's because I'm playing better but I am (finally) getting some cards. This game is easy when you know you have the best hand but I guess the question is how do you know when you have the best hand.

I've watched bjaust's video several times and it has helped alot. It was a big "Duh Moment" when I realized that when passive players bet, I'm usually beat. I also stopped folding so much on the river with a fairly good hand.

I was also questioning my hand when an over card was on the board. If I had QQ and the board was A49r I would always assume villian had the A and fold to any bet.

I realized that I should stop doing this while on vacation. In between rummy games (which I hate), I would deal 6 hands face up just to see what cards came up and see which was best pf, then turn flop cards, turn , then river.

I am playing TAGG poker, exploiting villians, betting big with big hands and betting small with small hands. I tightened my range up UTG and opens up quite a bit from CO and BTN. I'm thinking more about value bets and definitely thinking more about ranges. I'm also folding when I probably beat and not folding when a player's tendencies indicate I may be ahead.

3. Am I properly bankrolled for a full shot at the next level?

No but I've played 10NL for many hands. If I 2-table 10NL I'm risking $5 more than 3 tabling 5NL. Plus I think I'm playing solid poker now. I have not tilted at all since returning from vacation and I have definite had reason to. This was affecting me the most I believe previously.

4. Am I prepared to move down if I lose?

Absolutely. I'm a move down king by now.

I think you initially, correctly answered the question. :) If you played at a level and dropped down, if anything you should add more buy-ins before you move up, definitely not less. The eagerness to move up before you have the bankroll is a form of tilt - being too eager. This will have two drawbacks. You won't give yourself a full shot and you'll be MORE disappointed if things don't go to plan and more results oriented in general. Think about it. If you aren't too eager or too results oriented, the thought of moving up too soon wouldn't even come up. Remember, bankroll management is NOT about how well you are playing - it's to help you have staying power when the results are not indicative of your good play. You've started to get momentum back, which is great. I say stick to the plan and stay @ $5NL until you have $300 and if not $300, then $350 ;) Good luck, though either way.

I think the circumstances are different here as I wasn't forced to move down in stakes. I was still over rolled for 10NL at the time of withdrawal (I had $435 in the BR when I withdrew all but $150).

Even when my BR was at $61, I would have had $346 as a BR without the withdrawal.

Is it against BR Management to re deposit money you withdrew earlier when you tilted?

I think I'll finish out June at 5NL though then take it from there.

It's not against BRM to redoposit money...that can actually be seen as PART of your bankroll. Your bankroll is any money you're WILLING to lose in poker. Just because you don't have it on PokerStars (or Full Tilt or whatever) doesn't mean it isn't part of your bankroll.

Fwiw, I moved up to 10NL at $200. I understanding wanted to get the hell out of 5NL and into 10NL. I even felt that way at 10NL (and I finally am feeling comfortable at 25NL). With a bankroll this small, you have less to protect. I don't mind seeing being more aggressive with this bankroll. Understand that as your bankroll grows, you have more to protect. Therefore, bankroll management criteria becomes higher. I will not even THINK about playing 50NL at $1000 (even though it is 20 buy-ins). Why not? It took me a good amount of time to make that $1000...I have more to protect. Thirty buy-ins sounds about good for 50NL.

Moral of the story: smaller bankroll - more aggressive. Bigger bankroll - more conservative.

If you have solidly beat $5NL and deposit enough to give you 30 buy-ins, then I guess no one could fault you, but don't forget the sequence of events that led you here. You were playing $10NL, not getting the results you wanted, withdrew that money out of frustration, and moved down stakes. I think moving down was a good decision of which you are now seeing the fruits of your labor. I think it would be a mistake to try to circumvent the process by moving up too soon or just depositing more money. Part of the fun and proving you can beat a level is actually getting all the money to move up from beating the level. In my operation, I specifically mentioned I would only move up with money made from the stakes I was playing, using the example if I ever cashed in a large MTT or was part of a milestone hand and won a lot of money, that that money would NOT count towards my bankroll to move up.

Obviously, you have to do whatever you think is best for you, but from what I've seen, you have had some history with bankroll in not heeding a 5% bankroll one day stop loss and also history @ $10NL not getting the results you wanted. There's no time like the present to stick with the program ;)

moved up to 10NL at $220
Dropped back down to 5NL after BR hit $150
Moved back to 10NL at $300
Moved up to 25NL at $650
Moved back to 10NL at $470
Tried 25NL again at $650
Moved back down to 10NL at $500
BR hovered around $600 until May when I really started losing at 10NL

NOTE: I was really putting alot of pressure on myself to move up at this point as I was seeing lots of FTR'ers move up quick (i.e., dranger and m2m) and I was getting really frustrated. I think I played 35k hands in May which is waaay too many for me with family, work, etc. so I was always tired and playing too many tables.

At $435 I tilted and withdrew $285 and started playing 5NL

After looking at this I seemed to get money scared ar 25NL quickly. I wasn't waiting until the BR hit $300 before moving back down but then again I was moving up before the BR hit $750 too.

I also don't play as much as before. I 3-table for 2 hours and quit. I played for 2.5 hours last night and I was too tired for the last half hour and I paid for it.

Still thinking about this so I'll play 5Nl until I decide.

Having enough to handle the bigger swings that occur as a player moves up is important. Staying at 5nl a little longer (and then 10nl a little longer) will help in your next shot at 10nl (and then 25nl). Especially given the rate you are killing 5nl for right now. It won't take long to get rolled for a proper move back to 10nl.

I started off July with a heater. This is so much fun when you have a night like this.
Started off the session down a BI. KK<66 set. Then things changes drastically. My cards were either crap or the nuts. Flopped sets numerous times and stacked off two villians in one hand. Flopped nut straight 3 times with two in a row. For once, the slowplaying villians got nailed on the river when checking TP down to the river then betting big when my small pp hit river sets.

Up 8 BIs over 670 hands in one day. I think that's a record for me especially over a small number of hands.

Very sick and very cool - negative variance kicks us in the nuts enough that I really enjoy my heaters. I know I'm winning just because the deck of cards is assaulting me, but it helps take the sting out of coolers.

Just a thought, but you seem to post exclusively hands you lose, while you should probably be posting about 50% hands you win and 50% hands you lose. Try not to get fixated on not losing or just minimizing losses. Maximizing gains is equally if not can be more important.

I hit 25.5 BIs tonight for 10NL and decided to move up to 10NL. I know I'm a little early than I planned but I'm at 15bb/100 hands for July at 5NL. I started 3 tabling 10NL, got bored and added another table. Once I added another table, I quit playing crap and got into the grove again as I had been 4-tabling at 5NL. It actually felt really good to move up because I felt I was more than ready.

Second hand I could have tilted really bad as AA<22 set on river against 75/1/0.7
I shrugged it off and kept grinding.

Up 2.5 BIs at 10NLfor the night.

I'll play 10NL tomorrow then I have to go out of town on business all next week. The break will probably do me some good as it has in the past.

I will not drop back down to 5NL until the BR hits $150 again. I will play as I've been playing for the last few months. A bit nitty but comfortable.

I was at 30 BIs for 10NL until the last hand of the night when AA<J9o against 72/6/2

I'm now at 29 BIs for 10NL

In one month, I went from a BR of ~$60 to ~$300.

Dropping down after cashing out has improved my game alot.

I usually run good in my cash games while playing the FTR300. Yesterday was no exception. In the last few days I was getting cold cards and never hitting sets, oesd's, or FD's so the BR was down about 3.5 BIs.

First hand in cash game last night my AA got busted by 97o. Almost tilted and quit but remained calm. By the end of the night I was up 4BIs. Hit many sets, flushes, and str8s. BR is at about $300 again.

I've also been trying to play more hands which hasn't gone so well. If I turn off my stats on HEM (and leave others) I tend to run at about 17/13 and never really get into difficult situations.

When I try to play more hands I run about 20/16 but I get in difficult spots and tend to lose more pots such as QJ<AJ,QQ,KK on a J83 board when villian is a calling station. I want to play as a 20/17/2 but I lose alot of hands playing this way. As a 17/13/3 I am more confortable and relaxed and have more fun.

I've been stealing more which is upping my vpip and pfr but I have a tendency to get into trouble when I hit the flop with TPWK.

I have been reading about value betting more lately and I think I'm understanding it more now. Before I would bet to get villian to fold even when I should be value betting. Still working on that.

It sounds like, and looks like, things have improved a ton. Nicely done.

What you describe above is something I'm working on too right now. With position it's easier to control the pot when we've got the marginal decisions you describe above. Pot control and bet/fold are our friends in these spots. The more times we put ourselves in these situations, the better we'll get at playing them. I'm telling myself this too btw. Hopefully I'll see you at the tables.

Played in a home game Saturday night. Not a big money game.

$10 BI with 11 players and a 50/30/20 payout.

I was heads up with the host so we split as it was -EV to continue as the cash game that starts after you're put out of the tourney was moving lots of money. I heard one guy reload at least 3 times.

Cash game has a $5 BI and you can't reload until you have less than $1 in chips. It's actually a 10NL game (0.05/0.10 blinds) with a $5 BI. I've never asked why. First time I've been in 2 months. Gonna have to go more often. Fun as hell.
I left after losing one BI as it was late.

You need to find a $20, $50, or $100 home game :D Yeah, I have a weekly game that is $20 buy-in, but $0.25/$0.50 blinds. It's irritating to me. Where do you live?

Hand 1- The only note I had was that he 3bet alot. This was about his 5th hand at the table. Stats and note were from before. He pushed a short stack with AA on his first or second hand. The turn check confused me. I checked as I thought he would bet. I figured he would try to push out the flush draw if he had Kx or AA.

In hands 2 and 3 villian had only played 17 hands so no notes. I almost tilted after hand 2. My top 2 had lost twice in about 15 minutes to a set. I sat out for a couple of hands and came back and within a few hands I got Hand 3.

Those hands look pretty standard to me. I get the feeling you're posting them more for therapeutic reasons than to learn from poker, which I guess is fine if it helps you. Against very loose and aggressive villains, you're probably going to lose your stack 6 max with AK when you get an ace or a king and they have pocket aces. I doubt many players would fault you for that. These types of hands happen to everyone. I'm pretty good at controlling my emotions, but I was card dead last night for a while, got A:diamond:T:diamond: and the flop came 3:diamond:Q:diamond:8:diamond:. I planned to get my stack in and villain was more than willing to accommodate. The turn came 3:club: and the river came Q:spade: and villain had K:spade:Q:heart:. I was pretty ticked off being 97% to win on the flop and couldn't remember the last time I got a nut flush period, let alone flop one. But, that's poker. I wouldn't post that hand because there's not really much to learn from it.

I'd say try to objectively look for a mix of hands you won and lost that have some tough or interesting spots. That last hand you won doesn't really seem all that interesting either, except I'd maybe wonder if you put him on an over pair or were just hoping to get called. If the river had been a deuce instead of a Jack and villain still checked, what would you have done?

I just realized that these are the same :oops:

I had been running cold forever last night when these hands came along. They are in order within about a 15 minute timespan(not including the un-tilt time).

First one kinda tilted me.
Second one did tilt me.

I sat out after Hand 2 to untilt. I got up and wasted time for about 5 minutes then came back.

Hand 3 was against the same villian as Hand 2. By remaining calm and just playing, I was able to completely recover my lost stack from this villian.

I was reading some of my old posts and I found this from Spenda

"..point is you need to find a game that matches your personal style. If someone likes to run 16/10 they shouldn't be playing 5/6-max, they should be playing FR. If they don't like getting in marginal situations against wide ranges, that's a FR player. If someone likes to mix things up, 3bet light, and get into battles, 6max/HU might be the game for them. Find a game where your style makes you the most money."

According to this, I have more of a FR style of playing than 6 max style as I run about 17/13. I have played only played 6max in cash games for the most part. I may have 15 hands at FR. I may play FR tonight and see how it goes. I know M2M switched from 6max to FR.

I would have checked. Between the min 3bet and the called turn bet, I figured he had an overpair and there's no way he was folding to any river bet.

It's a love hate relationship. Sometimes I play nit ring, other times I play 6max. 6max is probably better for me though because I seem to like getting into pissing wars with bad regs.

About full nit, you'll do well I think. Nit it up in EP/MP, open it up HJ, CO and BTN. I think 6m teaches you TONS about how to play FR, especially postflop. I'm playing a lot more FR these days as I try to stabilize my poker income, and there are quite a few feesh at the FR tables right now, and many exploitable TAGG-regs. Stay aggressive, but remember to tighten your postflop ranges since everyone's nitty.

Opened 4 tables at FR and was bored outta my head. I started opening too many hands OOP (small pp, unsuited broadways, and Axs) when limped to and getting into difficult situations. (KQo<AQ on Q49r board against a 59/23/3) Add in a little FPS and before I knew it I was down 1.5 BIs without going AI on any hands and I didn't realize it until later. At 6max I can keep up with it better.

I think I lost track because of the hands where you get 3-4 limpers and you raise in late position to 6-7bb and then make a cbet. After several hands like this and reloading it can add up.

So I sat out and thought about it some. To keep from playing too many hands outta boredom I added another table. Still was bored so I added another for a total of 6 (This bothered me some as I had $60 in play at one time). Play was still slower than 4 tabling 6 max but it seemed to be a good balance.

My stacks started rising slowly and I should have quit as I was right at my stop loss but then AKs<Q2o and KK<AA so I had to stop for the night. Overall I was down 3 BIs which is over my stop loss for one day. Cost me 1.5 BIs to find a comfort zone and another 1.5 BIs on bad beats so I blew BRM for the day. This really bugged me.

What's a good table in-game vpip for FR for table selection? In 6max I usually leave when the table vpip is <25.

I may play 2NL FR tonight just to get more confortable with it and because I busted BRM for the day. Once I got comfortable I actually enjoyed it.

At FR you can play almost twice as many tables as 6m. I think it's important to get ENOUGH FR tables open that you're not tempted to play loose. But you still have to have enough time for every decision when there's action on half your tables at once.

I'd go for 7 if 4 6m is standard. Can't worry about the bankroll, though. If you're not rolled for it, move down a level to learn FR till your comfortable.

Variance happens - glad you're upset about BRM, though, that's good poker discipline starting to happen. I don't care so much about what the specifics are for someone's BRM, just that they rigidly follow whatever guidelines they thoughtfully set up for themselves.

LoL. For full nit, anything north of 20 is awesome. I'll play 18's some times when there's only a few games running. Major nit fest at 50nl, dunno about 10nl since I haven't played 10nl FR in ages. I was almost exclusively 6m at 10nl a year ago.

Good luck, it takes a few hands to learn the game. Sorry you started with a downswing, but stick with it and you'll get better.

Dropped down to 5NL and opened 6 tables. Much more comfortable than the first day. I was even up a couple of 5NL BI's after I finished. Seems to be much less swongy than 6 max. I guess because you're nut camping.

Everyone is different, but I play 4 tables NL full ring and rarely feel bored, although I think I may be ready to step up to 5 tables once I get my new monitor because I've gotten rather proficient with 4 I think. I also don't feel like I nut peddle. I try to get reads and play premium hands and trash if the situation calls for it. If I was just clicking buttons nut peddling, then yes, 4 tables would get boring quickly and I could probably play 10 to 12 tables, but as I've advocated many times in many threads, paying attention, taking notes, getting reads, and playing real poker is ESSENTIAL. I think my stats are 24/18, which I would classify as semi-tight although some may consider it semi-laggy or laggy.

About VPIP for the table, I try to join FR tables w/ VPIP > 30. After you join and play for a while, it WILL go down b/c you raise your good hands properly, and the passives don't like to call so less people will join you postflop.
Its best to try and get to a table where there is a maniac of course, as sometimes even a VPIP<30 can be fun if there's a guy who wont fold his 2nd pair.

The table I was at with you last night was perfect...there was a guy to your left a seat or two who was donating to all w/ a 45 VPIP...
I believe I doubled through him.....
Just keep being patient, and play enough tables to keep you occupied....

Lost a biggun 20 minutes into the tournament. Caught a few but only one was a keeper. Limit on largemouth is 12" and limit on smallmouth is 14". Caught all smallmouth but only one was a keeper at 15". We got spanked in the tourney but I had a helluva time.

Poker
Finnaly got comfy at FR and 6 tables. I've recovered the 3 BIs I lost after starting and I'm up a little. FR is not near as swongy as 6max. I guess because you play nittier. So far a good day is up 1.7 BIs and a bad day is up 0.4 BIs (not counting the - 3BI day)

I may switch between 6m and FR just for a change.

After recovering my 3BIs at FR I proceeded to lose 1.5 BIs again. Swongy as hell this month. I decided to play 6max again for a few days.

Since there aren't as many games at FR I joined waiting list for games with good stats and waited patiently. I never did this at 6max as there are always games available with decent stats.

So for the last couple of days I played 6m and actually joined the waiting list for the really good tables. The first day I was up 3 BIs and the second I was up 2 BIs, temporarily. But on the second day I got coolered a couple of times towards the end of the session (one was AA<23s by a 68/23/2) and was down 0.5 BIs. I started off playing 3 tables at 6 m and as usual, I was playing with crap hands so I added another

I think played FR has helped my 6m game. I noticed alot more players pushing at FR. It's also strange at FR when you open UTG with AA and get 7 callers. WTF? Villians at FR are nittier but not by much. Maybe it's the tables I'm selecting. I also need to stop playing marginal hands in EP. I'm getting in trouble in the HJ with 66-99 when limped to.

I can't decide which I like best so I'll just mix it up some. It's like having to chose between Loni Anderson and Lynda Carter (ok so I'm old). Kinda depends on your mood at the time.

Went through a pretty bad downswing at 10NL, both at FR and 6m. Down almost 9 BIs for the month at 10NL. Got coolered and rivered several times.

BR was at $200.

After that I decided to drop down to 5NL-6m today to get my confidence back up. Up a little over 7 BIs at 5NL today so BR now is at $237.

I think I'll stay at 5NL for a little while. BRM at 10NL was forcing me to quit for the day after I lost one BI. Still deciding when I'll move back up to 10NL.

Stay strong. Play 5nl until you feel like you're playing really well and have the confidence, then get back in there and kick ass at 10nl. Sometimes, the move up is more in your head and about confidence than it is about skill.

Going ok at 5NL. Up 3 BIs a few days ago, then lost some the next day.

Yesterday I started off ok depending on how you look at. Got in some good pots with good hands and ended up splitting. I had 6 hands last night that I split. I was up about 3 BIs when I got coolered and was back down to even. No biggie. I took a break and came back ready. I recoved it all back except $0.01. Couldn't do that if I tried. I'm trying to concentrate more on ranges lately and it seems to be helping. I'm actually saying out loud what I think villian has and I'm actually right now and then, unlike before.

Taking a break from poker starting Saturday. I was fortunate enough to get invited to KSC for the shuttle launch on Tuesday. Never seen a launch before so I'm looking forward to it. :dance:

This month I've been on FTR for one year. I know, I should be at least at 50NL by now but you have to consider how much of a newb I was a year ago. I also withdrew most of my roll at one time after about a 20BI downswing a few months ago. I never re-deposited as it would only help me to build it back up.

I was going to post everything I have learned in the last year but I don't have the time to do that so I'll just say this:
About a year ago, here's everything I knew about poker.

I know a little more now and I consider myself a winning player only because I haven't completely blown my BR to hell due to mostly good BRM.

For the next year, I'm going to do some things I haven't done thus far:

1. Read a poker book (I didn't see the use as there's so much on FTR that I didn't know)

2. Sweat session(s) if I can get some sweaters. My brother in law was in town this past weekend and he wanted to watch me 4 table 6max. While I was playing, I was telling him why I was doing everything I was doing and what range I put villians on. It's usually distracting to have someone watch but by the end of the session (about 1.5 hours) I was up a couple of BIs.

3. Participate in the IRC. I'm usually on IRC when I play but all I do is read what othere write. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't understand alot of what is said in IRC. Most of the poker stuff I understand but everything else may as well be Latin.

4. Post more hands on IRC

5. Study at least half as much as I play. This has been hard to do as I only have a couple of hours a day to play/study but I do play almost every day. What I may do is study one day and then play the next.

6. Move up to at least 25NL in the next few months. If I don't? meh

7. Try to play more hands. #5 may make this more difficult.

8. Make it a point to put villians on a range. I've been doing this more and more lately.

9. Make another video of my play with audio this time.

10. Get better at golf. I haven't played for 20 years and I dug my clubs out of the garage yesterday and went to the driving range and hit about 200 balls (I can prove it as I have several blisters). All the guys I play home games with play so I thought why not. I'm not as bad as I thought but still not pretty. And what's up with woods the size of grapefruit now? You need a tee the size of a pencil now? I'll spend some more time figuring out ranges (pun intended) before I actualy playing but by then it won't be as embarrassing when I hit that worm burner or two.

I'm back at 10NL and the BR is at about $330. August wasnt so good but Sept is looking up. I also decided that I don't like FR. If it's more swongy at 6m then so be it.

BTW, the shuttle launch I went to was amazing.

AA<QQ>TT in 3-way AI preflop all with full stacks. That would have been a helluva way to start the night if I could have taken that one down.

I need to find the fold button again. I caught myself about to go AI with TP again. Don't know why I started doing that shit all of a sudden.

You just suck really bad at hand reading/thinking about ranges. Thus failing to accurately take into account the relative strength of your holding vs your opponents possible holdnigs.

In other words, it's just 'easier' to be tight.

Yesterday I watched a few grinderschool vids. One was spenda's where he plays with a vpip of almost 100%. I saw how many pots he took down just by being aggressive in correct spots. I also watched the first lecture where he talks about ranges and hero calls. I NEVER make hero calls because I think I'm always beat.

Last night I decided to be more agressive and make a few hero calls.

I usually play 16/14/2 in 6max. 3% 3bet and 20% steal

Last night I played as a 19/16/3 5.7% 3bet and 30% steal.

Had a couple of coolers and made 2 dumbass calls but ended up over 2 BIs.

I think this is related to m2m's comment...or not

I agree completely. The range I usually put villian on is the range that beats me so I fold when villian bets.

One reason I believe I do this is because I never bet for information. I know spenda hates this term. I also did this alot last night and it helped me narrow the ranges and I also took down a few pots doing this. This also helped in the hero calls.

I also went through HEM showing known hole cards just to see what kind of crap that villians play with. I was very surprised.


I'll be playing in a home game tonight so I'm really looking forward to that. Haven't played in a month or so.

Golf Update:
I refused to play until I had spent some time at the range/putting green/chipping green.
I hit over 600 range balls and probably the same chipping and putting. I played 9 holes yesterday afternoon. I intended to play alone but some guy at the course asked me to play with him so I did. He told me he plays 3 or four times a week so I thought I would get my ass spanked. He sucked as much as I did.

My best was putting. Worst was driving. I try to hit it too hard. I think I hit it too hard because I expect myself to be able to easily hit 250+ yard drives because of my size. I also decided to walk instead of ride and it was humid as hell (Alabama). I played about as bad as I expected but still had fun. Only tilted a couple of times.

Overall my first two shot sucked and everything after that was ok. Now I know what to practice more at the range.

The other day I watched a grinderschool video where spenda plays at 100 vpip. I thought this may help me with my game to try it.

So I dropped down to 5NL, opened one table, and played as a 94/65/6 for about 45 minutes. My cbet % was at 88. My steal % was 75. I wanted to make it 100 vpip but a didn't raise in the bb a few times so it dropped a bit.

There were about 3 players with vpip > 40 and the rest were <25. During the entire session only one player adjusted to my play. I don't think the other players even realized I was doing this. This was an eye opening experience and I was very surprised at some of the trash people play with. This also forced me to think about ranges.

I reloaded once when my stack dropped to $4.50 but other than that I was ok. Once I got up to about $15 I lost a hand to the player who adjusted and dropped down to $10. By the end of the session I was at about $17.

I played in a home game and was first out of the tourney. Broke even in the cash game but I played much looser than I normally do at these games.

Got home and opened up 4 tables of 10NL. I decided I was going to play a bit looser and much more aggressive. Over about 600 hands I was a 25/21/4 with a 3bet % of 7. I usually play a nitty 16/13/2 at 6 max. At the end of the session I was up a little over 3 BIs.

• In hand 1, villain is 1/2 stacked and very loose and aggressive. Once you get an ace or a king, you are stacking off unless it's a super scary board like 1 liners to a flush or straight.
  
• This is an auto-call. You've basically got the nuts. Only 97, 96, and 95 beat you and those are pretty unlikely hands for anyone to have.
  
• I might have folded the turn, but definitely fold the river. Any 6 or 2 clubs has you beat and you have to ask yourself, what is he sticking around with? Don't get me wrong, with reads, you can make calls in these situations, but if you thought this was a call, I'd want to know what hands do you expect him to turn over that you can beat?
  
• I probably stack off here because I put him on an ace and not pocket aces. The only hand that could reasonably show up that beats us I think is AT (6 combos) or possibly TT (3 combos) , and 88 (3 combos) - 12 total combos. There are more hands that show up that we can beat like AK (8 combos), AQ (8 combos), and AJ (8 combos) - 24 total combos.

your bet sizing on early streets is causing you problems

hand 1 - bet turn a little harder. Fold to the turn raise or jam over. With state reads, I prefer jamming.

hand 2 - that many players you can bet the flop> turn is fine, river bet bigger. You gotta call here cos he has a random 8 or trips more often than a better boat

hand 3 - raise flop bigger, like 5x or even 6x, too many players, board is too drawy, someone is coming along for the ride. You should be happy to get it in on the flop if at all possible. Turn is fine as played. River is gross.

hand 4 - river is a call. There could be an argument for jamming, but i don't buy into it.
