Thanks guys

Not fun. I got back to around -$400 in 20k hands but then I had to move out of halls and party lots as it was the end of my year at college so i thought screw poker. I've now played 38k hands this month and I'm back in the black at ~+$600. Not spectacular but I'm pretty relieved after that downswing.
Sooo, what are my future plans? I don't really know what I should be expecting for the rest of the year... I want to be a midstakes reg sometime soon like at the end of the year, but I've heard that everyone tends to plateau at 200nl and then the games dry up a bit. You need to be able to exploit regs once you get higher up, from what I have heard, so that's what I've been attempting to do at 100nl recently with mixed success. I think it's all a question of experience and knowing when a player is going to snap and do something silly, but I managed to tilt a v nitty reg into stacking off w/ 88 on a 234 rainbow board and then overbet shove ~2x pot with AK on a Jxx board yesterday so that's a start!
As for right now, I'm really unsure about whether to cash in a bonus now. Stars have just released a 4k bonus for 250k FPPs, which us better value than the $1500 bonuses for 100k FPPs. However, I still plan on withdrawing 2k more to pay for rent next year (I'm a life nit, each time I've reached a 6k BR I've withdrawn 1k so far) and I want to move up to 200nl asap. Maybe the best plan is not to withdraw again and just take out 2k when I get the 4k bonus, which could take about another 2 months as I need 120k FPPs until I can afford it and then it takes 28k VPPs to clear......
Anyway, I think I'm going to move up to 200nl when I reach 7k and take shots, moving down again when I hit 6k.
Other developments
I'M MOVING DOWN TO 16 TABLES AND THIS TIME I ACTUALLY MEAN IT GODDAMMIT.
24 tabling is hard, I can't take notes while playing which makes it pointless as then I have to do note-taking sessions in PT which is time I could otherwise spend playing so 16 tables is better. Also I'm pretty sure I can spend more of my time trying to piss off the regs if I'm playing less tables rather than automatically making robotic decisions.
I'm aiming (tentatively) for the 3k milestone bonus for reaching 300k VPPs.
I'm not setting a profit target... Let's just see.
100k hands this month?
Operation Grind to Midstakes - BEGIN!
operation grind to midstakes starts pretty fucking well with $970 in 3.4k hands, roll is now at 6.7k.

Word!
Get another reg out of the 100NL player pool, works for me.
Gl @ 200NL badgers.
I played my first session of 200nl as promised for a MIGHTY profit of $3.
I was up $550 at one point partially thanks to turning a set over set (hand is posted in FR forum) but then I got 2-outered on the river for $170 and 99>my KK>A6 all in preflop which again was a rivered 9 but meh. I don't really feel tilted or anything overall I'm pretty happy with how I played and I felt pretty comfortable which is a good result for the day.
My thought process - he's calling most raises and I'm going to be OOP for the hand. He's probably noticed me 3-betting Ak.Quote:

bahhhh I'm going round in circles. I need to get my head screwed on right so I've gone down to 100nl. My biggest leak at the moment by a huge distance is playing out of the blinds I am absolutely spewing all over the place at the moment. From my 4k hands at 200nl my fold BB to steal was at ~70% which is ridic low and symptomatic of my FPS.
Roll is now back to 6.8k which is ok i guess but 1.5k after 57k hands is meh for this month. think of the fpps though...
Oh and I digressed and went back to 24 tabling lol. I felt I needed to grind monotonously to stop me from tilting, it kinda worked i guess but I shouldn't need to do that.
Fun hand as always. Prolly should have donked flop instead of going for a c/r but all's well that ends well.

badgers, how many tables do you open when you try 200NL?
I tried 12 tabling which should have been fine because it's like half of what I'm used to. Basically there was too much there that was new to me and I was getting confused and fps was a huge factor. There were new regs, at 100nl I feel like I know a lot of the regs really well, I know who's spewy who's capable of making big folds and who is 3betting a lot etc. There were just so many players that I had never seen before and that were decent and that's not something I'm used to. Also, I tried raising to 3x in late position as that was what everyone else was doing which in hindsight was a stupid thing to start doing as the last thing I ought to be doing is making changes to my game as I move up. Next time I move up I think I'm just going to play 16 tables and keep eerything the same as my 100nl game until I feel comfortable and then I can think about varying raise sizes and stuff.Quote:

Random thought - were it not for my breakthrough in pokering that happened about 3 months ago I would be working nights shelf-stacking right now. For the two months and a half doing that I would make ~£2k which is $4k. If I going as I am over the summer I'll make like $7-8k at poker before I go back to college AND a $4k bonus in the same time for a fraction of the hours doing something I (mostly...) enjoy and maintaining a social life. I feel better about my mediocre winrate already.
Nice. I read similar advice a while back and think its really good. A lot of people think they suddenly need to start making changes to whats been a winning game style just because they've moved up, but it makes it really hard to figure out how you're going.Quote:

wat is it they say? hyachachachacha i think
having a really rough time of it again. I just had a look at PokerEV and I'm down like 1.3k in sklansky bucks for the month, also running shit at set<set and KK<AA and the like.
Also, I have only won one pot for a net win of >60BBs in the last 4k hands and that was only for net 80BBs
/end typical bad beat rant that bored everyone. I'm still up for the month and I have earned shit-tons of FPPs so it's all good. Only 80k FPPs until I get to the 4k bonus, although it's like another 28k VPPs to clear after that.....
ANYWAY, an annoying but amusing hand. Villain is a nitty reg but had just started playing back.

Stick with it man. I used to bitch to myself about how my ai EV was way ahead of my actual winnings, but in the last 7k hands or so they've switched totally until I'm now running way ahead of my ai EV. Its called variance because it varies, keep with it and it'll start falling your way at some point!

Anyway he had 99 obv. Awesome.
I managed to scrape back to +$60 in the 2k hands. Quick check of the pokerEV has me down another $200 in sklanskys today... standard so it seems.
It's reeeaaaallly annoying cos I'm trying to open up my game at the moment. I'm running ~16/13 and doing quite a bit of 3betting while trying not to spew by cbetting too much in 3bet pots when I feel like they have a really strong 3bet calling range etc. etc. I feel like when I come out of this I'll be a much better player but this month has just been one long beat.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
These seem to be the adjustments that will help you loads when you move up, but I'm not sure that they're ++EV at 100nl.Quote:

I'm also trying to 3-bet more, but it seems to be about targeting, position and/or blind defence... it's still something I don't do much of though. I think it's lucky for me that I'm not playing on stars - the FT regs are mostly pretty safe to play against!
finally a good day.
I was considering not playing until next month. Today I watched 2 DC videos, messed about w/ PT and pokerstove for a lot, read some really good articles and read a bit of ToP. Basically there was some serious study. At the end of it I felt completely psyched up and ready for pokah and a good session it was too, 2.5k hands +$321 and I cleared the $240 bonus. Roll >7k again woo
i'm basically playing like 16/13 now which i think is much closer to optimal and playing only 16 tables I'm using all that extra time to do things like table select and make notes and actually think... you know, important stuff. Today was the first time I've felt confident w/ my new style. I'm 3betting more, stealing more etc.etc, and hopefully I'm getting better postflop as well. I caught myself thinking things through a bit deeper so hopefully the drop in the number of tables is going to do me good.
However, I still can't sort out my flipping blind numbers. Today for instance in 2.5k hands I had fold SB to steal at 94% and foldBB to st at 69%. WTF??? Whyyyyy? I just think I'm calling too much out of the big blind without any knowledge of the opponent and without any plan. Also I'm 3betting too much from the BB when I should be 3betting from the BU with position. I think atm I'm undervaluing position and overvaluing the importance of having no-one left to act and "protecting my blind" when really 3betting is just a spew.
wheeeeee long post.
OK hand reading time. Villain is 18/11 or something and like to 3bet a lot. I haven't really played back at him today and can't remember/haven't noted previous history cos i was 24 tabling when i played him before. anyway, WTFISTHISSHIT?
What does villain have and why did he stop and go a 4bet?

Decent start to the month, I've played 9k hands and I'm up $730 so it's going along nicely. I can't say this is all on merit, I've been running pretty nicely which makes a change from last month :)
2k of those 9k hands are 200nl and I'm trying again... I had my first proper session of 16 tabling today, it went ok and I was up around a buy-in but I was -$250 at 100nl anyway so meh. I think I'm going to mix 200nl and 100nl tables for a while enabling me to table select really well cos even today on a sunday night it was tough getting onto tables at 200nl.
Oh I was expecting to have pretty standard stats for my 200nl stint, but in 2k hands I'm running at 19/17/6 w/ 43% attempt to steal and 70% fold BB to steal. WHAT? I hope it's just an odd sample but I'm going to have to focus on nitting it up in the future i think, at least until I get to know a lot of the regs etc.

I'm probably about to jinx myself, but everything seems to be going rather well at the moment. My move up to 200nl has been most successful, I'm running at ~4ptBB/100 over my first 40k hands, which is much better than my lifetime 100nl winrate! Obviously I'm running hot, but I'm going to enjoy it :D Table selecting has been a HUGE part of my improved winrate, my attitude to table selection used to be pick the first 24 and only get a new table if one I'm on breaks. Now I join waiting lists, leave tables I don't like, ignore bad tables with empty seats for long periods of time etc. etc.
Everyone seems to want to spew at me at the moment. I have got quite a bad image a lot of the time but by using notes I know which players hate me and which players I haven't got out of line vs. so I avoid spewing unnecesarily when I have a clean image. For instance, today I flatted a nits MP open with QQ on the SB. He wasn't playing many tables so I thought it was likely he'd noticed (it went to showdown and I won as well so he would have seen my cards.) This then gave me the freedom to 3bet even against this nit quite liberally because he has no reason to believe I'm 3betting wide. I'm trying to constantly adjust and keep track of my image and history vs. every player, I think this is an intergral part of my development.
With that in mind, here's a hand from yesterday. I had a note "probably thinks I 3bet far too much". He runs a nitty 12/8 or something.

When I 3bet the flop, basically I wanted to look FOS. I knew I had a bad image and he might get frisky w/ AK or something. I really wasn't expecting KK though. Looking at it again, I can kind of understand his point of view. "This guy is too aggro, I'll call and trap with the kings. I'm a fucking retard so I c/minraise flop and over-rep my hand (more likely "I HAVE THE NUTS KINGS WHOOO"), what, he three-bets, he's so FOS. c/r turn woop."
It's pretty fun when everyone decides to throw money at you. So far for the month I am up ~7.5k including -$120 donkamenting which I haven't done for ages and probs suck at. CMON 10k month pleeeeaaaaaaaseee :D:D:D
Afterthough - I forgot to mention that I've started using HEM and it's amazing so far. New HUD tilt only lasted for ~30mins  It's a great piece of kit and I wholeheartedly recommend it over PT3 (which I also bought a while back ) Also, I've started using a few AHK scripts, including stars assistant which has an auto timebank clicker - crucial for mixing fast and normal speed tables.
Wait, you play fast tables as well?
Man, you must be some kind of machine...
nice work on the move up!!!Quote:

I had a bit of a break over the past couple of weeks. I feel like the sheer brutality of this game has sunk in recently. How I am qualified to come to this conclusion is largely a mystery as I ran really well last month. But as I keep improving and poker looks like it's going to become a more and more important part of my life in the future I've been thinking a lot about it.
Obviously gambling is very different to most jobs; you never know what you're going to earn to an extent that is incomparible with performance related pay. You can do brilliantly for a long period of time and lose money. Gambling, as a career, is one thing. If you found a way to beat a casino game such as card counting in blackjack all you need to do is go to the casino and apply your system. When times are rough, you can just put in more hours and things WILL turn around if you have an edge.
In poker, it is different. Your mental state is such a crucial part of the game. Here's what I've realized - if you take a loss particularly badly in poker, you may lose your edge. If you run like shit for a long period of time, your play may deteriorate and then frankly you're fucked. Playing for a living is tough, particularly if you're a on a low budget.
What I've learnt from this is the importance of financial stability away from the tables. I hope never to be in a position when I cannot afford to put in a losing month. The pressure of that would be intolerable. Thinking about the future I have serious ambitions if I can keep my head sorted. But I mustn't force myself to play when I'm not feeling prepared or in the right mental state, and I must NEVER feel that I have to play above a certain limit. If the 200nl games suck or I'm just not feeling it, I should without hesitation drop down. Lose the ego, think about money :D
So what brought on this random waffling? Well, just look at the end of my August graph... edit: lol I've just realized how inconspicuous the downswing looks - the thick green line actually ends up below 8083 for a -1.8k tilty session.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...gust-08HEM.jpg
Ok so it was my best month ever and I can't complain ldo (thick line is actual winnings, thin is equity adjusted so I ran hawt.) However, during the last 5k-ish hands I really forced myself to play. I felt that I had to continue, even though I was feeling tense and weary. Lesson learnt I hope.
So august -
8k profit
+$100 lol donkaments
+ $700 Bonus
+ Moved up to 200nl
= Great success
September goals
40k VPPs (aiming for 300k milestone bonus) BUT may be more or less depending on how I feel
10k profit, but that will include a 4k bonus and I'm already up $700 so HOPEFULLY that is reasonable.
No more than 16 tables - I have sorted out a new double cascade type layout and I'm really happy with it :) I'll take a screenshot sometime
Table select like the nit I truly am
Also if the pound could keep falling against the dollar I will be delighted :D
I hope this doesn't come across as too negative btw. Obv I'm really pleased with my August results but the tilty last day has really got to me. I feel really mentally refreshed now though, hopefully september can be even better!
we both took a long break!
Nice August
Now go and get $10k in September...
Sick graph. Inspires me to get better @ FR. Keep crushing.

EZ GAME imo. All of that is profit I bought in with exactly $200. All from the same opp as well. I ran SO good. :D It's been an ambition of mine for a while to reach 1k on one table! Give comments plz if these are bad I dunno how to play HU really... :s
Note: converter is being weird. When it says raises $5 it means raises $5 to $6, and when 3betting from the big blind I was raising to $22 and it says raises $20.
This is the second hand. I dunno about flatting preflop, it's somthing I considered but so many people are maniacs in heads up and I'm going to be a complete unknown to him (I don't know if he's a reg or what at this stage). Having raised the previous hand I felt it was better to raise and hope to get the monies in. His holding really suprised me though, thoughts on his play?

This one is probs more intersting. I felt it was really really likely on the river after his bet sizing that he had a monster (he'd played really straightforward and pretty tight.) Would overbet shoving be overkill here? Thoughts on river c/r plan anyway? Also, on the flop a call seems kinda bad but at the time I think I had just c/r the last flop and thought it was likely he'd be a pain, without any really solid reads on how he plays I felt I would get into a lot of shitty spots.

I also ran well yesterday, so I'm up 2.6k for the month now and I've only played for 7 hours :D
you ran so good!
Bet the river in hand 2
only 2.6k in 7hrs - never mind, you'll get there sometime...
ps. nice work.
oh i forgot to mention the crucial read for hand 2 - he took the b/c/b pot control line a few hands before with TPWK so I thought he's betting the majority of his calling range there and I thought he would have trouble folding a lot cos my line looks FOS.
Seriously what the hell is going on? I'm not even playing that well (as bankitdrew will testify) and the upswing just keeps on going.
I promised a while ago that I'd take a screeny of my setup. I've been playing only on my laptop screen over the summer, so things have been a little cramped and I haven't been in IRC for aaggesss as a result. Here's my new double-cascade setup, the thing I'm most happy about is the taskbar menu on the side which I read about in a thread on 2p2. It stops the PS windows collapsing so you can always click on them if they start flashing orange (meaning att urgently required).
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...cadelayout.jpg
Hands from today, our very own bot has broken his fold button. I don't think this is a particularly good three-barrel but whatever, I don't think it can be all that bad to show up with a bluff here with some frequency but against drew I doubt he's folding much on that river after calling the turn so I'm largely just burning money. I think I'm basically trying to rep too narrow a range (TT+,AJ) when there's a shitload of draws I can have so it's pretty spewy. Lots of rivers a bet would be fine though so I like the turn double barrel. Nice hand drew...

Now for my favourite hand of the session. I'd had a lot of fun with this reg, he had twice 4bet/folded before this hand. Both time he had raised to $48 and I thought was very important to 3bet small to allow him to 4bet to the same size and hopefully he'd stack off with a wide range thinking I'm a lunatic and I'm 5bet bluff shoving. I am in no position to complain for a looonnng time. 10ptBB/100 over 13k hands up 5.2k for the month and I've cracked the 20k bankroll mark :D
ridiculous.
Hopefully I'll clear the 4k bonus by the end of the month, it only needs I think about 16k hands so it shouldn't be a problem, when I run bad I will probably have more motivation to play, I'm not sure what I think of that mentality though...
Also I need to practice percussion more frequently or I will fail college this year, which wouldn't really be good. I might actually have to organize my time well this year which is a quite worrying thought because at the moment every day is another hangover. I'm sure it'll change soon as college settles down and hopefully I'll get into a nice routine which accomodates my college work, personal perc practice, active social life and of course poker. We shall see, I'll start by going for a 5k run tomorrow morning :)
Craaaazy day yesterday. At one point the day was a complete disaster, in the end it was acceptable I guess. I was playing really really lag compared to my normal stats, here are my stats from yesterday
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...ulz/LAGday.jpg
Pretty mental.
Anyway I was pretty cross with myself after overbet shove-bluffing 2x pot on a T849J board because I thought opp would have 3bet QQ and then on review I realised that I was a retard and QQ was by far his most likely hand. I nearly quit at that point, but instead I decided to set a stop-loss. Unfortunatley, as you will se in the graph, I plummetted through the stop loss of 1k without a second thought...
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...agdaygraph.jpg
Anyway, there was this absolute mega-fish and he ran sooo good against me it was totally sick. I managed to drop over 1k to him, a couple of hands were pretty marginal - I got J6s all in on a JT9 flop thinking he's satcking off with a T, J, Q or an 8 and maybe even more shit but he ended up having a set of tens which was a suprise. I later got the read that he was actually a lot more sensible post-flop than his 95/37 stats would suggest but at the time without that read I think it is a bad but not horrendous stack off.
Also, AQ>99, JTs overflushed by Axs, JJ<TT in a 4bet pot etc. etc. etc. all against the same villain it was insane. The two times I had AA on that table he folded, which also displeased me.
So, I got into a couple of huge pots including my biggest ever and almost got back to even on the table, if not for the night...
Preflop is meh, I was playing too many hands last night as you can see. Trying to adjust to the maniac to your left by opening more pots isn't really the brightest idea...

That's still ~$10 down on that table that's how crazy it was. Look at how deep everyone is, I was not the only player to suffer against this luckbox.
So after all that madness, if I had run at EV I would be nearly breakeven. However, what I have learnt about playing loose is that it is really hard to keep track of wtf is going on because you are just playing so many hands. I think I liked it better around the 16/13 mark, with maybe just a tad less 3betting!
I may have to change my goals for the year now, I was hoping to get the 300k bonus, but I've only earnt 9k VPPs this month and I think just going for the 200k VPP mark is probs for the best. I am lazy :(

+4k bonus :)
Verrry happy with my month, I played less than half the hands I was aiming to play and yet I made more money! :D
October has also started well, up $900 in 2k hands today. IDK how much is luck or how well I'm playing but I'm running at 4ptBB/100 over my first 90k hands at 200nl. Seeing as that's around twice my 100nl winrate I'm pretty happy!
I don't know when I'm going to move up to 2/4. Although I made money in my first 400nl session, I was playing at around 20/16 and I was being pretty spewy and I think I was lucky to come away ahead. I think I should maybe keep 1/2 as my main game and only play 2/4 when the games look good or at weekends. I may also try mixing limits, but so far everytime I've ever tried to mix limits the higher stakes tables have taken all of my focus. Maybe it just needs practice, who knows...

WOW. I need to read FTR a bit more often. I had not realised you had moved up Badgers although its not a surprise. Good job and sick month. How long before your crushing 5/10?
nice job dude! very sick indeed.
What can I add?
Awesome dude! Keep it up!!
Well done sir.....
I am jealous....:)
Thanks very much everyone!
shif I think it will be a loooonngg time if ever. I'm a bankroll nit for a start... We need to go to dtd again at some point I think!
Good to see you moving back up to 100nl daven. I'm sure you'll crush it :)
I haven't played in the last couple of days, I went out and treated myself to an iMac basically because I've always wanted one and I'm in a position now that I can kinda afford it. I'm hoping to get everything all my poker applications working in parallels (a piece of software to use windows and osx simultaneously) so that I can play lots of tables and be on irc and have music playing. It will also be good for college so I can just about justify buying it, at a push....
When I did play on the 2nd though I managed to drop $600 in ~500 hands, most notably by 4bet/calling KJs BVB 90BBs deep against a decent 21/17 player when history should definitely have said omg snap fold. Oh well...
Seriously though, poker on a mac could potentially be the most awesome thing ever if I get it going. There's a piece of software called expose which spreads out all of the open windows and also works with parallels, basically if it works I could go from my cascade setup to tiled in no time at all, hover over a table that needs attention then flick back, all in less than a second. Dunno how HEM hud will react to this though, this is very much an experiment if it goes wrong I can just boot the entire mac in windows and just play normally but I think it's a worthwhile purchase.
I hope it works :S
I am cross.
6k downswongs suck imo, hyachachachachacha.
I did win my biggest pot ever though, by quite some distance... (unfortunately dropped a similar pot with a fairly retarded bluff deep at 2/4 some time just before this...)

pisco had KK here. woop woop.
However, I am still down 3.5k so far this month, making me VERY cross indeed. Most is at 400nl where I spewed a little and also failed to hit much other than the hand above obv. At 200nl I am down 7 buyins over 23k hands having been completely unable to hit a flop so far this month. More spewing and retarded bluffs follow, due me being annoyed because I'm not running like god.
I preferred it when I ran like god.... This game is actually tough, I need to be better at maintaining my A-game when I'm running less well.....
Lol yeah, its amazing how good we think we are when we run hot eh? Things turn tougher when the cards dont coorperate well. I see break even, or even a small loss as a successful session when I've just run cold. The ability to get through those stages without spewing off is grossly underated.
start running like god againQuote:

Best day ever today, up 1.9k (7k hands). Funny thing is, if I'd run at EV I'd be up nearly 3k! Playing sooooo many hands atm, not good for college... I need to do some practice soon, oh well.
I've been doing some thinking.... SNE is like 30 hours a week if I 24 table 1/2. Unfortunately, I can't really 24 table 1/2 particularly well yet (see long b/e spell after downswong), and the more I think about it, the more I realize I can't make SNE next year. But we will see, if I am 16 tabling 2/4 by Jan then the situation may change and it might become a realistic ambition.
Another thing I noticed, from top to bottom that swong was nearly 7k!!!1 WTF???? that's a lot of money....... God this month has been exhausting. Not over yet though, I'm thinking 100k hands by the end?? :D
6k VPPs away from 2k milestone, which will take 10k VPPs to clear. Add that to the 2k I'm getting from concierge and I may well hit the 6k target for the month, albeit as a FPP pro instead of with good poker. Nevermind...

misplayed a couple of hands and ran $400 below EV so there is definitely some promise there. It's soooo much fun as well, I really enjoyed this session, despite the swongs. I think it's all about using the threat of position and the deep stacks, so I was experimenting with smaller cbets in position.
Also, I had a sort of breakthrough in my thinking recently (nothing major, just something I worked out.) In 3bet pots, you don't need to cbet so large because the stacks are shallow and implied odsd on draws etc. are less of a threat. cbettign 1/2 pot (or sometimes even less) in a 3bet pot with your entire range is at times completely correct, However, what I realized recently which is fairly neat is that a lot of the time, you are burning money by cbetting too large, in the same way that raising a river when only better calls and worse folds is burning money.
Assuming the stacks are shallow (100BBs 3bet pot will have maybe maybe 3.5x pot behind), you are going to have no problem getting villain all-in in three streets. By betting larger with your entire range, you are not getting any extra value, however you are making your bluffs more expensive.
Makes sense?
Oh and Atothec, my motivation comes from a mixture of being annoyed at college and me not wanting a losing month. I am stubborn. :)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...z/Picture6.png
Released the 2k milestone bonus which will take 10k VPPs to clear, should be a piece of cake to get before the end of the month at ~3k hands a day.
Today was a good day. I started out by minraising and getting totally owned/coolered by fatb in a hilarious hand. Guy is a luckbox fish nit and I hate him. idk if I should have minraised when he said minraise, or even if I should have raised the flop. Getting a FH in though is fine, would have been cool to soulread one way or another but whatever, hand is done now.
http://weaktight.com/473401
So I stopped minraising because I w as spewing too much and played my normal 17/14 ish game instead with man-sized raises. Then I played a bit of 2/4 because it's friday night and I'm feeling ok about my game... Ended up +1.5k on the night largely thanks to this hand...

Edit: crap, forgot to post results. He had T4o for the gutshot, nice hand sir.
However, I did get totally owned by kelisitaan repeatedly as I was playing three-handed with him on two tables - there were really bad fullstacked players on both tables keeping me there, but with keli's presence i don't even know if I was +EV, he was really owning me quite a lot.....
2.1k of concierge cleared today, +$1.5k at the tables means I'm up $5.6k before I've even cleared the 2k bonus. It would be totally sick if I could turn this into a 5 figure month after that $7k swong, but I guess I'm just dreaming now.....

I have decided that november is the month for me to test SNE feasibility 24 tabling 1/2 for next year. Started badly, -1.5k in the first 17k hands, some bad play some all-in luck some coolers, whatever.... I don't care, this month is about VOLUME (and lots of profit ldo...)
TARGET - 82k VPPs for month ~180-190k hands :?
Progress - 7k/82k VPPs, -$1500
GOGOGO NOVEMBER ONE TIME

ONE TIIMMMEEEE NOVEMBER!!!!
I feel like I played really well today, I played 8k hands, some 2/4 (24 tabling - hard work) some 1/2. Blergh I can't complain, I won $1.5k today but 1k behind ev as welllll (all at 1/2, at least I don't run bad at 2/4!).
Sooooooooooooooo much grindage causes brain-freeze after just 9 days AND I'm behind the pace.... Bah, SNE is going to be hard but I'm pretty sure I'm going for it next year... Jimmy, it's only around 4.5 hours a day even if I only play 1/2 because I can get in around 1500 hands/hr 24 tabling.
Progress 20k/82k VPPs, -1k :(
I am the FPP pro master.
EDIT
lol I can't believe what a whiny little bitch I am.
POSITIVES
This weekend I've 24 tabled 2/4 a lot and didn't feel outclassed/out of place.
I played good today.
I'm up quite a bit this month considering 2k bonus and all the FPPsssss
INTERNET POKERS
Yeah, if you play every single day of the year. That's a lot!Quote:

I hate pokers.
Just passed the 100k mark for the month, total profit is -$800. 4k behind all-in EV etc. etc. boo hoo sad face no one cares yipeeeee.
Either way I'm playing crap. Volume even though it's not on the pace for sne is definitely getting to me and it's frankly tilting me. This is easily my worst run ever, looking at it on my graph since march is quite funny, I've been fortunate that my "all-in luck" has been quite stable in the past but for the last 100k hands the two lines have diverged significantly :(
So I come to a bt of a cross-roads in my poker "career". Do I look towards SNE, play a fuck-load of hands and probably make quite a lot of money, at the possible cost of development as a player. I feel like it will be restricting, tiring, annoying and I will hate poker by the end of the year.
Alternatively, I drop down to 16 tables, TABLE SELECT BETTER (my table selection has been virtually non-existent while 24 tabling and the results are telling), maybe move up stakes, possibly aim for the $6k milestone at 600k VPPs.... Watch videos, improve, analyse, probably play more lag, try out 6m, HU, PLO, badugi.......
I do have another plan though, I'm going to try 24 tabling with a stripped down HUD showing only vpip/pfr/attmp to steal and aggression factor. Old school! Hopefully getting rid of the 3bet stat will stop me spewing and the reduced clutter will allow me to concentrate on stack sizes, notes, history, table selecting and important stuff like that.... We'll see how that goes but this month has been fairly soul-crushing and I don't know if I'm ready to accept life as a 24 tabling 1ptBB robot just yet.
Also, I may well drop out of college at some point because it's shit. I guess it is linked in with the poker, I would just grind through college even if I did hate it if I didn't any other options. Poker provides me with a real alternative option, idk what is best for the long term though so for the moment at least I stay in college (it's a music college and it's not really possible to take a year out or anything as theoretically that would mean I am out of practice and it's a very performance based course.) Basically I haven't been getting on with my individual tutors and the lectures always were shit but are getting more so. I feel like I'd let a lot of people down if I quit, parents, teachers, friends and also myself. Bahhhh, who knows what I should do with my life?
this imo...Quote:

I think my play from the blinds may be ever so slightly flawed. hrrmmmmm. Serious work to be done.
dude, i read your "I hate pokers" post and broke it into two main questions.
1) SNE - yes or no?
ask yourself what you want from poker next year, only with the answer to that can you answer this question. My answer (entirely subjective, and based on my life, premises, ideas, etc):
I checked the stars site for the SNE rewards - I don't think it's worth it for you.
You suggest looking towards SNE and probably making quite a lot
of money - the alternative is not shooting for SNE and probably still making quite a lot of money - especially if you think you will be able to improve more rapidly without SNE pressure. You don't want to be restriced, tired, annoyed, soul crushed, or hating poker.
2) College vs poker?
this is even more personal.
If you weren't studying music with a performance component I'd figure take a year out, hell, it's the same as taking a year off to travel or whatever and you can always continue after. In your situation, it's different.... All I can come up with is a long list of questions - answering them may help you arrive at an answer. Let me know if you want such a list!
i gave some ideas to dwarfman before the banhammer hit, some may apply? http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...nk-t71569.html
and a third, not so main!, question - have you asked Warpe for his opinion? seriously, that man made an advice thread while ago - he seems wise...
man, i so nit - like 20-14-3 from the button recently.Quote:

Observation = we both suck from the big blind - that's the leak i'll be working on in December....
For now, I think you should study small blind play in particular, i noted this as a huge leak in my game and made some big adjustments after studying in October - particularly pre-flop in steal situations, limped pots, & postflop vs steals and in limped pots. Time for a "playing from the sb - thoughts?" post in the FR forum?
As context, this month I'm running -14ptBB/100 over nearly 7k hands played from the sb (that's $EV adjusted, in real $ terms I'm close to breakeven cos running good - but that's meaningless info). I initially thought this may have been because of some shorthanded play - but even filtering for hands with >7 players the rate is -3pt.
Great post thanks daven.
Poker - Sort out the blinds. I've done the EV calc and I'm only 2k below EV, so i still have some epic leaks there...I'm putting together a new basic strategy that will probably involve less calling and more 3betting. I'll do some work on seeing how to be unexploitable with my 3bets and cbets in 3bet pots (ie what ratio of nut hands : bluffs preflop, on the flop and then shove on turn is totally unexploitable.) It will involve c/fing some streets so I will need to work out a way to balance c/cing when nut hands preflop turn into bluffcatchers (or even when bluffs preflop turn into bluff catchers). A hell of a lot of work to be done there, and I think that's just one part of the problem.
Also, I will stop calling three-bets out of position unless I have a great reason. Less set-mining preflop oop when I'm not going to get paid enough, more c/ring a balanced range if I choose to call preflop (I will call more frequently preflop when I believe the player will fold a lot to a flop c/r ie. look at the player more when deciding to call preflop instead of "oh I have AQ against a LP raise my standard here is to call."
I'm losing nearly $1/hand from the small blind. Seeing as I play $1/$2, that's quite a serious leak lol.
College - The more I think about this the more I convince myself I should drop out. As far as long term future for life goes - I think I threw that away when I decided to do a music performance degree lol. I will piss everyone off though, as I said, particularly parents who I haven't really argued with properly for a very long time....
I guess what I'm thinking as well is that this is a 4 year course and I'm only 1/4 of the way through second year and this is how I feel. If I decide to stay at college I really need to commit to it if I'm to get through the whole 4 years, it's not as simple as just turning up when I need to which is all I'm doing at the moment. I don't really want to commit to it since I'm not enjoying it and I can't see any job at the end of college except teacher and a degree isn't necessary to teach percussion (although it'll look a lot better than one year then dropping out on the cv....)
I don't know if they would be the answers to your questions...? It'd be cool to chat next time you're on irc unless you've quit that forever :( Thanks for the dman link btw, I think it's a bit different because I know that I have the ability to be a pro seeing as I've basically been doing it for the past 6 months just with a bit of college work mixed in...
@shif - I don't really want to take 2 months off the grind! The thought is strangely horrifying lol. I know what you mean though, clearly I need to have a break and work some things out. A lot of maths and some 2nl donkage may well be in order! Regarding dtd, I have come to the conclusion that all tournaments are evil, so I think when we go next I'm just going to donk around at the cash tables instead :)
Badgers, enjoyed the thread - I read it 'cuz I saw a badgers1 at my 50nl table on FT, and wondered...but you're at nosebleed compared to me. Must be a badgers wannabe.
Saw the college note. I'm a professor, so I tend to vote for college. But taking some time off seems like a reasonable option in your case. The career options for fine arts profs are really tanking. My university, for example, is gutting the fine arts budget - and we're known as a liberal arts school. There are other things you can do with music. My sister was a piano performance/business major, got her MBA in France, and spent 10 years in arts marketing, working at the Oklahoma City Philaharmonic and the Kansas City Symphony as Marketing Director.
Good luck with the decision. Everyone has an opinion. As strongly as I feel about getting a college education, I can see you have thought about this a lot. There's lots of time in the future to go back, if you decide you want to. Make a +EV life decision and don't worry about what others think, imo.
Best wishes for poker, college and life.
Thanks for the advice Robb, I do have an account on FT under the name badgers_uk but I've never used it for anything other than play-money razz and railing donkaments! :D
I guess it's time for an update regarding college. I weighed up all the pros and cons and decided it was drop out and see where I got with the poker. However, a lot of people who I told my plans to advised me that it would be foolish to drop out without the option of returning to college, and I'm inclined to agree. What I didn't know before was that there is a way of taking time out in college, it's usually for someone who gets an amazing performance opportunity or something along those lines, not to play internet pokers lol. Anyway, basically having spoken to a few of the relevant people I found that I would have to lie to get this to happen. I'm not willing to do that because a) I would consider myself quite an honest person, and b) I am shit at lying lol.
So basically tl;dr I'm staying at college. Idk if it's right for me long term, but as a lot of people have said to me I used to enjoy playing percussion, this is what I've wanted to do since I was like 14 and it's just overall a great experience if I commit to it a bit more. What really swayed me was a friend who said everyone has a rough patch at college, but because I have such a good back up plan in poker I would always be inclined to drop out, whereas it's better to stick through it. Another thing is that I could just see myself getting bored and depressed playing poker especially if I was going for SNE.
ANYWAY, I'm feeling refreshed and like a huge weight has been taken off my shoulders since I decided this. I'm not going to set myself any monetary or hand goals anymore, I just play when I feel like it. This should mean my $/hr is way up anyway since if I only play when I'm in the right frame that should make a huge difference. My graph of November is in the graph thread, basically it's 100k+ hands of breakeven so I'm not that keen to repost it lol. December has been much better so far, although I'm still not running great :( I'm pretty pleased with the non-SD line, also my EV adjusted ptBB/100 is looking good :D. Winrate out of the blinds is also much improved. Long may it continue, and MERRY CHRISTMAS FTR :D
