BWE: Clearly high quality stuff but didn't find anything but been there done that gangster shit in the first five episodes. I way way rather play GTA than watch this.
GoT: So much embarassingly bad writing and unbelievable acting in the first episodes that I simply couldn't go on. I'm sure it got better but I just can't get myself to give it another chance. Again I'd rather spend my time playing Elder Scrolls.
The Newsroom: News anchor with a lisp? I couldn't get over it.

Homeland is one of the rare higher tier shows where the weakest link is its writing. The directing, editing, acting, just about everything else, is quite good, but the dialogue and plotting needs a pick-me-up. I'm usually the world's biggest sap for even the slightest romance, yet the Homeland one is the most dull thing I've ever seen
imma go out on a limb and say that this season's dexter was fantastic, as long as we treat it like comic book shit, namean?
Gonna watch the season finale tonight. It has good potential. Not coming back in here until I've watched it for fear if spoilers.

yes. it is one of those shows where you end up hating everyone by the end, and there is one specific twist in season ~4 or so that is really a weak choice, but it is worth watching. First couple seasons are def the best.Quote:

Yeah I think I said earlier that Homeland does everything else better than its writing. The writing isn't awful, but it is what they could improve the most on. I'm also not a fan of the acting the way everybody else loves it, but the acting is still quite good. For example, both TWD and SoA have had crying/screaming scenes with shitty acting, but Homeland actors are still able to pull off strong emotions. I guess what I don't like is a lot of the characterizations and The Bear's beard and demeanor makes him look like Perpetual Disapproving Uncle or something

Spoiler:yeah, some of the acting is bad, but I haven't seen anything atrocious so far. The writing that bothered me was the whole scene where the mom comes home early to tell the kids. Like, everything felt so forced, and for what? Why not just have her know the boy that is smoking weed with her daughter? Her discovering that her daughter, who seems to be thirteen at most, has a boyfriend and is smoking weed right after she finds out her decade long POW husband is alive... it was just too much, and then she just is like *smiles* "kids I have something to tell you!" WTF?
They make a few really "duh" mistakes. Like Brody's wife calling him Brody. No wife calls her husband by the same name she took on when she married him

I am getting more insight from these than I have from several five season marathons, discussions with friends, participating/lurking Wire threads, reading interviews, etc. This guy could clearly write a lengthy dissertation on the show.

His discription of Prop Joe was probably the most enlightening. I had never thought about Prop Joe at all other than being cool in every scene.
Bunk's was real solid as well. All of them were super solid.

I started watching House of Cards on netflix yesterday. I'm three episodes in and it's really good so far.
Kevin Spacey is awesome.

Girls irritates the hell out of me, and I figured out exactly why.
All the main characters make decisions based on ego and selfishness. They're thoughtless, irrational, and myopic. However, the side characters do not succumb to such frivolity and thoughtlessness; instead, they are constructed as foils with moral compasses who make decisions based on how they affect those they call friends.
The creators of the show have convinced themselves that they're the voice of this generation, but they're really just glorifying the lowest quality of the generation and rationalizing away the basic responsibilities of the people in it. For example, Jessa is a complete fucking idiot. Her character gives humanity a bad name yet the show thinks she's a free bird struggling in existentialism, yet the truth is that she's just an entitled brat who doesn't think before she acts.
I'm not even saying that the show is dumb, but that it is propping up the main characters' delusions and shitty decisions while neglecting the rationality and pragmatism of the side characters.
My gf watches that. Gives me time to read a book which is nice. Plus from the clips I've seen all they do is talk about sex, so her having sex on her mind can only be a good thing. I like this show.
Took a second shot at the wire last night. 3 episodes in. It's awesome. I don't know why I wasn't feeling it last time but I'm pretty excited to have 5 series of a great show ahead of me.
just dont give up on season 2 and you'll be fine. its standard to not like it as much on first watch, but trust me, its one of the best seasons.
I loved season 2.

watched latest episode of bones last night, so disappointed. nearly turned it off, and for an avid fan that's obv an awful sign. Acting was poor, music was cheesy, the whole storyline was trying to make a point about child soldiers having a rough time but in a very non-subtle American way. The coincidence which broke the case was crazy too. Just generally an awful episode. It was so much better a few seasons back and there was still promise with the new electronic genuis bad guy story line at the end of last season/beginning of this, but they've just about forgotten him completely
Season 2 of the wire was a bit dull. It was ok, but I never really cared about the sabutkas. I get the comparison of villains, the sabutkas doing the wrong thing for what they perceive as the right reasons, the decline of industry, the working man's lack of a voice without money and how they contrast different baddies and their willingness to fuck people over for personal gain. But I still didn't really care. Comparing say D or Wallace with frank sabutka, I cared about Wallace and D but didn't give a Shit about frank.
Was cool how we're seeing different stages of the same process and how different groups are involved and how say bubble getting 10 bucks to pay for a hit is supporting the gangs that are involved with human trafficing etc, but I found the whole thing unsatisfying in a way that season 1 wasn't.
Still looking forward to season 3 though. Is season 3 generally considered a good season? I'm too scared to Google it in case of spoilers.
Season 3, 4, and 5 are all awesome, where season 2 is widely considered the weakest. You're in for a good time.

Season 2 is tough to swallow because it changes so much from season 1. I think people dislike 5 for the same reason. 2 and 5 are probably my favorites, however. They're the ones that most capably hit the overarching philosophical theme of the entire series the best.
One of the strengths of the show is changing it up (notice how they foreshadowed that theme for the show by saying that phrase several times in season 1), but at first this strikes people as a weakness, myself included
