I was wondering how long it takes to complete a 500 person free-roll. I am interested in getting into one at midnight, and want to know how long I could be up if successful.
Thanks. Great site, I am soaking it up.

Depends on the site. Golden Palace would be under 2 hours due to how fast the blinds increase. Most others would be 3-4 hours on the safe side.
Last freeroll I was in was at Absolute. Start with 1500 in chips, blinds every 15 I believe (maybe 20) and took little over 4 hours to complete.
At Jet Set Poker, 400 people start with 1500 chips takes sometimes close to 4 hours.
Pokerstars, LIMIT HOLDEM, 6000 people freeroll......... 8 hours later, you hit your final table :P.
Believe me, i've done it

It greatly depends on the amount of people. I finished 37th out of 614 on Party once and took a little under 3 hours. I would imagine that the final 2-3 tables would take another hour or 2.
EDIT: also you will find with freerolls that in the first 20 minutes of the tournament dozens of people go out in one way or another. My theory is that people register way ahead of time and simply forget because it's not really money out of their pocket. So plan on your first table being very slow in the beginning.
I was playing a freeroll last night where the table of 9 commonly had 4-5 players in "Post and Fold" mode ... makes the games move fast, but you have to remember you're essentially playing a very shorthanded game.
Royal Vegas, 10,000 players. 4 - 6 hours and your there ;)
Well, I lasted for 2 hours and ended up 112 out of 357. It seemed like it was taking a long time, blinds only increased every 20 minutes. I had a small stack anyway. Went all in with pocket aces and lost. No complaints here! :)
Longest I was in was 4hrs 33min. Finished 11th.
The software can have a large effect on the time also. Was playin two at a time, one on Ultimate Bet and one on Absolute Poker. We'd play 2 to 4 hands on UB to one on Absolute mostly due to the speed of the software.
