Betting the flop after hitting your set?

I won a nice pot here and was very pleased with my play in his hand. The reason for posting it is that I was first to bet on the flop after hitting my set and I would like to know what you think of this strategy in this hand? Would a check raise be better here?
Also feel free to comment on other things I could have done better in the given situation.

I'd have bet even more on the flop, with that many in someone must be on the draw(s), plus you figure someone has an A and will pay you off. Honestly I'm stunned the 66 didn't re raise.

No, he's saying bet the flop harder. The pot was ... what, $10.50? A $5 bet makes a +EV call for someone with 2 diamonds. Bet there should be around $7-8 to drive out flush draws (and as a side effect, it'll definitely run out any OESDs running around).

Good point, but with the Ace on the flop I was actually expecting a reraise after my quite early position half pot bet and I was hoping for an oportunity to reraise again/push to take a bigger pot. I wanted to signal some weakness or even that I was drawing myself to get that reraise. The flush draw is less likely with the A being one of the diamonds here I think, but of course still very possible. I was also surprised that the 666 didn't reraise which would be just what I was hoping for.

I'm still trying to judge that perfect balance point between keeping people p(l)aying and not getting outdrawn.

I'd have probably played it as you did but maybe as was suggested above a little more aggro on the flop due to the flush possibility.

If I hit a set on the flop I'm praying it's rainbow and no connectors! Don't want much really...

If either of those does appear I tend to bet big and try to take it down there - that may well be a result of playing at a level where people will call too much with too little right now though.

You want to raise bigger on the flop to push out a flush draw, also if you bet into the original raiser here there's a good chance he'll come over the top if he's paired the ace and you'll take his stack.

Your 1/2 sized pot bet would have been perfect if there was only two other callers and you were in early position. But with 5 callers and a 10 dollar pot you want to bet the pot. There are too many people out there that might have a flush draw. With that many people there is a good chance that one of them might call your pot-sized bet or raise. You want to take down the pot quickly in this situation or make people pay to draw.

Playing your sets fast disguises your hand and makes people pay more to draw against you. With straight/flush draws on the board or with multiple opponents I feel that in the long run you're better off forgetting about slow playing.

Absolutely! Bet the pot in that case. I recently played a similar hand at a live game, but the flush draw wasn't there. I had pocket 7's and limped in with no preflop raisers. It was a rainbow flop with including a 7 to make my set, and a Q for the highest single card.

Since there wasn't a flush or straight draw, I checked it. He bet about half the pot and I thought fer a bit then only called.

Turn card was another low card not appearing to be of any help, so I checked again, he made a decent size bet; I thought about it then called.

The river hit and again it was no apparent help... I checked & he bet, I put him all in & he immediately called.

Turns out he was holdin AQs for top pair with Ace kicker.

Two smooth calls and he calls the AI on the river? Silly. :o
